Forget Me Not: An Exhibition –And– Creative Reuse: How Rescued Materials Transformed My A/R/Tographic Practice: An Exegesis, Susan Girak
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis, comprising of a written exegesis, solo exhibition and an artist book, emerged from research undertaken by an artist-researcher-teacher. For that reason, a/r/tography was the overarching methodology used, incorporating a bricolage of methods to address a multifaceted study undertaken in two settings: a primary school classroom and an artist’s studio. A/r/tography is a multilayered interdisciplinary Arts education research methodology that correlates well with my expertise as a primary Visual Arts specialist. The methodology allowed me to immerse myself in both teaching and the artmaking process, as ways of gaining a deeper understanding of Visual Arts pedagogy. The purpose of …

Judging Dread: A Quantitative Investigation Of Affect, Psychometric Dread And Risk Consequence, Melvyn Griffiths
Judging Dread: A Quantitative Investigation Of Affect, Psychometric Dread And Risk Consequence, Melvyn Griffiths
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Risk is generally understood as a product of the likelihood and consequence of an event. However, the way in which estimations of consequences are formed is unclear due to the complexities of human perception. In particular, the influence of Affect, defined as positive or negative qualities subjectively assigned to stimuli, may skew risk consequence judgements. Thus a clearer understanding of the role of Affect in risk consequence estimations has significant implications for risk management, risk communication and policy formulation.
In the Psychometric tradition of risk perception, Affect has become almost synonymous with the concept of Dread, despite Dread being measured …
Secure Portable Execution And Storage Environments: A Capability To Improve Security For Remote Working, Peter James
Secure Portable Execution And Storage Environments: A Capability To Improve Security For Remote Working, Peter James
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Remote working is a practice that provides economic benefits to both the employing organisation and the individual. However, evidence suggests that organisations implementing remote working have limited appreciation of the security risks, particularly those impacting upon the confidentiality and integrity of information and also on the integrity and availability of the remote worker’s computing environment. Other research suggests that an organisation that does appreciate these risks may veto remote working, resulting in a loss of economic benefits. With the implementation of high speed broadband, remote working is forecast to grow and therefore it is appropriate that improved approaches to managing …

The Use Of Ontologies In Forensic Analysis Of Smartphone Content, Mohammed Alzaabi, Thomas Anthony Martin, Kamal Taha, Andy Jones
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Digital forensics investigators face a constant challenge in keeping track with evolving technologies such as smartphones. Analyzing the contents of these devices to infer useful information is becoming more time consuming as the volume and complexity of data are increasing. Typically, such analysis is undertaken by a human, which makes it dependent on the experience of the investigator. To overcome such impediments, an automated technique can be utilized in order to aid the investigator to quickly and efficiently analyze the data. In this paper, we propose F-DOS; a set of ontologies that models the smartphone content for the purpose of …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Major challenges still exist in the cost-competitive production of cellulosic ethanol. Lignocellulose deconstruction using physiochemical pretreatments continues to be the most efficient way to remove lignin and expose cellulose for enzyme-mediated sugar reduction. Recent interest in the development of “value-added” lignin co-products and the desire to reduce the use of hazardous materials has prompted a resurgence of interest in alternative lignocellulosic feedstock and research into environment-friendly biological pretreatments. This article provides an overview of bioethanol processes and economics, standard and alternative feedstocks, physiochemical and biological pretreatments, and lignin chemistry. The chemistry and mode of action of ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzymes …

Effects Of Sex And Mycorrhizal Fungi On Gas Exchange In The Dioecious Salt Marsh Grass Distichlis Spicata, Kassandra Reuss-Schmidt, Todd N. Rosenstiel, Sally R. Rogers, Allie G. Simpson, Sarah M. Eppley
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Premise of research. In dioecious plant species, males and females often differ in physiology, and mycorrhizal fungal relationships are likely to influence these differences. However, few data are available on the potential role of mycorrhizal fungi in altering sex-specific physiology and population sex ratios of dioecious plant species.
Methodology. In this study, we measured leaf gas exchange in a multifactorial greenhouse experiment with and without mycorrhizal fungal additions and under field conditions in Distichlis spicata, a dioecious C4 salt marsh grass, displaying extreme spatial sex ratio variation.
Pivotal results. We found a significant interaction between gas exchange, plant sex, and …

OES Faculty Publications
Marine Synechococcus are some of the most diverse and ubiquitous phytoplankton, and iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient that limits productivity in many parts of the ocean. To investigate how coastal and oceanic Atlantic Synechococcus strains acclimate to Fe availability, we compared the growth, photophysiology, and quantitative proteomics of two Synechococcus strains from different Fe regimes. Synechococcus strain WH8102, from a region in the southern Sargasso Sea that receives substantial dust deposition, showed impaired growth and photophysiology as Fe declined, yet used few acclimation responses. Coastal WH8020, from the dynamic, seasonally variable New England shelf, displayed a multitiered, hierarchical cascade …

