Health Impact Assessment Of Proposed Rental Housing Policy Within Clark County, Nevada, Usa, Erika Raquel Marquez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Homes serve as a central function of our everyday lives, they are where most Americans spend a significant amount of time and money. The quality of our homes can impact our health. Poor housing can cause and contribute to preventable diseases and injuries, such as the development or exacerbation of asthma, neurological deficits, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. According to the American Housing Survey (2013) approximately 5.8 million homes, of 132 million homes in the United States, are in moderate to severe physical disrepair, with rental housing being at a disproportionate burden. According to 2013 U.S. Census, Clark County, Nevada has …

Forecasting The School-To-Prison Pipeline: A Generative Case Study Of Early Literacy Experiences Of Black Male Youth, Tarryn E. Mcghie
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study examined the early literacy experiences of Black male youth who have dropped out of school and become court involved. Specifically, it examined how these youth’s home, family and school literacy-related experiences have led them into what is known as the School-to-Prison Pipeline (STPP). These experiences included their ability to glean meaning and understand literacy processes, particularly in reading and through oral language, more specifically in their interactions with school faculty and staff.
This study employed a four-pronged conceptual framework, built at the intersection of Critical Race Theory, Adolescent Development, Critical Literacy, and the STPP, in considering the existing …

Effects Of Picture Activity Schedules On Tasks Completed, Michael Eric Morrisett
Effects Of Picture Activity Schedules On Tasks Completed, Michael Eric Morrisett
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Self-determination is the freedom to make choices that impact an individual’s life. Many people would agree that self-determination leads to an enhanced quality of life, and choice making is considered a central element in self-determination. Most learn choice making through a gradual release of responsibility by caregivers throughout their childhood and adolescence. Many times, this is not the case for students with autism. Completed research examining choice making and people with autism has shown promising results; however, one of the primary traits of autism, the need for structured routines, often does not lend itself to evaluating choice making. Activity schedules …

The Lived Experience Of Nurses Working In A Modified Therapeutic Community, Victoria Lynn Plagenz
The Lived Experience Of Nurses Working In A Modified Therapeutic Community, Victoria Lynn Plagenz
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Today over one million U. S. prisoners are being held in federal and state systems for substance use-related crimes. The financial, social, and emotional costs have turned policymakers’ attention to rehabilitation rather than incarceration. In an attempt to meet the challenge of recovery from addiction, prison systems around the nation have explored various options, including residential treatment programs. One such form of residential treatment is the modified therapeutic community (MTC) where inmates participate in a nine-month, cognitive-based treatment program. This model focuses on incarcerated individuals, addicted to substances, to assist them in developing behaviors to reduce antisocial peer associations and …

Multicultural Education In Action: A Multiple Case Study Of Black Elementary Aged Children's Identity Development And Engagement With Civil Rights Literature, Rebekah E. Piper
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the United States education system a large achievement gap between African American and Latino students compared to White American students exists. Various studies have documented the gap, but there has not been much success in closing it. Recognizing that the educational system is growing more, not less, diverse, including due to the rise in enrollments of students of color and the decrease of the same by white students based on birthrates and immigration trends, the success of this increasingly diverse student population is even more important to the success of the nation. Preparing teachers to integrate multicultural content and …

There were two main conditions of the experiment; in one condition the number to estimate and the number line were presented simultaneously, and in the other condition, the number line presentation was delayed. In each of the two conditions of the experiment, eye fixations and area of interest analysis were …
Perceptions Of Mattering In The Doctoral Student And Advisor Relationship, Holly Anne Schneider
Perceptions Of Mattering In The Doctoral Student And Advisor Relationship, Holly Anne Schneider
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The advising relationship has been acknowledged as one of the most important factors in doctoral student persistence and attrition. Less researched are psychosocial factors that contribute to doctoral student persistence and completion. Preliminary research including measures of psychosocial factors on doctoral student success found faculty-student relationships and collegial support contributed significantly to doctoral completion more so than individual factors including motivation, career goals, procrastination, financial security, and external demands such as family.
The current study draws on the psychosocial construct of mattering (Rosenberg &
McCullough, 1981) to examine doctoral students’ perceptions of mattering to their advisors and the influence on …

