Interpolation Guided Compositional Verification, Shang-Wei Lin, Jun Sun, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Nov 2015

Interpolation Guided Compositional Verification, Shang-Wei Lin, Jun Sun, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model checking suffers from the state space explosion problem. Compositional verification techniques such as assume-guarantee reasoning (AGR) have been proposed to alleviate the problem. However, there are at least three challenges in applying AGR. Firstly, given a system M1 M2, how do we automatically construct and refine (in the presence of spurious counterexamples) an assumption A2, which must be an abstraction of M2? Previous approaches suggest to incrementally learn and modify the assumption through multiple invocations of a model checker, which could be often time consuming. Secondly, how do we keep the state space small when checking M1 A2 |= …

Automating The Performance Deviation Analysis For Multiple System Releases: An Evolutionary Study, Felipe Pinto, Uirá Kulesza, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a scenario-based approach for the evaluation of the quality attribute of performance, measured in terms of execution time (response time). The approach is implemented by a framework that uses dynamic analysis and repository mining techniques to provide an automated way for revealing potential sources of performance degradation of scenarios between releases of a software system. The approach defines four phases: (i) preparation – choosing the scenarios and preparing the target releases; (ii) dynamic analysis – determining the performance of scenarios and methods by calculating their execution time; (iii) degradation analysis – processing and comparing the results of …

Deep Multimodal Learning For Affective Analysis And Retrieval, Lei Pang, Shiai Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo Nov 2015

Deep Multimodal Learning For Affective Analysis And Retrieval, Lei Pang, Shiai Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social media has been a convenient platform for voicing opinions through posting messages, ranging from tweeting a short text to uploading a media file, or any combination of messages. Understanding the perceived emotions inherently underlying these user-generated contents (UGC) could bring light to emerging applications such as advertising and media analytics. Existing research efforts on affective computation are mostly dedicated to single media, either text captions or visual content. Few attempts for combined analysis of multiple media are made, despite that emotion can be viewed as an expression of multimodal experience. In this paper, we explore the learning of highly …

The Public Good In English Private School Governance, R Boyask Nov 2015

The Public Good In English Private School Governance, R Boyask

Plymouth Institute of Education

There exist some rare private schools that attempt to mitigate the anti-democratic qualities of the private schooling sector in England. This article reports on a study of private schools that aim to promote equality and participation through some aspects of their operations. It considers to what extent the governance structures within the schools support their aspirations and what this means for the public good more generally. English private schools are accountable to the state under The Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014 (hereafter Independent School Standards, 2014), corporate law and the majority are accountable under the Charities Act, which requires …

Building 3d-Printed Widgets To Incorporate Into Prototypes, David E. Brandt Nov 2015

Building 3d-Printed Widgets To Incorporate Into Prototypes, David E. Brandt

Theses and Dissertations

Creating interactive prototypes can be a long and difficult process. It requires expertise in various fields. Prior work in developing interactive prototypes minimize time required to make a prototype, but generally sacrifice fidelity for fluidity. Advances in 3D printing create new opportunities to prototype with greater fidelity and fluidity. We investigate the use of several kinds of sensors, including IR photo interrupters, IR photo reflectors, push button switches, and potentiometers, to create interactive prototypes. We first design a library of 3D printable interaction components, buttons, sliders, and knobs using those sensors then we develop software to transform interaction events into …

Cvic: Cluster Validation Using Instance-Based Confidences, Dean M. Lebaron Nov 2015

Cvic: Cluster Validation Using Instance-Based Confidences, Dean M. Lebaron

Theses and Dissertations

As unlabeled data becomes increasingly available, the need for robust data mining techniques increases as well. Clustering is a common data mining tool which seeks to find related, independent patterns in data called clusters. The cluster validation problem addresses the question of how well a given clustering fits the data set. We present CVIC (cluster validation using instance-based confidences) which assigns confidence scores to each individual instance, as opposed to more traditional methods which focus on the clusters themselves. CVIC trains supervised learners to recreate the clustering, and instances are scored based on output from the learners which corresponds to …

Data Selection Using Topic Adaptation For Statistical Machine Translation, Hitokazu Matsushita Nov 2015

Data Selection Using Topic Adaptation For Statistical Machine Translation, Hitokazu Matsushita

