Endothelin-1 Promotes Bovine Corneal Endothelial Cell Proliferation Via A Mapk Pathway: Implications For Keratopathy And Deturgescence, Brandon C. Farmer

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The corneal endothelium is vital in maintaining the functions of the cornea, namely hydration, thickness, and transparency. Diseases that impair the corneal endothelium are currently remedied solely via surgery. These surgeries present obstacles to patients of underserved areas due to cost, ineffectiveness, and lack of access. Trachoma, an infection which can cause corneal opacities, is the leading cause of infectious blindness in the world. In order to eradicate trachoma, epidemiological data is needed. Three villages in Kasigau, Kenya were studied to quantify the occurrence of trachoma in the region. The three villages were found to have adequate access to antibiotics …

Hydroponic Farming: An Opportunity For South Bronx Communities, Adam Keally

Student Theses 2015-Present

A food desert is defined as an area that has little or no access to fresh produce and healthy food options. The South Bronx is a food desert not because there is no food to be found, but because healthy, non processed food is in short supply. The South Bronx is the fattest congressional district in the United States, as well as the poorest. Food deserts are most often accompanied by higher rates of nutrition related diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease and the South Bronx is no exception. This thesis looks into the reason behind …

Hematology/Oncology Articles

Caloric restriction (CR) was recently demonstrated by us to restrict ovarian cancer growth in vivo. CR resulted in activation of energy regulating enzymes adenosine monophosphate activated kinase (AMPK) and sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) followed by downstream inhibition of Akt-mTOR. In the present study, we investigated the effects of metformin on ovarian cancer growth in mice fed a high energy diet (HED) and regular diet (RD) and compared them to those seen with CR in an immunocompetent isogeneic mouse model of ovarian cancer. Mice either on RD or HED diet bearing ovarian tumors were treated with 200 mg/kg metformin in drinking water. …

Home Gardens: A Key To A Sustainable Future, Keara C. Galvin

Student Theses 2015-Present

In today’s world of agribusiness and factory farming, the home garden provides an alternate source of nutritious food at the household level. The home garden occupies a unique place as a source of fresh produce, a place for families to unite, a cultural space to maintain one’s roots, and serves an ecological role in the greater landscapes that these gardens form part of. There is a lack of academic analysis and research done on home gardens. The majority of research on gardens is primarily technical -- tips on maintaining soil quality, on the best plants to grow, etc. Home gardens …

Training Group Home Staff On Nutrition, Kaitlin Carafa

Master's Theses

Currently, more than one-third of adults (more than 72 million people) in the United States are obese (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2014), and therefore obesity is a major public health concern. The prevalence of obesity in the population of individuals with disabilities has been shown to be 2.1 times higher than compared to the general population, and the prevalence is higher in less restrictive settings such as group homes (Saunders et al., 2011). Therefore, interventions aimed to decrease obesity should be created for this population. The purpose of this study is to investigate the need for a …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Racial And Class Achievement Gap In Schooling In The United States, France, And South Africa, Taylor J. Fulcher May 2015

A Comparative Analysis Of The Racial And Class Achievement Gap In Schooling In The United States, France, And South Africa, Taylor J. Fulcher

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This research study focuses on three countries: the United States, France, and South Africa. While the issue of the income and racial achievement gap may seem similar on the surface for these three countries, research suggests that these issues, deeply embedded in each country’s history of racial segregation, economic inequality, and current policies and practices are connected to the struggle of students in acquiring necessary cultural capital. The comparative analysis conducted in this thesis illustrates how schools sort and select students based on racial identity and socioeconomic status, hindering access to cultural capital and affecting student achievement. The outcome of …

The Effects of Phytochemical Tannin-Containing Diets on Animal Performance and Internal Parasite Control in Meat Goats

By

Chassity Wright

Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) resistance has been reported against almost all chemical anthelmintics available for its control. H. contortus has a remarkable ability to develop resistance and threatens the viability of the goat industry in many regions of the world. Consequently, there is an urgent need to understand the genetic mechanisms underlying anthelmintic resistance and to discover new alternative methods of chemical and non-chemical control. With chemical anthemintics failing, this has led to the evaluation of plants as a natural …

Mentoring Under-Resourced People, Virginia M. Sandlin

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Fighting hunger has been a global problem for many generations. Public and private businesses, churches, along with nonprofit organizations, have joined national, state, county, and local government agencies to assist under-resourced people attend to some of their needs as measures in improving the quality of their lives. Although there are many resources available, statistics show that the under-resourced clients of these organizations are not using all the resources available to them. One major factor is that applications for these resources are available on the Internet, and under-resourced heads of household do not know how to use a computer to access …

Family And Child Development Education For Harrisonburg Adolescents, Mollie M. Moran, Jennifer E. Corser, Julia M. Glauber

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The pregnancy rate among 15- to 17-year-old women in Harrisonburg is double Virginia's state rate (Townsend, 2008). While meeting administers and guidance counselors of Harrisonburg High School we learned that Harrisonburg High School views this issue as one that cannot be addressed by teaching abstinence in their public school. They have found that because of cultural beliefs, abstinence is not an effective tool for preventing teenage pregnancy. Instead, HHS teaches their students about safe sexual practices and how to have a healthy pregnancy in the event they were to become pregnant. The high school offers a class called “Child and …

Intuitive Thought And Consumer Decision Making, Morgan M. Moore May 2015

Intuitive Thought And Consumer Decision Making, Morgan M. Moore

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Anytime the human mind makes a decision, intuitive thought has played a hidden role. There is more to consumer decision making than just logical, slow cognition. Exploring the intuitive mind through the works of Johnathan Haidt and Daniel Kahneman helps researchers understand the roles and origins of intuition. Proof of the presence and power of intuitive thought in cognitive processes is offered. A subset of the intuitive mind, termed the righteous mind by Haidt, is shown to be responsible for moral intuition. As the role of intuitive thought in consumer decision making is considered, numerous marketing applications are applied. Whether …
