Science Education In Malaysia: Challenges In The 21stcentury, B. Sumintono

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This article analyses the development of science education in the Malaysian schools’ context. Several big changes have shiftedthe direction of science teaching to Malaysian students over the last fifty years. It started with curriculum reforms adopted by western countriesin the 1960s and 1970s. The introduction of a new curriculum with an underlying ‘child-centred’ philosophy was developed and implemented in the 1980s. The importance of information technology and English as medium of instructionwere characteristic in the late 1900s and 2000s. The impact of international study’s such as TIMSS and PISA paved a new direction for science education.Dynamics ofscience education in Malaysia …

Intellectual Property Law’S Plagiarism Fallacy, Gregory N. Mandel, Anne A. Fast, Kristina R. Olson Oct 2015

Intellectual Property Law’S Plagiarism Fallacy, Gregory N. Mandel, Anne A. Fast, Kristina R. Olson

BYU Law Review

Intellectual property law is caught in a widespread debate over whether it should serve incentive or natural rights objectives, and what the best means for achieving those ends are. This article reports a series of experiments revealing that these debates are actually orthogonal to how most users and many creators understand intellectual property law. The most common perception of intellectual property among the American public is that intellectual property law is designed to prevent plagiarism.

The plagiarism fallacy in intellectual property law is not an innocuous misperception. This fallacy likely helps explain pervasive illegal infringing activity on the Internet, common …

Local And Distributed Pib Accumulation Associated With Development Of Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew R. Brier, John E. Mccarthy, Tammie L.S. Benzinger, Ari Stern, Yi Su, Karl A. Friedrichsen, John C. Morris, Beau M. Ances, Andrei G. Vlassenko

Mathematics Faculty Research

Amyloid-beta plaques are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) that can be assessed by amyloid imaging (e.g., Pittsburgh B compound [PiB]) and summarized as a scalar value. Summary values may have clinical utility but are an average over many regions of interest, potentially obscuring important topography. This study investigates the longitudinal evolution of amyloid topographies in cognitively normal older adults who had normal (N = 131) or abnormal (N = 26) PiB scans at baseline. At 3 years follow-up, 16 participants with a previously normal PiB scan had conversion to PiB scans consistent with preclinical AD. We investigated the multivariate …

P-38 On The Riemannian Submersion Invariant, Yun Myung Oh Oct 2015

P-38 On The Riemannian Submersion Invariant, Yun Myung Oh

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

For a Riemannian submersion pi:Mn->Bbwith totally geodesic fibers, the submersion invariant (see attached abstract for equation) was introduced using the integrability tensor of the submersion. B. Y. Chen has provided the inequality on this invariant if the manifold M admits an isometric immersion into a Riemannian manifold Mm. Some of the recent results on this invariant are included with examples. This is a continuation of the work published in 2013.

See attached abstract for full equations.

Flexible Gating Of Contextual Influences In Natural Vision, Odelia Schwartz Oct 2015

Flexible Gating Of Contextual Influences In Natural Vision, Odelia Schwartz

Mathematics Colloquium Series

An appealing hypothesis suggests that neurons represent inputs in a coordinate system that is matched to the statistical structure of images in the natural environment. I discuss theoretical work on unsupervised learning of statistical regularities in natural images. In the model, Bayesian inference amounts to a generalized form of divisive normalization, a canonical computation that has been implicated in many neural areas. In our framework, divisive normalization is flexible: it is recruited only when the image is inferred to contain dependencies, and muted otherwise. I particularly focus on recent work in which we have applied this approach to understanding spatial …

Team Maggot: Designing A Better Bait Cup, Kristi Bugajski, Jordan Corsolini, Chris Henning, Tori Tamburrino

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Forensic entomology is the application of data from arthropods for investigative purposes in the criminal justice system. This study examined blow fly oviposition (egg laying) rates on chicken liver. The purpose of this experiment was to create a more effective bait cup for a higher percent yield in oviposition. The three main questions studied were: “does the weight of the liver affect oviposition?”, “does the location of the bait cup affect the occurrence of oviposition?” and, “is a foil or a plastic cup more attractive for oviposition?” A one way ANOVA showed a significant difference in the amount of oviposition …

Testing The D-Band Model For Propane Dehydrogenation On Sub-Nanometer Transition Metal Clusters, Stephen Place Oct 2015

Testing The D-Band Model For Propane Dehydrogenation On Sub-Nanometer Transition Metal Clusters, Stephen Place

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The d-band model has been useful in understanding how adsorbate molecules form bonds and interact with a transition metal catalyst surface. Recent research has shown that it is possible to apply the model to nanocluster catalysts on a support structure, but the d-band model has not yet been tested for sub-nanometer clusters. For this research, four atom transition metal clusters are used as catalysts to study bond formation in the dehydrogenation reaction of propane (C3H8) to propene (C3H6). Testing whether the d-band model applies for these clusters is a step toward developing possible descriptors of their catalytic activity. Our ultimate …

Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Kinetics Of Host-Guest Chemistry Abstract, Charles M. Sayger Oct 2015

Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Kinetics Of Host-Guest Chemistry Abstract, Charles M. Sayger

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Host-guest chemistry refers to the chemistry in which a host and a guest molecule come together to form an inclusion complex. These complexes are utilized in numerous fields, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and cosmetics. This study focuses on the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior of a guest molecule, Brooker's merocyanine, in β-cyclodextrin and its different derivatives (the hosts) at a fundamental level in an attempt to increase stability of the complexes. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to study the kinetic stability of Brooker's merocyanine's unique, energy dependent isomerization pathway inside the cavity of the host molecule in solution. It was found that when …

Coast-To-Interior Gradient In Recent Northwest Greenland Precipitation Trends (1952–2012), G J. Wong, E C. Osterberg, R L. Hawley, Z R. Courville, D G. Ferris, J A. Howley Oct 2015

Coast-To-Interior Gradient In Recent Northwest Greenland Precipitation Trends (1952–2012), G J. Wong, E C. Osterberg, R L. Hawley, Z R. Courville, D G. Ferris, J A. Howley

Dartmouth Scholarship

The spatial and temporal variability of precipitation on the Greenland ice sheet is an essential component of surface mass balance, which has been declining in recent years with rising temperatures. We present an analysis of precipitation trends in northwest (NW) Greenland (1952–2012) using instrumental (coastal meteorological station) and proxy records (snow pits and ice cores) to characterize the precipitation gradient from the coast to the ice sheet interior. Snow-pit-derived precipitation near the coast (1950–2000) has increased (~7% decade−1, p < 0.01) whereas there is no significant change observed in interior snow pits. This trend holds for 1981–2012, where calculated precipitation changes decrease in magnitude with increasing distance from the coast: 13% decade−1 (2.4 mm water equivalent (w.e.) decade−2) at coastal Thule air base (AB), 8.6% decade−1 (4.7 …

'At-Risk' Places: Inequaties In The Distribution Of Environmental Stressors And Prescription Rates Of Mental Health Medications In Glasgow, Scotland, Juliana A. Maantay, Andrew Maroko

Publications and Research

Using geospatial analytical methods, this study examines the association between one aspect of the built environment, namely, the concentration of vacant and derelict land (VDL), and the prevalence of mental health disorders (using the proxy variable of mental health medication prescription rates) in Glasgow, Scotland. This study builds on our previous research, which demonstrated the spatial correspondence between the locations of VDL in Glasgow and several physical health outcomes. Numerous studies of other locales have found similar correspondence between different elements of the built environment and various health outcomes. This is the first study of its kind to look at …

Force-Enhanced Atomic Refinement: Structural Modeling With Interatomic Forces In A Reverse Monte Carlo Approach Applied To Amorphous Si And Sio2, A. Pandey, Parthapratim Biswas, D. A. Drabold Oct 2015

Force-Enhanced Atomic Refinement: Structural Modeling With Interatomic Forces In A Reverse Monte Carlo Approach Applied To Amorphous Si And Sio2, A. Pandey, Parthapratim Biswas, D. A. Drabold

Faculty Publications

We introduce a structural modeling technique, called force-enhanced atomic refinement (FEAR). The technique incorporates interatomic forces in reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations for structural refinement by fitting experimental diffraction data using the conventional RMC algorithm, and minimizes the total energy and forces from an interatomic potential. We illustrate the usefulness of the approach by studying a−SiO2 and a−Si. The structural and electronic properties of the FEAR models agree well with experimental neutron and x-ray diffraction data and the results obtained from previous molecular dynamics simulations of a−SiO2 and a−Si. We have shown that the method is more efficient …

Cbfa 2015 Business And Human Flourishing - A Holistic Visual Model, John Visser

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

The reputation and, to a lesser degree the practice of business, perhaps more than those of any other institution, suffer from the kind of reductionism that is the stepchild of dualistic and secular thinking. Some business-bashing is deserved, since some businesses operate in a very opportunistic ways, but much of it can be traced back to a misunderstanding of what business is and does. Unfortunately, once we have been fooled into thinking that life can be compartmentalized, and that we can wall off religious beliefs from the rest of life, and that our economic lives belong on the secular side …

Rag-3d: A Search Tool For Rna 3d Substructures, Mai Zahran, Cigdem Sevim Bayrak, Shereef Elmetwaly, Tamar Schlick

Publications and Research

To address many challenges in RNA structure/function prediction, the characterization of RNA's modular architectural units is required. Using the RNA-As-Graphs (RAG) database, we have previously explored the existence of secondary structure (2D) submotifs within larger RNA structures. Here we present RAG-3D—a dataset of RNA tertiary (3D) structures and substructures plus a web-based search tool—designed to exploit graph representations of RNAs for the goal of searching for similar 3D structural fragments. The objects in RAG-3D consist of 3D structures translated into 3D graphs, cataloged based on the connectivity between their secondary structure elements. Each graph is additionally described in terms of …
