Implementation Of Physical Education In Underfunded Schools, Cannon Bernarding
Implementation Of Physical Education In Underfunded Schools, Cannon Bernarding
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Physical education (P.E.) is a key aspect of inclusive learning; due to a number of factors, many elementary schools have not been able to sufficiently provide P.E. programs. For this Capstone Project, the researcher examined how underfunded schools can integrate online-based P.E. programs into the curriculum. Through a literature review and interviews with school staff, the researcher found a significant need for P.E. in low-socioeconomic elementary schools. Despite the existence of online-based physical education programs that require little to no funding, many staff from underfunded schools do not know about these types of readily available resources. The literature review and …

Children Birth To Age Three With Feeding Difficulties: Systems Level Perspectives Of Supports, Needs, And Interagency Collaboration, Sondra M. Stegenga
Children Birth To Age Three With Feeding Difficulties: Systems Level Perspectives Of Supports, Needs, And Interagency Collaboration, Sondra M. Stegenga
Masters Theses
Early identification and treatment of feeding difficulties greatly improves outcomes for young children with feeding difficulties (Williams et al., 2006). However, identifying and addressing feeding difficulties in young children, birth to age three, is complex; requiring not only interdisciplinary collaboration (Arvedson, 2008; Bruns & Thompson, 2010; Lefton-Greif & Arvedson, 2008; Williams et al., 2006) but also interagency collaboration due to the various partners involved in service provision for young children, birth to age three (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004). When such interagency collaboration is needed, systems level structural supports are shown to levy the greatest impact on outcomes (Tseng …

Peer Reviewed Articles
Energy-related indicators, including physical activity, energy intake, body mass index (BMI) and adult weight change, have been linked to breast cancer risk. Very few studies of these associations have been conducted among black women, therefore we used the Nashville Breast Health Study (NBHS) to determine whether similar effects were seen in black and white women. The NBHS is a population-based case-control study of breast cancer among women age 25 to 75 years conducted between 2001 and 2010 in and around the Nashville Metropolitan area. Telephone interviews and self-administered food frequency questionnaires were completed with 2,614 incident breast cancer cases ascertained …

Micrornas Are Absorbed In Biologically Meaningful Amounts From Nutritionally Relevant Doses Of Cow’S Milk And Chicken Eggs And Affect Gene Expression In Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells, Cell Cultures, And Mouse Livers, Scott Baier
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Throughout the twenty-first century, evidence has been continually increasing to show the importance of epigenetic regulation in health. While the term “epigenetics” can be applied to many different processes, the focus of this dissertation will be on microRNAs and chromatin structure. Ultimately, both of these forms of epigenetic regulation can be used to fine tune gene expression based on environmental cues. The first three chapters of the dissertation focus on microRNA bioavailability, stability, and function from two commonly consumed food products: cow’s milk and chicken eggs. This important work has been the first of its kind to demonstrate the bioavailability …
Stability And Biological Activity Of Dietary Micrornas, Katherine Howard
Stability And Biological Activity Of Dietary Micrornas, Katherine Howard
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
MicroRNAs play important roles in gene regulation by binding to complimentary sites at the 3’ untranslated region of target mRNA molecules. Binding results in inhibition or degradation of target mRNA. Many bovine and chicken microRNA are homologous with human counterparts enabling gene regulation. A recent study in our lab provided undisputable evidence that endogenous milk microRNAs are bioavailable in humans; resulting in regulation of human gene expression. Based on these findings, we wanted to explore the possibility that other exogenous food borne microRNAs are able to be absorbed through the diet. My thesis surrounds two aims: 1) assessing the stability …
Fighting The Obesity Epidemic: Challenges And Ethics, Grace Brown
Fighting The Obesity Epidemic: Challenges And Ethics, Grace Brown
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In recent decades, a double burden of disease has emerged that requires public health workers to fight both hunger and obesity. The obesity epidemic is unlike other epidemics in that it is largely man-made and dependent on social factors and industry influences, making it difficult to fight. The high global prevalence of obesity is partially a result of globalization, which has encouraged development and the liberalizing of economies all around the world, which in turn has increased the marketing and consumption of obesogenic products. Policy solutions have been proposed and implemented in some countries, but an international solution has yet …

Mediatization In The Arab World: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of New Media Use, Julie B. Wiest, Nahed Eltantawy
Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications
New media (including online and cellular technologies) are being embraced around the world, and younger people have led the way in their adoption. These technologies have spread particularly quickly in the Middle East as a result of innovations in satellite, cellular, and Internet technology. In addition, the Arab Spring was a major milestone for new media adoption in the Middle East and helped define appropriate uses for these technologies. Although they have been used for activism and expression, evidence suggests that these are not (or perhaps are no longer) the primary uses of these technologies among young Arabs. Drawing on …

Medication-Assisted Treatment For Pregnant Women: A Systematic Review Of The Evidence And Implications For Social Work Practice, Amber M. Holbrook, Viba H. Nguyen
Social Work (Graduate) Faculty Publications
Evidence-based practice with pregnant clients who are opioiddependent can be especially challenging because pregnant women are rarely included in clinical trials. The paper synthesizes systematic reviews on the outcomes of medication-assisted treatment for opioid dependent pregnant women and compares the effectiveness of methadone and buprenorphine. We explore evidence on maternal and neonatal outcomes, the safety of breastfeeding, and discuss the implications for social work practice. Searches were conducted in 6 databases. Ten reviews met the inclusion criteria. Results suggest medication-assisted treatment with either methadone or buprenorphine are equally effective in reducing maternal substance use, although methadone may offer slightly higher …

