A Closer Look At The Interaction Between Music, Personality And Its Effect On Individuals' Stress, Kristen M. Satchel Jan 2015

A Closer Look At The Interaction Between Music, Personality And Its Effect On Individuals' Stress, Kristen M. Satchel

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

With stress being a common occurrence in society, if left unchecked it can lead to dangerous situations, mentally and physically, for an individual. Music is a facet that has been employed to help manage stress. Hanser (1985) indicates classical music has been used as a tool for relaxation and stress reduction. However, differences in the Big Five personality traits have been linked to differences in the use of music as well. The strongest association between personality and music use is the positive correlation between Neuroticism and emotional use of music, indicating that less emotionally stable individuals seem to show greater …

Hence, increasing number of universities is offering courses, certificates and programs at undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of mechatronics. This paper presents an educational program in mechatronics at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad, …

Chemotaxis Of Central Nervous System-Derived Tumor Cells Within Controlled Microenvironments, Jennifer Rico Varela Jan 2015

Chemotaxis Of Central Nervous System-Derived Tumor Cells Within Controlled Microenvironments, Jennifer Rico Varela

Dissertations and Theses

Medulloblastoma (MB) is a malignant pediatric brain tumor known for its aggressive metastatic potential. Despite the well-documented migration of MB cells to other parts of the brain and spinal column, MB chemotaxis is poorly understood. Herein, we examined the in vitro migratory and cellular responses of MB-derived cells to external signaling of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB), and the stromal cell-derived factors 1-alpha (SDF-1). Experiments utilized transwell assays and immunocytochemistry to identify receptor activation in MB migration, and used a microfluidic platform to examine directionality, trajectory, and gradient- dependence of motile cells. Data …

Development Of Super Hydrophobic Surfaces Using Silica Nanoparticles, Muhammad Salman Saleem Jan 2015

Development Of Super Hydrophobic Surfaces Using Silica Nanoparticles, Muhammad Salman Saleem

Dissertations and Theses

The development of surfaces that have high water contact angles and hysteresis has always been of great importance in industrial applications. Various methods and techniques have been introduced to fabricate surfaces at nano-scale to support super hydrophobicity. Some of these techniques are expensive, some are very complex, most can be used for selective materials and substrate and some form surfaces with very poor wear resistance. This document represents a systematic study on fabrication of super hydrophobic surfaces on glass substrate (SiO2) using the functionalized silica (SiO2) nano particles. SU8, Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and Methyphenyl Resin SR355 polymer are being used as …

Is The Trans-Pacific Partnership A ‘Natural’ Trade Bloc?, Matthew Ziegler Jan 2015

Is The Trans-Pacific Partnership A ‘Natural’ Trade Bloc?, Matthew Ziegler

Dissertations and Theses

The Trans-Pacific Partnership began as a free trade agreement between Brunei Darussalam, Chile, New Zealand and Singapore which was enacted in 2004. Since that time, additional countries have entered into formal negotiations to expand the trade bloc, including the USA, Mexico, Peru, Australia, Malaysia, Canada, Vietnam and Japan. This paper seeks to determine whether these countries represent a ‘natural’ trade partnership by comparing and contrasting the trade complementarity index between each pair of countries within the partnership and those other countries counted in the APEC 21 countries plus India, which is a member of the RCEP trade bloc.

Synoptic Patterns Associated With Northeast And South East Ice Storms, Ricardo Vargas Jan 2015

Synoptic Patterns Associated With Northeast And South East Ice Storms, Ricardo Vargas

Dissertations and Theses

Wintertime storms that produce precipitation events such as snow, freezing rain, and ice pellets cause significant damage to utility services and disrupt travel. These synoptic systems involve deep isothermal regions where warm, moist air over-runs surface sub-freezing air. Much attention has been focused on Northeast ice storms, where a study by Cortinas et al. (2004) identified the Northeast as the region with the highest spatial distribution of freezing rain and ice pellets. Castellano (2012) also identified 2 types events where ice storms occur in the Northeast as a result of cold-air intrusions from Canada and from an absence of cold …

Degradation Of Carbon Tetrachloride Using Hydrophobic Green Rust, Sheena Bowman Jan 2015

Degradation Of Carbon Tetrachloride Using Hydrophobic Green Rust, Sheena Bowman

Dissertations and Theses

Hydrophobic green rusts (GR) were produced using aerial oxidation of solutions containing bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (BIS) and sodium N-lauroylsarcosinate (SNLS), iron (II) sulfate and sodium hydroxide. The synthesis was conduced at constant pH 8.0±0.1 for the duration of 1-3 hrs. Partition tests showed GRBIS and GRSNLS suspended in the organic phase (tetrachloroethylene). Through X-ray diffraction analysis both GRs exhibit similar patterns to Green Rust II, an inorganic form of GR. The kinetics of GR reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT) was investigated. CT at high concentrations was degraded at high percentages for GRBIS-3, 88.5% and GRSNLS-5, 97.6%. Their reactions were …

