This is an exhilarating time to be in public health! Internationally, the digital world has created an environment for the economic security needed to protect health and promote healing of all mankind. Globalization allows scientists to treat and track diseases in ways that have never been possible. In the United States (U.S.), the federal mandate for equal access to health care has opened a plethora of imaginary and tangible boundaries of which were antecedents to just about every–ism known to public health providers. With this exciting reform comes the need for workforce awareness and new ways of thinking and …

Challenging Race-Based Stereotypes About Gay And Bisexual Men’S Sexual Behavior And Perceived Penis Size And Size Satisfaction, Christian Grov, Lena D. Saleh, Jonathan M. Lassiter, Jeffrey T. Parsons

Publications and Research

Racial prejudice and stereotyping in gay and bisexual communities may be important contextual factors that contribute to racial disparities in HIV. In an effort to challenge race-based stereotypes regarding gay and bisexual men’s sexuality, we sought to determine the extent to which race and ethnicity were associated with (1) racial homophily (i.e., same-race partnerships), (2) sexual behavior (e.g., number of partners, condomless anal sex (CAS), sexual position (top/versatile/bottom)), and (3) perceived penis size and size satisfaction. Data were taken from a survey of 1,009 gay and bisexual men recruited using a street-intercept method at gay, lesbian, and bisexual community events …

The False Dichotomy Between Suggestive And Descriptive Trademarks, Jake Linford Jan 2015

The False Dichotomy Between Suggestive And Descriptive Trademarks, Jake Linford

Scholarly Publications

Classifying a trademark as descriptive rather than suggestive fundamentally alters the scope of trademark protection. A descriptive mark, derived from a feature of the product or service sold, only qualifies for protection after the mark has acquired source significance, i.e., consumers see it as a trademark. A suggestive trademark, which indirectly invokes qualities of the product or service, is protected without evidence of source significance. Courts often struggle to distinguish between suggestive and descriptive marks. The effort would nevertheless be reasonable if the differences between suggestive and descriptive marks justified their disparate legal treatment. But in light of cognitive and …

Promoting An Equitable Eating-Out Food Environment Through The Application Of A Food Justice Frame: A Case Study, Aj Bisesi Jan 2015

Promoting An Equitable Eating-Out Food Environment Through The Application Of A Food Justice Frame: A Case Study, Aj Bisesi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This case study examines the effectiveness of developing and applying a "food justice frame" as a mobilization tool to promote an equitable Eating-out Food Environment (EOFE) in an urban neighborhood of Pittsburgh. A mixed-methods approach was taken to gather material and perception data, culminating in a community action meeting to generate interventions. Findings show that a five-dimensional definition of access is appropriate and effective. The dimensions of accessibility and affordability were less important factors of eating-out behavior (EOB) than the other three dimensions (availability, acceptability, accommodation). Findings also show that the methods used addressed the concerns of both food access …

An Evolutionary Perspective On Human Cross-Sensitivity To Tree Nut And Seed Allergens, Amanda E. Fisher, Annalise M. Nawrocki Jan 2015

An Evolutionary Perspective On Human Cross-Sensitivity To Tree Nut And Seed Allergens, Amanda E. Fisher, Annalise M. Nawrocki

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Tree nut allergies are some of the most common and serious allergies in the United States. Patients who are sensitive to nuts or to seeds commonly called nuts are advised to avoid consuming a variety of different species, even though these may be distantly related in terms of their evolutionary history. This is because studies in the literature report that patients often display sensitivity to multiple nut species (cross-sensitivity) if they have an existing nut allergy. These reports suggest that cross-sensitivity in patients with nut allergies may be caused by an IgE antibody reacting with epitopes present in the seed …

The State Of Poverty And Food Insecurity In Maseru, Lesotho, Resetselemang Leduka, Jonathan Crush, Bruce Frayne, Cameron Mccordic, Thope Matobo, Ts’Episo Makoa, Matseliso Mphale, Mmantai Phaila, Moipone Letsie

