Multi-Scale Environmental Filters And Niche Partitioning Govern The Distributions Of Riparian Vegetation Guilds, Nate Hough-Snee, Brian G. Laub, David M. Merritt, Arin Lexine Long, Lloyd L. Nackley, Brett B. Roper, Joseph Michael Wheaton Oct 2015

Multi-Scale Environmental Filters And Niche Partitioning Govern The Distributions Of Riparian Vegetation Guilds, Nate Hough-Snee, Brian G. Laub, David M. Merritt, Arin Lexine Long, Lloyd L. Nackley, Brett B. Roper, Joseph Michael Wheaton

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Across landscapes, riparian plant communities assemble under varying levels of disturbance, environmental stress, and resource availability, leading to the development of distinct riparian life-history guilds over evolutionary timescales. Identifying the environmental filters that exert selective pressures on specific riparian vegetation guilds is a critical step in setting baseline expectations for how riparian vegetation may respond to environmental conditions anticipated under future global change scenarios. In this study, we ask: (1) What riparian plant guilds exist across the interior Columbia and upper Missouri River basins? (2) What environmental filters shape riparian guild distributions? (3) How does resource partitioning among guilds influence …

Child Abuse And Its Effects On The Social-Emotional Behavior Of Elementary School Students, Natalie Heredia Oct 2015

Child Abuse And Its Effects On The Social-Emotional Behavior Of Elementary School Students, Natalie Heredia

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Lack of teacher knowledge on child abuse has resulted in lower percentage of child abuse cases being reported. Elementary school students who have been abused show behaviors such as aggression, disruptive behaviors, poor emotions, and lack of social relationships affecting their social-emotional development. Yet, some teachers see these signs as simple misbehavior. Child abuse education program is an essential component in preparing current and future teachers. Mandatory training and extra resources with an open mind to prevent and stop child abuse can make a difference in a child’s development in many ways.

Integrating Gardening As A Tool To Teach The Concept Of Sustainability To Elementary School Students, Hannah Cobb, Madisen Hasenauer Oct 2015

Integrating Gardening As A Tool To Teach The Concept Of Sustainability To Elementary School Students, Hannah Cobb, Madisen Hasenauer

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s society. Society as a whole benefits from having an environmentally conscious citizen who can make an informed impact on social issues involving natural resources. As future educators, it is our responsibility to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to become an active part of repairing our planet. Research suggests that school gardens can be a powerful tool in promoting outdoor education, encouraging positive peer relationships, and building strong communities, while teaching sustainability concepts. I propose teachers who receive school support, collaborate with committed volunteers, and acquire access to the …

The Crayfish Snakes Of North America, Jake A. Pruett

Bakerman Student Research Awards

One of the greatest feats of evolutionary innovation, the amniotic egg, allowed vertebrate organisms more freedom from the aquatic environment by being able to place their eggs on land. Amniotes became a diverse group occupying a myriad of habitats around the globe. Over time, there have been multiple independent invasions of aquatic systems by terrestrial amniotes from a variety of taxa. Reptiles (the historically recognized group) are a diverse group of organisms with aquatic representative taxa on every continent except Antarctica. Within reptiles, the ophidia (snakes) are found all across the globe and in most aquatic habitats. There have been …

Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Interrtuptus) Use Of The Intertidal Zone At A Santa Catalina Island Mpa In Southern California, Sean C. Windell Oct 2015

Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Interrtuptus) Use Of The Intertidal Zone At A Santa Catalina Island Mpa In Southern California, Sean C. Windell

SNS Master's Theses

This study investigated spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) use of the intertidal habitat as an important and underappreciated foraging ground during the reproductive season, and the spatial scales over which lobsters interacted with this habitat at two locations off Santa Catalina Island, California. At Bird Rock and Big Fisherman Cove, there were significantly higher densities of lobsters within the intertidal zone at night compared to the adjacent subtidal zone, as well as a higher density of reproductively active (eggcarrying) females, suggesting the non-trivial use of this habitat. Spiny lobster density, size, sex ratio (in favor of females), and reproductive condition were …

Nutrition And Education In An Urbanizing Nation, Molly Pritz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Child malnutrition is a growing public health issue in Nepal, particularly in urban areas. Not eating enough, or not eating enough of healthy foods, can have life-long implications on development and cognitive ability. Because of its relevance to development within the country, many donor organizations and non-governmental organizations are working to promote child nutrition education programs. The purpose of this research is to investigate the implementation and structure of urban child nutrition educational programs involving treatment and prevention in Kathmandu, Nepal. Through qualitative interviews and field observations with three primary organizations, this research analyzes the patterns and disconnects between various …

The Examination Of Enrichment Using Space And Food For African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana) At The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Charlotte Hacker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Concern for elephant welfare in zoological facilities has prompted a number of exhibit and management modifications, including those involving enrichment. Knowledge of how these changes impact measures of health and wellbeing, such as elephant movement and behavior, is crucial as the effects of multiple enrichment types and their interactions are largely understudied. The present study used observations and GPS unit collected data to determine the effects of space and food on the walking distance and behavior of thirteen African elephants, whose dominance structure was ascertained by the handlers at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (SDZSP). This facility has two …
