A Comparison Of Obesity Interventions Using Energy Balance Models, Marcella Torres Jan 2015

A Comparison Of Obesity Interventions Using Energy Balance Models, Marcella Torres

Theses and Dissertations

An energy balance model of human metabolism developed by Hall et al. is extended to compare body composition outcomes among standard and proposed obesity interventions. Standard interventions include a drastic diet or a drastic diet with endurance training. Outcomes for these interventions are typically poor in clinical studies. Proposed interventions include a gradual diet and the addition of resistance training to preserve lean mass and metabolic rate. We see that resistance training, regardless of dietary strategy, achieves these goals. Finally, we observe that the optimal obesity intervention for continued maintenance of a healthy body composition following a diet includes a …

Sports Investment, Beliefs About Food-Related Behaviors, And Engagement In Problematic Eating Behaviors During Adolescence, Kaitlyn A. Ferris Jan 2015

Sports Investment, Beliefs About Food-Related Behaviors, And Engagement In Problematic Eating Behaviors During Adolescence, Kaitlyn A. Ferris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Involvement in sport is the most widely reported organized activity among children and adolescents. To date, organized sports also represent the only organized activity examined in conjunction with youths' eating behaviors. Organized sports serve as contexts where messages about healthy eating and body image are communicated, and adolescents' beliefs about food and their bodies' degree of thinness and muscularity has the potential to be amplified in such settings as youth strive to perform at high levels during athletic competitions. However, inconsistency in the measurement of both organized sports participation and adolescents' engagement in problematic under- and over-eating behaviors has resulted …

Does Self Love Lead To Spying On Ex-Partners On Facebook? The Examination Of Ego Factors In Facebook Stalking, Brittany Furbee Jan 2015

Does Self Love Lead To Spying On Ex-Partners On Facebook? The Examination Of Ego Factors In Facebook Stalking, Brittany Furbee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study aims to identify predictable personality traits that can influence ones likelihood to stalk an ex-partner on Facebook. Particularly, the study focuses on the traits related with self-concept, given that motivations of using social network sites (SNS) are highly associated with self-concept. This includes self-esteem, two types of narcissism (grandiose and vulnerable narcissism), and self-efficacy. Furthermore, in order to better assess the predictability of these factors, this study considers other control variables while assessing predictability of personality traits, such as Facebook usage, length of the relationship, and time since the break- up, drawing from both social psychology and SNS …

Persuasion, Police, And Public Safety: Message Framing, Compliance, And Perceptions Of Law Enforcement, Alexander L. Lancaster Jan 2015

Persuasion, Police, And Public Safety: Message Framing, Compliance, And Perceptions Of Law Enforcement, Alexander L. Lancaster

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the everyday interactions between law enforcement and the citizens of their communities, officers attempt to gain compliance verbally, before resorting to physical force, if necessary. This dissertation examined the use of persuasive verbal messages by law enforcement officers when encountering citizens. These messages were created to represent a progression of asking, telling, and making, to gain compliance from an individual.;The officers in this study were university police officers, because university police departments are charged with providing a safe learning environment on campus. Due to the visible, community oriented policing in which university police departments tend to engage, it is …

Reciprocity With The Researcher: An Experimental Manipulation To Increase Help-Seeking In Adults 60 And Older, Elizabeth C. Price Jan 2015

Reciprocity With The Researcher: An Experimental Manipulation To Increase Help-Seeking In Adults 60 And Older, Elizabeth C. Price

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Seeking help is one way that individuals can maintain and achieve goals, but older adults may be reluctant to ask for help if they feel they cannot give anything in return. Men or individuals who endorse traditional beliefs about masculine behavior may be less likely than other individuals to ask for help. The first aim of the present study was to determine if a brief experimental manipulation based on the norm of reciprocity could increase help-seeking behavior and improve attitudes toward seeking help in older men and women. A second aim was to examine the relation between traditional beliefs about …

Promoting Parents' And Children's Well-Being Through Parent-Child Gratitude Interventions, Meagan A. Ramsey Jan 2015

Promoting Parents' And Children's Well-Being Through Parent-Child Gratitude Interventions, Meagan A. Ramsey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gratitude is a positive emotion that leads to enhanced relationship resources and emotional well-being for children and adults alike. Given the many benefits of gratitude, researchers have examined several types of gratitude interventions. However, it is unclear how the effectiveness of different gratitude interventions compare for youth or how these interventions operate in the family setting. Therefore, this study examined how parents could cultivate their children's (ages 8-13) gratitude and how two gratitude interventions---counting blessings and relational gratitude---enhanced parents' and children's daily gratitude, relationship satisfaction, and emotional well-being over the course of a week-long intervention and if effects were maintained …

