New Songdo City: A Case Study In Complexity Thinking And Ubiquitous Urban Design, Glen Kuecker Jan 2015

New Songdo City: A Case Study In Complexity Thinking And Ubiquitous Urban Design, Glen Kuecker

History Faculty publications

A new urban form has emerged amid the perfect storm of global crises: climate change, energy transition, demographic shifts (growth, aging, and urbanization), food and water insecurity, pandemics, economic stress, and ecological degradation. Known as “smart cities” or “ubiquitous cities,” this urban form is characterized by deployments of computer technologies and analytics that promise enhanced efficiencies within the urban metabolism. This paper presents South Korea’s New Songdo City as a case study in ubiquitous urban design by asking if it constitutes an opportunity within the perfect storm for an emergent, resilient urbanism. A key player in building New Songdo City …

A Framework To Improve A Nation's Competitiveness Through Quality Awards And Performance Improvement Tools, Amr Alamri Jan 2015

A Framework To Improve A Nation's Competitiveness Through Quality Awards And Performance Improvement Tools, Amr Alamri

Wayne State University Dissertations

Each country, represented by its government, aims to serve its citizens better. This is achieved by better utilization of resources and higher productivity. The ability to do so will lead to a competitive nation. Recently, countries were able to compare themselves in terms of competitiveness using international indexes and references. These references gave countries a benchmark to know where they exist compared to other nations. They help governments to understand their strengths and weaknesses within the competitiveness components. However, nations differ in the actions which are to be taken in order to improve their competitiveness. Governments establish and regulate many …

Rhetoric Of Young Non-Regular Workers In Post-Bubble Japan: A Genealogical Analysis, Noriaki Tajima Jan 2015

Rhetoric Of Young Non-Regular Workers In Post-Bubble Japan: A Genealogical Analysis, Noriaki Tajima

Wayne State University Dissertations

This work explores the development and struggle of a rhetorical subject of Japanese young non-regular workers against the recent slow economic trend. In Japan, the bubble-burst in 1991 invited a long economic recession, and companies started to adopt non-regular—low-wage, short-term and insecure—contracts from quintessential Fordist full-time seishain regular contract; yet, a large body of older seishain workers has retained this stable and affordable status. As a result, the vast majority of working forces enrolled in the job market since then has suffered from a low living standard, many on the verge of survival, while domestic mass media discourses have legitimated …

Saliency-Guided Color-To-Gray Conversion Using Region-Based Optimization, Hao Du, Shengfeng He, Bin Sheng, Lizhuang Ma, Rynson W.H. Lau Jan 2015

Saliency-Guided Color-To-Gray Conversion Using Region-Based Optimization, Hao Du, Shengfeng He, Bin Sheng, Lizhuang Ma, Rynson W.H. Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Image decolorization is a fundamental problem for many real-world applications, including monochrome printing and photograph rendering. In this paper, we propose a new color-to-gray conversion method that is based on a region-based saliency model. First, we construct a parametric color-to-gray mapping function based on global color information as well as local contrast. Second, we propose a region-based saliency model that computes visual contrast among pixel regions. Third, we minimize the salience difference between the original color image and the output grayscale image in order to preserve contrast discrimination. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method in preserving contrast in …

Glaucoma is the main cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. This disease is characterized by apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) and visual field loss that seems to be related to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Several lines of evidences have implicated the crucial role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Increased mitochondrial oxidative stress in RGC may underlie or contribute to susceptibility of RGC to apoptosis. In our work we (i) designed a rabbit model of chronic, moderately elevated IOP for studying glaucoma and (ii) demonstrated efficacy of mitochondria- Targeted antioxidant SkQ1 as a tool to reverse several traits …

Model For Consolidation Analysis Of Layered Soils Under Depth-Dependent Loading, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox Jan 2015

Model For Consolidation Analysis Of Layered Soils Under Depth-Dependent Loading, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A numerical model is presented for one-dimensional large strain consolidation of a layered soil stratum. The algorithm accounts for vertical strain, soil self-weight, conventional constitutive relationships, changing material properties during consolidation, unload/reload, time-dependent loading and boundary conditions, an externally applied hydraulic gradient, and multiple soil layers with different material properties. The model can also accommodate depth-dependent loading and variable preconsolidation stress profiles. Verification checks of the model show excellent agreement with available analytical and numerical solutions for consolidation of soils with multiple layers and depth-dependent loading. An overview of this model is presented, and a parametric study is performed to …

