Peers Helping Peers: A Model For Planning A Support Group For Women Struggling With Eating Disorders, Jennifer Sims May 2015

Peers Helping Peers: A Model For Planning A Support Group For Women Struggling With Eating Disorders, Jennifer Sims

Honors Projects

Women are constantly bombarded with images that advertise unrealistic beauty standards. These negative portrayals of women often lead to negative self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, unhealthy dieting, extreme exercising and—in more extreme cases—the development of eating disorders (ED). When treating EDs, practitioners often turn to Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CBT) as the first choice of intervention, but this treatment option lacks the key element of social support. This paper looks to create a model for planning a support group that balances CBT techniques with social support elements. Elements such as self-monitoring, progressive relaxation, homework, goal setting, and psychoeducation will be pulled from CBT models …

The Contemporary Use Of Nurse Practitioners In U.S. Emergency Departments, Jeffrey L. Bevan May 2015

The Contemporary Use Of Nurse Practitioners In U.S. Emergency Departments, Jeffrey L. Bevan

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem: The increased demand for emergency care in the United States (U.S.) has been well-documented and there is growing utilization of nurse practitioners in U.S. emergency departments. However, little is known about the nurse practitioner (NP) role in the emergency department setting within the past five years.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to describe the demographic characteristics of patients, patient conditions treated, diagnostic tests ordered, and procedures performed by nurse practitioners in a national sample of U.S. emergency departments.

Methodology: This secondary analysis used a non-experimental quantitative, descriptive exploratory design to review data from the National Hospital Ambulatory …

Gambling On Court Interpretations Of Care: Approving Leave For Travel Under The Fmla, Heather N. Collinet May 2015

Gambling On Court Interpretations Of Care: Approving Leave For Travel Under The Fmla, Heather N. Collinet

Seventh Circuit Review

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law passed in 1993 to account for changing demographics in the United States. Its intent is to improve work-life balance for employees while improving the overall productivity of employers. Under 29 U.S.C. § 2612, eligible employees are protected should they decide to request unpaid leave from work for the birth of a child, for adoption or fostering a child, because the employee is seriously ill, or “to care for” an employee’s family member with a serious health condition.

Litigation arises in determining what the legislature intended by the phrase “to …

Mj Still Winning In Chicago: The Seventh Circuit Correctly Holds That Jewel-Osco’S Use Of Michael Jordan’S Likeness In Its Advertisement Constituted Commercial Speech, Michael A. Albert

Seventh Circuit Review

Sometimes businesses advertise offers for particular products or services. In addition to product advertising, businesses frequently engage in “image” advertising, where they promote their brand generally rather than a specific product. Both types of advertising may constitute commercial speech. The U.S. Supreme Court commonly defines commercial speech as “speech that proposes a commercial transaction.” Although the Court has addressed this phrase’s meaning, it has never provided a comprehensive method for determining whether a given expression constitutes commercial speech. As a result, some courts interpret this phrase to apply narrowly in scope, while others find that it can be applied broadly. …

Fall Prevention Among Older Adults Living In The Community, Clarissa Silva Lopez

Theses & Dissertations

Older adults are within the fastest population growth rate in the United States, and as the population ages, the potential for falls increases (DHHS, 2011). This was a mixed-method explanatory study that investigated the perceptions of older adults regarding the usefulness, adequacy, and positive experience of fall information among older adults living in the community when received from healthcare professionals during physician’s office visits. The research questions were: 1. What is the relationship among perceptions of usefulness, adequacy, and positive experience of fall information among older adults? 2. Is there a difference in the perceptions of usefulness and adequacy among …

Identifying The Education Needs And Conveying Related Information On Nutrition Topics For Pre-School Age Children By Educating Parents Through Writing And Media Communication., Melissa E. Lichtman May 2015

Identifying The Education Needs And Conveying Related Information On Nutrition Topics For Pre-School Age Children By Educating Parents Through Writing And Media Communication., Melissa E. Lichtman

Senior Honors Projects

As nutrition topics continue to gain media attention the general public is increasingly exposed to nutrition recommendations. The mass communication of health information presents increased education opportunity to promote implementation of healthy habits. In contrast, this increased presence also presents a risk of increased communication of information unsupported by scientific evidence. As these unreliable recommendations are communicated with frequency through popular sources it is the responsibility of healthcare professionals to provide the public with accurate and scientifically supported information. This information must be presented in a clear and appealing way in order to gain the attention of the public, helping …

Architecture Thesis Prep

T

he contention of this thesis

is that architecture designed

for consumption currently

contributes to distancing

consumers from a relationship

with food (speci

failing to participate in earlier

production and processing phases.

