The role of proton-assisted charge accommodation in electron capture by a heterocyclic electron scavenger is investigated through theoretical analysis of the vibrational spectra of cold, gas phase [Py·(H2O) n=3-5]- clusters. These radical anions are formed when an excess electron is attached to water clusters containing a single pyridine (Py) molecule in a supersonic jet ion source. Under these conditions, the cluster ion distribution starts promptly at n = 3, and the photoelectron spectra, combined with vibrational predissociation spectra of the Ar-tagged anions, establish that for n > 3, these species are best described as hydrated hydroxide ions …

‘Capitalism A Nuh’ Wi Frien’. The Formatting Of Farming Into An Asset, From Financial Speculation To International Aid, Luigi Russi, Tomaso Ferrando Oct 2015

‘Capitalism A Nuh’ Wi Frien’. The Formatting Of Farming Into An Asset, From Financial Speculation To International Aid, Luigi Russi, Tomaso Ferrando

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

This paper deciphers the formatting of farming into an asset by tracking the modalities by which financial calculation is enabled across different sites of agency.

The first focus of our analysis are commodity futures markets, which have witnessed a double spike in prices in 2008 and in 2012. In the paper, we look at these hikes as the outcome of endogenous dynamics, caused by the changing makeup of market participants after 2000, which turned futures markets into resources for hedging commodity index-linked derivative products.

We subsequently analyse the increasing reliance on financial actors placed by public development agencies that channel …

Quantum Interference In The Field Ionization Of Rydberg Atoms, Rachel Feynman, Jacob A. Hollingsworth, Michael Vennettilli, Tamas Budner, Ryan Zmiewski, Donald P. Fahey, Thomas J. Carroll, Michael W. Noel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We excite ultracold rubidium atoms in a magneto-optical trap to a coherent superposition of the three |mj | sublevels of the 37d5/2 Rydberg state. After some delay, during which the relative phases of the superposition components can evolve, we apply an electric field pulse to ionize the Rydberg electron and send it to a detector. The electron traverses many avoided crossings in the Stark levels as it ionizes. The net effect of the transitions at these crossings is to mix the amplitudes of the initial superposition into the same final states at ionization. Similar to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the three …

Hartogs-Type Extension For Tube-Like Domains In C², Al Boggess, Roman Dwilewicz, Zbigniew Slodkowski

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we consider the Hartogs-type extension problem for unbounded domains in C2. An easy necessary condition for a domain to be of Hartogs-type is that there is not a closed (in C2) complex variety of codimension one in the domain which is given by a holomorphic function smooth up to the boundary. The question is, how far this necessary condition is from the sufficient one? To show how complicated this question is, we give a class of tube-like domains which contain a complex line in the boundary which are either of Hartogs-type or not, …

A Transcriptomic Analysis Of Cave, Surface, And Hybrid Isopod Crustaceans Of The Species Asellus Aquaticus, Bethany A. Stahl, Joshua B. Gross, Daniel I. Speiser, Todd H. Oakley, Nipham H. Patel, Douglas B. Gould, Meredith E. Protas

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Cave animals, compared to surface-dwelling relatives, tend to have reduced eyes and pigment, longer appendages, and enhanced mechanosensory structures. Pressing questions include how certain cave-related traits are gained and lost, and if they originate through the same or different genetic programs in independent lineages. An excellent system for exploring these questions is the isopod, Asellus aquaticus. This species includes multiple cave and surface populations that have numerous morphological differences between them. A key feature is that hybrids between cave and surface individuals are viable, which enables genetic crosses and linkage analyses. Here, we advance this system by analyzing single …

Fast Hadamard Transforms For Compressive Sensing Of Joint Systems: Measurement Of A 3.2 Million-Dimensional Bi-Photon Probability Distribution, Daniel J. Lum, Samuel H. Knarr, John C. Howell Oct 2015

Fast Hadamard Transforms For Compressive Sensing Of Joint Systems: Measurement Of A 3.2 Million-Dimensional Bi-Photon Probability Distribution, Daniel J. Lum, Samuel H. Knarr, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We demonstrate how to efficiently implement extremely high-dimensional compressive imaging of a bi-photon probability distribution. Our method uses fast-Hadamard-transform Kronecker-based compressive sensing to acquire the joint space distribution. We list, in detail, the operations necessary to enable fast-transform-based matrix-vector operations in the joint space to reconstruct a 16.8 million-dimensional image in less than 10 minutes. Within a subspace of that image exists a 3.2 million-dimensional bi-photon probability distribution. In addition, we demonstrate how the marginal distributions can aid in the accuracy of joint space distribution reconstructions.

