Grappling With Inclusion: Ethnocultural Diversity And Socio-Musical Experiences In Common Thread Community Chorus Of Toronto, Deanna Yerichuk

Music Faculty Publications

This pilot research study explored ethnocultural backgrounds of choristers and their socio-musical experiences participating in Common Thread Community Chorus of Toronto, a community choir that actively pursues cultural inclusion through policies of musical and financial accessibility, as well as choosing repertoire of diverse cultures. A survey of choristers investigated how Common Thread members’ ethnocultural backgrounds informed their perceptions of their musical and social experiences and of the choir’s cultural diversity, working from the assumption that all people have ethnocultural backgrounds. Research findings reveal complex and diverse cultures when singers reflect on their own experiences, but choristers tended to reduce cultural …

The Effects Of Nutrition Pertaining To Fitness And Health, Daniel Swem

University Honors Program

The current research is focused on how nutrition influences both fitness and health. It is important to understand the difference between the two terms. Fitness relates to a person’s ability to perform specific tasks whereas health is a condition of being free of disease or illness. Pertaining to fitness, this study primarily focuses on cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and body composition. (The other components of physical fitness are muscular endurance and flexibility). This research will attempt to answer some highly researched questions. How important is the timing of pre-exercise and post-exercise meals? What foods are beneficial for those seeking to …

Food Waste And Sustainability: Quantifying Food Waste Disposal And Evaluating The Environmental Impacts Of Technologies And Policies, Krista Lee Thyberg

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There has been growing interest in establishing food waste prevention and recovery programs throughout the United States. An interdisciplinary systems approach to sustainable food waste management was taken to explore three integrated food waste issues: 1. the quantity of residential, commercial and institutional food waste disposed in the U.S.; 2. the environmental impact of food waste treatment technologies; and, 3. approaches for sustainable waste system planning and the development of food waste management policies. The dissertation begins with a review of the history, contributing factors, impacts, and current practices regarding food waste in the U.S. and globally. The amount of …

Presentation given at Central Maine Medical Center on December 4, 2015, to build awareness of the role of rehabilitation services in cancer survivor management and discuss strategies to address existing needs. This presentation was based on a project undertaken to determine which physical distress screening tools are most appropriate to trigger a wellness or rehabilitation referral when it is warranted for a survivor. The use of effective screening tools will assist in directing cancer survivors, who experience physical and emotional burdens caused by the disease and subsequent treatment, to access services that will continue to improve their overall quality of …

Public Administration Master’s Projects

This is an evaluation of the Help Everyone Achieve Livelihood (H.E.A.L.) summer youth program for refugees between the ages of 14 and 21. Research into the issue of refugee youth not having sufficient public service programs available to aid in the transition to life in the US was examined in the literature review. Previous research suggests summer programs help form the bridge between the home culture and new culture of refugee youth. The H.E.A.L. program offers a variety of services to their clients which includes cultural orientation, job building, and ESL classes. The program runs six weeks during the summer …

Entrepreneurship, Creativity, And Local Food Systems: Essays On Regional Economic Development In South Carolina, Kristen Lientz

All Dissertations

Within the existing economic development literature, there is a well-established linkage between the presence of skilled human capital and economic growth. A subset of this literature has focused on the role that a specific type of skilled human capital, known as the “creative class,” may play in facilitating regional economic development. This dissertation builds upon the existing creative class literature by examining the factors that have attracted the creative class to the state of South Carolina. In addition, this research gives special attention to the entrepreneurial activities of creative class professionals who engage in small-scale farming. Recent interest surrounding the …

The Problem Of Masculinity For Male Health, Kieran Geary, Maurice Murphy Dec 2015

The Problem Of Masculinity For Male Health, Kieran Geary, Maurice Murphy

Dept. of Management & Enterprise Publications

Men’s health has historically received little attention in terms of consultation, planning, strategy development or project implementation, but in recent years there has been an increased focus on gender in the context of men’s health. Whilst in the past the focus on gender and health in Ireland has tended to be synonymous with women’s health, the significance of gendered health practices (particularly gendered patterns of help-seeking) have more recently come to the forefront in the context of men. Men’s reluctance to seek help and use health services is a concern across most Western cultures. Some commentary has suggested that men …

The Effects Of Meloidogyne Incognita And Heterodera Glycines On The Yield And Quality Of Edamame In Arkansas, Juliet Fultz Dec 2015

