Why Brilliant People Believe Nonsense: A Practical Text For Critical And Creative Thinking, J. Steve Miller, Cherie K. Miller
2015 Faculty Bookshelf
The information explosion has made us information rich, but wisdom poor. Yet, to succeed in business and in life, we must distinguish accurate from bogus sources, and draw valid conclusions from mounds of data. This book, written for a general adult audience as well as students, takes a new look at critical thinking in the information age, helping readers to not only see through nonsense, but to create a better future with innovative thinking.
Readers should see the practicality of enhancing skills that make them more innovative and employable, especially in a day when companies increasingly seek original thinkers, global …

Fine-Scale Monitoring Of Running Buffalo Clover (Trifolium Stoloniferum) Restoration Populations At Taylor Fork Ecological Area, Chelsea L. Perkins
Fine-Scale Monitoring Of Running Buffalo Clover (Trifolium Stoloniferum) Restoration Populations At Taylor Fork Ecological Area, Chelsea L. Perkins
Honors Theses
Running buffalo clover (Trifolium stoloniferum Muhl. ex A. Eaton) is a species of clover that is federally listed as endangered. Trifolium stoloniferum requires mesic habitats with partially filtered light and will be outcompeted without periodic disturbance, such as grazing, mowing, or trampling. The purpose of this study was to understand rates of flowering and clonal reproduction associated with different growth stages of T. stoloniferum. During this study I visited 6 restoration sites of T. stoloniferum once each week from April to October, marking new individuals with a unique numbered metal tag and assessing the growth stage of individuals. …

Background: This systematic review assessed the effectiveness and safety of pharmacotherapy and combined interventions for reducing vaccine injection pain in individuals across the lifespan. Design/Methods: Electronic databases were searched for relevant randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials. Self-reported pain and fear as well as observer-rated distress were critically important outcomes. Data were combined using standardized mean difference (SMD) or relative risk with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Fifty-five studies that examined breastfeeding (which combines sweet-tasting solution, holding, and sucking), topical anesthetics, sweet-tasting solutions (sucrose, glucose), vapocoolants, oral analgesics, and combination of 2 versus 1 intervention were included. The following results report …

Background: This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of physical and procedural interventions for reducing pain and related outcomes during vaccination. Design/Methods: Databases were searched using a broad search strategy to identify relevant randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials. Data were extracted according to procedure phase (preprocedure, acute, recovery, and combinations of these) and pooled using established methods. Results: A total of 31 studies were included. Acute infant distress was diminished during intramuscular injection without aspiration (n=313): standardized mean difference (SMD) -0.82 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.18, -0.46). Injecting the most painful vaccine last during vaccinations reduced acute infant distress (n=196): SMD …

Mathematical Modeling And Simulations Of The Pathophysiology Of Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus, Frank K. Nani, Mingxian Jin
Mathematical Modeling And Simulations Of The Pathophysiology Of Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus, Frank K. Nani, Mingxian Jin
Math and Computer Science Faculty Working Papers
The pathophysiology of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is modelled using a coupled system of non-linear deterministic differential equations. An attempt is made to construct to a clinically plausible mathematical model that incorporates the homeostasis associated with endocrinological regulation of glucose and glycogen levels in the human body, by the hormones, insulin and glucagon. The model variables include the concentrations of glucose in the venous blood plasma, the concentration of glycogen in the liver/tissues, the concentration of the hormone glucagon, and the concentration of insulin in the venous blood plasma. The physiological interactions between the model parameters are depicted by …

The final project for the Rural Civic Action Project is to create a poster that includes the Community Capital Mapping activity (CCMA; Keith & Kinsey, 2013). The Community Capital Maps provide an opportunity to evaluate the impact of the projects from the participants’ perspective. Fellows should include 2 maps on their poster: the map that was created through facilitating the CCMA, the map created by the fellows evaluating the impact of their service project (the work the fellows are doing in the schools). Also included on the poster is a narrative describing the maps.

