The Elements Of A Perfected Song Cycle: A Lecture Recital On Schumann’S Frauenliebe Und Leben, Kristen M. Christopherson

Senior Honors Theses

A lecture recital is a quintessential representation of the music student’s knowledge and skill in a synthesis of performance and instruction. This thesis will encompass the extensive research and preparation necessary to perform a lecture recital about Robert Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben (A Woman’s Love and Life). This marvelous work is an excellent example of Schumann’s enhancement of the song cycle genre. A standard work in soprano repertoire, Frauenliebe und Leben provides the opportunity for extensive musicality through vocal coloring, legato lines, ornamented turns, various phrasal structures, and clear dramatic direction. In addition to its rich history and …

Cognitive Load Of Registered Nurses During Medication Administration, Sarah Faith Perron Nov 2015

Cognitive Load Of Registered Nurses During Medication Administration, Sarah Faith Perron

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over 4 million avoidable hospital admissions result from medication errors (IMS Insitute for Healthcare Informatics, 2013). Human error accounts for 80% of all medical errors (Palmieri, DeLucia, Peterson, Ott, & Green, 2008). Medication administration is a complex process. It is important to understand the cognitive load (CL) of Registered Nurses (RNs) working in an electronic health record environment to identify the risk factors of medication errors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the CL of RNs during medication administration who are working in an electronic health record environment. Simulated medication administration scenarios with varying …

An Empirical Comparison Of The Effect Of Missing Data On Type I Error And Statistical Power Of The Likelihood Ratio Test For Differential Item Functioning: An Item Response Theory Approach Using The Graded Response Model, Patricia Rodriguez De Gil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the context of educational research, missing data arise when examinees omit or do not reach an item, which generates an item nonresponse problem. Using a simulation approach, in addition to conducting complete data analyses, this study compared the performance of six methods for treating item nonresponse in the context of differential item functioning (DIF). The effect of missing data on the Type I error and statistical power of the Likelihood Ratio test for DIF detection in small scales was examined in the context of Item Response Theory (IRT-LR), using polytomous, Likert-type data and the graded response model. The effect …

Data Mining Nhanes: Utilizing A Genetic Algorithm To Detect Correlation Between Birth Sex Ratio And Epidemiological Factors, Christopher F. Fucile

Theses

In the past several decades there has been increasing research into factors that may affect the birth sex ratio of parents. These can range from nutrition to hormone levels to psychological factors. The National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) is a broadly encompassing governmental survey that captures some of these aspects making it a rich and easily exploitable data set for these purposes. In this study we utilize custom Perl scripts written to extract such information and attempt to find correlations using a genetic algorithm. Mothers are first identified through inferred relationships within the database. Variables are then analyzed …

Exploring Classroom Practices In Collectivist Cultures Through The Lens Of Hofstede’S Model, Amrita Kaur, Mohammad Noman

The Qualitative Report

This study explores beliefs and classroom practices of teachers from collectivist nations through the lens of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. In this grounded theory study, an in-depth investigation of the ways in which six teachers from five different collectivist countries described their beliefs and classroom practices was carried out. Through the constant comparative method, the two authors grouped the findings into categories of beliefs and practices which were then examined through the lens of the six dimensions of Hofstede’s model of cultural difference. Six categories of classroom practices, Pedagogy, Interaction, Student Role, Teacher Support, Differential Assessment, and Behavioral Management and three …

Ikamva Youth: Tutor Engagement Plan, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince

Miller Center Fellowship

IkamvaYouth empowers South African students from under-resourced and under-performing secondary schools to achieve academic results competitive with those of the best-funded schools in the country. The organisation is able to offer extensive tutoring services free of charge due to the hard work of its committed volunteer tutors. As more students, called “learners,” flock to join the programme and IkamvaYouth grows, it faces challenges in attracting and maintaining an optimal amount of volunteer tutors.

We conducted a quantitative online survey of tutors’ demographic information, backgrounds, and experiences with the organisation. Of IkamvaYouth’s approximately 300 tutors, 223 responded. We conducted tutor and …

Motivation Of Japanese Descending Diaspora Entrepreneurs, Aki Harima Nov 2015

Motivation Of Japanese Descending Diaspora Entrepreneurs, Aki Harima

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

This paper explores entrepreneurial motivation of Japanese diaspora entrepreneurs conducting their business in emerging countries. While diaspora entrepreneurs play an increasingly significant role in the modern transnationalizing economy (Newland & Tanaka, 2010), previous scholars have predominantly focused on those who originate from developing countries and migrate to more developed ones. There are, however, also entrepreneurs who originate from developed countries and establish their business in emerging countries. These people are almost invisible in the previous research even though their entrepreneurial activities are assumed to have positive impacts on the local economy. They transfer knowledge, resources and information from developed countries …

