Healing-On-Demand Polymer Composites Based On Shape Memory Polyurethane Fibers And Polymeric Artificial Muscles, Pengfei Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, the healing-on-demand polymer composites based on shape memory polyurethane fibers and artificial muscles are investigated, for understanding and developing a novel healing-on-demand composite so that it would be used for industrial applications that could heal structural-length scale damage and leaking autonomously, repeatedly, efficiently, timely, and molecularly. Firstly, the structural relaxation behavior of shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) fiber was studied by theoretical analysis and experimental test. Then, a self-healing composite based on cold-drawn short SMPU fiber was prepared and tested for evaluating its crack-healing performance. After that, polymer artificial muscle based healing-on-demand composite was developed and characterized. Based …

Biostabilization Of Lipid Bilayers: Dealing With Water Stress In Embryos Of Artemia Franciscana, Daniel Steven Moore Jan 2015

Biostabilization Of Lipid Bilayers: Dealing With Water Stress In Embryos Of Artemia Franciscana, Daniel Steven Moore

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate stabilization of lipid bilayers during water stress by protectants found in embryos of Artemia franciscana. Two LEA proteins were used: AfrLEA2 and AfrLEA3m. AfrLEA3m was experimentally demonstrated to reside in the matrix. Two detergents were used to differentially solubilize the outer and inner membranes of mitochondria isolated from A. franciscana. Release of AfrLEA3m occurred simultaneously with the release of fumarase, a matrix-resident marker. As a second independent method to corroborate the above findings, I demonstrated that recombinant AfrLEA3m can be imported into mitochondria isolated from rat liver. Molecular modeling of AfrLEA2 and …

Fish Assemblage Structure, Distribution, And Trophic Ecology At Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico Banks, Todd Langland Jan 2015

Fish Assemblage Structure, Distribution, And Trophic Ecology At Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico Banks, Todd Langland

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The northwest Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) shelf-edge banks both provide unique hard bottom habitat and support the northernmost coral reefs on the North American continental shelf in a region that is generally characterized by low relief, soft sediments. The habitat value of many of these banks has led to their designation as Habitat Areas of Particular Concern (HAPC) and the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). However, little is known about the fisheries resources and dynamics of the banks outside the FGBNMS. This study had three main objectives: 1) define reef fish assemblages at northwestern Gulf shelf-edge banks and …

Engagement Levels During Implementation Of Co-Teaching Models, Cathy Lee Eschete Jan 2015

Engagement Levels During Implementation Of Co-Teaching Models, Cathy Lee Eschete

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Student engagement in the classroom is a priority for educators and policy makers because disengaged students are more likely to perform poorly in school. Students with disabilities, particularly those with high-incidence disabilities, are a subset of that population of potentially disengaged and definitely poor-performing students. When attending school, they are served increasingly in inclusive, co-taught settings, allowing for inquiry into engagement practices in these instructional arrangements. One purpose of this study was document levels of student engagement for six commonly described co-teaching models implemented in a teacher education course for both special education and general education preservice teacher candidates and …

Biogenesis And Redox Transition Of Iron-Sulfur Clusters In Proteins, Aaron Paul Landry Jan 2015

Biogenesis And Redox Transition Of Iron-Sulfur Clusters In Proteins, Aaron Paul Landry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Iron-sulfur proteins comprise one of the most ubiquitous and conserved classes of proteins in biology. The diverse functions of iron-sulfur clusters in proteins range from electron transfer to redox signaling. The assembly of iron-sulfur clusters in cells requires a complex protein system and acquisition of sulfur and iron. While the sulfur source for iron-sulfur cluster assembly is well-established, the iron source remains elusive. The first part of this work provides new evidence for the hypothesis that the conserved iron-sulfur cluster assembly protein IscA may act as the iron donor for iron-sulfur cluster assembly. Iron-sulfur clusters in proteins are also vulnerable …

