Habitat Selection Of Wolverines: A Geospatial Analysis Of Wolverine Movements In Southwest Montana, Bryn Karabensh Nov 2015

Habitat Selection Of Wolverines: A Geospatial Analysis Of Wolverine Movements In Southwest Montana, Bryn Karabensh

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Wolverine research in the contiguous United States is not abundant and understanding of the ecology of this species is not fully understood in this ecosystem. Specifically lacking in research is data regarding wolverine movements. This paucity of data and analysis inhibits the ability to effectively develop and implement conservation and management strategies. This paper seeks to identify patterns and habitat preferences of wolverines with respect to their movements. Specifically, do they avoid roads and clear-cuts zones from timber harvest and do they display a preference to topography features during movements? Using GPS locations of wolverines a regression analysis was applied. …

Do Abstract Ideas Have The Need, The Need For Speed?: An Examination Of Abstract Ideas After Alice, Maria R. Sinatra Nov 2015

Do Abstract Ideas Have The Need, The Need For Speed?: An Examination Of Abstract Ideas After Alice, Maria R. Sinatra

Fordham Law Review

Imagine you invented a way to perform mathematical calculations all over the world simultaneously. Now, imagine that you cannot patent your invention because it was compared to, and found to contain, the same idea as an abacus. This scenario was the outcome of Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International.

In coming to its decision in Alice, the U.S. Supreme Court adopted a two-part test that it had previously utilized to analyze the patentability of laws of nature to determine whether the patent at issue met the subject matter patentability standards of § 101 of the Patent Act. Determining …

Hypobranching Induced By Both Environmental Antioxidants And Ros Metabolism Gene Knockouts In Neurospora Crassa, Michael K. Watters, Jacob Yablonowski, Tayler Grashel, Hamzah Abduljabar

Biology Faculty Publications

Previous work suggested a role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism on branch density, the statistical distribution of physical distances between branch points along a growing hypha in Neurospora. Here we report the results of experiments designed to ask more generally about the relationship between ROS and branch density by examining the branching effects of selected ROS metabolism gene knockout mutants as well as the impact on branching of exogenously added antioxidants. In all ROS metabolism mutants tested, growth was shown to branch less densely (hypobranching) when grown at lower temperatures, a shift not observed in the wild-type. Interestingly, this …

Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) is an invasive weed that causes serious issues for rivers, lakes, and other reservoirs around the world, although it can be an excellent source for bioactive compounds such as phytosterols and some steroids found in many plants. In this study, water hyacinth samples from both Durango and Distrito Federal in Mexico were collected. Ascendant extracts (cyclohexane, hexane, acetone, and methanol) from their leaves, stems, and roots were analyzed. Using boron trifluoride (similar to 10% [similar to 1.3 M] in 1-butanol), all extracts were derivatized. Twenty-four derivatized samples were analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method. …

Secchi Disk Depth: A New Theory And Mechanistic Model For Underwater Visibility, Zhongping Lee, Shaoling Shang, Chuanmin Hu, Keping Du, Alan Weidemann, Weilin Hou, Junfang Lin, Gong Lin

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Secchi disk depth (ZSD) is a measure of water transparency, whose interpretation has wide applications from diver visibility to studies of climate change. This transparency has been explained in the past 60 + years with the underwater visibility theory, the branch of the general visibility theory for visual ranging in water. However, through a thorough review of the physical processes involved in visual ranging in water, we show that this theory may not exactly represent the sighting of a Secchi disk by a human eye. Further, we update the Law of Contrast Reduction, a key concept in visibility …

Serum Proteins Enhance Dispersion Stability And Influence The Cytotoxicity And Dosimetry Of Zno Nanoparticles In Suspension And Adherent Cancer Cell Models, Catherine B. Anders, Jordan J. Chess, Denise G. Wingett, Alex Punnoose

