In Vitro Growth Suppression Of Renal Carcinoma Cells By Curcumin, Santhi D. Konduri, Madhavi Latha Yadav Bangaru, Phu Thanh Do, Shenglin Chen, Jeffrey Woodliff, Sanjay Kansra
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Purpose
Malignant clear cell renal carcinoma (ccRCC) is an aggressive tumor highly resistant to chemotherapy and radiation. Current therapeutic approaches to management of ccRCC have not significantly improved patient survival, therefore novel therapies are needed. Activated NFκB and STAT3 expression is associated with ccRCC pathogenesis. The dietary polyphenol curcumin is a well-documented antitumor agent and a known inhibitor of NFκB and STAT3 activation. Given the lack of effective therapies that block ccRCC progression, our objective was to examine whether curcumin could suppress the growth and migration of ccRCC cells, and whether this suppression was mediated via inhibition of NFκB and …

Motionauth: Motion-Based Authentication For Wrist Worn Smart Devices, Junshuang Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Wrist worn smart devices are increasingly popular. As those devices collect sensitive personal information and often work as a companion component of smart phones, thus being treated trustworthy, appropriate user authentication mechanisms are necessary to prevent illegitimate access to those devices. However, the small form and function-based usage of wearable devices also pose a big challenge to authentication, which should be user friendly and unobtrusive. We propose MotionAuth, a behavioral biometric based authentication method, which collects user’s behavioral biometrics through a wrist worn smart device for building a user’s profile, and applies the profile in user validation. We implement MotionAuth …
Serial Obsession: Analyzing Media Fixation On Jack The Ripper, Rachell Nicole Hayes
Serial Obsession: Analyzing Media Fixation On Jack The Ripper, Rachell Nicole Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
There is psychological, historical, and scientific research into the social implications of media and the responsibility of audience. This thesis observed a rhetorical connection between media and the celebrity of high-profile serial killers. The research findings of this analysis began with the 1800s studying literature written in Victorian London with an appreciation for murder eventually leading into the high-profile coverage of the Whitechapel Murders of 1888 committed by history’s still most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper. This analysis discovered a pattern of language usage in media depictions of serial killers found in the coverage of this case and multiple …

The Relationship Of Childhood Stress To Adult Health And Mortality Among Individuals From Two U.S. Documented Skeletal Collections, Late 19Th To Early 20Th Centuries, Rhonda Coolidge
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although the association between social inequality and poor adult health is well established, the mechanisms by which inequality is translated into poor adult health are less clear. Increasingly, evidence suggests that many adult health problems and health disparities have their origins in early life; the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) hypothesis provides an explanatory mechanism linking adverse early life conditions with permanent structural or functional changes that increase the risk for disease. This hypothesis is consistent with bioarchaeological research noting reduced lifespan among individuals exhibiting signs of childhood stress.
The principal aim of this dissertation is to contribute …

Volatile Condensible Material Deposition In Leo Simulated Environment, Jinya Pu
Volatile Condensible Material Deposition In Leo Simulated Environment, Jinya Pu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicone and compounds are widely used in outer-space for bonding or potting spacecraft components. In geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO), the silicone may outgas species which can condense on optically sensitive surfaces and degrade their performance, therefore shortening the lifetime of spacecraft. In low-earth-orbit (LEO), the silicone rubber is subject to an energetic and corrosive environment. Atomic oxygen (AO) and ultraviolet radiation can cause abrasion and degradation of the silicone rubber, cause changes in existing condensed VCM films and affect the properties of VCM films condensing in this atmosphere. Experiments were performed to simulate GEO conditions. In …

Can Contested Primaries And Turnout In Primaries Reduce Corruption And Rent-Seeking?, Derek Beiter
Can Contested Primaries And Turnout In Primaries Reduce Corruption And Rent-Seeking?, Derek Beiter
Theses
Rent-seeking and corruption involving elected officials represent a betrayal of citizen trust, and many scholars believe these acts have detrimental impacts on economic growth. This makes the study of rent-seeking and corruption an important topic. The research question presented here is whether contested primary elections and primary election turnout can help reduce rent-seeking and corruption. The reasons this might be true can be seen through connections in the scholarly literature regarding the function of political parties and organized interests, the importance of citizen engagement in holding elected officials accountable, and the increase in safe seats among legislative bodies. With more …

Ikamva Youth: Field Research Analysis, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince
Miller Center Fellowship
IkamvaYouth empowers South African students from under-resourced and under-performing secondary schools to achieve academic results competitive with those of the best-funded schools in the country. The organisation is able to offer extensive tutoring services free of charge due to the hard work of its committed volunteer tutors. As more students, called “learners,” flock to join the programme and IkamvaYouth grows, it faces challenges in attracting and maintaining an optimal amount of volunteer tutors.
We conducted a quantitative online survey of tutors’ demographic information, backgrounds, and experiences with the organisation. Of IkamvaYouth’s approximately 300 tutors, 223 responded. We conducted tutor and …
