The Crisis Of Images: A Reading Of Feed A Child’S Controversial 2014 Advertisement, Marcel Tchatchou Jan 2015

The Crisis Of Images: A Reading Of Feed A Child’S Controversial 2014 Advertisement, Marcel Tchatchou

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This work reads Feed A Child’s 2014 South African fund raising campaign advertisement (http://goo.gl/cRboV7) through Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding model of communication. Utilizing concepts from Stuart Hall’s model this paper draws attention to racial questions raised by the commercial. Even though the commercial’s stated purpose is to raise awareness of unequal social conditions in South Africa, its visual elements are racially offensive. The turmoil generated by the commercial is the consequence of the complex structure of its message, and the fact that its meaning is not determined solely by the organization’s stated intentions. This work explores the way that the processes …

The purpose of this study is to computationally model and analyze the vehicle frame which is mounted with a non-conventional, non-cylindrical compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel tank. Integration of this tank in the vehicle underbody will resolve the issue of reduced storage space which is observed in a conventional CNG powered vehicle. This research will ultimately result in making CNG a good alternative to gasoline and reducing the increasing dependency on a single fuel. This tank will be developed in two phases: phase I design of the tank will be a standard rectangular outer box shape with Schwarz P-surface inner …

An Analysis Of China’S Biofuels Policy And Chinese Discourse On Land Acquisition For Biofuels In Africa, Xuna Yang Jan 2015

An Analysis Of China’S Biofuels Policy And Chinese Discourse On Land Acquisition For Biofuels In Africa, Xuna Yang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

China has recently undertaken a very ambitious biofuel production program. However due to a lack of arable land domestically, this program has necessitated the leasing of arable land elsewhere (e.g., in Africa). This thesis first conducts a policy analysis of China’s biofuel policy using a historical institutionalism ends-and-means framework. The analysis reveals the ways in which China achieves its biofuel production goals through adopting various levels of policy means. China’s success in biofuel development is partly due to its unique policy-making and policy-assessment system, which ensures that biofuel production goals can be met. The second chapter analyzes China’s discourse on …

Reducing Releases Of Pahs: A Comparative Case Study Of Coal Tar Sealant Bans In The United States, Margaret Morrison Jan 2015

Reducing Releases Of Pahs: A Comparative Case Study Of Coal Tar Sealant Bans In The United States, Margaret Morrison

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Coal tar based sealants are applied to parking lots, driveways, and playgrounds in order to prevent pavements from deteriorating and cracking. Approximately 85 million gallons of coal tar based sealants are applied annually in the United States. In the mid-2000s scientists discovered that these type of sealants release polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can be harmful to human and ecosystem health. After this discovery, dozens of city, county, and state wide bans of the product were put in place. However, some attempts at statewide bans have failed, while others have succeeded. This research examines the factors explaining the difference. These …

Mia40 Protein Serves As An Electron Sink In The Mia40-Erv1 Import Pathway, Sonya E. Neal, Deepa V. Dabir, Heather L. Tienson, Darryl M. Horn, Kathrin Glaeser, Rachel R. Ogozalek Loo, Antoni Barrientos, Carla M. Koehler Jan 2015

Mia40 Protein Serves As An Electron Sink In The Mia40-Erv1 Import Pathway, Sonya E. Neal, Deepa V. Dabir, Heather L. Tienson, Darryl M. Horn, Kathrin Glaeser, Rachel R. Ogozalek Loo, Antoni Barrientos, Carla M. Koehler

Biology Faculty Works

A redox-regulated import pathway consisting of Mia40 and Erv1 mediates the import of cysteine-rich proteins into the mitochondrial intermembrane space. Mia40 is the oxidoreductase that inserts two disulfide bonds into the substrate simultaneously. However, Mia40 has one redox-active cysteine pair, resulting in ambiguity about how Mia40 accepts numerous electrons during substrate oxidation. In this study, we have addressed the oxidation of Tim13 in vitro and in organello. Reductants such as glutathione and ascorbate inhibited both the oxidation of the substrate Tim13 in vitro and the import of Tim13 and Cmc1 into isolated mitochondria. In addition, a ternary complex consisting …

Numerical Study Of Structural Responses Of Rigid And Flexible Pavements Under Heavy Vehicles’ Loading, Rezwana Kabir Jan 2015

Numerical Study Of Structural Responses Of Rigid And Flexible Pavements Under Heavy Vehicles’ Loading, Rezwana Kabir

