A Study To Assess The Efficacy Of Implementing An In-Season Psychological Skills Training Program With Elite Level Cyclists, Christopher L. Curan

Theses

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of developing and implementing an in-season Psychological Skills Training (PST) program to increase performance, mood state, and self-efficacy mental skills for elite cyclists. Additionally, the goal of the study was to develop a success profile for elite cyclists after completing a PST program. A collegiate cycling team formed the treatment group (N=25), who received a 12-week in-season PST program, and a similar demographical control group (N=28) received no mental skills training. Sports psychology instruments using pre- and posttest included the Sports Emotional Reaction Profile (SERP), Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ASCI-28). …

Despite these significant benefits, a majority of Americans do not meet current physical activity guidelines. Health care providers, especially nurses, play a vital role in physical activity promotion. Over the past several decades, exercise and physical activity guidelines have evolved from a focus on structured, vigorous exercise to a focus on moderate-intensity “lifestyle” physical activity. The author updates nurses on physical activity guidelines and provides tips for promoting physical activity, with a focus on lifestyle activities such as walking to work. This article …

Improved Oncolytic Virotherapy By Increasing Virus Spread Within Tumors., Stephen Wechman Aug 2015

Improved Oncolytic Virotherapy By Increasing Virus Spread Within Tumors., Stephen Wechman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oncolytic adenoviruses (Ads) have great therapeutic potential for lung cancer. Cancer selective E1b-deleted Ads are safe, however their efficacy remains limited clinically. To improve E1b-deleted Ads, Adhz60 was selected for greater anti-cancer efficacy by a process called bioselection, producing AdUV. AdUV preferentially lysed A549 and H1299 lung cancer cells more effectively than both the cancer selective Adhz60 and non-selective Ad5. AdUV induced greater LC3-II expression, relative to LC3-I, indicating that AdUV (30.9-fold) induced autophagy more effectively than Ad5 (12.2-fold) and Adhz60 (7.8-fold) in A549 cells. Mice treated with AdUV had significantly smaller tumors (p-value < 0.001) and prolonged survival (p-value = 0.0005) than mice treated with the negative control AdGFP. These results suggest that AdUV efficiently lyses lung cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.

The Effect Of Protandim Supplementation On Oxidative Damage And Athletic Performance., Seteena Leigh Ueberschlag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A double-blind placebo-controlled trial determined the long term effects of Protandim® supplementation on 5-km running performance, as well as on acute and long-term oxidative damage assessed by serum lipid peroxides (Thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances: TBARS). Thirty-eight subjects were placed into one of two groups: an experimental (675 mg/day Protandim®) or control group (675 mg/day corn starch). 5-km runs were performed at baseline and 88 (SD 4) days post-supplementation with samples taken immediately pre- and 10-min post 5-km run, as well as at rest ∼30 and ∼60 days during the supplementation period. There was ~25% week-to-week coefficient of variation of TBARS at …

Network Participation In Public Health : The Development Of Instruments And Adapted Theory To Predict Stakeholder Participation In A Public Health Network., David Johnson Aug 2015

Network Participation In Public Health : The Development Of Instruments And Adapted Theory To Predict Stakeholder Participation In A Public Health Network., David Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Participation in public health networks is important to achieve the goals of public health. This dissertation addresses a common problem in public health management—of how to measure support and predict participation by individuals and organizations in network level collaboratives—through testing an adapted theory producing a newly developed instrument. Purpose: Community health collaboratives have grown in popularity and in funding opportunities in the past couple decades, but they notoriously fail to achieve measureable results. By adapting theory and relevant instruments to a specific public health network context, factors that enable and inhibit participation are identified. Method: A prospective, theory-driven, sequential …

Mathematical Studies Of The Glucose-Insulin Regulatory System Models., Minghu Wang Aug 2015

Mathematical Studies Of The Glucose-Insulin Regulatory System Models., Minghu Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three dynamic models are proposed to study the mechanism of glucose-insulin regulatory system and the possible causes of diabetes mellitus. The progression of diabetes comes along with the apoptosis of pancreatic beta-cells. A dynamical system model is formulated based on physiology and studied by geometric singular perturbation theory. The analytical studies reveal rich analytical features, such as persistence of solutions, Hopf bifurcation and backward bifurcation, while numerical studies successfully fit available longitudinal T2DM data of Pima Indian tribe. These studies together not only validate our model, but also point out key intrinsic factors leading to the development of T2DM. We …

Testing The Chronic Care Model For Depression In Homebound Older Adults., Brittney Rose Getz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Homebound older adults are a unique population of older adults with many chronic illnesses and complex care needs (Qui et al., 2010). Depression is highly prevalent in homebound older adults (Qui et al., 2010). Many Chronic Care Models (CCMs) have been developed to provide a better system of care to those with chronic health conditions (Bodenheimer, Wagner, & Grumbach, 2002; Wagner et al., 2001; Wagner, Austin, & Von Korff, 1996a, 1996b). The Chronic Care Model for Depressed Homebound Older Adults is a model that was specifically designed for the depressed homebound elderly. It addresses many areas for improvement of care …

The second study compared the effect of melengestrol acetate (MGA) -PG and 14-d controlled internal drug release (CIDR) -PG estrus synchronization protocols on estrus response and pregnancy rates of 311 d old heifers. Final pregnancy rate was similar between CIDR and MGA treatment groups. The objective …

