Colorblind Ideology Expressed Through Children’S Picture Books: A Social Justice Issue, Brooke Manross Guilfoyle Jan 2015

Colorblind Ideology Expressed Through Children’S Picture Books: A Social Justice Issue, Brooke Manross Guilfoyle

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This paper investigates the presence of people of color and white people as protagonists in a sample of recently published children’s picture books. The author proposes that the relative lack of books about people of color in the sample is reflective of colorblind ideology, denies children of color the opportunity to find themselves in books, and may support the development of racist attitudes in white children. The need for children of color and white children to be exposed to a variety of titles in which contemporary children of color are protagonists is presented as a social justice issue, related to …

The Catholic Church As A Cultivator Of Conscience: Toward Empowering Students To Be Agents Of The Maturation And Formation Of Their Consciences, Patrick O'Kernick Jan 2015

The Catholic Church As A Cultivator Of Conscience: Toward Empowering Students To Be Agents Of The Maturation And Formation Of Their Consciences, Patrick O'Kernick

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Many Catholic students at Jesuit institutions of higher education will face a crisis in which Catholic identity seems to stand in the way of personal moral growth. The superego-ish conscience of the young adult struggles to mature as she undergoes experiences of expanding social horizons, cognitive-emotive depth, and personal agency. As this maturation begins, Catholic identity often seems to be moral deadweight—to the young adult—as the church seems to be a hopelessly compromised institution pontificating all too often the wrong values without credible foundation. This experience finds support in a popular trope today—advanced in an organized way by groups like …

Promoting Transgender Understanding And Acceptance At A Jesuit University, Stefan Rowniak, Chenit Ong-Flaherty Jan 2015

Promoting Transgender Understanding And Acceptance At A Jesuit University, Stefan Rowniak, Chenit Ong-Flaherty

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Transgender individuals have faced and continue to face misunderstanding and severe discrimination in society and in accessing the provision of healthcare. Two nursing faculty at a Jesuit university addressed this issue in a Jesuit community dialogue supported by a Jesuit grant. This dialogue was framed within Jesuit teachings and was consistent with the value of social justice, something fundamental to both the profession of nursing and Jesuit teachings. Three transgender individuals and a Jesuit priest each spoke of their personal experience and then opened the dialogue up for questions. Faculty and students overwhelmingly found the dialogue to be helpful and …

Young People's Experiences Of Crime: An Investigation Into The Victimisation And Offending Of Inner-City Dublin Youth, Kalis Pope Jan 2015

Young People's Experiences Of Crime: An Investigation Into The Victimisation And Offending Of Inner-City Dublin Youth, Kalis Pope

Doctoral

This project is one of the first empirical investigations into youth victimisation and offending in Ireland and is one of three research projects that were established under the Youth Crime Research Project: Young People’s Experiences of Crime. Victim surveys are of particular interest to this study, as they help to illuminate the 'dark figure' of crime through ascertaining individual's experiences of victimisation, while simultaneously collecting pertinent information regarding their own level of criminality. A common failure among the majority of victim surveys, however, is that they do not investigate the experiences of young people. This project seeks to address this …

Visualising Migrant Voices: Co-Creative Documentary And The Politics Of Listening, Darcy Alexandra Jan 2015

Visualising Migrant Voices: Co-Creative Documentary And The Politics Of Listening, Darcy Alexandra

Doctoral

This ethnography of media production explores the challenges of literally and figuratively visualising voice. The labour of a shared production and the distribution of the audio-visual documentary essays unfolded within a field of diverse, and at times, conflicting interests. For this reason, judicious attention to what I name ‘encounters’ of ‘political listening’ (Bickford 1996; Dreher 2009) provides one framework for theorising the challenges of researching with marginalised subjects and stories, and the contradictions of developing shared practices within proprietary contexts. These encounters reveal moments of listening and being heard, struggles over ‘veracity’ and ‘evidence,’ and the power relations inherent in …

One Step Ahead: Investigating The Influence Of Prior Knowledge On The Perception Of Others’ Actions, Toby Nicholson Jan 2015

One Step Ahead: Investigating The Influence Of Prior Knowledge On The Perception Of Others’ Actions, Toby Nicholson