If architecture and spatial or visual

relationships have the ability to

there must be potential for design

throughout the food chain- from

farm to fork- with the agency to

do the opposite: contribute to a

more transparent food system and

perhaps even more sustainable

alternatives. With increasing

Swords Into Stethoscopes: How The U.S. Military Could Conduct Medical Diplomacy, Oliver Kendall May 2015

Swords Into Stethoscopes: How The U.S. Military Could Conduct Medical Diplomacy, Oliver Kendall

Political Science Honors Projects

Since the early 1960’s, Cuba and China have won international appreciation by sending doctors abroad to help where they are needed. While there was surprise in some quarters when U.S. military personnel were deployed to combat Ebola in the last months of 2014, the Department of Defense actually has a long history of medical activity. In its current form, DoD medical outreach cannot likely garner soft power in the way that the Chinese and Cuban programs can, but with a few modifications, the U.S. military could be a serious conductor of medical diplomacy that would save countless lives and benefit …

The Effects Of An Evidence-Based Food Allergy Management Plan To Keep Children With Food Allergies Safe At School, Scarlet R. Spain May 2015

The Effects Of An Evidence-Based Food Allergy Management Plan To Keep Children With Food Allergies Safe At School, Scarlet R. Spain

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

The prevalence of food allergies in children has increased 18% between 1997 and 2007 (CDC, 2013). Furthermore, 84% of food allergic children will experience a reaction at school (Powers, Bergren, & Finnegan, 2007). An exposure in a sensitive child may progress quickly into potentially life threatening symptoms and death if not treated. The purpose of this evidence based practice (EBP) project was to determine if implementation of a food allergy management policy in a school setting reduced overall incidence rates of food allergy reactions in school children and to examine compliance to policy guidelines. The project encompassed implementation of a …

Destination Marketing Organizations' Stakeholders And Best Practices, Bonifacio Lopez Torres May 2015

Destination Marketing Organizations' Stakeholders And Best Practices, Bonifacio Lopez Torres

General Human Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

As marketing practices continue to advance, the tourism industry is constantly evolving in terms of marketing strategies and the shifts of the duties of its stakeholders. Different organizations take upon the advancement of their marketing strategies differently, and Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) are not the exception. With so any destination options, travelers may find themselves with too many destinations and too much information to easily make the decision on their own. The main role of the DMOs is to sell the destination using different marketing strategies, using various incentives to make their destination more appealing, and by working with all …

Disciplines Of Memory, Zones Of Life: Archival Bodies In Biopolitical Times, Rachel Ann Walsh May 2015

Disciplines Of Memory, Zones Of Life: Archival Bodies In Biopolitical Times, Rachel Ann Walsh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Working at the sometimes embattled intersections of critical race theory, biopolitics, and trauma and memory studies, my dissertation examines the relationship between the narratives of historical traumas and the biopolitical zoning of life in twentieth-century literature and post-9/11 film. My use of the term “zone†alludes to Roberto Esposito’s imagining of biopower’s optimization of life as an immunitarian enclosure, or the privatization of life and its sustaining resources, and its consequent foreclosure of the ethical obligations of communitas. Foregrounding the geographical, temporal, and affective meanings of “zone†and “zoning†each chapter examines zones that are relegated to the peripheral “elsewheres†…

Comparison Of Four Feedback Methods Used To Help Improve Swimming Relay Exchanges - A Pilot Study, David Luedtke, Bridget Duoos May 2015

Comparison Of Four Feedback Methods Used To Help Improve Swimming Relay Exchanges - A Pilot Study, David Luedtke, Bridget Duoos

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Relays are a part of swimming competitions at all levels and are worth up to twice the points compared with individual events. Relay exchange technique may affect the final time and place of a relay team (Siders, 2010, 2012). The purpose of this pilot study was to compare four methods of feedback provided regarding relay exchanges (time only [TO], time and video [TV], video only [VO], or coach only [CO]) to determine which method had a greater effect on improving relay exchange times. Fifteen males (M age = 15.357 years, SD = 2.7; M height = 170.76 cm, SD = …