Dietary Strategies For Mitigation Of Methane Production By Growing And Finishing Cattle, Anna C. Pesta Aug 2015

Dietary Strategies For Mitigation Of Methane Production By Growing And Finishing Cattle, Anna C. Pesta

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Interest in reducing methane (CH4) emissions by cattle has increased recently. Loss of feed energy as CH4 represents both an environmental concern and an energetic loss to the animal. Manipulation of dietary composition has proven to be an effective mitigation strategy. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of several dietary characteristics on CH4 production in growing and finishing cattle, and to develop a novel, non-invasive method for quantifying emissions from animals in a production setting. Short-term gaseous emissions of CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) were measured and the CH4:CO2 …

A Dual Function Of White Coloration In A Nocturnal Spider Dolomedes Raptor (Araneae: Pisauridae), Tai-Shen Lin, Shichang Zhang, Chen-Pan Liao, Eileen A. Hebets, I-Min Tso

Eileen Hebets Publications

Nocturnal animals frequently possess seemingly conspicuous color patterns that can function in a variety of ways (e.g. prey attraction, camouflage, predator avoidance, etc.). The use of color patterns in intraspecific signaling, especially reproductive activities, in nocturnal animals has received relatively little attention. This study tested for a dual function of color in the nocturnal fishing spider, Dolomedes raptor (Araneae: Pisauridae), whose males develop dimorphic white stripes at sexual maturation. We tested for a role in foraging as well as mate assessment. First, quantifications of the natural variation of male stripes indicated a correlation between stripe area and male body size …

Links Between Foraging Strategies, Feeding Competition, And Female Agonistic Relationships In Wild Western Gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla), Jessica Lee Lodwick Aug 2015

Links Between Foraging Strategies, Feeding Competition, And Female Agonistic Relationships In Wild Western Gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla), Jessica Lee Lodwick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In wild primates, feeding competition is believed to influence female social relationships, patterns of dispersal, energy gain, and reproductive success. When high– quality foods are distributed in monopolizable patches, high– ranking females can use aggression to exclude low– ranking females from patches, thereby consistently gaining more food. Rank– related differences in female energy gain are expected to arise, and selection for aggression is thought to lead to unidirectional female agonistic relationships and a linear dominance hierarchy. The social and energetic effects of within– group contest competition have been extensively documented in small– bodied monkeys living in cohesive groups. However, the …

The Ills Of Empire: Managing Health And Populations Across The British Atlantic World, 1707-1834, Tristan Tomlinson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explores the development during the long eighteenth century of modern approaches to governing society through the management of the health and conduct of laboring populations: particularly slaves, sailors, soldiers, and the urban poor. Scholars generally study these groups separately. I argue, however, that their roles as providers of crucial, often coerced labor linked them in the eyes of social and political authorities. Further, members of these populations had in common poverty, heavy labor, and difficult living and working conditions, all of which made them seem especially and similarly vulnerable to health threats. Authorities--whether government officials, naval officers, or …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Malathion On Adaptive Plasticity Of Pseudacris Sierra, Michael Jonathan Maples Aug 2015

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Malathion On Adaptive Plasticity Of Pseudacris Sierra, Michael Jonathan Maples

Master's Theses

This thesis is composed of two chapters. Chapter one reviews what is known about adaptive plasticity in response to predators, describes the physiological systems involved in such plasticity, and outlines the evolutionary consequences of adaptive plasticity. Chapter two describes a scientific experiment that investigates how malathion may impact adaptive plasticity in the Sierran Treefrog, Pseudacris sierra. Anuran tadpoles suffer high mortality rates due to predation. In response to strong selective forces relating to these high predation rates, tadpoles evolved the ability to adaptively respond to predators through morphological and behavioral plasticity. The morphological and behavioral responses are varied and depend …

Saudi Medical Journal

Hernias are routine general surgical problems that may present in any age group, regardless of the patient’s socioeconomic status. We present a rare case of a complicated ventral hernia leading to short bowel. This is an unusual case and is very rarely reported in the literature. This current case report describes a 54-year-old gentleman who presented to the hospital with a giant strangulated ventral hernia causing massive bowel ischemia and resulting in a short bowel. The literature on large abdominal wall hernias leading to short bowel is reviewed, and a discussion on short bowel syndrome is also presented.

Parent-specific gene expression (PSGE) is little known outside of mammals and plants. PSGE occurs when the expression level of a gene depends on whether an allele was inherited from the mother or the father. Kin selection theory predicts that there should be extensive PSGE in social insects because social insect parents can gain inclusive fitness benefits by silencing parental alleles in female offspring. We searched for evidence of PSGE in honey bees using transcriptomes from reciprocal crosses between European and Africanized strains. We found 46 transcripts with significant parent-of-origin effects on gene expression, many of which overexpressed the maternal allele. …

Mathematical Properties That Influence Least Significant Change Of Body Composition And Bone Mineral Density Measured By Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, Nadia Marie Ghassan Najm

All Theses

Introduction: Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans are the gold standard method for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) calculations for the assessment and measurement of bone health. More recently, DXA scans have become the common method for body composition assessments among clinicians and researchers alike, particularly for its ability to separate soft tissue into and lean mass. This study was designed to calculate the percent coefficient variation (%CV) to determine the least significant change (LSC), or the variability considered significant when measuring BMD, fat mass, and lean mass with a DXA scan. Methods: Thirty-six female and 6 male, aged 50.07 …
