Presidential Rhetoric: A Call To War In The Post-Cold War United States, Benjamin Larkin Jan 2015

Presidential Rhetoric: A Call To War In The Post-Cold War United States, Benjamin Larkin

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis considers the rhetoric advocating for the use of military force by United States Presidents following the end of the Cold War, using Aristotle’s model of rhetoric as a persuasive tool as a framework. Aristotle asked: What is the character of the speaker? What logical arguments has the speaker made? Has the speaker understood and appealed to the emotions of the listener? As of this writing, there have been four United States Presidents since 1989: George H.W. Bush, William Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Each used rhetoric to advocate for the use of military force. By considering …

Effect Of In Vivo Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (Pbde) Treatment On Hepatic Glyceroneogenesis And Lipid Metabolism, Kylie Rose Cowens Jan 2015

Effect Of In Vivo Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (Pbde) Treatment On Hepatic Glyceroneogenesis And Lipid Metabolism, Kylie Rose Cowens

Master's Theses and Capstones

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame-retardant chemicals that contaminate the environment. Through ingestion and inhalation, these chemicals get into the human body, where they affect the liver by suppressing the metabolic enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), which is partially responsible for glyceride-glycerol production via glyceroneogenesis. This study investigated the effects of PBDE-induced hepatic PEPCK suppression on glyceroneogenesis, and the associated perturbations in liver lipid metabolism. Twenty-eight male, weanling Wistar rats were treated daily with 14 mg/kg body weight PBDE mixture, DE-71 (TRT, n=14) or corn oil vehicle (CON, n=14) for 28 days. After a 48-hour fast, rats were sacrificed and blood …

Mobile Video Delivery With Minimal Bitrate Changes, Mario Atallah Jan 2015

Mobile Video Delivery With Minimal Bitrate Changes, Mario Atallah

Master's Theses and Capstones

Mobile data traffic keeps increasing year after year, as does the need for devices and technologies that support that growth. Video streaming, in particular, has been the major concern for mobile data traffic due to the complexity in handling the bulky nature of the data. HTTP has become the main medium for video streaming over mobile devices due to its existing popularity. When streaming video to multiple clients on the same network, a bandwidth allocation manager is required to efficiently distribute the available bandwidth among the clients and to ensure a high Quality of Experience (QoE). At the same time, …

Developing A Horizontal In-Line Diffused Aeration System For Removing Trihalomethanes From Water Distribution Mains, Meagan Mccowan Jan 2015

Developing A Horizontal In-Line Diffused Aeration System For Removing Trihalomethanes From Water Distribution Mains, Meagan Mccowan

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study collected removal data for four EPA regulated trihalomethanes (chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform) for a pilot scale horizontal in-line diffused aeration (HILDA) system under various design and operational variables. Design variables included water flow rate, air to water (A:W) ratio, reactor length, pressure, trihalomethane (THM) speciation and mixer type.

A HILDA system that could remove THMs from a pressurized piping system was developed and an air-water mixing expression was used to model the treatment performance when using Komax static in-line mixers in the system. The models can be used to predict the mixing intensity needed to achieve a …

Optimisation Of Traffic Steering For Heterogeneous Mobile Networks, Sandra Frei Jan 2015

Optimisation Of Traffic Steering For Heterogeneous Mobile Networks, Sandra Frei

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Mobile networks have changed from circuit switched to IP-based mobile wireless packet switched networks. This paradigm shift led to new possibilities and challenges. The development of new capabilities based on IP-based networks is ongoing and raises new problems that have to be tackled, for example, the heterogeneity of current radio access networks and the wide range of data rates, coupled with user requirements and behaviour. A typical example of this shift is the nature of traffic, which is currently mostly data-based; further, forecasts based on market and usage trends indicate a data traffic increase of nearly 11 times between 2013 …

Exploring Communication Patterns In The Discussion Of Maternal Pku Syndrome Between Parents And Daughters, Hannah Beth Andrews Jan 2015

Exploring Communication Patterns In The Discussion Of Maternal Pku Syndrome Between Parents And Daughters, Hannah Beth Andrews

Theses and Dissertations

Maternal PKU syndrome is the collection of features and birth defects that arise from uncontrolled phenylalanine levels in a pregnant woman with phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) deficiency, previously known as phenylketonuria (PKU). Currently, the literature is lacking in exploring what young women are being told about maternal PKU syndrome. In this study, communication patterns between parents and their daughters about maternal PKU syndrome were investigated through an online survey completed by parents. The survey assessed parents’ level of comfort with this topic, the information they discussed with their daughter and the resources they accessed. Followup interviews were conducted with participants to …

Exploring How The Risk Of Sudden Cardiac Death Is Discussed In Families With A Diagnosis Of A Sads Condition, Kristin Anne Wiley

Theses and Dissertations

Sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), where death is secondary to cardiac arrhythmia, is associated with several cardiac ion channelopathies, including long QT syndrome and Brugada syndrome, as well as cardiomyopathies such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy. Many of these conditions often present in childhood or adolescence. This study investigates how diagnoses of cardiac diseases associated with SADS are communicated within families. A questionnaire was distributed through cardiac disease-focused support groups and organizations. Data from 114 parents who have a child with a SADS condition were used for analysis. Based on the responses, parents explained the risk of SADS in …

Evaluating The “Family-Centered” Approach Of Pediatric Multidisciplinary Down Syndrome Clinics: A Parents’ Perspective, Devon A. Haynes

Theses and Dissertations

Down syndrome is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability. Individuals with Down syndrome usually display mild to moderate intellectual disability, developmental delay, characteristic facial features, and an increased risk for birth defects and various medical problems. Multidisciplinary clinics were established to address the multi-system health concerns for Down syndrome, increase adherence to medical management guidelines, and provide coordinated and comprehensive care for the patient. Research has examined the beneficial effect of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and medical outcomes; however, no studies have been done which evaluate the psychosocial aspect of the care provided.

