Parameters Estimation Of Material Constitutive Models Using Optimization Algorithms, Kiswendsida Jules Kere Jan 2015

Parameters Estimation Of Material Constitutive Models Using Optimization Algorithms, Kiswendsida Jules Kere

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Optimization Algorithms are very useful for solving engineering problems. Indeed, optimization algorithms can be used to optimize engineering designs in terms of safety and economy. Understanding the proprieties of materials in engineering designs is very important in order to make designs safe. Materials are not really perfectly homogeneous and there are heterogeneous distributions in most materials. In this paper, Self-OPTIM which is an inverse constitutive parameter identification framework will be used to identify parameters of a linear elastic material constitutive model. Data for Self-OPTIM will be obtained using ABAQUS simulation of a dog-bone uniaxial test. Optimization Algorithms will be used …

Spectroscopy is a widely used chemical and medical analysis tool. While spectrophotometers are commonly found in many universities and laboratories, they are not available to all high schools or laboratories in developing countries. The objective of this project was to design a high-quality, 3D-printable, iPhone-compatible spectrophotometer that uses a cell phone camera and interface to collect data. The created 3D-print file will be available to anyone with access to a 3D printer which are increasingly found in many laboratories and schools across the country. A low cost pre-printed kit will also be made for those without access to a 3D …

Applying Hierarchical Task Analysis Method To Discovery Layer Evaluation, Marlen Promann, Tao Zhang Jan 2015

Applying Hierarchical Task Analysis Method To Discovery Layer Evaluation, Marlen Promann, Tao Zhang

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

While usability tests have been helpful in evaluating the success or failure of implementing discovery layers in the library context, the focus of usability tests has remained on the search interface rather than the discovery process for users. The informal site-‐ and context specific usability tests have offered little to test the rigor of the discovery layers against the user goals, motivations and workflow they have been designed to support. This study proposes hierarchical task analysis (HTA) as an important complementary evaluation method to usability testing of discovery layers. Relevant literature is reviewed for the discovery layers and the HTA …

This article represents the second report by an ASCE Task Committee "Infrastructure Impacts of Landscape-driven Weather Change" under the ASCE Watershed Management Technical Committee and the ASCE Hydroclimate Technical Committee. Herein, the 'infrastructure impacts" are referred to as infrastructure-sensitive changes in weather and climate patterns (extremes and non-extremes) that are modulated, among other factors, by changes in landscape, land use and land cover change. In this first report, the article argued for explicitly considering the well-established feedbacks triggered by infrastructure systems to the land-atmosphere system via landscape change. In this report by the ASCE Task Committee (TC), we present the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in growth on the reading and mathematics FCAT 2.0 across varying levels of instrumental music participation by both low- and high-socioeconomic status (SES) middle school students, and to determine whether or not there is a relationship between instrumental music participation and socioeconomic status. The differences between instrumental music participation groups were not found to be statistically significant for both the reading and mathematics FCAT 2.0 growth by high-SES status students, and for reading FCAT 2.0 growth by low-SES status students. The differences between groups were found to be significant for …

Spectrally Accurate Quadratures For Evaluation Of Layer Potentials Close To The Boundary For The 2d Stokes And Laplace Equations, Alex Barnett, Bowei Wu, Shravan Veerapaneni Jan 2015

Spectrally Accurate Quadratures For Evaluation Of Layer Potentials Close To The Boundary For The 2d Stokes And Laplace Equations, Alex Barnett, Bowei Wu, Shravan Veerapaneni

Dartmouth Scholarship

Dense particulate flow simulations using integral equation methods demand accurate evaluation of Stokes layer potentials on arbitrarily close interfaces. In this paper, we generalize techniques for close evaluation of Laplace double-layer potentials in [J. Helsing and R. Ojala, J. Comput. Phys., 227 (2008), pp. 2899--2921]. We create a “globally compensated” trapezoid rule quadrature for the Laplace single-layer potential on the interior and exterior of smooth curves. This exploits a complex representation, a product quadrature (in the style of Kress) for the sawtooth function, careful attention to branch cuts, and second-kind barycentric-type formulae for Cauchy integrals and their derivatives. Upon …

Rheology Of Cross-Linked Polymers And Polymer Foams: Theory And Experimental Results, John Herman Jan 2015

Rheology Of Cross-Linked Polymers And Polymer Foams: Theory And Experimental Results, John Herman

Wayne State University Dissertations

Typical polymers have a time-dependent response to loading which results in stress relaxation or creep. Models using springs/dashpots or Volterra integrals are capable of predicting the material response, but place little or no emphasis on the reasoning behind the response. This research proposes a microscopic reasoning behind polymer chain movement, while developing a model to predict the creep and stress relaxation of a polymer foam. Based on the theorized slip/stick of polymer chains as they slide past each other, this model successfully predicts the behavior of a PMI polymer foam under tensile loads. This model lends insights into polymer microscopic …

Shape Analysis Using Spectral Geometry, Jiaxi Hu Jan 2015

Shape Analysis Using Spectral Geometry, Jiaxi Hu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Shape analysis is a fundamental research topic in computer graphics and computer vision. To date, more and more 3D data is produced by those advanced acquisition capture devices, e.g., laser scanners, depth cameras, and CT/MRI scanners. The increasing data demands advanced analysis tools including shape matching, retrieval, deformation, etc. Nevertheless, 3D Shapes are represented with Euclidean transformations such as translation, scaling, and rotation and digital mesh representations are irregularly sampled. The shape can also deform non-linearly and the sampling may vary. In order to address these challenging problems, we investigate Laplace-Beltrami shape spectra from the differential geometry perspective, focusing more …

Predictable Real-Time Wireless Networking For Sensing And Control, Xiaohui Liu Jan 2015

Predictable Real-Time Wireless Networking For Sensing And Control, Xiaohui Liu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Towards the end goal of providing predictable real-time wireless networking for sensing and control, we have developed a real-time routing protocol MTA that predictably delivers data by their deadlines, and a scheduling protocol PRKS to ensure a certain link reliability based on the Physical-ratio-K (PRK) model, which is both realistic and amenable for distributed implementation, and a greedy scheduling algorithm to deliver as many packets as possible to the sink by a deadline in lossy multi-hop wireless sensor networks.