The Design Of Low Noise Amplifiers In Deep Submicron Cmos Processes: A Convex Optimization Approach, David H.K. Hoe, Xiaoyu Jin Oct 2015

The Design Of Low Noise Amplifiers In Deep Submicron Cmos Processes: A Convex Optimization Approach, David H.K. Hoe, Xiaoyu Jin

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

With continued process scaling, CMOS has become a viable technology for the design of high-performance low noise amplifiers (LNAs) in the radio frequency (RF) regime. This paper describes the design of RF LNAs using a geometric programming (GP) optimization method. An important challenge for RF LNAs designed at nanometer scale geometries is the excess thermal noise observed in the MOSFETs. An extensive survey of analytical models and experimental results reported in the literature is carried out to quantify the issue of excessive thermal noise for short-channel MOSFETs. Short channel effects such as channel-length modulation and velocity saturation effects are also …

Mitigating The Risk Of Extreme Water Scarcity And Dependency: The Case Of Jordan, Joep F. Schyns, Arwa Hamaideh, Arjen Y. Hoekstra, Mesfin Mekonnen, Marlou Schyns

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Jordan faces great internal water scarcity and pollution, conflict over trans-boundary waters, and strong dependency on external water resources through trade. This paper analyzes these issues and subsequently reviews options to reduce the risk of extreme water scarcity and dependency. Based on estimates of water footprint, water availability, and virtual water trade, we find that groundwater consumption is nearly double the groundwater availability, water pollution aggravates blue water scarcity, and Jordan’s external virtual water import dependency is 86%. The review of response options yields 10 ingredients for a strategy for Jordan to mitigate the risks of extreme water scarcity and …

The Concept Of The State In American History, William J. Novak Oct 2015

The Concept Of The State In American History, William J. Novak

Book Chapters

Debates about the state rage in contemporary America. On the right, libertarian and tea party rhetoric fulminates about shrinking the state or shutting down the government, frequently in hyperbolic terms like the Americans for Tax Reform notion of" drowning it in a bathtub." On the left, concern about the fate of the welfare state and an ever-expanding warfare and penal state produces equally impassioned retorts. Discussion of the American state-its nature, its size, and its uncertain future-dominates the political landscape as perhaps never before.

Probing Molecular Dynamics At The Nanoscale Via An Individual Paramagnetic Centre, T. Staudacher, N. Raatz, S. Pezzagna, J. Meijer, F. Reinhard, C. A. Meriles, J. Wrachtrup

Publications and Research

We demonstrate a protocol using individual nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond to observe the time evolution of proton spins from organic molecules located a few nanometres from the diamond surface. The protocol records temporal correlations among the interacting protons, and thus is sensitive to the local dynamics via its impact on the nuclear spin relaxation and interaction with the nitrogen vacancy. We gather information on the nanoscale rotational and translational diffusion dynamics by analysing the time dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance signal. Applying this technique to liquid and solid samples, we find evidence that liquid samples form a semi-solid layer …

Cobalt-Centred Boron Molecular Drums With The Highest Coordination Number In The Cob16− Cluster, Ivan A. Popov, Tian Jian, Gary V. Lopez, Alexander I. Boldyrev, Lai-Sheng Wang Oct 2015

Cobalt-Centred Boron Molecular Drums With The Highest Coordination Number In The Cob16− Cluster, Ivan A. Popov, Tian Jian, Gary V. Lopez, Alexander I. Boldyrev, Lai-Sheng Wang

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The electron deficiency and strong bonding capacity of boron have led to a vast variety of molecular structures in chemistry and materials science. Here we report the observation of highly symmetric cobalt-centered boron drum-like structures of CoB16−, characterized by photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The photoelectron spectra display a relatively simple spectral pattern, suggesting a high symmetry structure. Two nearly degenerate isomers with D8d(I) and C4v (II) symmetries are found computationally to compete for the global minimum. These drum-like structures consist of two B8 rings sandwiching a cobalt atom, which has the highest …

Design Of Shape Morphing Structures Using Bistable Elements, Ahmad Alqasimi Oct 2015

Design Of Shape Morphing Structures Using Bistable Elements, Ahmad Alqasimi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents new concepts and methodology in designing shape-morphing structures using bistable elements. Developed using the Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model (PRBM), linear bistable compliant mechanism elements produce predictable and controllable length changes. Step-by-step design procedures are developed to guide the design process of these bistable elements. Two different examples of Shape-Morphing Space Frames (SMSFs) were designed and prototyped utilizing the bistable linear elements in a single-layer grid, in addition to flexures and rigid links, to morph a cylindrical space frame into both a hyperbolic and a spherical space frame. Moreover, bistable unit-cell compliant-mechanism elements were also developed to morph a compact …