Wavelets, Coorbit Theory, And Projective Representations, Amer Hasan Darweesh Jan 2015

Wavelets, Coorbit Theory, And Projective Representations, Amer Hasan Darweesh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Banach spaces of functions, or more generally, of distributions are one of the main topics in analysis. In this thesis, we present an abstract framework for construction of invariant Banach function spaces from projective group representations. Coorbit theory gives a unified method to construct invariant Banach function spaces via representations of Lie groups. This theory was introduced by \Fch\, and \Gro\, in \cite{FG,FG1, FG2,FG3} and then extended in \cite{CO2}. We generalize this concept by constructing coorbit spaces using projective representation which is first studied by O. Christensen in \cite{O1}. This allows us to describe wider classes of function spaces as …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Major challenges still exist in the cost-competitive production of cellulosic ethanol. Lignocellulose deconstruction using physiochemical pretreatments continues to be the most efficient way to remove lignin and expose cellulose for enzyme-mediated sugar reduction. Recent interest in the development of “value-added” lignin co-products and the desire to reduce the use of hazardous materials has prompted a resurgence of interest in alternative lignocellulosic feedstock and research into environment-friendly biological pretreatments. This article provides an overview of bioethanol processes and economics, standard and alternative feedstocks, physiochemical and biological pretreatments, and lignin chemistry. The chemistry and mode of action of ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzymes …

Contents: The Holy Dialectic; Poetry After Auschwitz; The Parable of the Four Prayers; An Agonistic Encounter with a Featherless Bird That Had Broad Flat Nails.

No Evidence That Elevated Co2 Gives Tropical Lianas An Advantage Over Tropical Trees, David C. Marvin, Klaus Winter, Robyn J. Burnham, Stefan A. Schnitzer Jan 2015

No Evidence That Elevated Co2 Gives Tropical Lianas An Advantage Over Tropical Trees, David C. Marvin, Klaus Winter, Robyn J. Burnham, Stefan A. Schnitzer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Recent studies indicate that lianas are increasing in size and abundance relative to trees in neotropical forests. As a result, forest dynamics and carbon balance may be altered through liana‐induced suppression of tree growth and increases in tree mortality. Increasing atmospheric CO2 is hypothesized to be responsible for the increase in neotropical lianas, yet no study has directly compared the relative response of tropical lianas and trees to elevated CO2. We explicitly tested whether tropical lianas had a larger response to elevated CO2 than co‐occurring tropical trees and whether seasonal drought alters the response of either …

Curbing Corruption, Financial Development And Income Inequality, Sourav Batabyal, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

In recent years, many of the Commonwealth countries have experienced a reduction in income inequalities due to the development of financial markets and intermediaries. At the same time, widespread corruption among public officials, civil servants, or politicians from these countries have been well documented. A key public policy question is whether the return to financial sector development at the level of massive corruption, exacerbate income inequality, offsetting the benefits of financial development. Using a panel data of 30 Commonwealth countries over the period of 1995–2008, it is found that the high rates of corruption in the Commonwealth countries are crowding …

Judging Statutes, Peter L. Strauss Jan 2015

Judging Statutes, Peter L. Strauss

Faculty Scholarship

Chief Judge Robert Katzmann has written a compelling short book about statutory interpretation. It could set the framework for a two- or three-hour legislation class, supplemented by cases and other readings of the instructor's choosing. Or it might more simply be used as an independent reading assignment as law school begins, to apprise 21st-century law students just how important the interpretation of statutes will prove to be in the profession they are entering, and how unsettled are the judiciary's means of dealing with them. It should be required reading for all who teach in the field.

