Improving Utilization Of 2012 Asccp Guidelines In A Family Practice Setting, Michelle M. Mccormick, Mary Barger

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

The purpose of this evidence-based project is to decrease unnecessary colposcopy referrals using provider education and user friendly tools. This is accomplished by increasing utilization of the 2012 American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) Guidelines at a Military Treatment Facility Family Practice Clinic. Despite clear cervical cancer screening guidelines, nationwide, women are continuing to have unnecessary Pap testing regardless of HPV status. Over screening can result in an increase in false positive results, leading to rising healthcare costs, additional office visits, and stress to the patient from procedures that yield little useful information or decrease in morbidity. Although …

Vap Prevention In The Cticu, Pres Lorenzo

Master's Projects and Capstones

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (2015) has cited ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) as the most common infection in the ICU. In 2014, four episodes of VAP were identified in the 25-bed adult cardio-thoracic ICU (CTICU), a dynamic clinical environment within an academic medical center in Northern California specializing in complex cardiac surgery patients, including heart and lung transplants. In early 2015, the CTICU embarked on an evidence-based project to decrease the number of episodes of VAP to zero. Using the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation as the theoretical framework and the CUSP (Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program) standards as …

Incorporating Situational Crisis Communication And Attribution Theories Into A Crisis Communication Plan For Xyz Organization, Linda Kay Gorman May 2015

Incorporating Situational Crisis Communication And Attribution Theories Into A Crisis Communication Plan For Xyz Organization, Linda Kay Gorman

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

A crisis can be defined as “an unexpected, non-routine event that creates uncertainty and threatens an organization’s priority goals” (Dean, 2004, p. 192). If not handled properly, it may have negative effects on the organization’s reputation and overall viability. Therefore, it is essential that organizations prepare an effective crisis response plan to implement once a crisis occurs. Situational crisis communication theory (SCCT) is a proven theory used in developing effective crisis response strategies. This theory asserts that organizations must select the crisis strategies most appropriate to the type of crisis (Coombs, 2006). Heider’s attribution theory asserts that how we react …

Corrections Reform In Kosovo: A Qualitative Study Of Canadian Corrections Advisers’ Experiences In A Post-Conflict Environment, Danielle Murdoch

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

This case study of corrections reform in Kosovo contributes to the growing academic literature on corrections reform during peacebuilding missions in post-conflict environments. Fourteen Canadian corrections advisers who were deployed to Kosovo between 1999 and 2006 were interviewed about the dynamics and challenges they experienced abroad. Interview transcripts were coded and analysed using NVivo10. Five key themes emerged from the data: the importance of understanding the local context; the prevalence of corruption; the lack of attention and resources devoted to corrections reform in post-conflict Kosovo; the challenges of providing safe and secure confinement for prisoners detained in facilities staffed by …

Project Stakeholder Management In The Clinical Research Environment: How To Do It Right, Seithikurippu R. Pandi-Perumal, Sohel Akhter, Ferdinard Zizi, Girardin Jean-Louis, Chellamuthu Ramasubramanian, R. Edward Freeman, Meera Narasimhan

Publications and Research

This review introduces a conceptual framework for understanding stakeholder management (ShM) in the clinical and community-based research environment. In recent years, an evolution in practice has occurred in many applicants for public and non-governmental funding of public health research in hospital settings. Community health research projects are inherently complex, have sought to involve patients and other stakeholders in the center of the research process. Substantial evidence has now been provided that stakeholder involvement is essential for management effectiveness in clinical research. Feedback from stakeholders has critical value for research managers inasmuch as it alerts them to the social, environmental, and …

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between And Among Power, Trust And Job Satisfaction Of Nurse Managers In Acute Care Hospitals Using Rogers Science Of Unitary Human Beings, Maureen A. Schneider May 2015

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between And Among Power, Trust And Job Satisfaction Of Nurse Managers In Acute Care Hospitals Using Rogers Science Of Unitary Human Beings, Maureen A. Schneider

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Defined as control and freedom, power is often characterized as hierarchical. Power-as-freedom exists as a unitary manifestation of the whole and is acausal. Thus a worldview that emphasizes mutual process rather than a causal (control) view supports a culture of trust in the healthcare environment that generates a committed and a thriving work force. When nurse leaders support a climate of trust, managers develop a sense of commitment to the organization which may lead to job satisfaction. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence supporting the relationship between power, trust and job satisfaction among nurse managers.

Purpose: The …

The Relationship Between Work–Family Conflict, Correctional Officer Job Stress, And Job Satisfaction, Gaylene Armstrong, Cassandra A. Atkin-Plunk, Jessica Wells

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Balancing demands between work and family domains can strain even the most resourceful employee. When the tipping point of conflict between the two is reached, a negative impact on employee well-being can result. Within correctional environments, the psychosocial well-being of officers is critical given the potentially significant impact of having a “bad day on the job.” This study examines work–family conflict as it relates to job stress and job satisfaction within a diverse sample of correctional officers (N = 441) employed at 13 public, adult correctional facilities in a Southern state. Findings indicate strain and behavior-based work–family conflict and …

Examining School Counselor Advocacy For Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Students: An Assessment Of Factors Toward Action, Jack Simons May 2015

Examining School Counselor Advocacy For Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Students: An Assessment Of Factors Toward Action, Jack Simons

