Human Resources’ Role In Avoiding Conflict In The Workplace, Brad Morris Dec 2015

Human Resources’ Role In Avoiding Conflict In The Workplace, Brad Morris

University Honors Program

Psychologists have proven there are many causes of conflict; the vast majority of these causes can find their roots in displaced anger or a buildup of stress that leads to an unhealthy release, such as a display of hostility. Human Resource professionals are expected to find a way to limit, control, and eliminate these situations before they become a problem. Avoiding situations of work place conflict, especially violence is one of the most important duties for a corporation; these issues can be avoided by the Human Resource Department with relative ease by hiring the right people, as to ensure the …

Intent Classification Of Short-Text On Social Media, Hemant Purohit, Guozhu Dong, Valerie L. Shalin, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Social media platforms facilitate the emergence of citizen communities that discuss real-world events. Their content reflects a variety of intent ranging from social good (e.g., volunteering to help) to commercial interest (e.g., criticizing product features). Hence, mining intent from social data can aid in filtering social media to support organizations, such as an emergency management unit for resource planning. However, effective intent mining is inherently challenging due to ambiguity in interpretation, and sparsity of relevant behaviors in social data. In this paper, we address the problem of multiclass classification of intent with a use-case of social data generated during crisis …

Logistic Regression Models To Predict Solvent Accessible Residues Using Sequence- And Homology-Based Qualitative And Quantitative Descriptors Applied To A Domain-Complete X-Ray Structure Learning Set, Reecha Nepal, Joanna Spencer, Guneet Bhogal, Amulya Nedunuri, Thomas Poelman, Thejas Kamath, Edwin Chung, Katherine Kantardjieff, Andrea Gottlieb, Brooke Lustig

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

A working example of relative solvent accessibility (RSA) prediction for proteins is presented. Novel logistic regression models with various qualitative descriptors that include amino acid type and quantitative descriptors that include 20- and six-term sequence entropy have been built and validated. A domain-complete learning set of over 1300 proteins is used to fit initial models with various sequence homology descriptors as well as query residue qualitative descriptors. Homology descriptors are derived from BLASTp sequence alignments, whereas the RSA values are determined directly from the crystal structure. The logistic regression models are fitted using dichotomous responses indicating buried or accessible solvent, …

Hyperbolic Memory Discounting And The Political Business Cycle, T. Scott Findley Dec 2015

Hyperbolic Memory Discounting And The Political Business Cycle, T. Scott Findley

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

The vintage political business cycle framework of Nordhaus (1975) represents the idea that the macroeconomic business cycle is manipulated opportunistically by an incumbent government to achieve re-election. A key assumption in this prototypical framework is that voters discount their memories about unemployment and inflation at a constant rate. Yet starting with Ebbinghaus (1885) and Jost (1897), a large body of research in psychology documents an empirical regularity that has come to be known as Jost's Second Law of Forgetting-individuals discount recent memories at a higher rate compared to the rate at which they discount older memories. I find that incorporating …

An R Package For The Panel Approach Method For Program Evaluation: Pampe, Ainhoa Vega-Bayo

The R Journal

The pampe package for R implements the panel data approach method for program evaluation designed to estimate the causal effects of political interventions or treatments. This procedure exploits the dependence among cross-sectional units to construct a counterfactual of the treated unit(s), and it is an appropriate method for research events that occur at an aggregate level like countries or regions and that affect only one or a small number of units. The implementation of the pampe package is illustrated using data from Hong Kong and 24 other units, by examining the economic impact of the political and economic integration of …

Poems For My Woofie The Story Of Lt. Wilfred V. Michaud, 1st Parachute Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Allison Orr

Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies

My senior capstone project is the creation of a book of investigative poetry. The subject of the work is my grandfather, Wilfred V. Michaud. He was a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. The poetry addresses the history of Michaud’s battalion and the battles it fought, as well as personal stories of Michaud’s life and experience in the service. Several secondary sources were used to gain historical context for the poetry. Additionally, primary sources were used to provide information about Michaud’s personal experiences. The combination of primary and secondary sources established the necessary background and …

Autonomic Nervous System Reactivity In A Free-Ranging Mammal: Effects Of Dominance Rank And Personality, Elodie F. Briefer, James A. Oxley, Alan G. Mcelligott Dec 2015

Autonomic Nervous System Reactivity In A Free-Ranging Mammal: Effects Of Dominance Rank And Personality, Elodie F. Briefer, James A. Oxley, Alan G. Mcelligott