The Effects Of Meloidogyne Incognita And Heterodera Glycines On The Yield And Quality Of Edamame In Arkansas, Juliet Fultz

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Edamame (Glycine max), also known as vegetable soybean, was introduced to the United States from Japan in 1890 and has been growing in popularity as a nutrient-rich, low-sugar snack in recent years. In 2012, the American Vegetable Soybean and Edamame, Inc. established the first domestic commercial processing plant in Mulberry, Arkansas and contracted local growers for production. Since the crop is harvested when seed are immature, management practices are different from those for traditional soybean. Plant-parasitic nematodes, particularly Meloidogyne incognita (southern root-knot) and Heterodera glycines (soybean cyst), are common in Arkansas and are pests of concern for edamame growers. Edamame …

Glucose-Fructose Likely Improves Gastrointestinal Comfort And Endurance Running Performance Relative To Glucose-Only, P. B. Wilson, S. J, Ingraham Dec 2015

Glucose-Fructose Likely Improves Gastrointestinal Comfort And Endurance Running Performance Relative To Glucose-Only, P. B. Wilson, S. J, Ingraham

Athletic Performance Research

This study aimed to determine whether glucose-fructose (GF) ingestion, relative to glucose-only, would alter performance, metabolism, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, and psychological affect during prolonged running. On two occasions, 20 runners (14 men) completed a 120-min submaximal run followed by a 4-mile time trial (TT). Participants consumed glucose-only (G) or GF (1.2:1 ratio) beverages, which supplied ~1.3 g/min of carbohydrate. Substrate use, blood lactate, psychological affect [Feeling Scale (FS)], and GI distress were measured. Differences between conditions were assessed using magnitude-based inferential statistics. Participants completed the TT 1.9% (−1.9; −4.2, 0.4) faster with GF, representing a likely benefit. FS ratings were …

Mens Life History, Testosterone, And Health, Louis Calistro Alvarado Dec 2015

Mens Life History, Testosterone, And Health, Louis Calistro Alvarado

Anthropology ETDs

Testosterone is hypothesized to mediate life history trade-offs between reproduction and survival in men, promoting mating effort over other forms of investment, which entails energetic and mortality costs. Sexually dimorphic musculature represents one form of somatic investment in mating. Favorable energy availability is posited to promote preferential investment in mating effort through upregulated testosterone production and augmented musculature, whereas nutritional constraint is predicted to downregulate testosterone to facilitate a diminished, thriftier phenotype. Furthermore, life history trajectories influencing mens testosterone levels have important health implications for androgen-sensitive disease. Here, I examine broad features of men's life history and health, and their …

The Role Of Platelets In The Successful Closure Of The Ductus Arteriosus In Premature Infants After Indomethacin Treatment, Joan Heilskov Dec 2015

The Role Of Platelets In The Successful Closure Of The Ductus Arteriosus In Premature Infants After Indomethacin Treatment, Joan Heilskov

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Premature birth (birth before 37 weeks gestation) remain a global problem with negative consequences profundly affecting the infants, their families, and society. Persistent patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a significant complication seen in preterm infants. Premature infants with persistent PDAs are at increased risk for morbidity and mortality. Indomethacin is reported to successfully close the PDA in only 20-40 percent of infants whose birth weights are less than 1,000g. Common side effects of Indomethacin include renal dysfunction, gastric perforations, and decreased cerebral blood flow and perfusion. Several studies have shown thrombocytopenia is associated with persistent PDA in premature infants who …

Enhancement Of Knowledge And Skills Of Community Midwives In Sindh, Pakistan, Sadia Abbas Ali, Arusa Lakhani, Rafat Jan, Shahnaz Shahid, Marina Baig, Farzana Adnan

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

With a maternal mortality rate of 276 deaths per 100,000 live births, Pakistan is one of the countries with a large share in the percentage of world’s maternal mortality. As an intervention for the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) 4 and 5, the World Health Organization (WHO) strongly suggests that skilled care before, during, and after childbirth can save the lives of women and newborn babies. One of the interventions to ensure care to mothers and babies by skilled care providers is the capacity building training of Community Midwives (CMWs) aiming to improve their midwifery competency.

