Displaying To Females May Lower Male Foraging Time And Vigilance In A Lekking Bird, Sarah A. Cowles, Robert M. Gibson Nov 2015

Displaying To Females May Lower Male Foraging Time And Vigilance In A Lekking Bird, Sarah A. Cowles, Robert M. Gibson

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Males of many species use courtship behavior to attract mates. However, by doing so males may face the associated costs of increased energetic expenditure, reduced foraging time, and elevated predation risk. We investigated the costs of display in lekking male Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus). We used lek-wide scan sampling to study how males allocated time among courtship display (‘‘dancing’’), agonism, foraging, and inactivity in relation to female numbers both within and across days. We also addressed the limited attention hypothesis and estimated visual attentiveness by videotaping 13 males and scoring head turns during these different activities. We found that the …

Photoacoustic Imaging For Ovarian Cancer Detection: System Development And Classification Algorithm, Hai Li Nov 2015

Photoacoustic Imaging For Ovarian Cancer Detection: System Development And Classification Algorithm, Hai Li

Doctoral Dissertations

Ovarian cancer is relatively rare but it has the highest mortality with a five-year survival rate of only 30% comparing with other gynecologic cancers. Most of ovarian cancers are diagnosed at late stages because of no efficacious screening techniques. So there is an urgent need to develop new imaging techniques for early stage ovarian cancer detection. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) inherently combines the merits of optical imaging and ultrasound imaging. In PAI, photoacoustic waves are generated by illuminating tissue samples with a short laser pulse. Photoacoustic waves are then measured by ultrasound transducers to reconstruct optical absorption at ultrasound resolution, which …

He_Rtland: The Violence Of Neoliberalism, Hector Sotomayor Nov 2015

He_Rtland: The Violence Of Neoliberalism, Hector Sotomayor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Perhaps, under the consciousness of today, “neoliberalism” has defined our world during the previous and current centuries more than any other socioeconomic system. But the evolution of this ideology, which initially aimed to enhance, or rather, reinvent capitalism and individual freedom, has, in essence, induced an unrecognized problem. I argue that neoliberalism is the catalyst for much of the hostility in this globalized society where tensions and poverty are casualties of individual and corporate prosperity. Because of this revelation, I argue that neoliberalism inadvertently instills violence that is both unseen and gendered. In order to formulate my argument, I introduce …

Psychological Barriers In Long Term Non-Operative Treatment Of Retroperitoneal Hematoma, Bogdan Socea, Alexandru Carȃp, Simona Bobic, Vlad Denis Constantin Nov 2015

Psychological Barriers In Long Term Non-Operative Treatment Of Retroperitoneal Hematoma, Bogdan Socea, Alexandru Carȃp, Simona Bobic, Vlad Denis Constantin

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

The retroperitoneal hematoma can have, mainly, a traumatic etiology - blunt abdominal trauma (falls from height, road accidents, aggression of any kind, etc.), or open (incised wounds, puncture, penetration or gunshot wounds). Ruptured arterial aneurysms can cause hemorrhage in the retroperitoneal space. There is also spontaneous retroperitoneal trauma in patients with chronic treatment with anticoagulant or antiaggregant drugs (1). Hemorrhage in the retroperitoneal space can be iatrogenic, after surgical, open or laparoscopic, interventions (2, 3). A particular type of retroperitoneal hematoma is the psoas muscle hematoma in patients with chronic oral anticoagulant treatment (Acenocumarol, Warfarin).

Gay-Related Smartphone Applications: Potential And Risk- A Review Of The Medical Literature In The Field, Mircea Tampa, Maria Isabela Sarbu, Simona Roxana Georgescu

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

In the setting of difficulty in finding inter-relational partners for the individuals belonging to the LGBT community, a number of mobile phone applications provided with geo-tracking system have appeared in the last years, facilitating communication between gay individuals located in the nearby geographic areas, free applications which protect the identity of the users and indicate the relative distance between users and allow the sharing of information regarding physical characteristics (age, height, weight) as well as image-type files. At present, it is worth acknowledging that all those applications addressed to the LGBT persons in search for partners are sex-specific, being polarized …

Spatial Obstacles To Shared “Crip” & Lgbtq Cultures, Nick Garcia Nov 2015

Spatial Obstacles To Shared “Crip” & Lgbtq Cultures, Nick Garcia

Breaking Silences, Demanding Crip Justice: Sex, Sexuality, and Disability

Online communities are receiving praise for providing new frontiers to marginalized populations with disabilities and LGBTQ identities. They provide unique outlets to generate media from within the community, which in turn influences broader national discussions among the public, mainstream media, and officials. Moreover, participation in online "Crip" and LGBTQ cultures present safe forums for populations to overcome geographic boundaries and control the disclosure of identities. This aspatial conception of emerging online communities is thus said to unite marginalized identities and provide meaningful representation of community members.

But while the emergence of online communities provides incredible opportunity for community formation, influence …

Leveraging Large Data Sets In Continuous Chromatography Applications: Monitoring Critical Process Parameters Using Mvda, Engin Ayturk Nov 2015

Leveraging Large Data Sets In Continuous Chromatography Applications: Monitoring Critical Process Parameters Using Mvda, Engin Ayturk

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Continuous multicolumn chromatography is gaining momentum in the industry as an enabling technology to establish continuous biomanufacturing platforms for monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins. Some companies are exploring continuous multicolumn chromatography processes as a stand-alone unit operation to improve specific productivity and/or reduce buffer consumption, while other companies are considering an integrated continuous downstream process based on continuous multicolumn chromatography.

One of the key features of continuous multicolumn chromatography is the amount of data generated during a single manufacturing batch or campaign. Traditional chromatography processes typically yield one (or a few) elution peaks per batch. Continuous chromatography processes, on the …

Monitoring And Control Of Reproducibility In Quasi-Continuous Integrated Production Processes Of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, Reiner Luttman, Sven Oliver Borchert, Jan Patrick Voss, Gesine Cornelissen

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

The development of integrated production processes include the combination and transformation of current batch oriented unit operations into linked sequential/parallel production strategies.

The presented process starts with a two-stage upstream consisting of cell cultivation and subsequent protein production, which in turn results in a five step downstream process, consisting of cell clarification via a separator, retention of cellular debris using microfiltration, concentration of the secreted product by ultrafiltration with subsequent buffer exchange through diafiltration, followed by a final purification using column chromatography.

The three main operations cell breeding, protein production and the complete downstream line are running in series, but …
