A Survey Of The Kinetic Monte Carlo Algorithm As Applied To A Multicellular System, Michael Richard Laughlin Dec 2015

A Survey Of The Kinetic Monte Carlo Algorithm As Applied To A Multicellular System, Michael Richard Laughlin

Theses and Dissertations

We explore the origins and implementation of the Kinetic Monte Carlo method on a system of cells suspended in a liquid media. The situation presented herein has applications in the emerging field of biofabrication, which may have lasting impacts in medical science. The theory behind the method is explained in detail, starting with its emergence in the 1960s, and two major improvements to the scaling of the method are presented, along with a restriction to a special case. Finally, we give the results of several simulations.

Surface Modification Of Nanodiamond And Its Incorporation In Nanodiamond/Peek Nanocomposites, Zahidul Wahab Dec 2015

Surface Modification Of Nanodiamond And Its Incorporation In Nanodiamond/Peek Nanocomposites, Zahidul Wahab

Theses and Dissertations

The continued miniaturization of electronic device components requires new lightweight polymers with high thermal stability, high thermal conductivity, low electrical conductivity, and low dielectric constant. Composites of nanodiamond (ND) and poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) are candidates for these applications due their unique combination of properties. The objectives of this research are to explore new routes for surface functionalization of nanodiamond (ND), develop methods for maximizing dispersion of ND as a nano-scale filler in PEEK, and characterize the effect of dispersed ND on the mechanical, thermal and dielectric properties of ND/PEEK composites. Initial attempts to disperse different kinds of commercially available, …

Global Methylation Of Dna Among Spartina Alterniflora Clones Differing In Age At North Inlet, Sc, Trenton Agrelius Dec 2015

Global Methylation Of Dna Among Spartina Alterniflora Clones Differing In Age At North Inlet, Sc, Trenton Agrelius

Theses and Dissertations

“Brown marsh” or “sudden marsh dieback” refers to the rapid death of patches varying in size of Spartina alterniflora. In 2000 following a 100-year record drought, approximately 8,000 hectares of S. alterniflora died along the Louisiana coast, which prompted Louisiana Governor Foster to declare a state of emergency. Other cases have been documented at North Inlet, SC as well as various other marshes along the southeastern United States. Currently, there is much dispute regarding the cause of “sudden marsh dieback” but environmental stress is one of the acknowledged constants across sites. We hypothesized an alternative mechanism in which methylation of …

Antitrust Arbitration And Merger Approval, Mark A. Lemley, Christopher R. Leslie Dec 2015

Antitrust Arbitration And Merger Approval, Mark A. Lemley, Christopher R. Leslie

Northwestern University Law Review

In a string of recent opinions, the Supreme Court has made it harder for consumers to avoid arbitration clauses, even when businesses strategically insert provisions in them that effectively prevent consumers from being able to bring any claim in any forum.

Arbitration differs from litigation in ways that harm the interests of consumer antitrust plaintiffs. For example, arbitration limits discovery and has no meaningful appeals process. Furthermore, defendants use the terms in arbitration clauses to prevent class actions and to undercut the pro-plaintiff features of antitrust law, including mandatory treble damages, meaningful injunctive relief, recovery of attorneys’ fees, and a …

The Use And Misuse Of Patent Licenses, Jonathan S. Masur Dec 2015

The Use And Misuse Of Patent Licenses, Jonathan S. Masur

Northwestern University Law Review

Patents are becoming an increasingly large business with ever greater resources devoted to litigation and enforcement. At the center of that business lie the damages that courts award at trial and the ways in which courts go about calculating those damages. Yet the legal standards meant to govern patent damages are notoriously ambiguous and unhelpful. In the face of these difficulties, courts have sought a market mechanism that would aid them in calculating patent damages. The solution they have seized upon is to use existing licenses, typically granted by the plaintiff to third parties, as evidence of the proper measure …

Predicting Volunteer Motives Among University Faculty And Staff: A Functional Approach, Richard J. Harnish, K. Robert Bridges Dec 2015

Predicting Volunteer Motives Among University Faculty And Staff: A Functional Approach, Richard J. Harnish, K. Robert Bridges

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

Anchor institutions tend to be non-profit organizations that are spatially immobile and are an economic engine for their communities. Because of pressures on institutions of higher education to generate new revenue, it may be more difficult for such institutions to meet the criteria or maintain their status as an anchor institution. In this article, we argue that volunteerism may be one means to strengthen partnerships in the community thereby assisting the university or college in their attempts to meet the criteria or maintain their status as an anchor institution. Volunteerism is an other-oriented prosocial behavior in which one’s self is …

Naphthenic acids (NAs) are among the most toxic organic pollutants present in oil sands process waters (OSPW) and enter marine and freshwater environments through natural and anthropogenic sources. We investigated the effects of the acid extractable organic (AEO) fraction of OSPW and individual surrogate NAs, on maximum photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (FV/FM) and cell growth in Emiliania huxleyi and Chlorella vulgaris as representative marine and freshwater phytoplankton. Whilst FV/FM in E. huxleyi and C. vulgaris was not inhibited by AEO, exposure to two surrogate NAs: (4'-n-butylphenyl)-4-butanoic acid (n-BPBA) and (4'-tert-butylphenyl)-4-butanoic acid (tert-BPBA), caused complete inhibition of FV/FM in …

Why are some teams perennial darlings of sports journalists while other talented squads get overlooked? Each week during the NCAA basketball season, the Associated Press releases a ranked poll of the top 25 teams. By comparing the preseason and postseason rankings, we construct a measure of how much sports journalists who respond to the poll overrate (or underrate) college teams relative to their actual performance. Using this metric for the 115 NCAA schools that have appeared at least once in the opening or final AP poll in the last 25 years, we examine a range of institutional characteristics that may …

Sintesis Prekursor Senyawa Beauvericin, Asam (2r)-Asetiloksiisovalerat, Rani Maharani, Taufiqqurahman Taufiqqurahman, Dina Puspitasari

Looking Beyond Culture: Building Successful Multiparty Collaboration, James R. Hemsath

Student Scholarship

The complexities of global business and the need for rapid, effective responses to problems that cross borders and span cultures demand an understanding of why transnational multiparty collaborations have failed and why they have succeeded. At the core of this work is 1) understanding the role that culture and identity play in creating a meta-identity built on the strengths of individual and organization identities and the sameness those identities represent; 2) the development of strong connectedness between the parties and 3) the creation of a shared vision of what is trying to be achieved. Ultimately the strength of the meta-identity …
