Introducing New Engineering Students To Mechanical Concepts Through An “Energy Cube” Project, Shannon Chance, Micheal O'Flaherty, Fionnuala Farrell, Christopher Montague

Conference papers

The objective of this paper is to describe a problem based learning module, called the “Energy Cube”, offered by Dublin Institute of Technology that is designed to teach mechanical, building services and manufacturing engineering concepts to first year engineering students.

The Energy Cube project gives students hands-on experience in areas ranging from heat transfer, lighting and energy efficiency to industrial and product design. In the Energy Cube, students design and construct (using cardboard, clear plastic, and glue) a model of a building that admits as much daylight as possible while being energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

The students, working in …

Prioritized Motion–Force Control Of Constrained Fully-Actuated Robots: “Task Space Inverse Dynamics”, A Del Prete, F Nori, G Metta, L Natale

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We present a new framework for prioritized multi-task motion/force control of fully-actuated robots. This work is established on a careful review and comparison of the state of the art. Some control frameworks are not optimal, that is they do not find the optimal solution for the secondary tasks. Other frameworks are optimal, but they tackle the control problem at kinematic level, hence they neglect the robot dynamics and they do not allow for force control. Still other frameworks are optimal and consider force control, but they are computationally less efficient than ours. Our final claim is that, for fully-actuated robots, …

The lack of standardised technological tools to assess psychological characteristics allows traditional tests to be still widely used, though these tests require double processing and expensive procedures. ENACT is both a serious game for a standardised assessment of the user negotiation skills and an Intelligent Tutoring System, which makes use of the data collected during the interaction in order to generate a tailored environment for the user to experience and improve their skills and be guided through learning.

Embodied Cognition And Circular Causality: On The Role Of Constitutive Autonomy In The Reciprocal Coupling Of Perception And Action., D Vernon, R Lowe, S Thill, T Ziemke

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The reciprocal coupling of perception and action in cognitive agents has been firmly established: perceptions guide action but so too do actions influence what is perceived. While much has been said on the implications of this for the agent's external behavior, less attention has been paid to what it means for the internal bodily mechanisms which underpin cognitive behavior. In this article, we wish to redress this by reasserting that the relationship between cognition, perception, and action involves a constitutive element as well as a behavioral element, emphasizing that the reciprocal link between perception and action in cognition merits a …

Posture Affects How Robots And Infants Map Words To Objects., Af Morse, Vl Benitez, T Belpaeme, A Cangelosi, Lb Smith

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

For infants, the first problem in learning a word is to map the word to its referent; a second problem is to remember that mapping when the word and/or referent are again encountered. Recent infant studies suggest that spatial location plays a key role in how infants solve both problems. Here we provide a new theoretical model and new empirical evidence on how the body - and its momentary posture - may be central to these processes. The present study uses a name-object mapping task in which names are either encountered in the absence of their target (experiments 1-3, 6 …

A Robust Navigation Technique For Integration In The Guidance And Control Of An Uninhabited Surface Vehicle, A. Annamalai, A. Motwani, S. K. Sharma, R. Sutton, P. Culverhouse, C. Yang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper proposes the novel use of a weighted Interval Kalman Filter (wIKF) in a robust navigational approach for integration with the guidance and control systems of an uninhabited surface vehicle named Springer. The waypoint tracking capability of this technique is compared with that of one that uses a conventional Kalman Filter (KF) navigational design, when the model of the sensing equipment used by the filter is incorrect. In this case, the KF fails to predict correctly the vehicle's heading, which consequently impacts negatively on the performance of its integrated navigation, guidance and control (NGC). However, the use of a …

Asymmetric Encryption For Wiretap Channels, Salah Yousif Radhi Al-Hassan Jan 2015

Asymmetric Encryption For Wiretap Channels, Salah Yousif Radhi Al-Hassan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Since the definition of the wiretap channel by Wyner in 1975, there has been much research to investigate the communication security of this channel. This thesis presents some further investigations into the wiretap channel which improve the reliability of the communication security. The main results include the construction of best known equivocation codes which leads to an increase in the ambiguity of the wiretap channel by using different techniques based on syndrome coding. Best known codes (BKC) have been investigated, and two new design models which includes an inner code and outer code have been implemented. It is shown that …

Using Higher Ionization States To Increase Coulomb Coupling In An Ultracold Neutral Plasma, M. Lyon, Scott D. Bergeson, A. Diaw, M. S. Murillo

Faculty Publications

We report measurements and simulations of the time-evolving rms velocity distribution in an ultracold neutral plasma. A strongly coupled ultracold neutral Ca+ plasma is generated by photoionizing laser-cooled atoms close to threshold. A fraction of these ions is then promoted to the second ionization state to form a mixed Ca+-Ca2+ plasma. By varying the time delay between the first and the second ionization events, a minimum in ion heating is achieved. We show that the Coulomb strong-coupling parameter Γ increases by a factor of 1.4 to a maximum value of 3.6. A pure Ca2+ plasma …

Thermal Buckling Analysis Of Axially Loaded Columns Of Thin-Walled Open Section With Nonuniform Sectional Properties, Shanshan Cheng, Qi Wu Yan, Long Yuan Li, Boksun Kim

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper presents an analytical study on the thermal buckling analysis of axially loaded columns of thin-walled open section with nonuniform sectional properties. Obtained herein are critical loads related to flexural, torsional and flexural-torsional buckling of an I-section column subjected to an axial compressive load applied at the geometric centroid, and under linearly varied non-uniform temperature distribution scenarios. The analysis is accomplished using traditional energy methods. The influences of thermal strain, nonuniform distribution of pre-buckling stresses, and variation of pre-buckling stresses along the longitudinal axis of the column on critical buckling loads are examined. The present results highlight the importance …

Investigating Some Technical Improvements To Glueball Calculations, B Lucini, C Mcneile, A Rago

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We briefly discuss some issues concerning including the pseudoscalar glueball interpolating operators into the variational basis for computing the masses of the h and h0 mesons. As a start we present some preliminary results for the correlators from pseudoscalar glueball operators on nf = 2+1+1 twisted mass gauge configurations. Preliminary results for the effect of open boundary conditions on the masses of three glueballs computed in quenched QCD are presented. The statistics of glueball correlators are briefly discussed.

The Density Of States Approach At Finite Chemical Potential: A Numerical Study Of The Bose Gas., R Pellegrini, L Bongiovanni, K Langfeld, B Lucini, A Rago

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Recently, a novel algorithm for computing the density of states in statistical systems and quantum field theories has been proposed. The same method can be applied to theories at finite density affected by the notorious sign problem, reducing a high-dimensional oscillating integral to a more tractable one-dimensional one. As an example we applied the method to the relativistic Bose gas.
