Inventory Management Modeling With Markov Decision Process (Mdp) For Equitable Distribution Of Supplies Under Uncertainty, Fianu Sefakor
Theses
Food insecurity is defined as the situation where people are not able to access enough food at all times for an active, healthy life. The 2012 food security report stated that 49 million Americans including children lived in food insecure households. Many individuals suffering from food insecurity obtain assistance from governmental programs and nonprofit agencies. Food banks are one of many non-profit organizations assisting in the fight against hunger. They serve communities by distributing food to those in need through charitable agencies. Many of the food distributed by the food bank comes from donations. These donations are received from various …

Blood specimens were diagnosed for Plasmodium infection using CareStartTM Malaria Pf/Pv Combo test. The blood type was determined from blood samples using antisera A and antisera B. In addition, the height …
Organizational Ethics For Sponsorship And Governance In Catholic Healthcare, Alex Garvey
Organizational Ethics For Sponsorship And Governance In Catholic Healthcare, Alex Garvey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Catholic healthcare in the U.S. is distinctive in its organizational structure insofar as it typically has Sponsorship as well as Governance oversight, reflecting the Catholic social tradition and organizational ethics to engage both patient care and the public good. Sponsorship deals with the mission and identity of Catholic organizations to ensure that they implement the Catholic social tradition. Governance deals with organizational ethics to ensure that the organization's values (reflecting its mission and identity) influence all aspects of the institution. Because these are intricately connected, the dissertation deals with them in an integrated manner, hence the combined focus upon Sponsorship …
Non-Traditional Therapeutic Interventions For At-Risk Youth & Students With Complex Support Needs: Equine Therapy, Erin J. Grimm
Non-Traditional Therapeutic Interventions For At-Risk Youth & Students With Complex Support Needs: Equine Therapy, Erin J. Grimm
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The increased need for effective interventions and the challenge of working with children and youth with complex support or at-risk needs such as emotional disorders, physical and mental health needs as well as autism; have resulted in the design of many non-traditional therapeutic interventions, such as various experiential therapies, animal-assisted therapy, expressive therapies, wilderness therapy, and adventure-based therapy (Suarez, 2005). For the purpose of this dissertation, the researcher will explore the non-traditional therapeutic intervention of equine therapy and its effect on the social and emotional development of three diverse families who reside in Western Pennsylvania. The researcher will also investigate …
A New Ethical Model For The Analysis Of Care For Refugee Women Who Experience Female Genital Cutting, Sharon R. Higginbothan
A New Ethical Model For The Analysis Of Care For Refugee Women Who Experience Female Genital Cutting, Sharon R. Higginbothan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States is rapidly becoming a location for refugee women who are migrating from countries that embrace different and distinctive practices. One such practice is Female Genital Cutting/ mutilation (FGC/m). FGC is a medical procedure that alters the natural structure and functioning of the female body. It is also a cultural tradition and custom. Until recently, worldwide studies estimated that approximately 80 to 140 million women have undergone FGC and that 228, 000 of those women live in the U.S. However, the estimate of women and girls in the U.S. living with or at risk from FGC has grown …
How To Attain Sustainable Education In Sierra Leone: A Policy Design For Sanda Tendaren Chiefdom, Ahmed Lamin Sheriff
How To Attain Sustainable Education In Sierra Leone: A Policy Design For Sanda Tendaren Chiefdom, Ahmed Lamin Sheriff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Socioeconomic inequalities affect the access to affordable and sustainable education in Sierra Leone: Sanda Tendaren Chiefdom. Education is a crucial part of the chiefdom's development. It has a direct affect on the living standards of the citizens of the chiefdom and a subpar system can negatively impact Chiefdom's economic development and stunt societal participation in political discourse. If access to affordability and sustainability of education are addressed seriously, the short and long-term impact for Sanda Tendaren chiefdom will be tremendous and lasting. Chiefdom villagers will have access to improved school buildings closer to their homes and education will be affordable …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
In order to address the problem of an unhealthy workforce, employers often implement disease prevention and health promotion strategies, referred to as worksite wellness programs. The purpose of this study was to examine employees' interests and preferences regarding worksite exercise programs. To collect data, a 12 item survey was developed and administered to employees from a company based in Rochester, Minnesota. A total of 21 participants completed the survey (66.7% male, 28.6% female). The mean age was 51 years old. The findings of the study indicated an interest in worksite exercise programs and that incentives may motivate employees to participate …
Extensive And Persistent Disruption Of Neurovascular Coupling By A Single Cerebral Microinfarct, Philipp Mcconnell Summers
Extensive And Persistent Disruption Of Neurovascular Coupling By A Single Cerebral Microinfarct, Philipp Mcconnell Summers
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Cerebral microinfarcts (CMI), microscopic brain lesions caused by blockade of small blood vessels, have recently emerged as a potential determinant of cognitive decline. Though small in size, our recent work demonstrated that a single, strategically placed CMI was sufficient to disrupt sensory input in a behavioral task. However, the means by which such small lesions disrupt brain function remain poorly understood. We imaged vascular function in awake, head-fixed mice using two-photon microscopy to examine the impact of CMI on neurovascular coupling. CMI were generated in cortex by photothrombotic occlusion of single penetrating vessels through a thinned-skull cranial window. Vibrissa-evoked dilation …
Biological Implications Of Glycation In Breast Cancer, Katherine Rose Walter
Biological Implications Of Glycation In Breast Cancer, Katherine Rose Walter
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease that affects close to two million women each year. Of these women, seventy percent express estrogen receptor alpha, a member of the nuclear receptor subfamily that is activated in response to estrogen. Our research has shown an alternate mechanism by which estrogen receptor alpha is activated and subsequently elicits its cancer promoting effects. The process of glycation involves the non-enzymatic addition of sugar moieties to biological macromolecules which produce reactive metabolites known as advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These metabolites have been shown to be responsible for many of the complications associated with diabetes …

