The Rise Of Judicial Governance In The Supreme Court Of India, Manoj Mate Jan 2015

The Rise Of Judicial Governance In The Supreme Court Of India, Manoj Mate

Journal Articles

This article analyzes how the Supreme Court of India, through its activism and assertiveness, has emerged as arguably the most powerful court among democratic polities. Over the past four and a half decades, the Court dramatically expanded its role in the realm of rights and governance, asserting the power to invalidate constitutional amendments under the basic structure doctrine, control judicial appointments, and govern in the areas of environmental policy, monitoring and investigating government corruption, and promoting electoral transparency and accountability. In this article, I argue that the Court’s shift toward greater, yet selective, assertiveness in India’s governance can most adequately …

Gender Inequality In The World And Its Implications, Marianna Khachaturyan, E. Wesley F. Peterson Jan 2015

Gender Inequality In The World And Its Implications, Marianna Khachaturyan, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Cornhusker Economics

Worldwide one in three women will be abused sexually or will encounter physical violence during her lifetime (Human Development Report (HDR), 2014). That amounts to about 1.2 billion women. Although gender-related abuse and violence exist everywhere, the issues that come to mind when contemplating gender inequality in high-income countries are usually related to job opportunities, career advancement, or wage disparities. In many developing countries, gender inequality is a much more severe problem; it is manifested in health disparities, limited access to education, and even in the violation of human rights.

Recent Origin Of Low Trabecular Bone Density In Modern Humans, Habiba Chirchir Phd, Tracy L. Kivell, Christopher B. Ruff, Jean-Jacques Hublin, Kristian J. Carlson, Bernhard Zipfel, Brian G. Richmond

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Humans are unique, compared with our closest living relatives (chimpanzees) and early fossil hominins, in having an enlarged body size and lower limb joint surfaces in combination with a relatively gracile skeleton (i.e., lower bone mass for our body size). Some analyses have observed that in at least a few anatomical regions modern humans today appear to have relatively low trabecular density, but little is known about how that density varies throughout the human skeleton and across species or how and when the present trabecular patterns emerged over the course of human evolution. Here, we test the hypotheses that (i) …

Actual Versus Predicted Cardiovascular Demands In Submaximal Cycle Ergometer Testing, Amanda M. Hoehn, Megan J. Mullenbach, Charles J. Fountaine Jan 2015

Actual Versus Predicted Cardiovascular Demands In Submaximal Cycle Ergometer Testing, Amanda M. Hoehn, Megan J. Mullenbach, Charles J. Fountaine

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 8(1) : 4-10, 2015. The Astrand-Rhyming cycle ergometer test (ARCET) is a commonly administered submaximal test for estimating aerobic capacity. Whereas typically utilized in clinical populations, the validity of the ARCET to predict VO2max in a non-clinical population, especially female, is less clear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of the ARCET in a sample of healthy and physically active college students. Subjects (13 females, 10 males) performed a maximal cycle ergometer test to volitional exhaustion to determine VO2max. At least 48 hours later, subjects performed the …

Quantitative Literacy And Co-Construction In A High School Math Course, Mark Russo

Numeracy

This article reports some of the key findings from a practitioner-action research study that analyzed the impact of co-construction on students’ quantitative literacy (QL) and attitudes towards mathematics. Co-construction is a process where students work alongside their teachers to plan units, lessons, and assessments, and this approach was chosen because of its potential to help students advocate for the specific mathematical contexts that would best develop their QL. This yearlong study took place in a public high school, with forty-five students in two different classes participating. Students formally contributed to the development of the course by completing written questionnaires and …

Postruminal Flow Of Glutamate Linearly Increases Small Intestinal Starch Digestion In Cattle, E.J. Blom, D.W. Brake, D.E. Anderson Jan 2015

Postruminal Flow Of Glutamate Linearly Increases Small Intestinal Starch Digestion In Cattle, E.J. Blom, D.W. Brake, D.E. Anderson

South Dakota Beef Report, 2015

Improving performance and efficiency among cattle fed corn-based diets could have large benefit to cattle production in the United States. Starch escaping ruminal fermentation is not efficiently digested in the small intestine; however, postruminal flows of casein (i.e., milk protein) or glutamate (an amino acid or building block of protein) increase small intestinal starch digestion in cattle. The objective of this study was to determine responses of small intestinal starch digestion in cattle to increasing amounts of postruminal glutamate. Increasing amounts of duodenal glutamate linearly increased small intestinal and postruminal starch digestion. These data indicate that postruminal glutamate can provide …

Effect Of Processing Conditions On Nutrient Disappearance Of Cold-Pressed And Hexane-Extracted Camelina And Carinata Meals In Vitro, A. Sackey, E.E. Grings, D.W. Brake, K. Muthukumarappan

South Dakota Beef Report, 2015

Camelina and carinata are oilseed crops that have recently gained increasing attention as biofuel sources. The meals remaining after oil extraction contain relatively high concentration of protein and, because of this, there is interest in using them in livestock diets. However, the nutritional qualities of these meals are not well defined and may vary with processing conditions. In our experiment, we evaluated meals from cold-pressed and solvent-extracted camelina and carinata meals manufactured using 6 different processing conditions. Estimates of total in vitro OM and CP disappearance of each meal were determined according to a modified 2-phase procedure of Tilley and …

Comparison Of Camelina Meal And Distiller’S Dried Grains With Solubles In Diet Of Beef Replacement Heifers, E.E. Grings, A. Sackey, D.W. Brake, G.A. Perry

South Dakota Beef Report, 2015

Biofuel production from different crops yields by-product meals that are available for use as protein sources for ruminant livestock. Variation in nutrient composition among meals may result in different inclusion rates to meet nutrient needs of livestock. In this study we compared distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS), a by-product of ethanol production, and camelina meal, a by-product of biodiesel production, as a protein source in hay-based diets for beef heifers before breeding. Diets were formulated to be similar in energy and protein content by altering the amount of protein source and corn in the diet. Heifers fed the two …

Dairy Consumption And Insulin Resistance: The Role Of Body Fat, Physical Activity, And Energy Intake, Larry A. Tucker, Andrea Erickson, James D. Lecheminant, Bruce W. Bailey

Faculty Publications

The relationship between dairy consumption and insulin resistance was ascertained in 272 middle-aged, nondiabetic women using a cross-sectional design. Participants kept 7-day, weighed food records to report their diets, including dairy intake. Insulin resistance was assessed using the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). The Bod Pod was used to measure body fat percentage, and accelerometry for 7 days was used to objectively index physical activity. Regression analysis was used to determine the extent to which mean HOMA levels differed across low, moderate, and high dairy intake categories. Results showed that women in the highest quartile of dairy consumption had significantly greater …

Journal Articles

Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) develop a myopathy in their ischemic lower extremities, which is characterized by myofiber degeneration, mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired limb function. Desmin, a protein of the cytoskeleton, is central to maintenance of the structure, shape and function of the myofiber and its organelles, especially the mitochondria, and to translation of sarcomere contraction into muscle contraction. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that disruption of the desmin network occurs in gastrocnemius myofibers of PAD patients and correlates with altered myofiber morphology, mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired limb function. Using fluorescence microscopy, we evaluated desmin organization and …
