Un Paso Adelante, Dos Pasos Atras : La Mujer Espanola En Insolacion Y Nada, Sarah Elizabeth Minogue

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Spanish women struggled to maintain the rights and independence they deserve. In present day, this challenge persists. Though much progress has been made, the author posits that the position of Spanish women has also regressed in many ways. Using the novels Insolacion by Emilia Pardo Bazan and Nada by Carmen Laforet as the analyzed texts, the author provides evidence to prove that overall, Spanish women have not experienced the true freedom and equality they are entitled to.

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the rhetorical context, preservation, and dissemination of the final statements of American felons executed between 1985 and Spring 2012, as well as the history of these items in the West generally and America specifically. This examination found little variance in final statement genre incidence rates with respect to ethnicity, gender, date of utterance, or any other temporal or demographic factor. As a result, it examines in detail the cultural context which stabilizes and centers this type of utterance, and explores how such statements move through American society and are transformed in the process. It argues that such …

Impression Management, Super Pacs, And The 2012 Republican Primaries, Nathan Katz Jan 2015

Impression Management, Super Pacs, And The 2012 Republican Primaries, Nathan Katz

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Super Political Action Committees (PACs) are relatively new organizations within American politics that allow individuals to donate unlimited funds to campaign causes. This was particularly noticeable during the 2012 Republican primary, which was one of the most well-funded primaries in American history. One of the ways both candidates and Super PACs spend their money is for the production of campaign ads to develop candidate images. These advertisements contribute to a political impression management that develops candidate performances. I have used the Symbolic Interactionist perspective for this study because the theory states that the images or presentations of individuals are continuously …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Ore deposits are local and/or regional deviations from the country rock where desired minerals and/or metals are deposited in elevated concentrations. Porphyry ore deposits are those temporally and spatially associated with intermediate to felsic igneous intrusion(s) and commonly form via magmatic and hydrothermal components. In these systems, the MVP is thought to be the dominant transporter of desired elements (e.g. Cu, Au) towards sites of deposition. Commonly, the minerals that exist in porphyry deposits are sulfides (e.g. chalcopyrite, bornite, etc.), oxides and native elements. In this study, we conduct a fluid inclusion study to evaluate the concentration of metals (e.g. …

Modulation Of The Il-6 Receptor Alpha Underlies Gli2-Mediated Regulation Of Immunoglobulin Secretion In Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia, David A. Jackson Jan 2015

Modulation Of The Il-6 Receptor Alpha Underlies Gli2-Mediated Regulation Of Immunoglobulin Secretion In Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia, David A. Jackson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Immunoglobulin (Ig) secretion by terminally differentiated B cells is an important component of the immune response to foreign pathogens. Its over-production is a defining characteristic of many B cell malignancies including Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM), where elevated levels of IgM is associated with significant morbidity and poor prognosis. Therefore, the identification and characterization of the mechanisms controlling Ig secretion are of great importance for the development of future therapeutic approaches for this disease. Here, we define a novel pathway involving the oncogenic transcription factor GLI2 which modulates IgM secretion by WM malignant cells. Pharmacological and genetic inhibition of GLI2 but not …

Not Under My Roof : Interracial Relationships And Black Image In Post-World War Ii Film, Andre Berchiolly

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the historical implications of miscegenation and interracial interactions between minority males and white females in Post-World War II independent cinema. Elia Kazan's studio film Pinky (1949) exemplifies the perceived acceptable studio representations of interracial coupling. My examination of Kazan's film provides a starting point from which to evaluate other textual situations of interracial interaction, particularly in relation to casting. In contrast, Pierre Chenal's adaptation of Richard Wright's Native Son, Sangre Negra (1951) exhibits key differences in interracial depictions between studio productions and independent productions of that era. After a comparative analysis of Kazan's and Chenal's films, further …
