Empowering Law Students To Overcome Extreme Public Speaking Anxiety: Why Just Be It Works And Just Do It Doesn't, Heidi K. Brown Jan 2015

Empowering Law Students To Overcome Extreme Public Speaking Anxiety: Why Just Be It Works And Just Do It Doesn't, Heidi K. Brown

Articles & Chapters

For law students experiencing extreme public speaking anxiety, which can manifest from variations of introversion, shyness, social anxiety, or social phobia, the Socratic method of intellectual discourse — either in the classroom or in the first-year oral argument experience — can trigger such a high level of apprehension that it may threaten even an otherwise strong student’s confidence in his or her future as an attorney. Extreme public speaking anxiety can pose a serious impediment to processing and comprehending legal concepts, and engaging with professors, classmates, and substantive material. Unless the anxious law student takes steps to address the roots …

A Big Deal: Examining Routine Activities Variables Related To Sexual Victimization On The College Campus, Mckenzie Ann Wood Jan 2015

A Big Deal: Examining Routine Activities Variables Related To Sexual Victimization On The College Campus, Mckenzie Ann Wood

Criminal Justice and Political Science

The sexual assault and sexual coercion of women on college campuses is a pervasive and ongoing problem. It is estimated that over 15% of women attending college experience some type of sexual assault or coercion each year (Fisher, Cullen, & Turner, 2000). While sexual victimization ranging from mild, verbal, sexual coercion, to rape has been studied, more recently a newer form of sexual victimization has been researched: Stalking. The current study uses results from 873 surveys at a Midwestern university to examine the prevalence of sexual victimization and stalking on a college campus. Cohen and Felson’s (1979) routine activities theory …

The information gleaned from such collecting trips (e.g. longitude/latitude coordinates, geography, elevation and other field observations) has provided valuable data to the scientific community. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been used to display, and analyze geographic data. The aim of the project is …

Addressing Off-Nominal Behaviors In Requirements For Embedded Systems, Daniel Aceituna Jan 2015

Addressing Off-Nominal Behaviors In Requirements For Embedded Systems, Daniel Aceituna

Computer Science

System requirements are typically specified on the assumption that the system's operating environment will behave in what is considered to be an expected and nominal manner. When gathering requirements, one concern is whether the requirements are too ambiguous to account for every possible, unintended, Off-Nominal Behavior (ONB) that the operating environment can create, which results in an undesired system state. In this dissertation, we present two automated approaches which can expose, within a set of embedded requirements, whether an ONB can result in an undesired system state. Both approaches employ a modeling technique developed as part of this dissertation called …

Harnessing User Generated Multimedia Content In The Creation Of Collaborative Classification Structures And Retrieval Learning Games, Otto Jerome Borchert Jan 2015

Harnessing User Generated Multimedia Content In The Creation Of Collaborative Classification Structures And Retrieval Learning Games, Otto Jerome Borchert

Computer Science

This paper describes a software tool to assist groups of people in the classification and identification of real world objects called the Classification, Identification, and Retrieval-based Collaborative Learning Environment (CIRCLE). A thorough literature review identified current pedagogical theories that were synthesized into a series of five tasks: gathering, elaboration, classification, identification, and reinforcement through game play. This approach is detailed as part of an included peer reviewed paper. Motivation is increased through the use of formative and summative gamification; getting points completing important portions of the tasks and playing retrieval learning based games, respectively, which is also included as a …

A Map Reduce Approach Of K-Means++ Algorithm With Initial Equidistant Centers, Krittika Bhattacharyya Jan 2015

A Map Reduce Approach Of K-Means++ Algorithm With Initial Equidistant Centers, Krittika Bhattacharyya

Computer Science

Data clustering has been received considerable attention in many applications, such as data mining, document retrieval, image segmentation and pattern classification. The enlarging volumes of information emerging by the progress of technology, makes clustering of very large scale of data a challenging task. In order to deal with the problem, many researchers try to design efficient parallel clustering algorithms. In this paper, we propose a parallel k-means++ clustering algorithm based on MapReduce, which is simple like traditional K-means, yet more powerful because the initial centroid selection process is not random. It follows a formula to plot initial centroids at equal …

Electricity Demand Prediction Using Artificial Neural Network Framework, Sowjanya Param

Computer Science

As the economy is growing, electricity usage has been growing and to meet the needs of energy market in providing the electricity without power outages, utility companies, distributors and investors need a powerful tool that can effectively predict electricity demand day ahead that can help them in making better decisions in inventory planning, power generation, and resource management. Historical data is a great source that can be used with artificial neural networks to predict electricity demand effectively with a decent error rate of 0.06.

Service Learning And Ethnocultural Empathy: Developing Cultural Empathy Through Experience, Amanda Jean Pieters Jan 2015

Service Learning And Ethnocultural Empathy: Developing Cultural Empathy Through Experience, Amanda Jean Pieters

Education

The purpose of the study was to explore the impact of experiential learning (through service learning) and ethnocultural empathy in undergraduate students. In other words, how does serving in the community impact how empathetic a person is toward others who are ethnically different than themselves? The researcher developed a 45 question electronic self-report survey utilizing The Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (SEE; Wang et al., 2003) to assess mean empathy scores of participants. Research questions addressed: 1) Empathy scores of students who volunteered 10 or more hours, 2) Empathy scores of students who volunteered and served adult populations, 3) Empathy scores …

The Nexus Between Local Needs And Aspirations Of Ugandans And Global Education Goals; A Case Study, Christine Margaret Okurut-Ibore

Education

The United Nations promotes access to basic education as an indelible right for all children, leading to the global push for Education for All (EFA) as a vehicle for realizing the global Millennium Development Goals. EFA has regulatory expectations for all participating countries to show programming and progress to achieve the targets by 2015. The Universal Primary Education (UPE) in Uganda, is aligned to these global targets to deliver access, equity, and relevant, quality education for poverty eradication, economic, and social development. However, the relationships among UPE, global goals, and the local needs are not well known. The central question …

While Animal Assisted Therapy is a more recent phenomena (Chandler, 2005, p. 5), AAT is quickly becoming an empirically supported treatment for a variety of mental health disorders (Perry, Rubinstein, & Austin, 2012). This study explored how client perceptions of their counselors change when a therapy canine is present in session. There is little research regarding client viewpoints on counselors who partner with therapy canines. Nine participants responded to a quantitative survey that was analyzed through non-parametric means. As was predicted, participants indicated more positive views of their counselors when a therapy canine was included in session. Findings suggest client …
