Framing The Mh17 Disaster – More Heat Than Light?, Simon A. Bennett Oct 2015

Framing The Mh17 Disaster – More Heat Than Light?, Simon A. Bennett

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Despite the reductionist analyses produced by politicians and the Fourth Estate, the loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was a systems accident – a product of the interactions between the actants that compose the commercial aviation system network-space. As an antidote to reductionism’s ‘fundamental attribution error’, this paper presents a systems-thinking-informed analysis of the MH17 disaster. To this end it draws on Actor-Network Theory and the work of Reason, Toft, Dekker, Hollnagel and other systems-thinking advocates. Whether intentional or not, politicians’ reductionist analyses generated political capital. European Union and American finger-pointing distracted from aviation authorities’ and airlines’ ill-advised routing policies. …

A Numerical Study Of Liquid Tank And Structure Interaction, Bang-Fuh Chen, Shih-Ming Huang Oct 2015

A Numerical Study Of Liquid Tank And Structure Interaction, Bang-Fuh Chen, Shih-Ming Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A time-independent finite difference method was used to solve for a fully nonlinear sloshing fluid in a tank mounted on a structure. The interaction between the sloshing fluid and the dynamic response of the structure was investigated. The dynamic response of the structure was calculated using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method, and the numerical model was extensively validated through comprehensive data comparisons. The tank was tuned to an appropriate depth to length ratio and was used as a tuned liquid damper. Several cases, including large and small structures, were studied. In addition, a vibration control analysis of the tank-structure system in …

These were sourced using the International Maritime Organization's Global Integrated Shipping Information System and the reports published by the countries and relevant institutions that investigated the accidents. The grounding accidents are analysed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process, and the objective of this study is to act …

Uncapping Compensation In The Gore Punitive Damage Analysis, Shaakirrah R. Sanders Oct 2015

Uncapping Compensation In The Gore Punitive Damage Analysis, Shaakirrah R. Sanders

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

BMW of North America, Inc. v. Gore rests, in part, on the “understandable relationship” between a civil jury’s award of compensatory and punitive damages. Gore designates Due Process a protectant against excessive civil jury awards, in effect outmaneuvering the civil jury trial right. Gore identifies three guideposts to determine whether punitive damages are excessive: (1) the degree of reprehensibility of a defendant’s conduct; (2) the disparity between compensatory and punitive damages; and (3) the difference between punitive damages and civil penalties authorized or imposed in comparable cases.

This Article focuses on the second of Gore’s three guideposts, which examines the …

Quantum Hilbert Hotel, Václav Potoček, Filippo M. Miatto, Mohammad Mirhosseini, Omar S. Magaña-Loaiza, Andreas C. Liapis, Daniel K.L. Oi, Robert W. Boyd, John Jeffers Oct 2015

Quantum Hilbert Hotel, Václav Potoček, Filippo M. Miatto, Mohammad Mirhosseini, Omar S. Magaña-Loaiza, Andreas C. Liapis, Daniel K.L. Oi, Robert W. Boyd, John Jeffers

Faculty Publications

In 1924 David Hilbert conceived a paradoxical tale involving a hotel with an infinite number of rooms to illustrate some aspects of the mathematical notion of "infinity." In continuous-variable quantum mechanics we routinely make use of infinite state spaces: here we show that such a theoretical apparatus can accommodate an analog of Hilbert's hotel paradox. We devise a protocol that, mimicking what happens to the guests of the hotel, maps the amplitudes of an infinite eigenbasis to twice their original quantum number in a coherent and deterministic manner, producing infinitely many unoccupied levels in the process. We demonstrate the feasibility …

An In Vitro Assessment Of Liposomal Topotecan Simulating Metronomic Chemotherapy In Combination With Radiation In Tumor-Endothelial Spheroids, Amar Jyoti, Kyle Daniel Fugit, Pallavi Sethi, Ronald C. Mcgarry, Bradley D. Anderson, Meenakshi Upreti

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Low dose metronomic chemotherapy (LDMC) refers to prolonged administration of low dose chemotherapy designed to minimize toxicity and target the tumor endothelium, causing tumor growth inhibition. Topotecan (TPT) when administered at its maximum tolerated dose (MTD) is often associated with systemic hematological toxicities. Liposomal encapsulation of TPT enhances efficacy by shielding it from systemic clearance, allowing greater uptake and extended tissue exposure in tumors. Extended release of TPT from liposomal formulations also has the potential to mimic metronomic therapies with fewer treatments. Here we investigate potential toxicities of equivalent doses of free and actively loaded liposomal TPT (LTPT) and compare …