School of Psychology Theses

Historically, a dominant view has been that we understand others by directly matching their actions to our own motor system, emphasising the importance of bottom-up processes during social perception. However, more recent theories suggest that instead we actively anticipate others actions based upon intentions inferred outside of the motor system, from social cues such as language, eye gaze and object information. Across 13 experiments, the established representational momentum paradigm, as well as a cross-modal visuotactile paradigm were employed to test the hypothesis that people’s perceptual processes while observing the actions of others would be affected by such top-down cues about …

Using Sequential Mixed Methods In Enterprise Policy Evaluation. Special Mixed Methods Edition., Anthony Paul Buckley Jan 2015

Using Sequential Mixed Methods In Enterprise Policy Evaluation. Special Mixed Methods Edition., Anthony Paul Buckley

Articles

How might policy instruments contribute to indigenous firm growth and how can the effects of these instruments be evaluated at both firm and policy level? This paper illustrates how a mixed methods research design and data analysis strategy can pragmatically address the research questions outlined above. The advantages and challenges of employing quantitative research methods (what happened?) followed by confirmatory qualitative research methods (how and why did it happen?) in a multiphase sequential explanatory design is explored. The data analysis strategy is firstly to analyse the data generated from a ‘before and after’ quasi-experiment (with statistical controls), then data from …

Privacy Policy Inference Of User-Uploaded Images On Content Sharing Sites, Anna Cinzia Squicciarini, Dan Lin, Smitha Sundareswaran, Joshua Wede Jan 2015

Privacy Policy Inference Of User-Uploaded Images On Content Sharing Sites, Anna Cinzia Squicciarini, Dan Lin, Smitha Sundareswaran, Joshua Wede

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the increasing volume of images users share through social sites, maintaining privacy has become a major problem, as demonstrated by a recent wave of publicized incidents where users inadvertently shared personal information. In light of these incidents, the need of tools to help users control access to their shared content is apparent. Toward addressing this need, we propose an Adaptive Privacy Policy Prediction (A3P) system to help users compose privacy settings for their images. We examine the role of social context, image content, and metadata as possible indicators of users' privacy preferences. We propose a two-level framework which according …

Being Trans: An Interpretative Phenomenological Study Of Young Adults, Gemma Lee Taylor Jan 2015

Being Trans: An Interpretative Phenomenological Study Of Young Adults, Gemma Lee Taylor

Theses : Honours

Social structures assume a binary classification of gender whereby people are expected to accept the female or male gender expectations and gender roles commonly associated with their biological sex. However, gender identity and gender expression are personal experiences which do not necessarily align with the sex assigned to a person at birth. Young adults who identify as trans resist the predictable relationships and boundaries of sex and gender by embracing diverse gender identities and expressions. Research acknowledging more favourable life experiences of trans youth is limited, despite the importance of a sound knowledge base necessary to provide a positive and …

Eye Movement Patterns As An Indicator Of Task Automaticity, Olga Clarke Jan 2015

Eye Movement Patterns As An Indicator Of Task Automaticity, Olga Clarke

Theses : Honours

Automaticity is a vital aspect of daily living, as it allows for tasks to be completed quickly and with the fraction of the cognitive load required for tasks that cannot be completed automatically. Task automaticity is commonly measured with reaction time, which is considered to be an indirect measure of behaviour. As more direct measures are becoming available, there is an opportunity to assess task automaticity in greater detail. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether eye movements change as participants reach task automaticity. The study involved 16 participants who were asked to complete the dot counting …

The Missing Link: Filling The Gap And Achieving Success In Australian Contrabass Auditions, Giovanni Vinci Jan 2015

The Missing Link: Filling The Gap And Achieving Success In Australian Contrabass Auditions, Giovanni Vinci

Theses : Honours

In Australia, a contrabass player who wishes to win a full-time orchestral position must pass a formal audition. Australian contrabass auditions normally consist of both solo works and a set of orchestral excerpts. In order to be successful in the audition, the aspiring musician must meet the standard expected by the adjudicating panel of musicians. This dissertation explores the keys to success in such auditions, shining light upon why some musicians are successful and others not. A series of interviews have been conducted with string musicians around Australia to assist in discovering optimal strategies and approaches to achieving success. Practising …