Robotic Marriage And The Law, Mark Goldfeder, Yosef Razin
Scholarly Works
The United States, and the world at large, is in the midst of a family law revolution that will fundamentally change our very conception of family. Ethical challenges to age-old ideas have prompted people to ask foundational questions, such as how and why our most important personal relationships evolved. In a world where same-sex marriage has been legalized, it is only natural to wonder who marriage may include in the future. This essay explores the question of whether a human and a robot could ever legally marry in the United States. Through a thought experiment, it examines the legal and …

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research
The Shawangunk Ridge in the lower mid-Hudson Valley extends from the vicinity of Rosendale through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Within the first thirty miles can be found five “sky lakes”: Mohonk, Minnewaska, Awosting, Mud Pond and Maratanza. Since these lakes occur on the top of the ridge they have no drainage basin. Here we report on the pH and other abiotic factors that impact the aquatic fauna of Mohonk Lake. The pH of the lake is 7 near the surface. Lake Minnewaska’s pH increased from 4 to 6 in the last twenty years. The pH of the other …
Puzzles Of Proportion And The Reasonable Military Commander: Reflections On The Law, Ethics, And Geopolitics Of Proportionality, Robert D. Sloane
Puzzles Of Proportion And The Reasonable Military Commander: Reflections On The Law, Ethics, And Geopolitics Of Proportionality, Robert D. Sloane
Faculty Scholarship
This article offers modest reflections on jus in bello proportionality. It suggests that the law of armed conflict (LOAC) build on the only consensus legal standard that exists: that of the good-faith reasonable military commander. The difficulty — here, as with any reasonableness standard — is to identify factors that realistically can, and legally should, guide adherence to it and to consider the objective and subjective dimensions of judgments under the standard. Part II scrutinizes the content and status of Additional Protocol I’s (API) canonical definition of proportionality. It analyzes its text and context to bring out the extent to …

This research is focused on the modeling and optimization of the crude oil scheduling problem in order to generate the most appropriate schedule for the unloading, charging, blending, and movement of crude oil in a refinery, which means obtaining the schedule that generates the lowest costs. Uncertainty, which is often present in these types of optimization problems, is also analyzed and taken into account for the resolution of crude oil scheduling problem. A comprehensive novel model is proposed to describe the upper level crude oil scheduling problem, generate an optimal solution for the mentioned problem, and allow integration with the …
Excluding Two Minors Of The Petersen Graph, Adam Beau Ferguson
Excluding Two Minors Of The Petersen Graph, Adam Beau Ferguson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, we begin with a brief survey of the Petersen graph and its role in graph theory. We will then develop an alternative decomposition to clique sums for 3-connected graphs, called T-sums. This decomposition will be used in Chapter 2 to completely characterize those graphs which have no P_3 minor, where P_3 is a graph with 7 vertices, 12 edges, and is isomorphic to the graph created by contracting three edges of a perfect matching of the Petersen Graph. In Chapter 3, we determine the structure of any large internally 4-connected graph which has no P_2 minor, where …

Parent Involvement And Science Achievement During Students’ Transition Years From Elementary School To Middle School: A Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis Using Ecls-K, Letao Sun
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation
Transitioning from elementary school to middle school can be a difficult time for many adolescents. It is a period often correlated with a decline in students’ academic achievement, perceptions of performance, potential, and value in schooling. Research has shown evidence that parents’ involvement in their children’s education significantly influences children’s academic achievement. However, there are many conflicting findings regarding this relationship.
The primary purpose of this study is to extend existing research on academic achievement by examining the causal relationship between parent involvement and science achievement during the transition years, using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class …
Exploring The Significance Of Social Influences On Epistemic Beliefs, David D. Gatsos
Exploring The Significance Of Social Influences On Epistemic Beliefs, David D. Gatsos
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation
This document proceeds from an interest in applying theories of student development to higher education policy. The process sobered me from idealistic expectations of profundity to focus on adding relevant building blocks to the established foundation of epistemological development. Progress was found in moving toward clarifying what happens during the change process as a student moves from naïve to mature beliefs. Lead forth out of this ambiguity, unearthing the nature of social influences as a player in the developmental process became a target of this work.
Moving toward a deeper understanding of how concepts of attachment, naiveté, authority, and potential …