The geriatric population defined as individuals 65 years of age or older is expected to increase to 20% of the total population by the year 2020. This population currently makes up one-third of the surgical population and is projected to double by 2020. The perioperative risks for this population are also increased and pose significant increases in morbidity and mortality. The need for a detailed preoperative assessment is crucial in any surgical patient. It is increasingly imperative for the geriatric surgical patient as assessment is vital for the surgical team to make decisions regarding the projected necessity, plan and desired …

Undergraduate Distinction Papers
Abstract
This statistical study examined low back pain and possible contributing socioeconomic factors using the National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention funds this biannual survey which documents everything from nutrition, physical activity, and overall health status of Americans. The survey uses a nationally representative sample of approximately 10,000 individuals from all races and ethnicities. Across the United States, it is well-known that minorities suffer from a higher burden of illness and disease compared to Caucasians. The goal of this study was to identify if low back pain is also experienced more by minority …

Factors Associated With Youth Athletes Discontinuing Vs. Staying In A Sport, Jessica R. Shibko
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
This study investigated the factors that go into youth athletes deciding to drop out of a sport versus staying in the sport. To test this, current Otterbein University athletes and non-athletes took an online questionnaire that asked specific questions pertaining to their experience in sport participation. We tested the hypotheses that (1) those who began specializing in sports at a younger age will be less likely to continue participation, (2) parental pressure would be a reason for dropout and parental support would influence the athletes to stay in, and (3) those who continued participation in sports would perceive a healthy …

MATERIALS AND METHODS: This exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted with 190 boys and 191 girls aged 5-6 years. Study children were selected from the kindergartens in Tehran, the capital of Iran. All children underwent …
Commodity Of The Quarter: Quinoa: Catalyst Or Catastrophe?, Necia Parker-Gibson
Commodity Of The Quarter: Quinoa: Catalyst Or Catastrophe?, Necia Parker-Gibson
University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations
Quinoa is a grain-like crop that is rich in protein and minerals; its ability to grow on marginal soils improves its attractiveness as a potential solution to hunger in many areas. Primarily adapted to the high Andes, it is drawing increasing amounts of research scrutiny, as researchers and farmers try to create reasonable agronomic solutions to growing populations and continuing loss of arable land. Since it has become fashionable with vegetarians and vegans in the developed world, it may be argued that the crop is less available to its original growers. Issues of economic and political sovereignty complicate the use …

Conservation And Hunting: Till Death Do They Part? A Legal Ethnography Of Deermanagement, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
Claims that hunters are exemplar conservationists would likely come as a surprise to many. Hunters, after all, kill animals. Isn’t there a better way to appreciate wildlife than to kill and consume it? Yet there is no mistake: wildlife managers frequently make the claim that hunters, in the United States at least, are in fact some of the greatest conservationists. This article explores the complex historical and contemporary entanglements between hunting and wildlife conservation in the United States from a regulatory perspective. Such entanglements are multifaceted: hunting provides substantial financial support for conservation and hunters are the state’s primary tools …

Scouting For Approval: Lessons On Medical Device Regulation In An Era Of Crowdfunding From Scanadu’S “Scout”, Colleen Smith
Student Award Winning Papers
This Article will argue that medical device companies should be able to utilize crowdfunding to raise the necessary capital to develop a product. However, because of the risks medical devices pose, any solution that allows medical device companies to employ crowdfunding should ensure the continuing commitment to consumer safety that is at the core of FDA regulation. This Article uses the Scanadu Scout as an example and a staring point for evaluating the use of crowdfunding in the medical device industry. This Article explains how and why Scanadu broke the law when it moved the Scout, an “adulterated or misbranded” …

The issue of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following combat deployment among American military veterans has created significant barriers to successful reintegration. However, positive outcomes also exist in the form of posttraumatic growth. The purpose of this study was to examine Posttraumatic Growth in U.S. military combat veterans by identifying significant relationships among variables leading to successful reintegration of military personnel within the community following combat deployment. Participants in this correlational study included a total of 50 military combat veterans from various eras of conflict. Participants completed a survey battery containing the PTSD Checklist (PCLM), Combat Exposure Scale (CES), Post Deployment …
Preschool Experience Vs. No Preschool Experience: Long Term Effects On Academic And Social Readiness Of Children, Dionne C. Estes
Preschool Experience Vs. No Preschool Experience: Long Term Effects On Academic And Social Readiness Of Children, Dionne C. Estes
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Despite federal and state investments in early education intervention programs, achievement gaps continue to afflict the education system with children from low-income families having an increased need for high quality preschool education. When children from underprivileged families move through the education system, the chances of academic success becomes difficult as the education gap increases year after year, and they fall farther behind. By the time these students enter high school, they are behind academically and unable to meet grade level requirements. Many of them to give up and quit attending school, leading to an increase in the dropout rate.