Protestant Funeral Processions in Southeast China: From Gangnam Style to Overt Evangelization by Chris White

Christian funeral services and processions, replete with Christian-inspired banners and signs, church bands, and conspicuous crosses, are ways in which Protestant communities in South Fujian actively promote their faith. They are also formative because the expressions of social cohesion are meant top elevate the status of the church community or family in the eyes of society at large. This article will demonstrate that the renao (socially vibrant) atmosphere of Protestant funerals reflects how such activities are important avenues …

Algorithm Selection Via Ranking, Jayadi Oentaryo Richard, Handoko Stephanus Daniel, Hoong Chuin Lau Jan 2015

Algorithm Selection Via Ranking, Jayadi Oentaryo Richard, Handoko Stephanus Daniel, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The abundance of algorithms developed to solve different problems has given rise to an important research question: How do we choose the best algorithm for a given problem? Known as algorithm selection, this issue has been prevailing in many domains, as no single algorithm can perform best on all problem instances. Traditional algorithm selection and portfolio construction methods typically treat the problem as a classification or regression task. In this paper, we present a new approach that provides a more natural treatment of algorithm selection and portfolio construction as a ranking task. Accordingly, we develop a Ranking-Based Algorithm Selection (RAS) …

Keeping The State’S Secrets: Ireland’S Road From ‘Official’ Secrets To Freedom Of Information, Michael Foley Jan 2015

Keeping The State’S Secrets: Ireland’S Road From ‘Official’ Secrets To Freedom Of Information, Michael Foley

Books/Book chapters

The introduction of the Freedom of Information act in Ireland in 1997 was a profound change for a state, a civil service and political system far more comfortable with official secrets. It has had a transformational effect on relations between citizen and the state, and has been useful for journalists despite many challenges. After its introduction it was then amended, with high costs and limitations imposed. It has subsequently been amended again to restore much of its previous powers.

Death In Every Paragraph: Journalism & The Great Irish Famine, Michael Foley Jan 2015

Death In Every Paragraph: Journalism & The Great Irish Famine, Michael Foley

Books/Book chapters

It is a truism to say that the Great Irish Famine of 1845 to 1852 brought enormous changes to Ireland. The impact of massive emigration, death and suffering of so many people changed Ireland and marks the separation from the 18th century from modernity. It was also a period of change for the press, whose journalists had to find ways to tell the story of the famine. This work, using the three Cork newspapers as its case study, argues that the methods developed in the late 1840s laid down the basis for disaster coverage to this day.

This paper reports on an exploratory study that employed Twitter and blogs as instructional Web 2.0 tools to support student learning in an undergraduate-level class. Case study methodology entailing a usage survey, an exit survey, and 12 in-depth semi-structured interviews was sought to examine patterns and characteristics of students' usage of social media and to elicit their perceptions on how the incorporation of Twitter and blogs facilitated their learning. Findings demonstrate that as advanced users of social media, the students highly embraced the incorporation of Twitter and blogs in the class. Not only were the students motivated to utilize social …

Instructional Guidance In Microblogging-Supported Learning: Insights From A Multiple Case Study, Tian Luo Jan 2015

Instructional Guidance In Microblogging-Supported Learning: Insights From A Multiple Case Study, Tian Luo

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Microblogging tools such as Twitter show potential to enrich classroom experience and benefit student learning. Research shows that instructional guidance is particularly necessary in computer-assisted learning environments, but no research has been done to study the effects of instructional guidance in microblogging-based learning. Using a multiple-case study design, the researcher examined student learning in terms of the amount of participation, ability to focus on task, and depth of thinking in guided, semi-guided, and unguided modes. The findings suggest that in guided environments, students achieved higher levels of learning, especially with respect to focusing on task and depth of thinking. Variations …

The Wild Side : Get Fierce, Get Fit, Get Fun, Mason Goché

University Honors Theses

Have you ever thought about how a wild animal chooses food? How do they pick food that has the exact vitamin or micronutrient that the body needs?