Ethology Collection

Modulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity allows animals to effectively respond to internal and external stimuli in everyday challenges via changes in, for example, heart and respiration rate. Various factors, ranging from social such as dominance rank to internal such as personality or affective states can impact animal physiology. Our knowledge of the combinatory effects of social and internal factors on ANS basal activity and reactivity, and of the importance that each factor has in determining physiological parameters, is limited, particularly in nonhuman, free-ranging animals. In this study, we tested the effects of dominance rank and personality (assessed …

Capstone Revival, Mary Mesele, Ruochen Lu, Quilin Jiang

School of Professional Studies

The capstone project is a culminating experience whereby students choose to research a topic that is relevant in their field of study and have been highly regarded as important learning activities. The capstone allows students to use research, analytical, problem solving and evaluation skills they have learned in the course of the graduate program. McGill indicates the benefit of the completion of a capstone project not only in gaining knowledge in capstone but also in learning how to apply the knowledge gained in other courses in the major (McGill, 2012). Currently, COPACE (College of Professional and Continuing Education) has three …

Multi-Marker Linkage Disequilibrium Mapping Of Quantitative Trait Loci, Soyoun Lee Dec 2015

Multi-Marker Linkage Disequilibrium Mapping Of Quantitative Trait Loci, Soyoun Lee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Background: Genome-wide associations have been studied for years to infer relationships between biological traits and their underlying genetic causes, known as quantitative traits loci (QTL), in a process known as QTL mapping. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which are commonly used genetic markers, are usually in linkage disequilibrium (LD) with each other within a small genetic region. Both single- and double-marker-based LD mapping methods have been developed by taking advantage of LD structure. Method: In this thesis, a more general LD mapping framework with an arbitrary number of markers has been developed in order to improve LD mapping and its detection …

A Dynamic Oyster Reef Bioenergetics Model: Predictions Of Secondary Production Based On Different Restoration Scenarios, Elizabeth Gomez Dec 2015

A Dynamic Oyster Reef Bioenergetics Model: Predictions Of Secondary Production Based On Different Restoration Scenarios, Elizabeth Gomez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The presence of oyster reefs augments the biomass and abundance of many transient fish and crustacean species. Therefore, restoration of oyster reefs has become an increasingly common practice in coastal areas with the goal of enhancing production of transient fish. However, predicting the effect of oyster restoration on transient fish community biomass remains elusive. To address this challenge, I created a trophic bioenergetic model to understand how energy transfers in an oyster reef and assess the effects of various restoration strategies on transient fish species. The model used a set of functional groups representing organisms commonly found in an oyster …

Real-Time Power Flow Analysis & Short-Term Electricity Load Forecasting In Smart Grid, Muqi Li Dec 2015

Real-Time Power Flow Analysis & Short-Term Electricity Load Forecasting In Smart Grid, Muqi Li

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation studies two problems in smart grid, one of which is real-time power flow analysis. Power flow analysis is used to obtain the steady-state voltage phasors for the power system. The ability to perform power flow analysis quickly is essential for the successful implementation of advanced real-time control of transmission systems. We describe a sensor placement algorithm for conducting real-time parallel transmission network power flow computations. In particular, Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) can be such sensors. Graph partitioning is used to decompose the system into several subsystems and to locate sensors in an efficient way. Power flow calculations are …

The Application Of Trajectory Analysis For An Early Warning System In Stem Courses, Un Jung Lee Dec 2015

The Application Of Trajectory Analysis For An Early Warning System In Stem Courses, Un Jung Lee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The retention of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors has become a national concern. “Early warning systems†(EWS) are being developed to identify students who perform poorly early in the semester so that interventions can be implemented. The research reported here utilizes clicker scores and review quiz scores collected in every class session for the longitudinal analysis, as well as pre-course concept inventory scores and self-reported student characteristics. Pre course concept inventory scores were significantly predictive of final course grade. Student demographic characteristics had a smaller fraction of final course grade explained. The cumulative average student clicker score was …

An Ensemble Three-Dimensional Constrained Variational Analysis Method To Derive Large-Scale Forcing Data For Single-Column Models, Shuaiqi Tang Dec 2015

An Ensemble Three-Dimensional Constrained Variational Analysis Method To Derive Large-Scale Forcing Data For Single-Column Models, Shuaiqi Tang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Atmospheric vertical velocities and advective tendencies are essential as large-scale forcing data to drive single-column models (SCM), cloud-resolving models (CRM) and large-eddy simulations (LES). They cannot be directly measured or easily calculated with great accuracy from field measurements. In the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program, a constrained variational algorithm (1DCVA) has been used to derive large-scale forcing data over a sounding network domain with the aid of flux measurements at the surface and top of the atmosphere (TOA). We extend the 1DCVA algorithm into three dimensions (3DCVA) along with other improvements to calculate gridded large-scale forcing data. We also introduce …