Real-time routing is a basic element of closed-loop, real-time sensing and control, but it is challenging due to dynamic, uncertain link/path …

Over the last four decades, we have seen a considerable increase in the number of mothers with young children in the paid work force, particularly mothers with children under the age of six. Up until now, feminist literature in the areas of motherhood and paid work has focused on the ways in which working mothers balance the hectic schedules and responsibilities of paid work with the obligations that exist at home. This purpose of this study is to explore the ways in which working mothers with young children experience a third shift of appearance work while working for pay and …

Knowledge Acquisition Processes: Understanding The Communication Event, Richard Jack Ulrey Jr. Jan 2015

Knowledge Acquisition Processes: Understanding The Communication Event, Richard Jack Ulrey Jr.

Wayne State University Dissertations

This research project’s two key discoveries offer new insights into Huber’s (1991) KA sub-processes (congenital learning, experimental learning, vicarious learning, grafting, and searching) and understanding the key elements (who, what, when, where, why, and how) of communication events. Organizational leaders and scholars of communication have a better understanding about how one organization’s team of leaders have addressed and responded to the Great Recession of 2008 and the recent explosion of social media in 2003 by practicing a thematic cycle of KA efforts (identification, strategizing, execution, and reflection) to achieve organizational objectives (partners, technologies, and policies) and a strong communication culture …

Efficient Synergistic De Novo Co-Assembly Of Bacterial Genomes From Single Cells Using Colored De Bruijn Graph, Narjes Sadat Movahedi Tabrizi Jan 2015

Efficient Synergistic De Novo Co-Assembly Of Bacterial Genomes From Single Cells Using Colored De Bruijn Graph, Narjes Sadat Movahedi Tabrizi

Wayne State University Dissertations

Recent progress in DNA amplification techniques, particularly multiple displacement

amplification (MDA), has made it possible to sequence and assemble bacterial

genomes from a single cell. However, the quality of single cell genome assembly has

not yet reached the quality of normal multi-cell genome assembly due to the coverage

bias (including uneven depth of coverage and region blackout) and errors caused by

MDA. Computational methods try to mitigates the amplification bias. In this document

we introduce a de novo co-assembly method using colored de Bruijn graph,

which can overcome the problem of blackout regions due to amplification bias. The

algorithm is …

I review relevant literature on certain inherent public fire service issues regarding technology and cost structure before I briefly discuss the importance of public fire service with regard to overall social welfare. Finally, I employ equity mapping in a case study to assess the effect of a budget cut on equity of fire service allocation in Detroit.

Chapter 2 examines whether socio-economic factors, various aspects of …

Efficient Algorithms And Optimizations For Scientific Computing On Many-Core Processors, Kamel Rushaidat Jan 2015

Efficient Algorithms And Optimizations For Scientific Computing On Many-Core Processors, Kamel Rushaidat

Wayne State University Dissertations

Designing efficient algorithms for many-core and multicore architectures requires using different strategies to allow for the best exploitation of the hardware resources on those architectures. Researchers have ported many scientific applications to modern many-core and multicore parallel architectures, and by doing so they have achieved significant speedups over running on single CPU cores. While many applications have achieved significant speedups, some applications still require more effort to accelerate due to their inherently serial behavior.

One class of applications that has this serial behavior is the Monte Carlo simulations. Monte Carlo simulations have been used to simulate many problems in statistical …

Thermal Variation, Thermal Extremes And The Physiological Performance Of Individuals, W. Wesley Dowd, Felicia A. King, Mark W. Denny Jan 2015

Thermal Variation, Thermal Extremes And The Physiological Performance Of Individuals, W. Wesley Dowd, Felicia A. King, Mark W. Denny

Biology Faculty Works

In this review we consider how small-scale temporal and spatial variation in body temperature, and biochemical/physiological variation among individuals, affect the prediction of organisms’ performance in nature. For ‘normal’ body temperatures – benign temperatures near the species’ mean – thermal biology traditionally uses performance curves to describe how physiological capabilities vary with temperature. However, these curves, which are typically measured under static laboratory conditions, can yield incomplete or inaccurate predictions of how organisms respond to natural patterns of temperature variation. For example, scale transition theory predicts that, in a variable environment, peak average performance is lower and occurs at a …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The reuse of winery wastewater (WW) could provide an alternative water source for vineyard irrigation. The shift of many wineries and other food processing industries to K+-based cleaners requires studies onthe effects of K+on soil hydraulic conductivity (HC). Depending on clay content and mineral composition,K+additions can affect the HC either positively or negatively. Soil mineralogy was anticipated to exhibita strong influence on HC responses and, therefore, soils of contrasting mineralogy were evaluated forchanges in soil HC resulting from applications of solutions elevated in Na+and K+. To examine the impactof mineral-ion relationships on HC, soils dominant in montmorillonite, vermiculite, or kaolinite from …