Every wretched food craving that has left you over your ideal weight is to your benefit. Those cravings have kept you alive. They only show that your system is strong; your will to survive is immense. Every extra ounce that you carry signifies your fierce system overtaking you with the will to survive. Your brain taking over your body to get the nutrients it needs is like a horse breaking through barbed wire. …

Colorblind Ideology Expressed Through Children’S Picture Books: A Social Justice Issue, Brooke Manross Guilfoyle Jan 2015

Colorblind Ideology Expressed Through Children’S Picture Books: A Social Justice Issue, Brooke Manross Guilfoyle

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This paper investigates the presence of people of color and white people as protagonists in a sample of recently published children’s picture books. The author proposes that the relative lack of books about people of color in the sample is reflective of colorblind ideology, denies children of color the opportunity to find themselves in books, and may support the development of racist attitudes in white children. The need for children of color and white children to be exposed to a variety of titles in which contemporary children of color are protagonists is presented as a social justice issue, related to …

Using Ignatian Pedagogy To Guide Reflections While Blogging, Terry Buxton, Nicole Ellison Jan 2015

Using Ignatian Pedagogy To Guide Reflections While Blogging, Terry Buxton, Nicole Ellison

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Communicating, interpreting and connecting service experiences with learning can be challenging for both a student and for a mentor/instructor. How does one realize a transformation? How does another interpret if that transformation has taken place? Previously, an assignment to write a reflection paper about service learning experiences during one of the core undergraduate RN-BSN courses at Regis University was in place but it did not seem to provide an avenue for the student to make those connections or realizations. Likewise, it was extremely challenging for faculty to objectively understand if the transformation and learning occurred. We found that by combining …

Promoting Transgender Understanding And Acceptance At A Jesuit University, Stefan Rowniak, Chenit Ong-Flaherty Jan 2015

Promoting Transgender Understanding And Acceptance At A Jesuit University, Stefan Rowniak, Chenit Ong-Flaherty

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Transgender individuals have faced and continue to face misunderstanding and severe discrimination in society and in accessing the provision of healthcare. Two nursing faculty at a Jesuit university addressed this issue in a Jesuit community dialogue supported by a Jesuit grant. This dialogue was framed within Jesuit teachings and was consistent with the value of social justice, something fundamental to both the profession of nursing and Jesuit teachings. Three transgender individuals and a Jesuit priest each spoke of their personal experience and then opened the dialogue up for questions. Faculty and students overwhelmingly found the dialogue to be helpful and …

(Mis)Interpreting Arts And Health: What (Else) Can An Arts Practice Do?, Sheelagh Broderick Jan 2015

(Mis)Interpreting Arts And Health: What (Else) Can An Arts Practice Do?, Sheelagh Broderick

Doctoral

This research project concerns arts practices in healthcare settings and the encounter between artist, researcher, healthcare professional and institution. Rather than understanding arts practices as either therapeutic or recreational services, this research asks instead, what (else) can an arts practice do? This is accomplished by connecting two previously separate bodies of scholarship; health sociology and an art criticism of expanded arts practices. By connecting these bodies of scholarship, this inquiry offers a new conceptual language and orientation for arts and health practitioners distinct from the evidence-based practice model most prevalent in academic and professional discourses and consequently establishes a transdisciplinary …

Visualising Migrant Voices: Co-Creative Documentary And The Politics Of Listening, Darcy Alexandra Jan 2015

Visualising Migrant Voices: Co-Creative Documentary And The Politics Of Listening, Darcy Alexandra

Doctoral

This ethnography of media production explores the challenges of literally and figuratively visualising voice. The labour of a shared production and the distribution of the audio-visual documentary essays unfolded within a field of diverse, and at times, conflicting interests. For this reason, judicious attention to what I name ‘encounters’ of ‘political listening’ (Bickford 1996; Dreher 2009) provides one framework for theorising the challenges of researching with marginalised subjects and stories, and the contradictions of developing shared practices within proprietary contexts. These encounters reveal moments of listening and being heard, struggles over ‘veracity’ and ‘evidence,’ and the power relations inherent in …

Alternatives To The Use Of Heritage Squares In Dublin City Centre, David O'Connor Jan 2015

Alternatives To The Use Of Heritage Squares In Dublin City Centre, David O'Connor

Conference Papers

criticised. The problem was resolved in part by relocating bus termini, mainly to other edge-of-centre on-street locations. These included certain protected heritage environments such as Merrion Square. Objections have been raised by prominent heritage interest groups, notably the Irish Georgian Society. The use of such locations has been justified by state bus agencies on grounds of cost, expediency and lack of viable alternatives. This study, prepared as part of a DIT Community-Links initiative with the Irish Georgian Society, investigates the potential for an alternative, viable and sustainable bus layover strategy for Dublin city centre. The study considers the wider social, …