One such training intervention was …

Portraits Of Children Of Alcoholics: Stories That Add Hope To Hope, Meagan Lacy Dec 2015

Portraits Of Children Of Alcoholics: Stories That Add Hope To Hope, Meagan Lacy

Publications and Research

This literary analysis examines the emergence of children of alcoholics narratives and their growth from "resource" texts to literary subgenre. While early texts offer useful information about parental alcoholism, they are also limited. Namely, they do not adequately mirror the diversity of children, families, and problems associated with parental alcoholism nor do they offer alternatives for children whose parents do not, or cannot, seek treatment for their addiction. Literature, on the other hand, in inviting what philosopher Martha Nussbaum refers to as "narrative play," can help children learn to understand and empathize with others, nourish their inner curiosity, and, most …

Artificial Kingdoms, Lindsey Elsey Dec 2015

Artificial Kingdoms, Lindsey Elsey

All Theses

Fairy or folk tales and fantasy appear to be innocuous means of entertainment in contemporary society. Often relegated as pap for children, this view belies the gruesome origins, cultural significance, and means of personal expression and identity that is afforded to the author and reader/audience through the construction of fantasies. Through the creation of environments and experiences that center on porcelain vessels and sculpture, I explore the expression of uncomfortable desires and situations in the guise of fantasy. In some instances folk and fairy tales act as a means of escapism; an expression of desire for the fleeting and the …

When Is It Mental?, Stuart Glennan Dec 2015

When Is It Mental?, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Most philosophical debate over mental causation has been concerned with reconciling commonsense intuitions that there are causal interactions between the mental and the physical with philosophical theories of the nature of the mental that seem to suggest otherwise. My concern is with a different and more practical problem. We often confront some cognitive, affective, or bodily phenomenon, and wonder about its source – its etiology or its underlying causal basis. For instance, you might wonder whether your queasiness due to something you ate, or whether it is just nervousness, or whether your aunt’s memory loss is a neurological problem or …

Mycorrhizal Roots In A Temperate Forest Take Up Organic Nitrogen From 13c- And 15n-Labeled Organic Matter, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Andrew P. Ouimette, Erik A. Hobbie Dec 2015

Mycorrhizal Roots In A Temperate Forest Take Up Organic Nitrogen From 13c- And 15n-Labeled Organic Matter, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Andrew P. Ouimette, Erik A. Hobbie

All Materials

Background and Aims

The importance of the uptake of nitrogen in organic form by plants and mycorrhizal fungi has been demonstrated in various ecosystems including temperate forests. However, in previous experiments, isotopically labeled amino acids were often added to soils in concentrations that may be higher than those normally available to roots and mycorrhizal hyphae in situ, and these high concentrations could contribute to exaggerated uptake.

Methods

We used an experimental approach in which we added 13C-labeled and 15N-labeled whole cells to root-ingrowth cores, allowing proteolytic enzymes to release labeled organic nitrogen at a natural rate, as …

Keratin 17: A Prognostic Marker And Nuclear Oncoprotein In Cancer, Luisa Fernanda Escobar Hoyos Dec 2015

Keratin 17: A Prognostic Marker And Nuclear Oncoprotein In Cancer, Luisa Fernanda Escobar Hoyos

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Cancer is a fundamentally heterogeneous at virtually every level, ranging from the anatomic site of origin to the histologic type, degree of differentiation, and the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms. Despite dramatic progress in our ability to define cellular and molecular heterogeneity, there has been limited progress in the identification of the cellular mechanisms that define the tumor biology, treatment response, and patient outcome. Prognostic markers have the potential to not only identify patients at greatest risk for disease progression and death, but may also be the underlying drivers that mediate tumor aggression. In turn, these markers could also represent therapeutic targets. …

The Global Determinants Of Health: A Cross-National Study Of Child Mortality In Less-Developed Countries, 1985-2005, Eric Shircliff Dec 2015

The Global Determinants Of Health: A Cross-National Study Of Child Mortality In Less-Developed Countries, 1985-2005, Eric Shircliff

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Rates of child mortality vary greatly across the globe. The lowest rates are found in developed countries, with the lowest located in Iceland at 3 deaths per 1,000 live births. The highest rates exist in less-developed countries, the highest of which located in Niger at 305 deaths per 1,000 live births. Since 1990, the global rate of child mortality has been declining. However, for many less-developed countries this progress is either slow or stopped. Furthermore, the total number of child deaths in less-developed countries overwhelms that of developed nations, accounting for approximately 99% of global child mortality. The purpose of …
