Economic And Environmental Modeling Of An Agricultural Watershed In The Mississippi Delta: Crop Selection Using An Lp Model And Water Quality Impacts Of Bioenergy Crops Using The Annagnps Model, Rodney Eugene Wright

Student Theses and Dissertations

The conventional ethanol mandates set forth by the renewable fuel standards in the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 have resulted in an increased demand for corn. The requirement has translated into a 20% increase in corn hectares in the U.S, based on the three-year period prior to 2005 to the most recent three-year period, 2012-2014. This economic study optimized crop selection on a case study farm in the Arkansas Delta with the Purdue Crop/Linear Programming model. The cropping optimization was performed at six corn price levels consisting of near the loan rate, pre-EISA, post-EISA low, post-EISA average, …

The Passion To Lead – Pe Teachers Leading A Whole School Approach Can Optimise The Child’S Health Development., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

As HPE advocates we strive to provide opportunities for what is in the best interest of the child within the expectations of the curriculum framework, in class time and for action beyond the classroom. To provide the child with a holistic health experience we cannot operate alone. (H)PE teachers can use their passion to lead and manage, so that a whole school approach can optimise the child’s health development. Continuing on from the keynote, common HPE implementation barriers are explored and possible strategies discussed.

Although Child Poverty Declined In 2014, Persistent Racial And Ethnic Disadvantages Remain, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Andrew P. Schaefer, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

Poverty data from the American Community Survey were released on September 17, 2015, allowing a detailed examination of poverty in 2014 across the United States. In this brief, authors Beth Mattingly, Andrew Schaefer, and Jessica Carson discuss changes in child poverty between 2013 and 2014 and since 2009, just after the Great Recession ended. They report that in 2014, 21.7 percent of children were poor, representing a modest, but statistically significant decline since 2013 (by 0.6 percentage point), but still 1.7 percentage points higher than in 2009. Though cities and rural places remain home to the highest rates of child …

Viva La Ova - The Journey!/Jamiyah Hassan, Jamiyah Hassan

Archival Material (2010s)

The journey of a woman from the womb to the tomb starts with the little ova. The challenges of pregnancy and its potential complications can convert a naturally physiological event to something more deadly. A woman who dies during pregnancy and delivery is a tragedy that we want to avoid. For over five decades Malaysia has improved the obstetric services and maternal mortality has reduced significantly. Family planning and effective contraception will be the much needed strategy to achieve maternal mortality comparable to the more developed world.

Childhood Feeding Practices And Parenting Styles In Hispanics, Kasi Spinelli Sep 2015

Childhood Feeding Practices And Parenting Styles In Hispanics, Kasi Spinelli

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to detect an ethnic difference in Hispanic and feeding practices in early childhood. It is further hypothesized that there will be a relationship between parenting styles and feeding practices. 24 Rowan graduate students completed a survey, the Toddler Feeding questionnaire by Chaidez & Kaiser (2011). The items on the survey were divided into questions that asked about parenting styles, feeding practices, environmental factors, and demographics. The ethnicity was analyzed by using a one-way ANOVA (within) to discover any associations between the parenting styles and feeding practices items on the survey. There was not a …

Younginer, Alexandria Orloski, Heather A. Hamtil, Claudia Ganter, Yasmeen P. Bruton, Amber E. Vaughn, Jennifer O. Fisher

Faculty Publications

Background: Snacking contributes to excessive energy intakes in children. Yet factors shaping child snacking are virtually unstudied. This study examines food parenting practices specific to child snacking among low-income caregivers. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in English or Spanish with 60 low-income caregivers of preschool-aged children (18 non-Hispanic white, 22 African American/Black, 20 Hispanic; 92% mothers). A structured interview guide was used to solicit caregivers' definitions of snacking and strategies they use to decide what, when and how much snack their child eats. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed using an iterative theory-based and grounded approach. A conceptual model …

A Forward Genetic Screen Identifies Factors Associated With Fever Pathogenesis In Plasmodium Falciparum, Phaedra J. Thomas Sep 2015

A Forward Genetic Screen Identifies Factors Associated With Fever Pathogenesis In Plasmodium Falciparum, Phaedra J. Thomas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Infectious diseases that spread from person-to-person and continent-to-continent are a cause for concern for any health entity. One such disease is malaria, a mosquito-borne infection instigated by the protozoan parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. Hundreds of millions of people are affected annually and it is responsible for nearly 1 million deaths. It is the most fatal species causing malaria and proliferates in human red blood cells with a life cycle occurring every 48 hours. At this time, the parasite’s late stage form or schizont bursts from the erythrocyte releasing immune-inducing particles and infective forms (merozoites) into the bloodstream. The merozoites go …

A Community Of Isolation: An Ethnographic Examination Of Mothering In Poverty And Its Impact On Food Security In Pinellas County, Florida, Amanda M. Terry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to document the lived experience of mothering in poverty and the unique challenges the role of mother presents to maintaining food security. Millions of households in the United States are struggling to put food on the table, a problem made worse by the current economic recession and high food prices. Among them, households with children and specifically, single mothers, report the highest prevalence of food insecurity. While Federal food assistance programs are available to help alleviate this issue, the continued problem of hunger is a very real and pervasive concern for millions of American …

The Impact Of Lingual Resistance Training In Two Individuals With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Case Series, Raele Donetha Robison Sep 2015

The Impact Of Lingual Resistance Training In Two Individuals With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Case Series, Raele Donetha Robison

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal and progressive disease characterized by the deterioration of motor neurons within the body. This degeneration leads to bulbar dysfunction in the form of an impaired ability to communicate and swallow. Currently, bulbar dysfunction is treated via compensatory methods aimed at maximizing comfort and safety that include environmental adaptations, augmentative and assistive communication and gastrostomy tube placement to replace speech and oral feeding. The role of active intervention is controversial in this patient population and no investigations have examined the potential role lingual exercise might play in ALS bulbar management. The purpose of …

The Impact Of A Mindfulness Based Program On Perceived Stress, Anxiety, Depression And Sleep Of Incarcerated Women, Ginette G. Ferszt, Robin J. Miller, Joyce E. Hickey, Fleet Maull, Kate Crisp

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Incarcerated women enter the prison setting with remarkable histories of trauma, mental health and substance abuse issues. Given the stress of incarceration and separation from their children, families, and significant others, it is not surprising that many women experience increased anxiety, depression, and problems with sleep. Due to these negative outcomes, it is imperative to find efficient non-pharmacological interventions. This pilot study examined the impact of a 12-week mindfulness based program on the stress, anxiety, depression and sleep of women with a total of 33 completing the study. In one group, women’s perceived stress, anxiety and depression were all significantly …

Factors Associated With Early Growth In Egyptian Infants: Implications For Addressing The Dual Burden Of Malnutrition., Justine A Kavle, Valerie L Flax, Ali Abdelmegeid, Farouk Salah, Seham Hafez, Magda Ramzy, Doaa Hamed, Gulsen Saleh, Rae Galloway

Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications

Optimal nutrition is critical to the attainment of healthy growth, human capital and sustainable development. In Egypt, infants and young children face overlapping forms of malnutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies, stunting and overweight. Yet, in this setting, little is known about the factors associated with growth during the first year of life. A rise in stunting in Lower Egypt from 2005 to 2008 prompted this implementation research study, which followed a longitudinal cohort of infants from birth to 1 year of age within the context of a USAID-funded maternal and child health integrated programme. We sought to determine if growth patterns …
