The Supreme Court And The New Equity, Samuel L. Bray
The Supreme Court And The New Equity, Samuel L. Bray
Vanderbilt Law Review
The line between law and equity has largely faded away. Even in remedies, where the line persists, the conventional scholarly wisdom favors erasing it. Yet something surprising has happened. In a series of cases over the last decade and a half, the U.S. Supreme Court has acted directly contrary to this conventional wisdom. These cases range across many areas of substantive law-from commercial contracts and employee benefits to habeas and immigration, from patents and copyright to environmental law and national security. Throughout these disparate areas, the Court has consistently reinforced the line between legal and equitable remedies, and it has …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Background:
Plasma lipid levels are highly heritable traits, but known genetic loci can only explain a small portion of their heritability.
Methods and Results:
In this study, we analyzed the role of parental levels of total cholesterol (TC), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C), high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C), and triglycerides (TGs) in explaining the values of the corresponding traits in adult offspring. We also evaluated the contribution of nongenetic factors that influence lipid traits (age, body mass index, smoking, medications, and menopause) alone and in combination with variability at the genetic loci known to associate with TC, LDL‐C, HDL‐C, and TG levels. …

Everyone in the class volunteers with a different nonprofit organization in the Waterville area working with them as assistant grant writers. The class, operating like the board of a granting foundation, reviews organizations' grant applications, makes funding decisions, and allocates one or more grants totaling ,000. We chose to work with the Augusta Food Bank to run a Kids Packs program where food is given to kids who are unable to get an adequate amount of food over the weekend and vacations.

Cooking Solo: Complicating Off-Campus Culinary Independence, William Harley
CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium
People have traditionally learned how to cook from helping and watching their parents. However, many people today teach themselves how to cook when they first live on their own and have to feed themselves. My friend Sarunas moved off campus in January and is currently teaching himself how to cook. Over the past month and a half, I've met with Sarunas to observe how he shops, preps, and cooks his meals in an attempt to understand what resources he draws from to make himself cheap, healthy, and delicious food.

Maximizing Fishmeal Replacement In Commercial Diets For Florida Pompano, Trachinotus Carolinus: Digestibility, Growth And Performance Of Soy Protein Products, Stephen E. Sutton
Open Access Theses
Efforts to reduce the use of fishmeal in aquafeeds for carnivorous marine fish have been a focal point of aquaculture nutrition research in recent years. Building upon such research, this study was designed to compare the digestibility, growth and performance of three soy protein products as potential replacements for fishmeal in feeds for Florida pompano, Trachinotus carolinus. Two soy protein concentrates (Solae SPC™ Profine® and Selecta SPC™) and a fermented soy protein product (Hamlet protein™) were initially tested for digestibility of crude protein, crude energy and 17 amino acids in adult Florida pompano (average weight 577g) using the indirect method …

Dentists’ Role In Diagnosis And Management Of Oral Involvement Of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: Serial Case Report, Theodorus H. Kadrianto, Harum S. Noegroho
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is still a significant health problem due to its relatively high incidence. Rarely, NPC could extend and involve the oral cavity, and may present as an ulceration or exophytic mass. Objectives: To discuss the rare clinical appearance of NPC involving the oral cavity and the significant role of dentists in its diagnosis and management. Case Report: We reported 3 cases of NPC with oral cavity involvement. In the first two cases, the patients presented with persistent oral ulceration with bone exposure and perforation to the above structure. The third patient presented with an ulcerated exophytic mass with …

Beliefs And Practices Of Teachers In Two High-Poverty Urban Schools, Susan C. Domanico
Doctoral Dissertations
This case study examined the beliefs and instructional practices of ten teachers in two high-poverty urban elementary schools. I selected these two schools since the students and staff were racially similar to help isolate the variable of social class. Data were collected on the teachers’ beliefs about low-income students and on instructional practices utilized by teachers. I used social reproduction as the theoretical framework for the research. I conducted structured interviews and announced and unannounced non-participant class observations to determine beliefs and practices used. Data were mapped to four broad concepts: beliefs influenced by social class, beliefs influenced by education …

Purpose
Metabolic syndrome is a set of metabolic risk factors associated with increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. We retrospectively evaluated the effectiveness of a lifestyle modification program (Heart WATCH) geared toward reducing development of chronic disease in women deemed at risk for metabolic syndrome, prediabetes and/or cardiovascular disease.
Methods
Our institution’s Heart WATCH program consists of screening sessions with a multidisciplinary team (physician/nurse, nutritionist and psychologist), a minimum of three visits with a nurse practitioner and weekly follow-up phone calls for a 14-week period. Sociodemographic variables were obtained at initial visit. Biometric testing indices …