Biomedical Research Institute Publications and Presentations

Agglomeration and sedimentation of nanoparticles (NPs) within biological solutions is a major limitation in their use in many downstream applications. It has been proposed that serum proteins associate with the NP surface to form a protein corona that limits agglomeration and sedimentation. Here, we investigate the effect of fetal bovine serum (FBS) proteins on the dispersion stability, dosimetry, and NP-induced cytotoxicity of cationic zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) synthesized via forced hydrolysis with a core size of 10 nm. Two different in vitro cell culture models, suspension and adherent, were evaluated by comparing a phosphate buffered saline (PBS) nZnO dispersion (nZnO/PBS) …

Influence Of Decentralized Demand Driven Policy Of Teacher Recruitment In Kinango Sub County-Kenya, Kuphunza Bakari Makungu

Master of Education

The introduction of the decentralized demand driven policy of teacher recruitment in Kenya in 2001 was hoped to enhance equitable access to qualified teachers in all public schools of the republic of Kenya. The policy’s main target was the disadvantaged areas of the nation. This was influenced by the government’s inability to continue employing teachers through the centralized supply driven system and the realization of the need to employ teachers for the needy schools even though. What is the influence of the implementation of the decentralized demand driven policy of teacher recruitment in the schools of Kinango Sub County? This …

Master of Education

This study examines the roles of written feedback in enhancing students‟ mathematics learning in Tanzanian lower secondary classrooms. Black and Wiliam (1998) pointed out that improved learning occurs when teachers use assessment evidence to establish skills and knowledge possessed by students. This can be achieved through giving meaningful feedback to students (Chappuis & Chappuis, 2007). An intervention study was conducted; the participants were the teachers and 7 students each from one form one and one form two class. Before the intervention, students filled out a questionnaire and the teachers were interviewed. The intervention, which included participant observation, involved the researcher …

Exploration Of Mathematics Tutors’ Provision Of Formative Feedback To Student Teachers: Case Of A Government Teachers’ College In Tanzania, Wambura Marwa

Master of Education

Formative feedback plays a vital role on improving students’ learning abilities and modifying learning behaviours. Teacher education programme must provide an opportunity to the teachers to recognize the significance of formative feedback and incorporate it in their practice (Heritage, 2007). In this sense tutors in teachers in pre service teacher education are professionals who could ensure that student teachers develop relevant knowledge and skills in relation to formative feedback. This study aimed at exploring if and how mathematics tutors provide formative feedback to student teachers in one government teachers college in Tanzania. Four data collection methods were employed; interviews, observation, …

Promoting Public Health In The Context Of The “Obesity Epidemic”: False Starts And Promising New Directions, T. Mann, A. J. Tomiyama, Andrew Ward Nov 2015

Promoting Public Health In The Context Of The “Obesity Epidemic”: False Starts And Promising New Directions, T. Mann, A. J. Tomiyama, Andrew Ward

Psychology Faculty Works

In the battle to combat obesity rates in the United States, several misconceptions have dominated policy initiatives. We address those misconceptions, including the notion that restrictive diets lead to long-term weight loss, that stigmatizing obesity is an effective strategy for promoting weight reduction, and that weight and physical health should be considered synonymous with one another. In offering correctives to each of these points, we draw on psychological science to suggest new policies that could be enacted at both the local and national levels. Instead of policies that rely solely on individual willpower, which is susceptible to failure, we recommend …

Streambed And Water Profile Response To In-Channel Restoration Structures In A Laboratory Meandering Stream, Bangshuai Han, Hong-Hanh Chu, Theodore A. Endreny Nov 2015

Streambed And Water Profile Response To In-Channel Restoration Structures In A Laboratory Meandering Stream, Bangshuai Han, Hong-Hanh Chu, Theodore A. Endreny

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In-channel structures are often installed in alluvial rivers during restoration to steer currents, but they also modify the streambed morphology and water surface profile, and alter hydraulic gradients driving ecologically important hyporheic exchange. Although river features before and after restoration need to be compared, few studies have collected detailed observations to facilitate this comparison. We created a laboratory mobile-bed alluvial meandering river and collected detailed measurements in the highly sinuous meander before and after installation of in-channel structures, which included one cross vane and six J-hooks situated along 1 bar unit. Measurements of streambed and water surface elevation with sub-millimeter …