Intra- And Inter-Seasonal Variability Of Supra-Glacial 1 Streams And Lakes Over The West Greenland Ice Sheet 2 From High-Resolution Satellite Optical Data, Michael Gregory Brown Jan 2015

Intra- And Inter-Seasonal Variability Of Supra-Glacial 1 Streams And Lakes Over The West Greenland Ice Sheet 2 From High-Resolution Satellite Optical Data, Michael Gregory Brown

Dissertations and Theses

The Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) is one of the largest glacial ice masses on Earth, second only to the Antarctic ice sheet. The surface hydrology of the GrIS plays a crucial role on the surface energy and mass balance budgets of the ice sheet as a whole. Surface water, known as supra-glacial water, is seasonally found in the ablation zone and feeds the en-glacial and sub-glacial hydrological environments of the ice sheet. The spatial distribution of surface streams is poorly understood and their temporal variability is (to our knowledge) unknown. One of the reasons for the lack of knowledge on …

Using A 3d World To Address Perceptual Issues In Human-Robot Coordination, D. Paul Benjamin, Damian M. Lyons Jan 2015

Using A 3d World To Address Perceptual Issues In Human-Robot Coordination, D. Paul Benjamin, Damian M. Lyons

CSIS Technical Reports

The paper argues that effective human-robot coordination benefits from active, goal-oriented perception and internal simulation. ADAPT constructs and continually updates a 3D virtual model of the robot, its environment, and people; physics simulation allows the robot to anticipate action effects and plan interactions. The architecture also uses the virtual world to connect perceptual context, cognitive semantics, and natural-language interaction.

Synthesis & Hypercest Testing Of Ctv Derivatives: A Bowl Shaped Compound That Encapsulates Xenon, Joseph D. Brown

Open Access Dissertations

The primary focus of this dissertation is the synthesis and testing of cyclotriveratrylenes (CTV) as potential biomedical molecular imaging contrast agents. CTVs are bowl shaped molecules that have a hydrophobic pocket capable of reversibly binding Xenon-129 (129Xe) gas, a spin ½ noble gas, which is diamagnetic and produces a signal when a strong magnetic field is applied to it. These CTVs then create two pools of 129Xe which produce distinct signals in an NMR scan. The creation of the two pools of 129Xe is necessary for the application of an imaging technique named HyperCEST, Hyperpolarized Chemical …

Bond Covenants, Bond Issue Size, And Credit Default Spered Premiums, Jiang Du

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation contains two essays. It discusses the role of bond covenants in modern capital market and how they impact firms’ financial activities. Bond covenants are effective mechanism to mitigate the agency problems between bondholders and bond issuers. The design of bond covenants has extensive influence on firms’ financial activities.

The first essay examines the effect of bond covenants on issue size. The agency problems can prevent bondholders from lending fund to issuers. The inclusion of bond covenants in indenture can provide bondholder with protection by restricting issuers’ activities, indicating the potential relationship between bond issue size and covenants. My …

Quantum Diffusion Of Ultra-Cold Neutrons In A Rough Waveguide In A Gravity Field, Mauricio Escobar Jan 2015

Quantum Diffusion Of Ultra-Cold Neutrons In A Rough Waveguide In A Gravity Field, Mauricio Escobar

Open Access Dissertations

We report the results of our study of propagation of gravitationally quantized ultracold neutrons in rough waveguides in conjunction with GRANIT experiments (ILL, Grenoble). Our theoretical study is done within the frame of the general theory of transport in systems with random rough boundaries developed by Meyerovich et al. We present a theoretical description of GRANIT experiments in the biased diffusion approximation for waveguides with one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) roughness. All system parameters collapse into a single constant (Φ) which determines the depletion times for the gravitational quantum states and the exit neutron count. …

Controlled Deposition Of Tin Oxide And Silver Nanoparticles Using Microcontact Printing, Joo C. Chan, Nicole Hannah-Moore, Shankar B. Rananavare Jan 2015

Controlled Deposition Of Tin Oxide And Silver Nanoparticles Using Microcontact Printing, Joo C. Chan, Nicole Hannah-Moore, Shankar B. Rananavare