The Experience Of Participating In Des, Dio Turner Ii
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Descriptive Experience Sampling method (DES, Hurlburt, 1990, 1993) is designed to help researchers collect and describe participants’ inner experience in a way that minimizes the impact of the participant’s presuppositions and the researcher’s worldview on the description of participants’ inner experience. This study was an exploratory examination of the potential therapeutic effects of DES. It used three sources of data: pre and post-DES SCL-90-R questionnaires, observation of the process that unfolded during DES interviews, and a post-DES exit interview. Participants (n = 14) were drawn from the Psychology 101 Subject Pool. After five days of DES, there was a …

This research went through over 40 articles about Chinese hotel industry and Chinese culture and found out that servant leadership style should be the best approach to engage the employees.
Spectrums, Subgroups And School-Lunch: The Linguistic Capital Of Students With Autism, Scott Belden
Spectrums, Subgroups And School-Lunch: The Linguistic Capital Of Students With Autism, Scott Belden
Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are known to have difficulties with pragmatic language. There is, however, a subpopulation of those with ASD that exhibits a high competency with pragmatic language. It can be difficult for researchers to find natural contexts to record these high-functioning individuals and examine their spontaneous use of pragmatic language. Additionally, there is a need to move beyond analyzing the cognitive abilities of these individuals to a sociolinguistic exploration of how they use pragmatic abilities to form and navigate social groups.
The research involved in this thesis included audio-visual recordings of 14 high school students with …

As an automated device replacing paper in the cockpit, there are many human factor issues that relate to operation of the EFB. EFBs have been cited in accidents and incidents worldwide in large, transport category aircraft. While the EFB was not cited as the main cause of the accident/incident, it has been listed as a contributing factor. This study looks at pilot perception related to the safety aspect of the EFB in flight operations …
General Aviation Maintenance Technician Fatigue And Work/Rest Periods, Blaise Eisenbeil
General Aviation Maintenance Technician Fatigue And Work/Rest Periods, Blaise Eisenbeil
Theses and Dissertations
Fatigue has been studied extensively within the ranks of commercial airline pilots, and for them, regulations have been modified several times to include various rest and work periods. These regulations are often supplemented by union provisions found in contracts with airlines. Conversely, Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) have been largely overlooked, especially in the general aviation industry. The goals of this research project are to determine (a) if any rest/work rules are in place for 14 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 145 AMTs, and (b) the body of literature on fatigue in relation to operational errors by AMTs. Note: Any …

Television Consumption And Child Obesity: Linking Children's Contemporary Television Use, Physical Activity, And Advertising To Putnam's Displacement Hypothesis, Brittany L. Altamirano
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study observed the relationship between television consumption and child obesity through the theoretical construct of Putnam’s displacement hypothesis. It did so by updating the previous research through the investigation of the displacement of both physical activity and advertisements on contemporary television platforms. The inclusion of Putnam’s displacement hypothesis was to provide a foundational framework, not found in previous literature, to study two important paradigms that were represented in previous research: 1) the displacement of physical activity; and 2) the displacement of traditional advertisement exposure.
Several trends became apparent within previous literature. Previous literature did not include an explicitly stated …
Nevada Legal Services: The Legal Services Corporation Restrictions And The Diminishing Capacity Of Access To Justice For The Poor, William Todd Ashmore
Nevada Legal Services: The Legal Services Corporation Restrictions And The Diminishing Capacity Of Access To Justice For The Poor, William Todd Ashmore
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The lofty idea of equal justice for all is not the reason legal aid began in the United States. Legal aid was born from the indignation over injustices committed against the poor. Unable to afford an attorney, the poor could not effectively assert their rights within the criminal and civil justice system. Without access to justice through the courts, the extralegal activities required to defend oneself and exact justice such as personally forcing an employer to pay rightful wages, are deemed criminal in most cases. By providing legal resources to the poor, legal aid not only brought order to society …
Inner Experience While Reading Fiction: A Descriptive Experience Sampling Exploration, Vincent Peter Brouwers
Inner Experience While Reading Fiction: A Descriptive Experience Sampling Exploration, Vincent Peter Brouwers
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Reading is ubiquitous. In Western culture, childhood education places a strong emphasis on acquiring the ability to read. Whereas many studies have examined the cognitive processes underlying reading ability, no previous studies have used a high-fidelity method of sampling inner experience to examine the direct, momentary inner experience while reading. The current study used the Descriptive Experience Sampling Method (DES) to explore the inner experience of 17 undergraduates, who had been trained in DES, while reading classical short stories. We found that participants while reading often innerly saw a visual depiction of the story, though the congruency of these depictions …