Aims
To investigate the renal effects of fitness in people with diabetes with mild renal dysfunction.
Methods
The effect of a 12-week exercise programme on estimated GFR in 128 people with diabetes was evaluated.
Results
All cardiometabolic variables improved after 12 weeks of supervised exercise. Although there was a modest 3.9% increase in estimated GFR from baseline in the 128 people who completed the study, those with baseline chronic kidney disease stages 2 and 3 were found to have significant (6 and 12%, respectively; p < 0.01) improvements in post-exercise estimated GFR. Moreover, 42% of the people with chronic kidney disease stage 3 improved to chronic kidney disease stage 2 after the intervention.
Conclusion
Short-term exercise improves renal function in those with more moderate baseline chronic kidney disease. …

Women With Disabilities: Reproductive Care And Women’S Health, Stephanie Stockburger, Hatim A. Omar
Women With Disabilities: Reproductive Care And Women’S Health, Stephanie Stockburger, Hatim A. Omar
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Children, adolescents, and women with disabilities experience the same sexual development, pubertal changes, concerns, and desire to reproduce as their typically developing counterparts. However, society has tended to stigmatize women with disabilities as “asexual” and ignore this aspect of their health care. These women are less likely to receive gynecological exams, contraception, and evaluation of sexual dysfunction. Unfortunately, having a disability places women at risk for sexual exploitation and abuse as well as sexually transmitted infections. Therefore, reproductive health care for these women is imperative. A number of barriers to receiving reproductive care exist. However, with proper education and knowledge …

Preventing And Reducing Falls In Assisted Living Facilities: An Educational Intervention, Raquel F. Ramos, Jennifer A. Borcich, Taylor S. Wong
Student Research Posters
As the number of older adults continues to rise, falling in older adults has become a national health care issue. Many older adults who fall reside in assisted living facilities. Every time a fall incident occurs, first responders are called, utilizing a significant amount of first responder’s time and resources. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to implement a fall prevention program for residents of an assisted living facility (ALF) to reduce fall risk and fall-related calls to the local fire department. The project consisted of a four-week course given once weekly for 60 minutes to residents at an …

Community Health Workers: Health System Integration, Financing Opportunities, And The Evolving Role Of The Community Health Worker In A Post-Health Reform Landsacape, Mary-Beth Malcarney, Patricia Pittman, Leo Quigley, Naomi Seiler, Katie B. Horton
Health Workforce Research Center Publications
Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been gaining attention from policymakers because of their unique role in addressing health disparities and socioeconomic drivers of disease, and because of their potential integration into the health care delivery system. To date, there has been limited research specifically describing the variation in CHWs’ roles and relationships, and how that variation relates to management, to financing, to health system integration, and to the competencies CHWs should have in different contexts.
The purpose of this report is to better understand the varied landscape; to offer categories of analysis that may help inform policy, management, and research; …

Dietary Almonds Increase Serum Hdl Cholesterol In Coronary Artery Disease Patients In A Randomized Controlled Trial., Humaira Jamshed, Fateh Ali Tipoo Sultan, Romaina Iqbal, Anwar Gilani
Section of Cardiology
Background: More than one-half of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients have low HDL cholesterol despite having well-managed LDL cholesterol. Almond supplementation has not been shown to elevate circulating HDL cholesterol concentrations in clinical trials, perhaps because the baseline HDL cholesterol of trial subjects was not low.
Objective: This clinical trial was designed to test the effect of almond supplementation on low HDL cholesterol in CAD patients.
Methods: A total of 150 CAD patients (50 per group), with serum LDL cholesterol ≤100 mg/dL and HDL cholesterol ≤40 mg/dL in men and ≤50 mg/dL in women, were recruited from the Aga Khan …

Isoniazid Induced Motor-Dominant Neuropathy, Rabeeya Arsalan, Saniya Sabzwari
Department of Family Medicine
Isoniazid though a very effective treatment for tuberculosis can cause severe motor-dominant neuropathy which can be reversible with pyridoxine supplementation. A 45-year-old female diagnosed with psoas abscess, culture positive for mycobacterium tuberculosis, was started on anti- tuberculous treatment with four drugs, including isoniazid at a dose of 5 mg/kg/day. Three months later she developed severe motor weakness of lower limbs with loss of ankle and knee reflexes. She was treated with vitamin B6 injections and isoniazid treatment was continued. Her motor weakness gradually improved in a few months, but mild sensory impairment persisted even after two years. There is need …