Theses and Dissertations

Statistical machine translation (SMT) requires large quantities of bitexts (i.e., bilingual parallel corpora) as training data to yield good quality translations. While obtaining a large amount of training data is critical, the similarity between training and test data also has a significant impact on SMT performance. Many SMT studies define data similarity in terms of domain-overlap, and domains are defined to be synonymous with data sources. Consequently, the SMT community has focused on domain adaptation techniques that augment small (in-domain) datasets with large datasets from other sources (hence, out-of-domain, per the definition). However, many training datasets consist of topically diverse …

Academic And Peer Status In The Mathematical Life Stories Of Students, Carol Ann Wise Nov 2015

Academic And Peer Status In The Mathematical Life Stories Of Students, Carol Ann Wise

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematics students often define themselves by their grades, test scores, how they compare to other people, how comfortable they feel in mathematics class, and so on. These experiences are all part of a student's mathematical life story. Students assume positions with particular rights and duties for themselves and for the actors in the stories they tell. Those positions reflect certain types and levels of status. Those types and levels of status have been shown to either inhibit or open a student's access to learning mathematics. Thus, a student's status in mathematics education is an issue of equity. Mathematics educators and …

Unfolding Trees & Symmetrically-Associated Graphs, Kaelyn Flowerday Nov 2015

Unfolding Trees & Symmetrically-Associated Graphs, Kaelyn Flowerday

University Honors Theses

An unfolding tree is an object reflecting the connectivity properties of a vector-labelled graph. First introduced in the context of theoretical computer science as a way of describing information flow in a neural net model of graph-structured data, unfolding trees have remained unexplored within graph theory. They give rise to an equivalence relation on the vertices of a graph, one which describes the connective environments of vertices but is not reducible to automorphism group orbits. This thesis formalizes unfolding trees and investigates their properties along with the implications of this vertex relation. This leads to the graph property of symmetric-association; …

Extending The Teknomo-Fernandez Background Image Generation Algorithm On The Hsv Colour Space, Patricia Angela R. Abu, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr Nov 2015

Extending The Teknomo-Fernandez Background Image Generation Algorithm On The Hsv Colour Space, Patricia Angela R. Abu, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

Background subtraction, a procedure required in many video analysis applications such as object tracking , is dependent on the model background image. One efficient algorithm for background image generation is the Teknomo-Fernandez (TF) Algorithm, which uses modal values and a tournament-like strategy to produce a good background image very quickly. A previous study showed that the TF algorithm can be extended from the original 3 frames per tournament (T F 3) to T F 5 and T F 7, resulting in increased accuracies at a cost of increased processing times. In this study, we explore extending the T F 3, …

Low-Shield Volcanism: A Comparison Of Volcanoes On Syria Planum, Mars And Snake River Plain, Idaho, Amanda Olivia Henderson Nov 2015

Low-Shield Volcanism: A Comparison Of Volcanoes On Syria Planum, Mars And Snake River Plain, Idaho, Amanda Olivia Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

Volcanoes are key indicators of a planet's internal structure, mechanics, and evolutionary history. Consequently, understanding the types and ages of volcanoes on a planet's surface is an important endeavor. In an attempt to better understand the relationship between morphometry and volcanic processes, we compared low-shield volcanoes on Syria Planum, Mars, with basaltic shields of the eastern Snake River Plain. We used 133 volcanoes on Syria Planum that are covered by Mars Orbiting Laser Altimeter (MOLA) and High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) elevation data and 246 eSRP shields covered by the National Elevation Dataset (NED) for this comparison. Shields on Syria …

Effect Of Sm Content On Energy Product Of Rapidly Quenched And Oriented Smco5 Ribbons, Wenyong Zhang, Xingzhong Li, Shah R. Valloppilly Nov 2015

Effect Of Sm Content On Energy Product Of Rapidly Quenched And Oriented Smco5 Ribbons, Wenyong Zhang, Xingzhong Li, Shah R. Valloppilly

