Case Studies Of Tolerance And Intolerance In Northeast Arkansas Circa 1900-1970, Monica Campbell
Case Studies Of Tolerance And Intolerance In Northeast Arkansas Circa 1900-1970, Monica Campbell
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study is an examination of events in a particular time and place that contributes to a better understanding of a complex culture that allowed white Protestant tolerance and intolerance of other ethnicities, religious creeds, and social and political ideologies to exist in the same petri dish of the Jim Crow South. The Olivetan Benedictine Sisters of Jonesboro, Arkansas faced early Protestant opposition to their Catholic hospital shortly after its opening and again with the arrival of the 1920s Ku Klux Klan. The Sisters’ success provided the script for Reverend Luther Davis Summers, a reactionary Baptist fundamentalist who built a …

Rulers And The Wolf: Archbishop Wulfstan, Anglo-Saxon Kings, And The Problems Of His Present, Nicholas Schwartz
Rulers And The Wolf: Archbishop Wulfstan, Anglo-Saxon Kings, And The Problems Of His Present, Nicholas Schwartz
English Language and Literature ETDs
Until now, Wulfstan, Archbishop of Yorks relationship to and view of Anglo-Saxon kingship has never been comprehensively examined. The lack of attention this topic has received is a glaring omission in Wulfstan scholarship. Wulfstan worked under two kings, \xc6thelred and Cnut, and he had an interest in Edgar that has long been recognized. In response to Wulfstan's career under these kings and his interest in Edgar, scholars have been far too ready to assume that the archbishop's view of kingship was straightforward. It has too long been taken for granted that Wulfstan operated under Cnut in the same manner as …

Do Clergy In Hidalgo County, Texas Serve As A Bridge Or Barrier To Mental Health Services?, John C. Park
Do Clergy In Hidalgo County, Texas Serve As A Bridge Or Barrier To Mental Health Services?, John C. Park
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Clergy play the role of frontline mental health (MH) workers for many Americans (Ellison et al., 2006; Wang et al., 2005; Winet, Majors, & Stewart, 1979). There is insufficient information in regards to what the clergy believe about MH and how they respond to MH related concerns. What we know indicates that clergy are not sufficiently equipped or trained to respond adequately to people suffering from issues of MH. Using face to face interview process, 301 clergy members of the faith based organizations (FBO) in Hidalgo County, Texas (HCT) were interviewed. Key findings suggest that the clergy engage in significant …

Six Key Concepts In Training Evangelical Lay Chaplain For Effective Local Hospital Ministry, Lisa Kanne
Six Key Concepts In Training Evangelical Lay Chaplain For Effective Local Hospital Ministry, Lisa Kanne
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Many professional hospital chaplaincy organizations have ethics statements that specifically prohibit paid chaplains from proselytizing, unless specifically requested by the patient. The intention of the dissertation is to train lay chaplains in what to communicate with the patients, family and friends. Restrictions will be imposed on lay volunteer chaplains by the hospital and the chaplaincy department dealing with proselytizing and other topics concerning religion. The presentation will introduce biblical principles regarding ministering to the sick and dying, providing comfort to those who are hurting, and fostering hope and who are grieving. Between the survey findings and the interview key concepts …

Out Of The Silence, The Men Of Naujan Speak: Tagalog Texts From The Seventeenth Century, Damon L. Woods
Out Of The Silence, The Men Of Naujan Speak: Tagalog Texts From The Seventeenth Century, Damon L. Woods
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
From Naujan on the island Mindoro in the seventeenth-century Spanish Philippines emerged two petitions written in Tagalog and addressed to the archbishop of Manila, asking for the continued presence of Jesuits replacing the secular priests assigned there. A close examination of the texts points to the resident Jesuit as the force behind these petitions. Thearticle argues that, apart from refracting the conflict between the regular and secular clergy over the control of parishes, these documents recognize the agency of the men who signed it. Also explored are the question of the documents’ survival and the rewriting of history using materials …