The Use Of Concept Mappingpattern Matching To Conceptualize The Desired Domain Of Student Learning In The First Year Of College, Jacob B. Sanwidi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study conceptualized the desired domain of student learning in the first year of college as it pertains to a success program serving first-time, full-time undecided students at a land-grant and high research activity classified university. Trochim's Concept Mapping/Pattern Matching approach, an exploratory mixed methods research methodology, was used to collect and analyze data. The researcher sought the contribution of 23 participants including sixteen students, and seven faculty and staff members involved in the success program. As a group, participants generated 100 statements representing desired learning outcomes. They individually sorted the items into groups and rated them for relative importance …

African Asylum At A Crossroads: Activism, Expert Testimony, And Refugee Rights, Iris Berger, Tricia Redeker Hepner, Benjamin N. Lawrance, Joanna T. Tague, Meredith Terretta

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

African Asylum at a Crossroads: Activism, Expert Testimony, and Refugee Rights examines the emerging trend of requests for expert opinions in asylum hearings or refugee status determinations. This is the first book to explore the role of court-based expertise in relation to African asylum cases and the first to establish a rigorous analytical framework for interpreting the effects of this new reliance on expert testimony.

Over the past two decades, courts in Western countries and beyond have begun demanding expert reports tailored to the experience of the individual claimant. As courts increasingly draw upon such testimony in their deliberations, expertise …

Irrigation Experiments In The Lab: Trust, Environmental Variability, And Collective Action, Jacopo A. Baggio, Nathan D. Rollins, Irene Perez, Marco A. Janssen Jan 2015

Irrigation Experiments In The Lab: Trust, Environmental Variability, And Collective Action, Jacopo A. Baggio, Nathan D. Rollins, Irene Perez, Marco A. Janssen

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Research on collective action and common-pool resources is extensive. However, little work has concentrated on the effect of variability in resource availability and collective action, especially in the context of asymmetric access to resources. Earlier works have demonstrated that environmental variability often leads to a reduction of collective action in the governance of shared resources. Here we assess how environmental variability may impact collective action. We performed a behavioral experiment involving an irrigation dilemma. In this dilemma participants invested first into a public fund that generated water resources for the group, which were subsequently appropriated by one participant at a …

The Fourth Social Change Wave: Mastery Or Misery?, Raymond L. Forbes Jan 2015

The Fourth Social Change Wave: Mastery Or Misery?, Raymond L. Forbes

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

One of the great values of social science has been its ability to identify and interpret useful themes and patterns that have shaped historical human behavior. In particular, understanding broad patterns of strategic social and technological change offers the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the present and provide potentially practical guidance for the future. This paper advances the concept of social waves of change, originally presented by futurist Alvin Toffler, as a frame work to think about what is now and what might be coming. It also provides several visions for a changed world, explores what it all might …

Resilience Through Adversity And Aging: Historical Loss And Resilience In Adults From A Northern Plains Tribe, Desiree L. Fox Jan 2015

Resilience Through Adversity And Aging: Historical Loss And Resilience In Adults From A Northern Plains Tribe, Desiree L. Fox

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Historical loss is a primary contributor to the well-being of American Indian people and their communities. Research has shown that these losses have contributed to modern-day physical and mental health disparities. Research has also shown that adverse experiences, such as historical loss, are associated with the development of resilience. Additionally, increased age has been found to be related to increased levels of resilience. An informal survey of members of a Northern Plains tribal community identified grief as a major area of concern. The present study is a secondary analysis of data that was collected from two culturally-anchored grief retreats. Participants …

All That Is Solid Melts Into Air: The Subject-Matter Eligibility Inquiry In The Age Of Cloud Computing, Scott T. Luan Jan 2015

All That Is Solid Melts Into Air: The Subject-Matter Eligibility Inquiry In The Age Of Cloud Computing, Scott T. Luan

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

This article critiques and refines the subject-matter eligibility inquiry in patent law by examining the process of creativity in the context of software-implemented inventions. As a substantive critique of § 101 jurisprudence, this article, informed by copyright law, proposes a working hypothesis for a general structure of the subject-matter eligibility inquiry in which a critical determination is the appropriate level of abstraction for claim construction. As a discursive critique of the limits and limitations of judicial language, this article argues that courts have incorrectly presumed that contemporary legal thought is equipped, conceptually and linguistically, to understand the full significance of …

State Of Unions: Politics And Poetics Of Performance, Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D. Jan 2015

State Of Unions: Politics And Poetics Of Performance, Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

At the 2005 International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, the author delivered a poem and slide show, “The State of Unions: Activism (and In-Activism) in Decision 2004.” The performance processed the election in the context of her research community, a network of gay male friends—marginalized by sexual orientation but privileged by sex, gender expression, race, class, and education. Audience members offered mixed responses, some praising its provocative content, others criticizing the author’s position and tone, which some perceived as hostile, even as “gay bashing.”