Rise Of The Administrator In Higher Education: Focus On Professionalization Of The Registrar At The University Of Kentucky From 1910 To 1937, Nancy D. Taylor
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation
The decades following the Civil War saw a tremendous growth in the number of colleges and universities, both public and private, due in large part to funds provided by federal legislation under the Morrill Act of 1862 and a surge in philanthropy on the part of wealthy industrialists. In the early colleges and universities, administrations were typically run by the president alone. With increased enrollment and the demand for expanded services, one man could no longer handle all the administrative functions, and thus was born the administrative professional in higher education. Due to the increased demand for record-keeping, one of …
Success After Failure: An Examination Of Credit Recovery Options And Their Effect On College- And Career-Readiness, Kathryn B. Johnson
Success After Failure: An Examination Of Credit Recovery Options And Their Effect On College- And Career-Readiness, Kathryn B. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education
More than ever before, educators and researchers are keeping a keen eye on student college- and career-readiness. The widely adopted Common Core State Standards were written with the explicit goal of helping students to be college- or career-ready by the time they graduate from high school. However, many students experience setbacks, such as course failure, within their educational career placing them at risk for not reaching this goal. Because the ACT can predict student success in college, states often use benchmark scores from the exam to measure student college- and career-readiness. A student who fails to learn fundamental concepts in …

Data analysis was accomplished for both the prompts, writing pieces and the WSPS scores. …
A Study Of Teacher And Principal Perceptions Of Professional Learning Communities, Jeffrey C. Stamper
A Study Of Teacher And Principal Perceptions Of Professional Learning Communities, Jeffrey C. Stamper
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies
Throughout the post-modern or post-professional age (2000-present), high stakes testing and accountability of public schools forced educational organizations to improve their professional practices to work collaboratively (Little, 2003). As a result, professional learning communities (PLCs) have been found to improve student learning among educational organizations (DuFour, 2007; Hord, 2004). During the past 20 years, a significant amount of research has been conducted, which describes PLCs in the educational settings (Vescio, Ross, & Adams, 2008) Researchers note a lack of empirical research which focuses on teacher and principal perceptions of PLCs (Hord & Sommers, 2008).
The central focus of this study …
Muscular And Neural Contributions To Postactivation Potentiation, Brian Joseph Wallace
Muscular And Neural Contributions To Postactivation Potentiation, Brian Joseph Wallace
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Muscle performance is partially a consequence of its recent contractile history. Postactivation potentiation (PAP) can occur after muscle contractions and leads to enhanced neuromuscular performance. The purpose of this dissertation was to explain the relationship between muscle factors (twitch potentiation, TP) and neural factors (reflex potentiation, RP) contributing to overall PAP following a non-fatiguing volitional muscle contraction. The tibial nerves of fifteen resistance trained volunteers (eleven men, four women) were stimulated intermittently at supramaximal (Mmax) and submaximal (Hmax) intensities for 20 minutes on separate days under three conditions: rest (Control); after a after a 10 second maximum voluntary isometric contraction …

Parametric Study Of Rocking Shallow Foundations Under Seismic Excitation, Benjamin I. Herdrich
Parametric Study Of Rocking Shallow Foundations Under Seismic Excitation, Benjamin I. Herdrich
Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports
Conventional design of structures relies on incorporating a certain level of inelastic deformation into select components to provide seismic energy dissipation, while ensuring the foundation remains relatively stationary. However, this inelasticity comes at the cost of severe damage to the structure, which often is no longer suitable to occupancy after a seismic event. In contrast with conventional structures, structures with rocking foundations shift the ductility demands away from the structure itself, and onto the underlying soil, which may result in less damage and greater stability. The purpose of this study is to explore the behavior and performance of a simple …
Three Year Assessment Of Nearshore Crude Oil Contamination In The Gulf Of Mexico Using Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia Patronus) As An Indicator Species: Menhaden Watch, Gregory Michael Olson
Three Year Assessment Of Nearshore Crude Oil Contamination In The Gulf Of Mexico Using Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia Patronus) As An Indicator Species: Menhaden Watch, Gregory Michael Olson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Approximately 4.9 million barrels of crude oil along with natural gas were released into the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) from April to July 2010 (Deepwater Horizon, DWH, spill). Impacts of this magnitude seldom occur in the GoM (Ixtoc I was the last spill close to this magnitude occurring in 1979), and one cannot predict when they will happen. Major constituents of concern found in crude oil are Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), which often have low volatility that allows for prolonged existence in the environment. PAHs are compounds of concern according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), with one …

Stress, Anxiety Symptomology, And The Need For Student Support Services For University Freshmen Of First-Generation Status, Low-Ses Backgrounds, And Those Registered With Disabilities, Kelly Dale Allison
LSU Master's Theses
Three populations of concern for professional social workers in higher educational settings include first-generation college students (FGCSs), students from low socio-economic (low-SES) backgrounds, and students with disabilities. As the national demand for degrees in higher education rises both socially and economically, the push for young adults’ postsecondary success becomes increasingly crucial. In college and university settings, a significant portion of students may be classified as FGCSs, low-SES, or may be registered with a disability. Examining these vulnerable populations within higher education settings, particularly regarding stress and anxiety symptomology, can help social workers recognize the social, developmental, and academic inhibitions that …