In addition, psychological contract fulfillment and perceived organizational support together explained employee affect at work as well as other work attitudes. Affect at …
Email And Enron: Using Cmm To Make Better Social Worlds In Organizations, Nicholas Noblet
Email And Enron: Using Cmm To Make Better Social Worlds In Organizations, Nicholas Noblet
Communication ETDs
Email as a communication phenomenon has been in existence since the 1970s, and yet researchers are still discovering new information regarding the usage and implications of usage for this medium (Atherton, Sawmynaden, Sheikh, Majeed, & Car, 2012; Zhu and White, 2009). This dissertation seeks to better understand organizational communication through the examination of email. Enron, a very large organization that peaked in the 1990s, utilized email for a variety of different purposes. Enron's email was placed online by the federal government, and includes communication from top executives. These messages represent the largest publicly accessible database of corporate email, and will …
Generalisation, Decision Making, And Embodiment Effects In Mental Rotation: A Neurorobotic Architecture Tested With A Humanoid Robot, K Seepanomwan, D Caligiore, A Cangelosi, G Baldassarre
Generalisation, Decision Making, And Embodiment Effects In Mental Rotation: A Neurorobotic Architecture Tested With A Humanoid Robot, K Seepanomwan, D Caligiore, A Cangelosi, G Baldassarre
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Mental rotation, a classic experimental paradigm of cognitive psychology, tests the capacity of humans to mentally rotate a seen object to decide if it matches a target object. In recent years, mental rotation has been investigated with brain imaging techniques to identify the brain areas involved. Mental rotation has also been investigated through the development of neural-network models, used to identify the specific mechanisms that underlie its process, and with neurorobotics models to investigate its embodied nature. Current models, however, have limited capacities to relate to neuro-scientific evidence, to generalise mental rotation to new objects, to suitably represent decision making …

Distributed And Adaptive Shared Control Systems: Methodology For The Replication Of Experiments, Mf Stoelen, Vf De Tejada, Aj Huete, C Balaguer, Fp Bonsignorio
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Much work in robotics aimed at real-world applications falls in the large segment between teleoperated and fully autonomous systems. Such systems are characterized by the close coupling between the human operator and the robot, in principle, allowing the agents to share their particular sensing, adaptation, and decision-making capabilities. Replicable experiments can advance the state of the art of such systems but pose practical and epistemological challenges. For example, the trajectory of the system is governed by the adaptation both in the human and the robot agent. What do we need besides (or instead of) data sets for such a system? …
The Transformative Experiences Of Female Educators As A Catalyst For Social Change In The World, April D. Jordan
The Transformative Experiences Of Female Educators As A Catalyst For Social Change In The World, April D. Jordan
Dissertations
As social justice issues become known, one may be moved to act in the hopes of alleviating the conditions that burden marginalized and oppressed people. What is sometimes missing from the discourse when discussing oppressive issues is the role women play in counteracting such subjugation. Also essential, yet missing from the research, are studies that underscore the importance of educators fostering social action change outside of and apart from institutions of learning and curriculum planning. This qualitative study examined the lives of six, nontraditional, female educator intellectuals whose perceptions of self (identity) and the world were transformed by engaging in …

High-Speed Rail And Equine Issues, Peter J. Haas, Allie Scrivener
High-Speed Rail And Equine Issues, Peter J. Haas, Allie Scrivener
Mineta Transportation Institute
Community concerns have been raised about the possible negative impacts of high-speed rail (HSR) service on equestrian areas. Although much is known about the impact of aircraft noise on wild and domestic animals, relatively little information is available on the potential impact of HSR service on equine populations. This study will explore possible conflicts between HSR construction and operations in areas used for equestrian ranching, recreation, and related activities, and identify geographic areas where such conflicts could occur.
A Study Of Compassion And Job Satisfaction Among Erie County's Child Protective Services Caseworkers: Vicarious Trauma, Coping, Supervisory Style, Bureaucratic Structure, And Safety, Sharon L. Rochelle
Public Administration Master’s Projects
Abstract
When high profile child fatalities with previous Erie County Child Protection Services (CPS) involvement generated considerable negative media commentary questioning the competency of CPS, there was concern over the mental well-being of CPS caseworkers. Furthermore, a key problem to be resolved was the high turnover of CPS caseworkers, which is both a budgetary drain on the County due to the training costs involved with new caseworkers, but also deprives the Department of Social Services of experienced family and child welfare personnel. This study seeks to understand factors negatively affecting the CPS caseworkers. Previous research indicate that human service workers …