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

This report describes extensive studies of deposition processes involving tin oxide (SnOx) nanoparticles on smooth glass surfaces. We demonstrate the use of smooth films of these nanoparticles as a platform for spatially-selective electroless deposition of silver by soft lithographic stamping. The edge and height roughness of the depositing metallic films are 100 nm and 20 nm, respectively, controlled by the intrinsic size of the nanoparticles. Mixtures of alcohols as capping agents provide further control over the size and shape of nanoparticles clusters. The distribution of cluster heights obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM) is modeled through a modified …

First-Generation College Students: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Relationship Between Parental Education Level And Perceptions Of Faculty-Student Interaction, Micol Hutchison Jan 2015

First-Generation College Students: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Relationship Between Parental Education Level And Perceptions Of Faculty-Student Interaction, Micol Hutchison

Theses and Dissertations

While quantitative research has determined that first-generation college students (FGS) are less likely to interact with faculty than are their non-FGS peers, this qualitative study examines how incoming first-year college students, both FGS and non-FGS, perceive faculty-student interaction and whether they consider it important. Addressing different types of interaction with college instructors, both in-class and out-of-class, participants across a range of FGS status shared their views through surveys, individual interviews, and focus groups. Focusing specifically on incoming first year students, this study also explores the motives for, impediments to, and encouragements to faculty-student interaction that students identify. Finally, the study …

Discrete Nonlinear Planar Systems And Applications To Biological Population Models, Shushan Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan Jan 2015

Discrete Nonlinear Planar Systems And Applications To Biological Population Models, Shushan Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan

Theses and Dissertations

We study planar systems of difference equations and applications to biological models of species populations. Central to the analysis of this study is the idea of folding - the method of transforming systems of difference equations into higher order scalar difference equations. Two classes of second order equations are studied: quadratic fractional and exponential.

We investigate the boundedness and persistence of solutions, the global stability of the positive fixed point and the occurrence of periodic solutions of the quadratic rational equations. These results are applied to a class of linear/rational systems that can be transformed into a quadratic fractional equation …

Quartz Crystal Microbalance Studies On Friction Modifiers For Lubricant Applications, Carey Lehner Jan 2015

Quartz Crystal Microbalance Studies On Friction Modifiers For Lubricant Applications, Carey Lehner

Theses and Dissertations

Lubricants are used in numerous applications to control friction and protect moving parts from fatigue. These fluids consist of a variety of surface active chemistries competing for the surface to provide performance. In order to develop fluids that meet the ever-increasing requirements (from legislation and manufacturers), techniques that can provide insight into surface adsorption, in real time, and relate it back to performance are critical.

The objective of this work is to determine if Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D) is an effective technique to investigate surfactant adsorption in regimes that are common to the transportation lubricant industry. QCM-D is …

Meta-Analysis Of Gene Expression Studies, Umaporn Siangphoe Jan 2015

Meta-Analysis Of Gene Expression Studies, Umaporn Siangphoe

Theses and Dissertations

Combining effect sizes from individual studies using random-effects models are commonly applied in high-dimensional gene expression data. However, unknown study heterogeneity can arise from inconsistency of sample qualities and experimental conditions. High heterogeneity of effect sizes can reduce statistical power of the models. We proposed two new methods for random effects estimation and measurements for model variation and strength of the study heterogeneity. We then developed a statistical technique to test for significance of random effects and identify heterogeneous genes. We also proposed another meta-analytic approach that incorporates informative weights in the random effects meta-analysis models. We compared the proposed …

First-Year Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparedness To Integrate 21st Century Skills Into The Technology-Rich Classroom, Tracie Omohundro

Theses and Dissertations

School districts continue to integrate emerging technologies and expectations for 21st century teaching and learning. This movement began with release of Goals 2000 (1994) and has continued through National Education Technology Plan (2010) that noted the “challenge for our education system is to leverage technology to create relevant learning experiences that mirror students’ daily lives and the reality of their futures.” In order to meet that challenge, schools must enlist teachers who are prepared to teach 21st century skills in the technology-rich classroom. Teacher education programs also need to align their preparation models to prepare teachers for that …

Proof-Of-Concept Of Environmental Dna Tools For Atlantic Sturgeon Management, Jameson Hinkle Jan 2015

Proof-Of-Concept Of Environmental Dna Tools For Atlantic Sturgeon Management, Jameson Hinkle

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

The Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, Mitchell) is an anadromous species that spawns in tidal freshwater rivers from Canada to Florida. Overfishing, river sedimentation and alteration of the river bottom have decreased Atlantic Sturgeon populations, and NOAA lists the species as endangered. Ecologists sometimes find it difficult to locate individuals of a species that is rare, endangered or invasive. The need for methods less invasive that can create more resolution of cryptic species presence is necessary. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a non-invasive means of detecting rare, endangered, or invasive species by isolating nuclear or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from the …