Analysis Of Efl Academic Writing In A Saudi University, Philline Mary Deraney

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This capstone analyzes 25 texts written by female university students in Saudi Arabia using the paradigm of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and genre-based writing focusing on the textual metafunction. The research methodology used was a description of the patterns that emerged in the students’ writing related to features of coherence and cohesion with basic frequency tables to support the qualitative data. The findings illustrate that while the texts showed some clear elements of coherence and cohesion and a partial understanding of the genre used in instruction, similar to international and regional studies, features of academic writing related to the textual …

Chemometric And Bioinformatic Analyses Of Cellular Biochemistry, Bradley Worley Oct 2015

Chemometric And Bioinformatic Analyses Of Cellular Biochemistry, Bradley Worley

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The amount of information collected and analyzed in biochemical and bioanalytical research has exploded over the last few decades, due in large part to the increasing availability of analytical instrumentation that yields information-rich spectra. Datasets from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Mass Spectrometry (MS), infrared (IR) or Raman spectroscopy may easily carry tens to hundreds of thousands of potentially correlated variables observed from only a few samples, making the application of classical statistical methods inappropriate, if not impossible. Drawing useful biochemical conclusions from these unique sources of data requires the use of specialized multivariate data handling techniques.

Unfortunately, proper implementation of …

"All The Lovely Ladies" And "Celestarium", Danika Paige Myers

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

These poems are part of a larger manuscript that explores the poet's lifelong engagement with knitting and sewing—and with the usually woman-centered communities that form around these crafts. The poems also respond to the cultural treatment of craft knowledge as frivolous or simple, highlighting the highly technical nature of such work and the mathematical, structural, and geometric knowledge required to successfully execute textile crafts. Densely referential, these poems invite the reader to play within their sounds and associations, making her own leaps and connections as she reads.

Short Term Strategies For Solving A Variant Of Period Vehicle Routing Problem, Hsiu-Li Hsu, Ching-Wu Chu, Chao-Sheng Wu Oct 2015

Short Term Strategies For Solving A Variant Of Period Vehicle Routing Problem, Hsiu-Li Hsu, Ching-Wu Chu, Chao-Sheng Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A company faces a variant of Period Vehicle Routing Problem (PVRP). Because of seasonal fluctuation in demand, the company outsources delivery to avoid maintaining excess vehicles or facing vehicle shortages. Customer orders can be classified into two groups, those that must be satisfied within two days, and those that must be fulfilled within three days. Currently, the company satisfies most orders the next day based on experience rather than any formal system. The objective of the studied company is to satisfy all received orders and minimize monthly transportation costs. This study proposes two short term strategies for the studied company. …

The Design Of A Hull Form With The Minimum Total Resistance, Bao-Ji Zhang, Ai-Qin Miao Oct 2015

The Design Of A Hull Form With The Minimum Total Resistance, Bao-Ji Zhang, Ai-Qin Miao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In order to obtain a hull form which exhibits low resistance and highly-efficient energy-saving performance, the overall resistance should be calculated as the sum of wave-making and viscous resistance, in which the total resistance corresponds to the objective function whereas the hull geometry parameters correspond to design variables. Apart from considering the limited conditions due to appropriate displacement, we further ponder over the boundary-layer viscous separation caused by additional constraints. We then proceed to apply the Nonlinear Programming Method (NLP) to determine the hull form with the minimum total resistance. This paper aims to optimize the streamlined design of the …

Numerical Study Of Flow Past Two Counter Rotating Cylinders Using Immersed Boundary Method, Ming-Jyh Chern, Farida Rehmawati Purnadiana, Dedy Zulhidayat Noor, Tzyy-Leng Horng, Shiu-Wu Chau, Ernest Odhiambo Oct 2015

Numerical Study Of Flow Past Two Counter Rotating Cylinders Using Immersed Boundary Method, Ming-Jyh Chern, Farida Rehmawati Purnadiana, Dedy Zulhidayat Noor, Tzyy-Leng Horng, Shiu-Wu Chau, Ernest Odhiambo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The adoption of a direct forcing immersed boundary numerical method on the uniform flow, at a moderate Reynolds number of 100, past a pair of two rotating circular cylinders placed side-by-side, is the core of the present study. A simplified yet novel approach is used to impose a virtual force as a source to the full incompressible two-dimensional NavierStokes equations, which are discretized by the finite volume method. The usage of a Cartesian grid that ensures minimal computational cost, is the salient feature of the applied immersed boundary approach. The gap between the two cylinders, and their rotational direction and …