Carbon Dioxide Sensitivity In Two Disjunct Populations Of The Pitcher-Plant Mosquito, Wyeomyia Smithii, Daniel L. Allen Jr.
Honors College Theses
The pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, utilizes carbon dioxide receptors primarily on their maxillary palps to seek potential hosts for blood meals. Two disjunct populations of W. smithii were analyzed to test for differences in carbon dioxide sensitivity that would correlate to varying levels of autogeny, ranging from the autogenous Northern populations (from North Carolina through Canada) to the anautonenous Southern populations (Florida – Louisiana), with the Georgia population exhibiting a shift from autogeny to anautogeny over the past two decades. I compared Georgia (Tattnall Co.) and Florida populations using blood feeding assays and olfactometry assays. Willingness to blood feed …

Palm oil contains carotenoid and vitamin E which possess antioxidant properties. A long exposure of heat and chemical substances during the purification process may lower antioxidant activity. This research was conducted to compare antioxidant activity of carotenoid and vitamin E obtained from each stage of three continuous purification process (transesterification, solvolytic micellization, and saponification). Total carotenoid concentration was analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometer at λ 446 nm and total vitamin E concentration was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography, while ester and triglyceride concentration were analyzed by gas chromatography. Antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH assay with incubation time in 60 minutes. …

Considering Shared Power And Responsibility: Diabetic Patients’ Experience With The Pcmh Care Model, Olena Mazurenko Md, Phd, Sheila Bock Phd, Catherine Prato, Margarita Bondarenko
Patient Experience Journal
The patient-centered medical home (PCMH), an innovative primary care model that fosters a stronger, more personal patient-doctor relationship than traditional health care models, should be particularly well suited for the treatment of chronic conditions such as diabetes that require ongoing management by both patients and providers. Despite growing research on the effectiveness of PCMHs in diabetes care, relatively little attention has been given to diabetic patients’ experiences. This qualitative study examines diabetic patients’ experiences at one PCMH setting, using in-depth interviews to understand patients’ perspectives of the shared power and responsibility between patient and provider in their diabetes care. Our …

Involving Family Advisory Councils in decisions that impact pediatric healthcare demonstrates hospitals’ commitment to child- and family-centered care. Yet, reliance on advisors as the sole source of family input has several limitations: infrequent meetings impedes the council’s capacity to address emerging concerns in a timely manner; feedback obtained from a small number of highly-engaged family members may not represent the perspectives of “typical” patients and families; advisors provide feedback in a reactive manner and are generally not equitably involved in problem identification or the initial development of solutions. In recognition of the need to strengthen and advance family partnerships, the …

The Preschool Puzzle: Exploring Variations In Early Childhood Education Teacher Quality Across States, Alice Rockswold
Political Science Honors Projects
There is a growing consensus in the early childhood education community that it is necessary to raise the qualifications of preschool teachers. Yet, little is known about why rigorous degree and training standards have advanced further in some states than others. In this analysis, I explore various political and demographic factors that might account for the uneven support for such standards, with special attention to the role of Head Start as a driver of quality, given its presence and variation in strength across states. Using longitudinal data from the National Institute of Early Childhood Education, I find weak evidence that …

Food-oriented markets, such as food innovation districts (FIDs), have been touted as potential methods to address complex societal issues involving the environment, poverty, and health. On this front the Grand Rapids Downtown Market (DTM) was created in 2013, envisioned as a vibrant public space for local food, entrepreneurship, community health, and jobs. An innovative, collective response to the interconnected and urgent problems of poverty, access, health, diet, and environment, the DTM can serve as a case study through which the value and necessity of a wicked problems framework become apparent. Wicked problems literature demonstrates that collaborative and iterative processes are …

Family Planning, Pregnancy, And Birth In Guatemala: Maya Women And Modern Healthcare, Kelsay Payton
Honors Theses
Within Maya populations in rural Guatemala, childbearing is considered a sacred and spiritual experience, in addition to a physical one. This country is home to some of the highest rates of maternal and infant mortality in Latin America, along with the largest disparities in health care, primarily between the indigenous Maya and ladino women (Schooley 2009). The use of biomedical reproductive services remains surprisingly low among the Maya, while it is continually rising in the ladino populations. To increase the overall reproductive health care in these indigenous communities, attention must be given to the understanding of Maya’s beliefs, therefore enabling …

Structural Evaluation Of Peanut Protein Isolates During Oxidation By Ftir, Ye Lin, Liao Yu, Zhao Mouming
Structural Evaluation Of Peanut Protein Isolates During Oxidation By Ftir, Ye Lin, Liao Yu, Zhao Mouming
Food and Machinery
Peanut protein isolates (PPI) was oxidized by peroxyl radicals derived from 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) and the secondary structure of oxidized PPI were evaluated. Structural changes of PPI were elucidated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Fourier deconvolution combined with iterative curve fitting was used to analyze the amide I of FTIR. After deconvolved amide I FTIR bands, ten major bands associated with conformation of proteins were distinctly observed. Changes in the bands at 1 618 cm-1 and 1 682 cm-1, which arise from the aggregated intermolecular β-sheets, indicated that protein aggregation occurred during PPI oxidation. Quantitative …