When Private Property Rights Collide With Growth Management Legislation, Steve P. Calandrillo, Chryssa V. Deliganis, Andrea Woods

Articles

Over the past century, ever-expanding urban and suburban growth in the United States has offered a clear sign of America’s economic vitality, but it has not come without unique challenges of its own. Indeed, efforts to promulgate “smart growth” legislation as an antidote to suburban “sprawl” have proliferated in the past three decades, but it is time we ask ourselves whether their benefits outweigh their unintended consequences. States and local governments that once enthusiastically touted such legislation are beginning to confront unforeseen obstacles–and litigation–that raise the need for immediate reform.

This Article explores the impact of growth management acts on …

The Lost "Art" Of The Patent System, Sean M. O'Connor Jan 2015

The Lost "Art" Of The Patent System, Sean M. O'Connor

Articles

Patent systems emerged in the early modern period of the West to incentivize development and dissemination of skills-based artisanal innovations. This approach appears to have been adopted by the Framers in drafting the Intellectual Property Clause.

Only later, in the Industrial Revolution, did ‘‘science’’ and ‘‘technology’’ begin to displace ‘‘art’’ as the perceived object of the U.S. patent system. This was in large part because of the emergence of the concept of ‘‘technology’’ itself as science-based innovation in artisanal and mechanized production.

The loss of an ‘‘art’’-based concept of the patent system is arguably causing some of the confusion over …

Trait Hope As A Moderator Of The Effects Of Hassles And Uplifts On Depressive Symtpoms In College Students, Leslie C. Croot Jan 2015

Trait Hope As A Moderator Of The Effects Of Hassles And Uplifts On Depressive Symtpoms In College Students, Leslie C. Croot

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Major Depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States and has been studied for decades. Research suggests that daily hassles may increase the likelihood of depressive symptoms while daily uplifts may help protect against depressive symptoms (Mayberry & Graham, 2001). Snyder's hope theory (Snyder et al., 1991) provides an avenue for understanding how hope can protect against symptoms of depression. Hope, hassles, uplifts, and depressive symptoms were assessed at three time points with one-month intervals in a sample of 186 undergraduate students via self-report measures. Results, analyzed using a Generalized Estimating Equation, were threefold: there was (1) …

Metamorphosis And Persona In Ned Rorem's Poems Of Love And The Rain, Jacob Boca Jan 2015

Metamorphosis And Persona In Ned Rorem's Poems Of Love And The Rain, Jacob Boca

Senior Independent Study Theses

Ned Rorem’s 1963 song cycle for mezzo-soprano, Poems of Love and the Rain, presents settings of texts by eight American authors loosely centered on the subject of unrequited love. The cycle’s formal structure is particularly unique given that each text is set twice, with contrasting settings placed directly opposite each other along the cycle’s temporal plane. That is, the sequential ordering of texts, one to nine then back to one, yields an overarching pyramidal or mirror form. The following study examines text-music relationships, both at various moments within the cycle and between contrasting settings, with the ultimate goal of …

The Role Of Social Support In The Disclosure And Recovery Process Of Rape Victims, Jessica Nicole Mitchell Jan 2015

The Role Of Social Support In The Disclosure And Recovery Process Of Rape Victims, Jessica Nicole Mitchell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Women disproportionately account for a majority of all completed and attempted rape victimizations each year in the U.S. relative to men. Female college students, in particular, have been noted as a group with the highest risk for rape. Rape among women not only has a substantial public health impact, but has been linked to a number of individual mental health and substance use problems. Despite the fact that service utilization (formal help-seeking with a counselor, mental health professional, rape crisis center, and police reporting) has been shown to deter negative sequelae of rape, few victims of rape receive assistance from …

The Resurgence Of Forced Labor: How The Sixth Circuit's Decision In United States V. Toviave Endorses The Exploitation Of Children, Sophia K. Niazi

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

Comment arguing that the Sixth Circuit decision in United States v. Toviave was erroneous because the court failed to determine that the alleged forced labor was used as a means to control the children in the case. The comment looks at the reasoning in Toviave and explores the Sixth Circuit's reasoning in the case as well as the Federal Forced Labor Statute, the Federal Involuntary Servitude Statute and Michigan's current child abuse laws.