We hypothesized that …

Hospital Preparedness In Community Measles Outbreaks-Challenges And Recommendations For Low-Resource Settings, Sadia Shakoor, Fatima Mir, Anita Zaidi, Afia Zafar Jan 2015

Hospital Preparedness In Community Measles Outbreaks-Challenges And Recommendations For Low-Resource Settings, Sadia Shakoor, Fatima Mir, Anita Zaidi, Afia Zafar

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

We have reviewed various strategies involved in containment of measles in healthcare facilities during community outbreaks. The strategies that are more applicable to resource-poor settings, such as natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation with heating and air-conditioning systems allowing unidirectional air-flow, and protection of un-infected patients and healthcare workers (HCWs), have been examined. Ventilation methods need innovative customization for resource-poor settings followed by validation and post-implementation analysis for impact. Mandatory vaccination of all HCWs with two doses of measles-containing vaccine, appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis of immunocompromised inpatients, and stringent admission criteria for measles cases can contribute toward reduction of nosocomial and secondary transmission …

Hiv Prevalence In Blood Donors And Recipients In Pakistan: A Meta-Analysis And Analysis Of Blood-Bank Data, Bushra Moiz, Barkat Ali, Muhammad Hasnain Chatha, Ahmed Raheem, Hasan Abbas Zaheer

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:
The first instances of HIV-antibody detection in donated blood in Pakistan were reported in 1988. Since then, documentation of HIV in blood donors and of rates of transmission via transfusion has been limited. Previously assumed to have a low prevalence, HIV is an increasing health concern in Pakistan. Since there is no national, centralized blood-banking system, there are no reliable data on which to base estimated risks of transfusion-associated HIV infection. This study was therefore conducted to estimate the prevalence of HIV in blood donors and recipients in Pakistan between 1988 and 2012.
Methods:
Meta-analyses were undertaken of reported …

Legislating Morality Progressively - The Contraceptive Coverage Mandate, Religious Freedom, And Public Health Policy And Ethics, Michael J. Deboer

Journal of Law and Health

This Article studies the contraceptive coverage mandate from three different perspectives. First, it provides a historical treatment of the regulatory rules adopted by agencies in the Obama Administration – specifically, the Departments of the Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services, which this Article collectively refers to as “the Administration” or “the Departments” – that imposed the mandate, focusing specifically on the rulemaking processes used to develop and promulgate the rules. In performing this historical study, the Article traces the development of the mandate from its root in the ACA to full implementation in legislative (substantive) rules finalized by the …

Striking The Soda Ban: The Judicial Paralysis On The Department Of Health, Alana Sivin

Journal of Law and Health

Media coverage surrounding the New York City Department of Health’s recent portion-cap on sugary beverages sold in food service establishments tends to focus on public opinions regarding the role of government. Within this dialogue, there are two camps. On one hand lies the opposition; these individuals criticize the Department of Health as a “nanny state” involving itself with individual consumption choices. On the other side lay the supporters who recognize the gravity of the obesity epidemic and applaud government efforts to ameliorate its effects.

Characterization Of The Ecological Role Of Genes Mediating Acid Resistance In Lactobacillus Reuteri During Colonization Of The Gastrointestinal Tract, Janina A. Krumbeck, Nathan L Marsteller, Steven Frese, Daniel A. Peterson, Amanda Ramer-Tait, Robert W. Hutkins, Jens Walter

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Rodent-derived strains of Lactobacillus reuteri densely colonize the forestomach of mice and possess several genes whose predicted functions constitute adaptations towards an acidic environment. The objective of this study was to systematically determine which genes of L. reuteri 100-23 contribute to tolerance towards host gastric acid secretion. Genes predicted to be involved in acid resistance were inactivated, and their contribution to survival under acidic conditions was confirmed in model gastric juice. Fitness of five mutants that showed impaired in vitro acid resistance were then compared through competition experiments in ex-germ-free mice that were either treated with omeprazole, a proton-pump inhibitor …

God, Civic Virtue, And The American Way: Reconstructing Engel, Corinna Barrett Lain Jan 2015

God, Civic Virtue, And The American Way: Reconstructing Engel, Corinna Barrett Lain

Law Faculty Publications

If ever a decision embodied the heroic, counter majoritarian function we romantically ascribe to judicial review, it was the 1962 decision that struck down school prayer-Engel v. Vitale. Engel provoked more outrage, more congres- sionalattemptsto overturnit, andmoreattackson theJusticesthanperhapsany other decision in Supreme Court history. Indeed, Engel's counter majoritarian narrative is so strong that scholars have largely assumed that the historical record supports our romanticized conception of the case.Itdoesnot. Usingprimary source materials, this Article reconstructs the story of Engel, then explores the implicationsof this reconstructednarrative. Engel is not the countermajoritarian case it seems, but recognizing that allows us to see Engel …

Inductively, triangulated …

Google As Copyright Iconoclast, James Gibson Jan 2015

Google As Copyright Iconoclast, James Gibson

Law Faculty Publications

Google’s role as a copyright defendant has provided fodder for many an essay in this series, particularly with regard to the Google Books litigation. (Incidentally, that litigation celebrates its tenth anniversary next month – and it’s still going strong.) A more recent Google case, however, is probably just as important, and it provides another interesting lesson in the Internet behemoth’s copyright litigation strategy.

The case is Oracle v. Google. In early 2010, Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, the developer of Java, the popular cross-platform programming language. Soon thereafter, Oracle sued Google for copyright infringement, alleging that Google’s Android operating system copied …