An Epigenetic Hypothesis For The Genomic Memory Of Pain, Sebastian Alvarado, Maral Tajerian, Matthew Suderman, Ziv Machnes, Stephanie Pierfelice, Magali Millecamps, Laura S. Stone, Moshe Szyf
Publications and Research
Chronic pain is accompanied with long-term sensory, affective and cognitive disturbances. What are the mechanisms that mediate the long-term consequences of painful experiences and embed them in the genome? We hypothesize that alterations in DNA methylation, an enzymatic covalent modification of cytosine bases in DNA,serve as a “genomic” memory of pain in the adult cortex. DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism for long-term regulation of gene expression. Neuronal plasticity at the neuroanatomical, functional, morphological, physiological and molecular levels has been demonstrated throughout the neuroaxis in response to persistent pain, including in the adult prefrontal cortex (PFC). We have previously reported …

Mechanisms Of Satiation In The Nudibranch Melibe Leonina, Colin Lee
Mechanisms Of Satiation In The Nudibranch Melibe Leonina, Colin Lee
Master's Theses and Capstones
In recent years, scientists have begun to study satiation as a means of understanding changes in motivational state. Satiated animals not only show a reduction in feeding behaviors, but also in locomotion, and even show changes in their responses to various stimuli. Therefore, satiation is a qualitative change in the behavioral state of an animal. Although the behavioral characteristics of satiation are well understood, as are the changes in hormone release following a meal, the neural correlates of satiation are less understood. In particular, few studies have attempted to determine how satiating signals reconfigure feeding neural networks. To begin to …

2014 Oregon General Assistance Study, Karen Cellarius, Mary Oschwald, Sandra Marie Leotti
Regional Research Institute for Human Services
In early 2014, the Oregon legislature and the state Department of Human Services (DHS) commissioned a study to gather input from consumer and non-consumer stakeholders regarding how to most effectively meet the needs of childless adults with disabilities. This study was designed to answer the following questions: (1) What services for childless adults with disabilities exist within Oregon and in other states? (2) What is the need today? and (3) What potential program structures and funding options might address the needs or the target population while also addressing any barriers experienced with the previous program? The following synopsis describes the …