Hungry Cities Partnership

This report on food insecurity in urban Lesotho is the latest in a series on Southern African cities issued by AFSUN. Like the previous reports, it focuses on one city (Maseru) and on poor neighbourhoods and households in that city. More than 60% of poor households surveyed in Maseru were severely food insecure. While food price increases worsen food insecurity for poor households, it is poverty that weakens the resilience of society to absorb these increases. This report argues that Maseru residents face specific and interrelated challenges with respect to food and nutrition insecurity. These are poverty; limited local livelihood …

Exploration Of Food Desert Interventions Within The Socio-Ecological Model : A Delphi Study, Courtney Elizabeth Kaye Adams

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the design of different food desert interventions within the context of the socioecological model to describe which level experts think is related to the greatest impact on health outcomes and behavior changes. Twelve experts completed three surveys over a six week period. A document review of recent and current interventions guided the first survey and the subsequent surveys were based on the responses to the first survey. Participants were asked to rank barriers and strategies from least to most influential or effective, as well as sort them into the socioecological model. The …

Perception Of Time Since Smoking Cessation: Time In Memory Can Elapse Faster, Julia N. Soulakova, Brianna C. Bright, Lisa J. Crockett

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Self-reports concerning smoking behaviors are subject to different types of response bias that may severely affect the data quality. This study examined the evidence and extent of backward telescoping bias in reports on time since completely quitting smoking among former smokers. The study goals were to determine whether the extent of bias differs, on average, across subpopulations with diverse sociodemographic characteristics, prior smoking habits and duration of smoking abstinence, and across the survey administration mode (phone, in-person, mixed). The sample included 1,611 subjects who responded to the 2002–2003 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey. Multiple regressions for subjects …

Utilizing Geographic Information Systems To Examine The Demographic And Socioeconomic Characteristics In Food Oasis And Food Desert In Wayne County, Mi, Arwa Hassan Almadan

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In the last few decades, the concept of a food desert has captured the attention of the public and academia. Research has referred to food desert as an area with lack of access to adequate healthy food, especially for those without a vehicle or who live more than ¼ mile walking distance from grocery stores. Although the food desert metaphor has been used in research in different disciplines such as regional planning and public health, this term has been used loosely without a precise definition and without identifying the factors that might impact it.

This research explores and examines the …

What Does It Mean To Do Food Justice?, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux, Rachel Slocum Jan 2015

What Does It Mean To Do Food Justice?, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux, Rachel Slocum

College of Liberal Arts All Faculty Scholarship

'Food justice' and 'food sovereignty' have become key words in food movement scholarship and activism. In the case of 'food justice', it seems the word is often substituted for work associated with projects typical of the alternative or local food movement. We argue that it is important for scholars and practitioners to be clear on how food justice differs from other efforts to seek an equitable food system. In the interests of ensuring accountability to socially just research and action, as well as mounting a tenable response to the 'feed the world' paradigm that often sweeps aside concerns with justice …

The objective of the study was to examine the associations between environmentally relevant low metal concentrations and semen quality parameters in men. The concentrations of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), and lead (Pb) in the seminal plasma and urine were measured from 196 male human subjects in Taiwan. Urinary Cd concentrations were negatively associated with sperm viability (p=0.006). Seminal plasma Cu concentrations of the normal group (>= 15 x 10(6)/ml) were significantly lower than those of the abnormal group (p=0.023). However, the linear regression analysis showed a weak association between Cu concentration and sperm …

Warm Microhabitats Drive Both Increased Respiration And Growth Rates Of Intertidal Consumers, Luke P. Miller, Bengt J. Allen, Felicia A. King, Daisy R. Chilin, Vanessa M. Reynoso, Mark W. Denny

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Rocky intertidal organisms are often exposed to broadly fluctuating temperatures as the tides rise and fall. Many mobile consumers living on the shore are immobile during low tide, and can be exposed to high temperatures on calm, warm days. Rising body temperatures can raise metabolic rates, induce stress responses, and potentially affect growth and survival, but the effects may differ among species with different microhabitat preferences. We measured aerial and aquatic respiration rates of 4 species of Lottia limpets from central California, and estimated critical thermal maxima. In a variety of microhabitats in the field, we tracked body temperatures and …
