Is The Internet The Main Medium Of Transmitting Terrorism?, Hatem El Zein Jan 2015

Is The Internet The Main Medium Of Transmitting Terrorism?, Hatem El Zein

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

The influx of virtual media platforms has allowed extremists and terrorists to transmit their messages to wider audiences without passing through a gatekeeper or being a subject to editorial policies existed in traditional media outlets. Thus, extremists and terrorists exploit virtual media platforms to report their actions; propagate their ideologies and ultimately to boost their objectives, because these mediums enabled them to have control over time and space. As a result, some governments work to deprive extremists and terrorists from this 'oxygen' through monitoring the cyberspace to block the suspected virtual media platforms. The reactions of some governments to face …

Good Cop -- Bad Cop: Police Violence And The Child’S Mind, Andrea L. Dennis Jan 2015

Good Cop -- Bad Cop: Police Violence And The Child’S Mind, Andrea L. Dennis

Scholarly Works

Police violence against citizens lately has gripped the nation’s attention because of recent cases in Ferguson, Missouri; Staten Island, New York; Cleveland, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; and elsewhere. Children in those communities and nationwide have been directly and indirectly exposed to these well-publicized incidences of police killings and the aftermath of those killings.

Exposure to police violence may cause children physical, cognitive, emotional, and social trauma. Moreover, the exposure may negatively influence children’s mindsets regarding the criminal justice system and police.

Undoubtedly, these events of late are not the first and only instances in which children have been exposed to physically …

Unanticipated: Healthcare Experiences Of Gender Nonbinary Patients And Suggestions For Inclusive Care, Hannah Mogul-Adlin Jan 2015

Unanticipated: Healthcare Experiences Of Gender Nonbinary Patients And Suggestions For Inclusive Care, Hannah Mogul-Adlin

Public Health Theses

Transgender populations face substantial barriers to healthcare access, exacerbated by a lack of inclusive research. The health needs of those who are gender nonbinary or genderqueer, identifying outside the binary of man and woman, are especially poorly understood. Using a primarily qualitative online survey, data on gender identity, health access, and healthcare experiences were collected from 81 gender nonbinary participants, and analyzed using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. A number of interesting findings emerged, including that 90% of participants across age groups began identifying as gender nonbinary within the last 6 years, 77% reported interest in some aspect …

Contribution Of Income To Self-Management And Health Outcomes In Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes, Kaitlyn Rechenberg Jan 2015

Contribution Of Income To Self-Management And Health Outcomes In Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes, Kaitlyn Rechenberg

Public Health Theses

Low income has been established as a risk factor for poorer outcomes in

youth with type 1 diabetes; however, the effect of moderate income has not

been studied. The purpose of this secondary analysis of baseline data from a multi-site study was to compare glycemic control, self-management, and

psychosocial outcomes [depression, stress, and quality of life (QOL)] at

different income levels in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Youth (n=320,

mean age=12.3+1.1, 55% female, 64% white, mean A1C=8.3±1.4)

completed established self-management and psychosocial measures. A1C

levels were collected from medical records. Caregivers reported annual family income, categorized as high (>$80K), …

The Epidemiology Of Drug Use And Hiv-Related Risk Behaviors In Mwanza, Tanzania, Xulin Tan

Public Health Theses

Heroin trafficking and consumption has increased steadily over the past decade in Tanzania, but limited information regarding HIV and drug abuse exists for the city of Mwanza. Our study investigates the epidemiology of drug use, and HIV risk behaviors among drug users in the northwestern city of Mwanza. Using a combination of targeted sampling and participant referral, we recruited 480 participants in Mwanza between June and August 2014. The sample was 92% male. Seventy-nine (16.4%) of participants reported injecting heroin, while 434 (90.4%) reported smoking heroin. Housing and cohabitation status were the only socioeconomic characteristics significantly associated with heroin injection. …

Differences In Hepatitis B Screening And Diagnosis Among Practices Serving Asian And Non-Asian Patients Using Electronic Health Records, Ha Vo

Public Health Theses

Background: Racial disparity in chronic infection with hepatitis B virus is a major public health issue in the United States. Limited data exist on rates of screening and diagnosis collected from providers instead of patient self-reported surveys.

Methods: Data were extracted from electronic health records (EHRs) of practices in New York City for 2013. Three measures of hepatitis B (Hep B) screening and diagnosis were collected: 1) lab tests for hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg); 2) diagnosis via International Classification of Diseases, 9th edition (ICD-9) codes; and 3) of lab tests ordered, positive results. Generalized estimating equation models were …

Strategies For Recruiting Representative Samples Of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, And Pacific Islanders For Population-Based Studies, Celeste Wong Jan 2015

Strategies For Recruiting Representative Samples Of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, And Pacific Islanders For Population-Based Studies, Celeste Wong

Public Health Theses

There is limited data on effective methods for recruiting ethnically and culturally diverse populations into population-based studies. For case-control studies in particular, appropriate selection and successful recruitment of representative control subjects remain a challenge. In a population-based case-control study assessing novel risk factors for breast cancer among Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs), we utilized a unique combination of population-based sampling, community-based recruitment methods, and internet- and media-based approaches for recruiting controls who were frequency matched to cases identified through a population-based cancer registry in the San Francisco Bay Area. We characterized the populations drawn from each recruitment …