Indirect Approaches: A Systematic Review Of Paediatric Dysphagia Interventions, Bianca Piano Jan 2015

Indirect Approaches: A Systematic Review Of Paediatric Dysphagia Interventions, Bianca Piano

Theses : Honours

Background and purpose: Dysphagia can be described as difficulty within the oral, pharyngeal and/or oesophageal phases of deglutition and occurs in approximately 80% of children with developmental disabilities, according to the American Speech and Hearing Association (2015). It occurs when there is impairment to the motor and/or sensory aspects of swallowing, due to a range of disorders affecting the voluntary and reflexive components of deglutition. The ability to swallow safely is essential in preventing medical complications, sustaining life and maintaining social participation. Paediatric interventions can be categorized into three broad approaches; direct, indirect and mixed. At present, two systematic reviews …

Thinking Differently About Reflective Practice In Australian Social Work Education: A Rhapsody, Lynelle Watts Jan 2015

Thinking Differently About Reflective Practice In Australian Social Work Education: A Rhapsody, Lynelle Watts

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There are many different ways of thinking about reflective practice in social work education in Australia. This research utilises a musical metaphor to illustrate this diversity. Written as a piece of music with album notes, the study utilises a reflexive methodology with a qualitative mixed method approach. Three studies were conducted to explore how reflective practice is understood in social work education and practice in Australia. The first study examined my own learning and teaching of reflective practice through an autoethnographic process. The findings indicated a range of models of reflective practice potentially available to the educator. Also explored in …

Young People's Views Regarding Participation In Mental Health And Wellbeing Research Through Social Media, Helen E. Monks, Patricia Cardoso, Alana Papageorgiou, Catherine Carolan, Leesa N. Costello, Laura Thomas

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Social media is a central component in the lives of many young people, and provides innovative potential to conduct research among this population. Ethical issues around online research have been subject to much debate, yet young people have seldom been consulted to provide a youth perspective and voice. Eight (8) focus groups involving 48 Grade 9 Western Australian secondary school students aged 13-14 years were held in 2012, to investigate how young people perceive the feasibility and acceptability of social media when used as a research tool to investigate various issues relevant to their mental health and wellbeing. Whilst young …

Defining Young In The Context Of Prostate Cancer, Suzanne Chambers, Anthony Lowe, Melissa Hyde, Leah Zajdlewicz, Robert F. Gardiner, David Sandoe, Jeff Dunn Jan 2015

Defining Young In The Context Of Prostate Cancer, Suzanne Chambers, Anthony Lowe, Melissa Hyde, Leah Zajdlewicz, Robert F. Gardiner, David Sandoe, Jeff Dunn

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The experience of prostate cancer is for most men a major life stress with the psychological burden of this disease falling more heavily on those who are younger. Despite this, being young as it applies to prostate cancer is not yet clearly defined with varied chronological approaches applied. However, men’s responses to health crises are closely bound to life course and masculinities from which social roles emerge. This paper applied qualitative methodology (structured focus groups and semistructured interviews with expert informants) using interpretative phenomenological analysis to define what it means to be young and have prostate cancer. Structured focus groups …

The Interdependence Of Long And Short-Term Components In Unmasked Repetition Priming: An Indication Of Shared Resources, Matt R. Merema, Craig P. Speelman Jan 2015

The Interdependence Of Long And Short-Term Components In Unmasked Repetition Priming: An Indication Of Shared Resources, Matt R. Merema, Craig P. Speelman

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

It has been suggested that unmasked repetition priming is composed of distinct long-and short-term priming components. The current study sought to clarify the relationship between these components by examining the relationship between them. A total of 60 people (45 females, 15 males) participated in a computer-based lexical decision task designed to measure levels of short-term priming across different levels of long-term priming. The results revealed an interdependent relationship between the two components, whereby an increase in long-term priming prompted a decrease in short-term priming. Both long-term and short-term priming were accurately captured by a single power function over seven minutes …

Berkshire Versus Kkr: Intermediary Influence And Competition, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2015