This essay results from a half-century spent observing the development and stagnation of a once vital music form, jazz. Curiosity spurred its evolution when a successor to John Coltrane failed to emerge within a few years of his early death. Over the ensuing decades, I became concerned that advancing technology and the 1976 Copyright Act had fundamentally undermined our cultural ecology.
Unnoticed over the past century, technology has changed our experience of expressive culture, (the stories, images, and melodies that copyright most strongly protects), from live performance in social settings to solitary consumption of recorded media. Neurologically and physiologically this …
A Capabilities Approach To The Non-Identity Problem, Jared S. R. Thomas
A Capabilities Approach To The Non-Identity Problem, Jared S. R. Thomas
CMC Senior Theses
Most recent attempts at solving the Non-Identity Problem have focused on providing a deontological solution to the problem, often by giving special attention to rights. In this paper, I argue for a solution that focuses on highlighting the morally permissible second-personal reasons and claims that nonidentity victims may have. I use a natural marriage between a Kantian conceptualization of what it means to be free and equal—being one’s own master—and Nussbaum’s Capabilities Approach to identify the rights that all individuals, current and future are assigned. I claim that these rights, or capabilities, are what all are entitled to master for …
Deconstructing The Third Rail: An Analysis Of The Issue Of Poverty In The United States Through The Lens Of Social Security, Nikita Mehandru
Deconstructing The Third Rail: An Analysis Of The Issue Of Poverty In The United States Through The Lens Of Social Security, Nikita Mehandru
CMC Senior Theses
The ongoing debate over welfare in the United States is rooted in the long-standing tension between the nation’s commitment to providing for its most vulnerable and a deep-seated belief that such support can corrupt its recipients. Social Security has struck this balance and appeals to the masses with its pay-as-you-go system and universally distributed benefits. Yet, the solvency of Social Security is threatening the program that has attempted to guard against old age and disability for the last eighty years. This paper examines how the perception of poverty in the United States is a hindrance when tackling social welfare policies. …

Taming The Tigers: Domestic Violence, Legal Professionalism, And Well-Being, Jill C. Engle
Faculty Scholarship
Domestic violence kills thousands of American women every year. In 2013, one of them was my client. My law school clinic represented a woman divorcing her abusive husband after twenty years of marriage. Three days after we served him with the divorce complaint, he walked into the grocery store where she worked and shot her dead. He then turned the gun on himself, and died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The lead student working her case listened in horror as one of our local colleagues who had heard the breaking news described it to her in a phone call to the …

Exponentially Increasing Incidences Of Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma In Europe Correlate With Low Personal Annual Uv Doses And Suggests 2 Major Risk Factors, Stephen Merrill, Samira Ashrafi, Madhan Subramanian, Dianne E. Godar
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
For several decades the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) steadily increased in fair-skinned, indoor-working people around the world. Scientists think poor tanning ability resulting in sunburns initiate CMM, but they do not understand why the incidence continues to increase despite the increased use of sunscreens and formulations offering more protection. This paradox, along with lower incidences of CMM in outdoor workers, although they have significantly higher annual UV doses than indoor workers have, perplexes scientists. We found a temporal exponential increase in the CMM incidence indicating second-order reaction kinetics revealing the existence of 2 major risk factors. From epidemiology …
Effects Of Proline And Glycine On The Cnidocyte Discharge Of Hydra Magnipapillata, Janine R. Appleton
Effects Of Proline And Glycine On The Cnidocyte Discharge Of Hydra Magnipapillata, Janine R. Appleton
Honors Theses and Capstones
The sense of taste enables animals to utilize environmental cues to detect favorable foods. Through specialized sensory receptors, Cnidarians employ stinging cells called cnidocytes to perform a variety of activities such as locomotion, capturing prey, inducing of feeding responses, and defense. Their discharge is highly regulated by mechanical and chemical signals that are mediated by a complex system including the opsin and taste pathways. Taste 1 Receptors (T1R) have previously been isolated in vertebrates but only until recently, have been noted in invertebrates. Receptors specific to L- amino acids corresponding to the taste sensation of umami, were studied to determine …

Mental Health In Diabetes Prevention And Intevention Programs In American Indian/Alaska Native Communities, Wynette Whitegoat, Jeremy Vu, Kellie Thompson, Jennifer Gallagher
Buder Center for American Indian Studies Research
American Indian and Alaska Natives youth and adults experience higher rates of type 2 diabetes and mental health problems than the general United States population. Few studies have explored the relationship other than detail the two issues independently. The present review aims to identify programs that seek to prevent/treat type 2 diabetes and mental health disorders in the American Indian and Alaska Native population. Available programs were reviewed for AI/AN adults and youth who suffer with both. As part of the review process, databases were searched for peer reviewed published studies. It was found that very few programs effectively incorporate …