Vegetable Production Guide For Commercial Growers, 2016-17, Shubin Saha, Emily Pfeufer, Ricardo Bessin, Shawn Wright, John Strang

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Successful vegetable production generally requires the grower to make daily decisions regarding pest management, irrigation, and cultural practices. Would-be growers unwilling to make serious investments of time (and money) should not attempt to expand beyond a space at the farmers’ market. It is important for vegetable growers to have a market outlet for their product before they choose to start production. Good marketing plans start with the customer and work backward to production. Potential growers should first determine exactly what buyers want, how they want it, and when they want it. They then must determine how these crops should be …

The Effect Of Teachers’ Qualification On Children’S Learning Outcome In Early Childhood Education In Northern Uganda, Brenda Apeta

Master of Education

This study examined the effect of teachers’ qualification on the children’s learning outcome in nursery schools in Northern Uganda. Twenty lessons were observed from five teachers in two rural nursery schools. The findings indicated that three of the teachers were of low qualifications while the remaining two had no qualifications in ECD. The teachers’ low qualification or the lack of it, affected children’s learning outcome in such a way that the untrained teachers to a greater extent used classroom practices that encouraged rote learning as compared to the qualified teachers. The teachers’ perception on how their qualification shaped their classroom …

General Formalism For Singly-Thermostated Hamiltonian Dynamics, John D. Ramshaw Nov 2015

General Formalism For Singly-Thermostated Hamiltonian Dynamics, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A general formalism is developed for constructing modified Hamiltonian dynamical systems which preserve a canonical equilibrium distribution by adding a time evolution equation for a single additional thermostat variable. When such systems are ergodic, canonical ensemble averages can be computed as dynamical time averages over a single trajectory. Systems of this type were unknown until their recent discovery by Hoover and colleagues. The present formalism should facilitate the discovery, construction, and classification of other such systems by encompassing a wide class of them within a single unified framework. This formalism includes both canonical and generalized Hamiltonian systems in a state …

Empirical Line Lists And Absorption Cross Sections For Methane At High Temperatures, R. J. Hargreaves, P. F. Bernath, J. Bailey, M. Dulick

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Hot methane is found in many "cool" sub-stellar astronomical sources including brown dwarfs and exoplanets, as well as in combustion environments on Earth. We report on the first high-resolution laboratory absorption spectra of hot methane at temperatures up to 1200 K. Our observations are compared to the latest theoretical spectral predictions and recent brown dwarf spectra. The expectation that millions of weak absorption lines combine to form a continuum, not seen at room temperature, is confirmed. Our high-resolution transmittance spectra account for both the emission and absorption of methane at elevated temperatures. From these spectra, we obtain an empirical line …

Lithologic discontinuity identification can be arduous and erroneous in instances where distinct morphological differences between parent materials are absent. Often, investigators must wait for laboratory data to help differentiate parent materials via physicochemical properties. This study used visible near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (VisNIR DRS) and portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) spectrometry for establishing parent material differentia more quickly. Ten pedons containing 135 samples were scanned in situ in the United States, Italy, and Hungary, morphologically described by trained pedologists, then sampled for standard laboratory characterization. Compared with laboratory data and/or morphologically described discontinuities, PXRF data were associated with large, abrupt changes …

Fullerene-containing materials have the ability to store and release electrical energy. Therefore, fullerenes may ultimately find use in high-voltage equipment devices or as super capacitors for high electric energy storage due to this ease of manipulating their excellent dielectric properties and their high volume resistivity. A series of structured fullerene (C60) polymer nanocomposites were assembled using the thiol-ene click reaction, between alkyl thiols and allyl functionalized C60 derivatives. The resulting high-density C60-urethane-thiol-ene (C60-Thiol-Ene) networks possessed excellent mechanical properties. These novel networks were characterized using standard techniques, including infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry …