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The highway system serves as the most critical transportation link in the economic development of a nation. In Michigan, about 74% of all the commodities delivered annually are transported by heavy trucks. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) permits multi-axle (11 axles) heavy truck with gross vehicle weight (GVW) limit of 164,000 lb., unlike many states having GVW limit of 80,000 lb. The effect of these heavy truck loadings on pavements might accelerate the rate of deterioration for flexible and rigid pavement structures. More detailed knowledge of the interaction of trucks with the pavement structure is essential for better management …

Flipping The Classroom To Teach Population Health: Increasing The Relevance., Vicki Simpson, Elizabeth Richards Jan 2015

Flipping The Classroom To Teach Population Health: Increasing The Relevance., Vicki Simpson, Elizabeth Richards

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

In recent years, there have been multiple calls to enhance the population health and health promotion aspects of nursing programs. Further impetus has been provided by passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 with its focus on prevention. The need to develop students who can critically think and apply knowledge learned is crucial to the development of nurses who can integrate and apply the concepts of population-focused practice in society and a healthcare system undergoing transformation. This coupled with the ever changing needs of learners requires a different approach to content delivery and presentation. Flipped classroom courses, with an …

Cultural Differences In Preference Of Auditory Emoticons: Usa And South Korea, Myounghoon Jeon, Lee Ju-Hwan, Jason Sterkenburg, Christopher Plummer Jan 2015

Cultural Differences In Preference Of Auditory Emoticons: Usa And South Korea, Myounghoon Jeon, Lee Ju-Hwan, Jason Sterkenburg, Christopher Plummer

Department of Psychology and Human Factors Publications

For the last two decades, research on auditory displays and sonification has continuously increased. However, most research has focused on cognitive and functional mapping rather than emotional mapping. Moreover, there has not been much research on cultural differences on auditory displays. The present study compared user preference of auditory emoticons in two countries: USA and South Korea. Seventy students evaluated 112 auditory icons and 115 earcons regarding 30 emotional adjectives. Results indicated that they showed similar preference in the same category (auditory icons or earcons), but they showed different patterns when they were asked to select the best sound between …

An Exploration Of Semiotics Of New Auditory Displays: A Comparative Analysis With Visual Displays, Myounghoon Jeon Jan 2015

An Exploration Of Semiotics Of New Auditory Displays: A Comparative Analysis With Visual Displays, Myounghoon Jeon

Department of Psychology and Human Factors Publications

Communicability is an important factor of user interfaces. To address communicability, extensive research has been done on visual displays, whereas relatively little research has been done on auditory displays. The present paper attempts to analyze semiotics of novel auditory displays (spearcon, spindex, and lyricon) using Peirce’s classification of signs: icon, symbol, and index. After the aesthetic developmental patterns of the visual counterparts are presented, semiotics of auditory cues is discussed with future design directions.

Semiconductor Laser Beam Bending, Remzi̇ Yildirim, Fati̇h Vehbi̇ Çelebi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This study is about a single-component cylindrical structured lens with a gradient curve that was used for bending laser beams. It operates under atmospheric conditions and bends the laser beam independently of temperature, pressure, polarity, polarization, magnetic field, electric field, radioactivity, and gravity. A single-piece cylindrical lens that can bend laser beams was developed. Lenses are made of transparent, tinted, or colored glass and are used to undermine or absorb the energy of laser beams. This study is not a work of a plasma filamentation, nor is related to a self-accelerating wave packet. Rather, it focuses on bending the laser …

Edward Snowden: Hero Or Traitor? Considering The Implications For Canadian National Security And Whistleblower Law, Mark Friedman Jan 2015

Edward Snowden: Hero Or Traitor? Considering The Implications For Canadian National Security And Whistleblower Law, Mark Friedman

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Edward Snowden’s disclosures of secret National Security Agency documents have significant implications for Canadian national security law. Snowden’s revelation that the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) attempted to spy on the Brazilian government is analyzed to determine: first, whether economic intelligence gathering is a legal function of CSEC; and, second, whether CSEC employees would be afforded protection by the Security of Information Act (SOIA) if they decided to reveal the existence of such a program. Since whistleblower protection for intelligence agency personnel has never been tested in Canadian courts, the author draws on different areas of law to fill a …

Canadian Prison Needle-Exchange Programs: Can The Health Benefits Overcome The Current Legal Barriers?, Adrien Iafrate Jan 2015