Student Press Exceptionalism, Sonja R. West Jan 2015

Student Press Exceptionalism, Sonja R. West

Scholarly Works

Constitutional protection for student speakers is an issue that has been hotly contested for almost 50 years. Several commentators have made powerful arguments that theCourt has failed to sufficiently protect the First Amendment rights of all students. But this debate has overlooked an even more troubling reality about the current state ofexpressive protection for student — the especially harmful effect of the Court’s precedents on student journalists. Under the Court’s jurisprudence, schools may regulate with far greater breadth and ease the speech of student journalists than of their non-press classmates. Schools are essentially free to censor the student press even …

Five-Year Resistance Trends Of Bacterial Isolates In Kigali, Rwanda, Makeda Aminah Carroll Jan 2015

Five-Year Resistance Trends Of Bacterial Isolates In Kigali, Rwanda, Makeda Aminah Carroll

Public Health Theses

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the phenomenon of decreased sensitivity to pharmaceutical agents that kill or inhibit the growth of bacterial pathogens, is a serious threat to public health worldwide. Many countries, including Rwanda, lack current information on antibiotic sensitivity profiles that would greatly aide clinicians and policy-makers. The current study aims to describe the time trends of antibiotic sensitivity for the isolates of six different bacterial pathogens from patients at King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda and to make inference about future patterns of drug resistance in the study setting, to guide physicians in their prescribing practices and provide baseline data …

Environmental Policy Assessment & Observation (Epao) In Daycare Centers: Does The Daycare Provider And Environment Matter?, Jenna Ciotti

Public Health Theses

Abstract

Background: Prior to the development of the Activity Begins in Childhood (ABC) Trial, no cluster-randomized control trial has investigated the effectiveness of a physical activity intervention with daycare providers in Canada.

Rationale: Educating daycare providers about the importance of improving their preschooler’s gross motor skills, physical activity, and reducing sedentary time in their daycare environments is an important step toward diminishing the rates of childhood obesity and overweight across Canada.

Method: A total of N = 15 daycare centers were enrolled in the ABC trial and equally randomized to: Intervention 1, Intervention 2, or a Comparison Group. Intervention providers …

Gleaning In The Cedar Valley: A Post-Evaluation Study, Dylan Thomas Hillyer Jan 2015

Gleaning In The Cedar Valley: A Post-Evaluation Study, Dylan Thomas Hillyer

Honors Program Theses

Gleaning is a term describing the act of either picking, cleaning or sorting produce that would otherwise be wasted. It is a practice long known to Europe, and in the past thirty years has gained immense popularity among non-profit organizations throughout the United States. The Cedar Valley Gleaning Program (CVGP) had its pilot-year in the fall of 2014. This thesis seeks to improve the efficacy of the CVGP through examining both the pilot year, and a qualitative study of gleaning operations worldwide, to answer the question: How can gleaning become an effective tool for communities in the Cedar Valley.

Investigating Educational Quality At One Comprehensive University, Blake Thurston Findley Jan 2015

Investigating Educational Quality At One Comprehensive University, Blake Thurston Findley

Honors Program Theses

President Obama has called for increased access to higher education and simultaneously wants greater educational quality from our colleges and universities. Comprehensive universities in particular, due to their high enrollment of underserved populations, need to ensure they are providing the highest quality education possible. The current study investigated educational quality at a comprehensive university by examining research-supported behaviors related to educational quality as well as perceptions of educational quality of faculty and students. The study found that faculty play a tremendous role in comprehensive universities, yet are underappreciated by their administration. Additionally, comprehensive universities are trying to be everything to …

Catherine Lennon's Story: Lessons From Front Line Advocacy On The Human Right To Housing, Rob Robinson Jan 2015

Catherine Lennon's Story: Lessons From Front Line Advocacy On The Human Right To Housing, Rob Robinson

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Discusses the United States housing crisis, where four and a half million families were foreclosed on between 2008 and 2013. Families who lacked universal or adequate health insurance, found the physical pain and suffering of a loved one was soon followed by the economic pain and suffering associated with the high costs of health care. The human reality of this suffering is reflected by the story of New York state resident Catherine Lennon. Ensuring the pay out to Bank of America was the law firm of Steven J. Baum, the notorious New York based foreclosure mill, which has since been …

The Right To Housing In France: Still A Long Way To Go From Intention To Implementation, Claire Lévy-Vroelant Jan 2015

The Right To Housing In France: Still A Long Way To Go From Intention To Implementation, Claire Lévy-Vroelant

Journal of Law and Social Policy

The goal of this essay is to examine the implementation of housing rights in France. Legislation adopted in March 2007 opened the possibility of an enforceable right, which can be asserted before a court. However, it also created new inequalities before the law. Indeed, the conditions required to access that right exclude people who do not have permanent residence or a valid temporary resident permit. The implementation of this right is also limited due to the lack of available housing, especially at Ile-de-France, and to competition between people with priority entitlements. The horrible fire at a furnished Parisian hotel in …

Do Us Proud: Poor Women Claiming Adjudicative Space At Cesr, Emily Paradis Jan 2015

Do Us Proud: Poor Women Claiming Adjudicative Space At Cesr, Emily Paradis

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Claiming Our Rights was a feminist participatory action research project based at Sistering, a Toronto drop-in for women facing homelessness. At weekly meetings over the course of eighteen months, members learned about social and economic rights, gave testimony on their lived experiences, and undertook actions to claim their rights. Among other initiatives, the group—which members named FORWARD—contributed a report on women’s homelessness to the 2006 review of Canada by the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. This paper draws upon observations of the group’s process and in-depth interviews with participants to assess this human rights education methodology. …