Dissertations

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) students have been historically marginalized and at-risk for school dropout (Pope, Bunch, Szymanski, & Rankins, 2004), and school counselors advocate for them (ASCA, 2013a). For this survey study, empirical and conceptual literature pertaining to factors that were hypothesized to relate to school counselor advocacy for LGB students were reviewed. In particular, there has been limited empirical data that have addressed this issue. The underlying theoretical framework applied was the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) (Ajzen, 1985). The TPB has been used to predict a variety of behaviors such as teaching students with special needs (Casebolt …

The Implementation Of A Promotion/Retention Policy To Effect Change In Student Achievement In Third Grade Reading/Language Arts, Donna N. Shea

Theses and Dissertations

For decades there has been an ongoing push to increase student achievement through large-scale policy reform and yet far too many students in the United States still perform below proficiency levels with achievement gaps according to race and socio-economic status. Choctaw County School District (CCSD) was no different, as low performance, especially in reading/language arts, and achievement gaps according to race and SES were present. To address these issues, CCSD implemented a K-2 promotion/retention policy in 2008 to improve student achievement. The primary purpose of the study was to investigate how a school district’s implementation of a K-2 policy for …

A Comparison Of Communication Practices In Hazing And Domestic Violence Situations, Page Garbee May 2015

A Comparison Of Communication Practices In Hazing And Domestic Violence Situations, Page Garbee

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Hazing is an extremely dangerous practice that has plagued society for thousands of years. Despite its extensive history, meaningful solutions are seriously lacking and instead the problem appears to be escalating in frequency and severity. By comparing hazing to domestic violence and using a social constructionist lens to examine the issue, this paper aims to propose solutions. Ultimately, the solution lies in a breaking of the cycle or disruption of the negative patterns in place. However, in order to accomplish this, changes are necessary both within the organizations that generally practice hazing and society.

An Examination Of The Volunteer Coordinator's Influence On Church Volunteers' Intent-To-Continue At The Largest Protestant Churches, Jason Berton Golden May 2015

An Examination Of The Volunteer Coordinator's Influence On Church Volunteers' Intent-To-Continue At The Largest Protestant Churches, Jason Berton Golden

Dissertations

Volunteers contribute to the production of goods and services by easing the burden of the paid workforce while not increasing costs. Today’s volunteers tend to be highly trained, skilled professionals looking for a place to invest their time and skills. Churches are the largest single recipient of many volunteers’ efforts. Despite this fact, volunteerism is on the decline in churches.

Once recruited, attrition rates can climb as high as 40% in the first 12 months following training of volunteers. Therefore, the greatest challenge churches face is turnover. Not only does turnover lead to reduced production; it also incurs added expenditures …

Acceptance Of Change: Exploring The Relationship Among Psychometric Constructs And Employee Resistance, Brian Dunican May 2015

Acceptance Of Change: Exploring The Relationship Among Psychometric Constructs And Employee Resistance, Brian Dunican

Dissertations

Change is inevitable and can influence numerous events inside and outside an organization. The contrasting attitudes of acceptance and resistance to change are an increasingly interesting topic in today’s global, ever-changing, and competitive environment. Discovering the behavioral origins of employees’ reactions to change is an integral part of understanding the way in which individual mindset may play a role in coping with organizational change and resistance. This body of knowledge may give organizations insight for creating a competitive advantage over their counterparts. Conceivably, it can be argued that some researchers view change as a process of gradual adaptation that is …

Using Critical Incidents: The Development Of A Behaviorally Based Training Program For Supervisor Citizenship Behavior And Feedback Skills, Jody J. Lecheler May 2015

Using Critical Incidents: The Development Of A Behaviorally Based Training Program For Supervisor Citizenship Behavior And Feedback Skills, Jody J. Lecheler

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It has been argued (Greer, 2013) that supervisors are a critical component in organizational effectiveness. Supervisors are required to hold many roles within the organization (Evans, 1965). Specifically, employees often see supervisors as representatives of the organization, while the organization depends on supervisors to maintain production (Greer, 2013). Many supervisors also fill a variety of other organizational roles such as mentor, trainer, motivator, disciplinarian, evaluator, and leader (Evans, 1965). For these reasons, effective supervisors are crucial to organizational success. The present study developed a behaviorally based training program for supervisors for a poultry processing organization. The training program content included …

Participants from diverse church denominations (N = 208) completed an online survey questionnaire asking them to think about a particular change they had experienced in their current or former church. The results of statistical analysis showed: (a) Church members´ beliefs regarding discrepancy, efficacy, principal support, and valence, positively …

The Chromatin Remodeler Chd5 Regulates Neural Cell Fate Through The Histone Demethylase Utx, Dong-Woo Hwang May 2015

The Chromatin Remodeler Chd5 Regulates Neural Cell Fate Through The Histone Demethylase Utx, Dong-Woo Hwang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Neural stem/progenitor cells (NSCs) in the mammalian brain are multipotent progenitor cells that give rise to the major neural lineages such as neurons, oligodendrocytes and astrocytes. Execution of precise spatiotemporal cell fate decisions of NSCs is regulated by cell type-specific gene expression programs. The role of chromatin remodeling proteins in cell fate decisions is not well understood. Here I present evidence that Chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 5 (Chd5) facilitates tri-methylation of lysine 27 of histone H3 to modulate the repressive mark H3K27me3, through which neural-specific gene expression programs are specified. Chd5-deficient NSCs have aberrant enrichment of the CD24Low neuronal …