Following The Script: Narratives Of Suspicion In Terry Stops In Street Policing, Jeffery Fagan, Amanda Geller Jan 2015

Following The Script: Narratives Of Suspicion In Terry Stops In Street Policing, Jeffery Fagan, Amanda Geller

Faculty Scholarship

Regulation of Terry stops of pedestrians by police requires articulation of the reasonable and individualized bases of suspicion that motivate their actions. Nearly five decades after Terry, courts have found it difficult to articulate the boundaries or parameters of reasonable suspicion. The behavior and appearances of individuals combine with the social and spatial contexts in which police observe them to create an algebra of suspicion. Police can proceed to approach and temporarily detain a person at a threshold of suspicion that courts have been unable and perhaps unwilling to articulate. The result has been sharp tensions within Fourth Amendment …

Correlation Of Csk2sb Photocathode Lifetime With Antimony Thickness, M. A. Mamun, C. Hernandez-Garcia, M. Poelker, A. A. Elmustafa

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

CsK2Sb photocathodes with quantum efficiency on the order of 10% at 532 nm, and lifetime greater than 90 days at low voltage, were successfully manufactured via co-deposition of alkali species emanating from an effusion source. Photocathodes were characterized as a function of antimony layer thickness and alkali consumption, inside a vacuum chamber that was initially baked, but frequently vented without re-baking. Photocathode lifetime measured at low voltage is correlated with the antimony layer thickness. Photocathodes manufactured with comparatively thick antimony layers exhibited the best lifetime. We speculate that the antimony layer serves as a reservoir, or sponge, for …

The Future Of Carbon-Based Scaffolds In Foot And Ankle Surgery, Jarema S. Czarnecki, Khalid Lafdi, Panagiotis A. Tsonis Jan 2015

The Future Of Carbon-Based Scaffolds In Foot And Ankle Surgery, Jarema S. Czarnecki, Khalid Lafdi, Panagiotis A. Tsonis

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Autologous grafts have been the gold standard in tissue replacement and the most accurate means of recapitulating both the biological and mechanical properties of tissue. However, autologous grafts have had complications and drawbacks. Skin grafting, a prime example of an autologous tissue graft, has been limited by the size of graft, availability, and secondary donor site morbidity. Use of cadaveric tissues circumvents several limitations of autologous grafts; however, sterilization processes used to reduce the risk of disease transmission potentially weaken tissues and eliminate living cells and some growth factors from scaffolds, making them suboptimal tissue replacements. Chemical cross-linkage of tissue …

Coordination And Sustainability Of River Observing Activities In The Arctic, James W. Mcclelland, Suzanne E. Tank, Robert G. M. Spencer, Alexander I. Shiklomanov Jan 2015

Coordination And Sustainability Of River Observing Activities In The Arctic, James W. Mcclelland, Suzanne E. Tank, Robert G. M. Spencer, Alexander I. Shiklomanov

Faculty Publications

To understand and respond to changes in the world’s northern regions, we need a coordinated system of long-term Arctic observations. River networks naturally integrate across landscapes and link the terrestrial and ocean domains. Changes in river discharge reflect changes in the terrestrial water balance, whereas changes in water chemistry are linked to changes in biogeochemical processes and water flow paths. Sustained measurements of river water discharge and water chemistry are therefore essential components of an Arctic observing network. As we strive to establish and sustain long-term observations in the Arctic, these two measurements must be coupled. Although river discharge and …

Enriching Christian Hospitality At Malaby's Crossroads Missionary Baptist Church In Knightdale, North Carolina, Barbara Starr Barner Jan 2015

Enriching Christian Hospitality At Malaby's Crossroads Missionary Baptist Church In Knightdale, North Carolina, Barbara Starr Barner

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Hospitality is the welcoming of strangers, family, and friends. In the early biblical and historical traditions, hospitality focused on welcoming the alien and extending resources to them. Hospitality, however, need not be limited to the basic physical needs of the stranger, but spiritual needs are to be addressed as well. In the reflection of Jesus’ work on the cross, Christian hospitality should be the intentional, responsible, and caring act of welcoming or visiting strangers, enemies, the distressed, downtrodden, without regard for reciprocation. The goal of this project was to enhance Malaby’s Christian hospitality culture and take our personal interactions to …