Berkshire Versus Kkr: Intermediary Influence And Competition, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Kathryn Judge of Columbia University documents how financial intermediaries persistently impose high fees compared to the value rendered, attributes this to political influence, and suggests countervailing policy strategies, including stoking competition and enhancing disclosure to reduce excessive transaction costs. In this solicited comment, I concur with Judge's findings and prescriptions by adding a paired example: that of Berkshire Hathaway versus Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. In the field of corporate acquisitions, these rivals are opposites, Berkshire shunning intermediaries and generating virtually no transaction costs while KKR feasts on multiple and lavish fees. The contrast reflects broader differences between Berkshire and private equity …

Johnson’S Differentiation Theory: Is It Really Empirically Supported?, Joan S. Meier Jan 2015

Johnson’S Differentiation Theory: Is It Really Empirically Supported?, Joan S. Meier

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Michael Johnson’s differentiation of ‘‘types’’ of domestic violence has had a significant impact on courts and providers, in part because of its claim to an empirical basis. Unfortunately, the label ‘‘situational couple violence’’ has already been used by judges and evaluators to minimize abuse claims in custody cases. Johnson’s repeated assertion that SCV is the most common form of domestic violence reinforces the marginalizing of domestic violence. But what do his data actually show? Here Professor Meier takes a close look at the research Johnson relies on and finds that it fails to prove his thesis. Rather, the data suggest …

The Law Of Intimate Work, Naomi Schoenbaum Jan 2015

The Law Of Intimate Work, Naomi Schoenbaum

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article introduces the concept of intimate work — intimate services provided by paid workers to a range of consumers — and seeks to unify its treatment in law. The concept explains multiple exceptions to work law that have previously been viewed as random and even contradictory. From the daycare worker to the divorce lawyer, the nurse to the hairstylist, intimate work introduces an intimate party — the consumer — into the arm’s-length employer-employee dyad on which work law is premised. This disruption leads to limited enforcement of non-compete agreements, the waiver or imposition of fiduciary duties, and exceptions to …

The Puzzle Of Alfarabi's Parallel Works, Miriam Galston Jan 2015

The Puzzle Of Alfarabi's Parallel Works, Miriam Galston

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Scholars disagree about the correct interpretation of Alfarabi’s Political Regime and Virtuous City, treatises that have striking similarities, yet notable differences. For some, the treatises encapsulate Alfarabi’s philosophy; for others, they express only politically salutary opinions. Both interpretations fail to explain why he wrote parallel works. If both reflect Alfarabi’s genuine philosophic doctrines, why did he compose separate but parallel treatises, both written when his philosophy was mature? Alternatively, if the treatises are political or rhetorical, why did Alfarabi compose two versions, and why did he choose these two accounts rather than others? To answer these questions, I discuss several …

Parsing The Visual Rhetoric Of Office Dress Codes: A Two-Step Process To Increase Inclusivity And Professionalism In Legal-Workplace Fashion, Karen Thornton Jan 2015

Parsing The Visual Rhetoric Of Office Dress Codes: A Two-Step Process To Increase Inclusivity And Professionalism In Legal-Workplace Fashion, Karen Thornton

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Legal employers expect attorneys in their offices to use the ethos of personal appearance to project an image of competence to clients. This expectation is largely unspoken, however, and polling and anecdotal evidence alike show that in today’s workplace, employers are frustrated with the level of professionalism demonstrated by new employees. The goal of this article is to encourage open conversations about workplace fashion as it relates to an attorney’s professional identity. It is in both the employer’s and employee’s interests to clarify employer expectations and empower new members of the legal profession to adopt a personal sense of style …

The Requirement To Be Fit And Proper: What Does It Mean To Australian Psychologists?, Francesca A. Bell Jan 2015

The Requirement To Be Fit And Proper: What Does It Mean To Australian Psychologists?, Francesca A. Bell

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The phrase fit and proper is used in the Health Practitioners Regulation National Law Act (Qld), 2009, which came into effect nationally in 2010 and governs psychologists. As with previous legislation that used the phrase, the legislator does not define fit and proper, leaving it up to each profession to determine its exact meaning and inform the courts accordingly. A review of the literature established that to date no Australian psychologist has attempted to define the construct. This means that Australian lawyers do not get any guidance from psychologists regarding how they should interpret the phrase fit and proper in …
