Biology
To elucidate the genetic bases of mycorrhizal lifestyle evolution, we sequenced new fungal genomes, including 13 ectomycorrhizal (ECM), orchid (ORM) and ericoid (ERM) species, and five saprotrophs, which we analyzed along with other fungal genomes. Ectomycorrhizal fungi have a reduced complement of genes encoding plant cell wall-degrading enzymes (PCWDEs), as compared to their ancestral wood decayers. Nevertheless, they have retained a unique array of PCWDEs, thus suggesting that they possess diverse abilities to decompose lignocellulose. Similar functional categories of nonorthologous genes are induced in symbiosis. Of induced genes, 7-38% are orphan genes, including genes that encode secreted effector-like proteins. Convergent …

The Effect Of Polyphenol-Rich Black Currant Extract On Lipogenic And Inflammatory Gene Expression In Diet Induced Obesity Mice, Ellen Harness
Honors Scholar Theses
Hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia frequently occur in obese population. As chronic, low-grade inflammation is closely associated with obesity, we investigated if polyphenol-rich blackcurrant extract (BCE) can prevent inflammation and diet-induced metabolic disturbances in mice. Male C57BL/6J mice were given a modified AIN-93M control diet containing high fat/high cholesterol (16% fat, 0.25% cholesterol by weight) or the same diet supplemented with 0.1% BCE (wt/wt) for 12 weeks. No significant differences in total body weight or liver weight occurred between the two groups. BCE-fed mice had fewer crown-like structures (CLS) with concomitant decreases in mRNA abundance of F4/80, CD68, and inhibitor of nuclear …

Blocking Anaplerotic Entry Of Glutamine To Tca Cycle Sensitizes K-Ras Mutant Cancer Cells To Cytotoxic Drugs, Mahesh Saqcena, Suman Mukhopadhyay, Carol Hosny, Arwa Alhamed, Amrita Chatterjee, David A. Foster
Publications and Research
Cancer cells undergo a metabolic transformation that allows for increased anabolic demands wherein glycolytic and TCA cycle intermediates are shunted away for the synthesis of biological molecules required for cell growth and division. One of the key shunts is the exit of citrate from the mitochondria and the TCA cycle for the generation of cytosolic acetyl-CoA that can be used for fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. With the loss of mitochondrial citrate, cancer cells rely on the “conditionally essential” amino acid glutamine (Q) as an anaplerotic carbon source for TCA cycle intermediates. While Q deprivation causes G1 cell cycle arrest …

Obesity And The Effects Of Excess Adiposity On Bone Properties, Health, And Function, Lisa Anne Taylor
Obesity And The Effects Of Excess Adiposity On Bone Properties, Health, And Function, Lisa Anne Taylor
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
This article aims to inform on the relationships that exist between obesity, a fairly modern ailment to the human species, and bone mechanical properties and function. Because the phenomenon that is obesity is so contemporary, it’s progressive effects on the skeletal system are poorly understood. Many previous studies aimed to prove that obesity had a positive effect on bone mass. It was believed that obesity and the excess body mass attributed to it essentially increased BMD by presenting load bearing bones with higher levels of stress than their non-obese counterparts, but this assumption of a positive correlation seems to be …
Must Us Medical Professionals Treat Ebola Patients?, Robert Nowell
Must Us Medical Professionals Treat Ebola Patients?, Robert Nowell
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
In this paper I examine the duty of US healthcare providers (HCPs) to treat patients in the context of the current Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak. In particular, I consider how EVD and subsequent treatment is different from other infectious diseases like influenza or SARS, and how this impacts duty of care for US HCPs. I conclude that, given proper protective measures and support, HCPs at present face a strong moral obligation to care for patients with EVD. This duty is dependent upon individual position and context, and it may change if, for example, the situation turns into a pandemic.

“The Gay Factor” – Exploring The Gay/Straight Wage Gap In Men, Thien Mai
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Is there a wage penalty for being gay? Previous research has indicated a sizable wage gap between gay and straight men of up to 25%. At the same time, national polling indicates increasing acceptance of gay marriage and gay relationships in general. Using the most recent data available (American Community Survey, 2012), I find a gay premium of ~6%, a number which is robust across a number of sample limitations. This premium may be partially related to urban residence which is unobserved in the public use samples of the ACS.

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
The contemporary art world is in a state of great influx and change. In part due to globalization, the arts are producing works that no longer adhere to a dichotomy of male vs. female, black vs. white, Asian vs. American, and so forth. Instead, artists are intermingling these seemingly separate identities into new forms of categorization and selfhood. Using expat artist Zhang Huan’s My America as a vehicle for discussion, this essay examines Chinese post-colonial philosopher Homi Bhabha’s Third Space of Enunciation and its relationship to the rising multiplicity of identity seen in contemporary artists. An argument is made for …

Santa Maria Antiqua: The Amalgamation Of Identity In Early Medieval Rome, Cayce Davis
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
The intent of this investigation is to frame an identity for the church of Santa Maria Antiqua and the urban condition of Rome during the sixth through eighth centuries. Coupling topographical and semiotic information with larger geographic issues, this study interrogates the church and specific individuals associated with it as a way of more comprehensively understanding Santa Maria Antiqua as a visual medium of cultural change and political propaganda. Narrating the complex formation of personal and social identity at the site allows us to understand greater physical and social contexts and explore more thoroughly early Christian Rome.