Canadian Prison Needle-Exchange Programs: Can The Health Benefits Overcome The Current Legal Barriers?, Adrien Iafrate

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The incidence of HIV and Hepatitis C is significantly higher in Canadian federal penitentiaries than among the general public, as are the transmission rates of these two diseases. These disproportionate rates of infection are largely attributed to the sharing of needles among inmates who are addicted to intravenous drugs. This has created a serious public health risk for all federal inmates as well as the general public, since many of these inmates will be released back into society. In response to this risk, the Correctional Service of Canada asked the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to study the effectiveness …

Caveat Cloudster: Why Traditional Common And Civil Property Law Should Apply To Virtual Property And How It Will Change The Legal Realities Of The Internet, Matthew Quadrini Jan 2015

Caveat Cloudster: Why Traditional Common And Civil Property Law Should Apply To Virtual Property And How It Will Change The Legal Realities Of The Internet, Matthew Quadrini

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

With the increasing trade in and production of virtual content (e-books, digital music, files stored in the cloud, etc.) and an ever growing use of virtual real estate (email accounts, online storefronts, URLs, etc.) in commercial transactions, the legal interest users hold in their virtual property will determine whether all have the power to prosper in this new, multi-billion-dollar virtual economy. In the cloud, service providers can grant or destroy scores of virtual property with the click of a button and without compensation—a power not even available to the Canadian government. As it stands, the legal regime governing virtual property …

Application Of "Shallow-Water" Numerical Models For Hazard Assessment Of Volcanic Flows: The Case Of Titan2d And Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica), Sylvain J. Charbonnier, José L. Palma, Sarah Ogburn Jan 2015

Application Of "Shallow-Water" Numerical Models For Hazard Assessment Of Volcanic Flows: The Case Of Titan2d And Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica), Sylvain J. Charbonnier, José L. Palma, Sarah Ogburn

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper introduces Titan2D, a depth averaged model of an incompressible Coulomb continuum for "shallow water" granular flows. Titan2D has been used successfully at many volcanoes to predict inundation by block-and-ash flows and debris avalanches. It can be run as a stand-alone program or through Vhub, a cyber-infrastructure platform. Practical considerations of choosing appropriate user inputs and the basics of running the model are discussed herein. Both synthetic and natural terrain examples are presented, including simulations of a block-and-ash flow generated from the gravitational collapse of a synthetic dome at Turrialba volcano (Costa Rica). These results suggest that the model …

Research Project: Children In Agriculture, Rachel Milliron

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

The concept of the “American dream” lures many immigrants to the U.S. each year. Patterns of immigration to the U.S. throughout history may be categorized into waves, including major waves from Asia, Europe, and Latin America (Nelli 1987: 200–01). American industries have welcomed and capitalized from the influx of cheap labor in the workforce. The agricultural industry employs many immigrants, and, more specifically, child immigrants or children of immigrants (Human Rights Watch 2014a). The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 exempts minors in agricultural jobs from the maximum-hour and the minimum-age requirements that apply to other working minors (Human Rights …

Trust And Scandal: A Tale Of Two Theories, James Martherus Jan 2015

Trust And Scandal: A Tale Of Two Theories, James Martherus

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

“I am not a crook.” Those five words are burned into the nation’s memory. President Nixon was under investigation after five men were arrested trying to break into the Watergate office complex, where the Democratic National Committee was headquartered. Evidence was found that the burglary was funded using money from Nixon’s re-election campaign. This led to cover-ups at high levels within the FBI, CIA, and the White House. Nixon was implicated in these cover-ups and was eventually charged with obstruction of justice, abuse of authority, and defiance of committee subpoenas. It was then that Nixon uttered the infamous phrase, “I …

Domestic Cruelty: Saevitia And Separation In Medieval France, Kristi Diclemente Jan 2015

Domestic Cruelty: Saevitia And Separation In Medieval France, Kristi Diclemente

Quidditas

This article examines the role cruelty played in marriage separation cases in fourteenth-century Paris. Cruelty was an effective and relatively successful means for women to initiate separation litigation. The archdeacon’s court regularly cited saevitia as a reason for its decision to legally separate marriages. Marital cruelty, however was a complicated issue and what constituted cruelty was not defined within the text. Through an examination of the use of saevitia in the legal cases,in conjunction with contemporary exempla of abusive marriages, such as the vita of Godelieve of Gistel, the author finds that it was a complicated term representing a variety …