The Practices Of Micro-Innovation In Chinese Enterprises: Traits, Types And Affecting Factors, Qing Zhou, Wei Yang, Xiangyuan Ma, Gang Fang

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

Micro-innovation, a kind of innovative thinking and innovative manner, can be divided into continuous micro-innovation, imitating micro-innovation and independent micro-innovation based on the dimensions of innovativeness, market disruption and repetitiveness in the innovation domain. On the basis of theoretical and empirical research, this paper analyzes the impact of the main micro-innovation affecting factors on micro-innovation types. Affecting factors including productive resources, management resources and external restrictions have a more prominent impact on imitating micro-innovation, while having a lower correlation with independent micro-innovation and continuous micro-innovation. Enterprises should select an appropriate micro-innovation type or different type combinations according to the comprehensive …

Priority Criteria And Alternatives For University Business Incubators In The Entrepreneurial Process In Mexico, Lizbeth Martínez Ramírez, Jaime Muñoz

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

The Schumpeterian theory of economic development establishes the innovation process as a key factor for entrepreneurship. Nevertheless, not every entrepreneur exercises innovation and not every innovation leads to entrepreneurship. University Business Incubators (UBIs) have been considered as the main factor for entrepreneurial process in which if innovation takes place, the perspective of economic success becomes wide open. Currently, UBIs are typified and considered around the world as guides in the process of entrepreneurship; one of their objectives is the creation of startups that can eventually consolidate in the market. The aim of this work is to identify by means of …

Now, We Hear Through A Voice Darkly: New Media And Narratology In Cinematic Art, James Anthony Ricci Nov 2015

Now, We Hear Through A Voice Darkly: New Media And Narratology In Cinematic Art, James Anthony Ricci

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the intersection of new media and narrative, as it is presented through a cinematic aesthetic. The narrative language of film is analyzed through the theoretical framework of Bakhtin’s concepts of Heteroglossia, Chronotope, and Dialogism. Bakhtin’s ideas of classifying language act as strong tools for demonstrating how cinematic narrative can inform and alter the perception of its spectators. Lev Manovich’s principles of New Media, specifically Variability, Modularity, and Automation are also utilized to demonstrate how cinema is a constantly evolving paradigm.

Chapter one focuses on the theoretical terminology, outlining the conceptual definitions and illustrating their relevance in precise …

Personal Jurisdiction Based On The Local Effects Of Intentional Misconduct, Allan Erbsen Nov 2015

Personal Jurisdiction Based On The Local Effects Of Intentional Misconduct, Allan Erbsen

William & Mary Law Review

Intentional misconduct frequently has extraterritorial consequences. Terrorist attacks, toxic pollution, civil rights violations, and other intentional torts can cause harm within a state despite originating outside the state. Those harms raise a vexing constitutional question: when do the local effects of intentional wrongdoing authorize personal jurisdiction over a defendant whose conduct occurred outside the forum? The answer has several significant implications. Granting or denying jurisdiction can support or undermine regulatory interests by allocating power between states, imposes burdens on the parties that can impede access to justice, and alters risk assessments that shape both socially desirable and socially destructive behavior.

The Costs Of Easy Victory, Michael E. Waterstone Nov 2015

The Costs Of Easy Victory, Michael E. Waterstone

William & Mary Law Review

Studies of law and social change often focus on areas of intense conflict, including abortion, gun rights, and various issues around race, gender, and sexual orientation. Each of these has entered the culture wars, inspiring fierce resistance and organized countermovements. A reasonable assumption might be that social change in less controversial areas might be easier. In this Article, I suggest that it is not that simple. Using the disability rights movement, I demonstrate how flying under the radar leads to unappreciated obstacles. The disability rights movement had a relatively easy path to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act …

Strategies And Resources To Enhance Test Evaluation And Selection, Janet F. Carlson, Nancy Anderson

Buros Center: Professional Staff Publications

Testing serves an important function for SLPs in offering an evidence base that is useful in screening, diagnosing, monitoring progress, and documenting outcomes. Tests are used to measure diverse constructs such as communication, literacy, oral and written language, receptive and expressive vocabulary, articulation, phonological awareness and processing, and auditory perception and processing. In addition, specific impairments may require specialized measures to evaluate conditions such as stuttering and orthographic competence.

When using tests to diagnose language impairments, Betz, Eickhoff, and Sullivan (2013) suggest that SLPs consider carefully a test’s psychometric properties, particularly because of the “increasing emphasis on evidence-based practice, specifically, …