The Bacterial Colonization Of Commonly Used Dental Implant Occluding Materials., Brandon G. Katz Dec 2015

The Bacterial Colonization Of Commonly Used Dental Implant Occluding Materials., Brandon G. Katz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Title: The Bacterial Colonization of Commonly Used Dental Implant Occluding Materials.  Purpose: To determine the bacterial communities inhabiting commonly used materials intended to block/occlude the screw access channel of dental implant crowns/restorations. To aid in the prevention of peri-implantitis, a material that harbors less pathogenic red and orange complex microbes would be potentially beneficial when microleakage is occurring. A superior material for the purpose of the occlusion of screw access channels in implant-supported prostheses is a material that may provide a surface to which bacteria may not colonize. The choice of an occluding material that is less favorable for bacterial …

Body And Horizon: Kant, Husserl, And The Nonconceptual Content Of Experience, Emiliano F. Diaz Dec 2015

Body And Horizon: Kant, Husserl, And The Nonconceptual Content Of Experience, Emiliano F. Diaz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The debate that took place between Herbert Dreyfus and John McDowell a few years back concerning the nonconceptual content of experience was in many ways disappointing. The question addressed in the debate between Dreyfus and McDowell, in its most basic form, is why we should think embodied cognition is a more compelling account of our motor engagement with the world than one that casts it in terms of concepts. A question that is not addressed is why we should find the justificatory grounds provided by either thinker more or less compelling than the other. To answer this question, I reframe …

Algebraic Bethe Ansatz And Tensor Networks, You Quan Chong Dec 2015

Algebraic Bethe Ansatz And Tensor Networks, You Quan Chong

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

We consider several exactly solvable models of strongly correlated electrons in one dimension, such as the Heisenberg XXX model, the supersymmetric t-J model and the Hubbard model. These models can be solved by using the method of graded algebraic Bethe ansatz. We use it to design graded tensor networks which can be contracted approximately to obtain a Matrix Product State. This overcomes a major shortcoming of current density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods which work well on the ground states, but have difficulty working with the excited states of such models. In addition, observables such as correlation functions are important …

Geometric Aspects Of Quantum Hall States, Andrey Gromov Dec 2015

Geometric Aspects Of Quantum Hall States, Andrey Gromov

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Explanation of the quantization of the Hall conductance at low temperatures in strong magnetic field is one of the greatest accomplishments of theoretical physics of the end of the 20th century. Since the publication of the Laughlin's charge pumping argument condensed matter theorists have come a long way to topological insulators, classification of noninteracting (and sometimes interacting) topological phases of matter, non-abelian statistics, Majorana zero modes in topological superconductors and topological quantum computation - the framework for ``error-free'' quantum computation. While topology was very important in these developments, geometry has largely been neglected. We explore the role of space-time symmetries …

Exploring The Space Of Superconformal Field Theories, Madalena Duarte De Almeida Lemos Dec 2015

Exploring The Space Of Superconformal Field Theories, Madalena Duarte De Almeida Lemos

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation focuses on the study of superconformal field theories (SCFTs) through the so-called (super)conformal bootstrap program. The goals of this program are twofold: to chart the space of allowed SCFTs and to solve specific theories. The hope is that symmetries and a few simple physical assumptions, combined with basic consistency requirements (crossing symmetry and unitarity) are powerful enough to completely “solve†these theories. In doing so we never have to provide a Lagrangian description for the theories in question, and thus we can employ the bootstrap in studying SCFTs for which no such description is known. This is the …

Theoretical Investigation Of Sub-Lattice Imaging By 4-D In-Line Holography, Guanzhong Huang Dec 2015

Theoretical Investigation Of Sub-Lattice Imaging By 4-D In-Line Holography, Guanzhong Huang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In conventional annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, the beam rasters on a thin sample and the signal map by integrating the transmitted electrons with an annular shaped detector in the diffraction space. Because the scattering cross sections for high-angle scattered electrons is proportional to the atomic number square. The resulting image has a so called Z-contrast. Z-contrast images can give atomic resolution images of atomic columns however it has an inherent problem—light elements buried in the tails of the heavy elements containing columns. In this thesis, we propose to use a pixelated a 2-D imaging detector to record the …