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The Sm-content dependence of phase composition, anisotropy, and other magnetic properties of Sm1+δCo5 (δ ≤ 0.12) ribbons melt spun at 10 m/s has been studied. The samples consist of hexagonal SmCo5 grains whose c axes are preferentially aligned along the long direction of the ribbon. The lattice parameter a and the cell volume (V) increase with increasing Sm content δ, whereas c decreases. Sm addition appears to improve the degree of the preferred orientation of the c-axis and to increase the mean grain size, which weakens the effective intergranular exchange …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Microbial activity is one of the most important processes to mediate the flux of organic carbon from the ocean surface to the seafloor. However, little is known about the microorganisms that underpin this key step of the global carbon cycle in the deep oceans. Here we present genomic and transcriptomic evidence that five ubiquitous archaeal groups actively use proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids and lipids as sources of carbon and energy at depths ranging from 800 to 4,950 m in hydrothermal vent plumes and pelagic background seawater across three different ocean basins. Genome-enabled metabolic reconstructions and gene expression patterns show that …

Understanding Student Evaluations : A Black Faculty Perspective., Armon R. Perry, Sherri L. Wallace, Sharon E. Moore, Gwendolyn D. Perry-Burney

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Student evaluations of faculty teaching are critical components to the evaluation of faculty performance. These evaluations are used to determine teaching effectiveness and they influence tenure and promotion decisions. Although they are designed as objective assessments of teaching performance, extraneous factors, including the instructors’ race, can affect the composition and educational atmosphere at colleges and universities. In this reflection, we briefly review some literature on the use and utility of student evaluations and present narratives from social work faculty in which students’ evaluation contained perceived racial bias.

How Algorithmic Trading Undermines Efficiency In Capital Markets, Yesha Yadav Nov 2015

How Algorithmic Trading Undermines Efficiency In Capital Markets, Yesha Yadav

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article argues that the rise of algorithmic trading undermines efficient capital allocation in securities markets. It is a bedrock assumption in theory that securities prices reveal how effectively public companies utilize capital. This conventional wisdom rests on the straightforward premise that prices reflect available information about a security and that investors look to prices to decide where to invest and whether their capital is being productively used. Unsurprisingly, regulation relies pervasively on prices as a proxy for the allocative efficiency of investor capital.

Algorithmic trading weakens the ability of prices to function as a window into allocative efficiency. This …

Predicting Consumer Demand Responses To Carbon Labels, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Sharon A. Shewmake, Abigail Okrent, Lanka Thabrew

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Providing carbon footprint labels for all food products is a daunting and potentially infeasible project. Knowing how consumers substitute away from high carbon goods and what they choose as substitutes is essential for understanding which goods are likely to result in meaningful reductions in carbon emissions. This paper proposes a model to systematically estimate how consumers will respond to information from a carbon footprint label. Our model uses consumers' value of their individual carbon footprint with own- and cross-price elasticities of demand data on carbon emissions from life cycle analysis to simulate shifts in consumer demand for 42 food products …

The Homo Nodal Arrangement In Polychromophoric Molecules And Assemblies Controls The Interchromophoric Electronic Coupling, Marat R. Talipov, Tushar Navale, Rajendra Rathore Nov 2015

The Homo Nodal Arrangement In Polychromophoric Molecules And Assemblies Controls The Interchromophoric Electronic Coupling, Marat R. Talipov, Tushar Navale, Rajendra Rathore

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Triptycenes spontaneously assemble into two-dimensional networks in which long-range charge transport is facilitated by the extensive electronic coupling through the triptycene framework (intramolecularly) and by cofacial π-stacking (intermolecularly). While designing and synthesizing next-generation triptycenes containing polyaromatic chromophores, the electronic coupling amongst the chromophores was observed to be highly dependent on the nature and position of the substituents. Herein, we demonstrate using hexaalkoxytriptycenes that the electronic coupling amongst the chromophores is switched on and off by a simple repositioning of the substituents, which alters the nodal arrangement of the HOMOs of the individual chromophores. A visual inspection of the HOMOs can …

Determination Of Nanoparticle Localisation Within Subcellular Organelles In Vitro Using Raman Spectroscopy, Esen Efeoglu, Mark Keating, Jennifer Mcintyre, Alan Casey, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Ease of sample preparation, narrow spectral bandwidth and minimal influence from water are features of Raman spectroscopy which make it a powerful, label-free way to study a wide range of biological structures and phenomena. In this context, given the concerns over their toxicology arising from their increased production and use, evaluation of nanoparticle uptake and localisation in biological systems and determination of the mechanisms of subcellular interaction and trafficking can provide long-term solutions for nanotoxicology, and potential strategies for nanomedicine. In this study, Raman spectroscopy is explored to monitor the sequential trafficking of nanoparticles through subcellular organelles in-vitro and to …
