On The Protective Properties Of Glycine Based Osmolytes In A Thiol Reducing Environment, John Michael Hausman Jan 2015

On The Protective Properties Of Glycine Based Osmolytes In A Thiol Reducing Environment, John Michael Hausman

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The protective properties of osmolytes have been studied intently for decades. Originally used to aid in the crystallization of proteins in x-ray diffraction studies, these cosolvents have been shown to reverse protein denaturation and aggregation. Osmolytes aid extremophiles in surviving harsh environments by preferentially excluding themselves from the surface of the protein, thus directing water molecules to the protein’s surface. These osmolytes are naturally found in many health foods and also in many daily use products such as shampoo. Due to their osmoprotective effect their use in everyday consumer product is increasing. Consumers also supplement their diets with thiol-based antioxidants …

A Sub-Basin Water Resource Quantification And Aquifer Productivity Assessment For The Northwest Borehole Scheme Near Opuwo, Namibia, Lucas C. Moilanen Jan 2015

A Sub-Basin Water Resource Quantification And Aquifer Productivity Assessment For The Northwest Borehole Scheme Near Opuwo, Namibia, Lucas C. Moilanen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Namibia is the most arid country in southern Africa, and is classified as experiencing medium-water stress from 2010-2014 by the Water Resources Institute (WRI) (World Bank, 2015) (Gassert, 2013). Increased water-resources management responsibility at the municipal level, population growth and urbanization trends necessitate community-scale quantification of water resources.

An annual water balance for the contributing sub-basin to Opuwo, Namibia was performed. The Behnke and Maxey method was used to estimate PET, and the methodology outlined by Allen, et al was used to determine soil moisture response to individual rainfall events for one hypothetical year. Water balance results indicate that of …

Application Of Hydrodynamic Models In Simulating The Thermal Regime Of Lake Superior, Rasika K. Gawde Jan 2015

Application Of Hydrodynamic Models In Simulating The Thermal Regime Of Lake Superior, Rasika K. Gawde

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In large systems, such as the Great Lakes and coastal oceans, physical processes have a significant influence on chemical and biological phenomena. Hydrodynamic modeling assists in describing these physical characteristics and in recent years, these models have been extensively applied in the Great Lakes basin to study the response of the lake ecosystem to long-term meteorological forcing conditions.

Due to its role in mediating physical, biological and chemical processes in lake environments, water temperature (and the attendant thermal regime) has been the parameter of interest in many of these mathematical modeling studies and was adopted as the primary metric for …

Structures, Properties And Functionalities Of Magnetic Domain Walls In Thin Films, Nanowires And Atomic Chains: Micromagnetic And Ab Initio Studies, Liwei D. Geng Jan 2015

Structures, Properties And Functionalities Of Magnetic Domain Walls In Thin Films, Nanowires And Atomic Chains: Micromagnetic And Ab Initio Studies, Liwei D. Geng

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Structures, properties and functionalities of magnetic domain walls in thin film, nanowires and atomic chains are studied by micromagnetic simulations and ab initio calculations in this dissertation. For magnetic domain walls in thin films, we computationally investigated the dynamics of one-dimensional domain wall line in ultrathin ferromagnetic film, and the exponent α = 1.24 ± 0.05 is obtained in the creep regime near depinning force, indicating the washboard potential model is supported by our simulations. Furthermore, the roughness, creep, depinning and flow of domain wall line with commonly existed substructures driven by magnetic field are also studied. Our simulation results …

An Analysis Of Multiplicative Regularization, Elaheh Gorgin Jan 2015

An Analysis Of Multiplicative Regularization, Elaheh Gorgin

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Inverse problems arise in many branches of science and engineering. In order to get a good approximation of the solution of this kind of problems, the use of regularization methods is required. Tikhonov regularization is one of the most popular methods for estimating the solutions of inverse problems. This method needs a regularization parameter and the quality of the approximate solution depends on how good the regularization parameter is.

The L-curve method is a convenient parameter choice strategy for selecting the Tikhonov regularization parameter and it works well most of the time. There are some problems in which the L-curve …

Characterization Of Transport And Transformation Of Air Pollutants Observed In The Free Troposphere Over The Central North Atlantic, Bo Zhang Jan 2015

Characterization Of Transport And Transformation Of Air Pollutants Observed In The Free Troposphere Over The Central North Atlantic, Bo Zhang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Long-range transport of continental pollution emissions has been found to affect air quality in the downwind regions. The Pico Mountain Observatory (PMO), which was established in 2001 in the Azores Islands, has been a perfect site to study long range transport from North America to the central North Atlantic. The dissertation uses the observations and modeling products created since 2001 to provide insights on ozone production tendency during transport, trace gases observations for varying transport patterns, and aerosol ages in the free troposphere over the central North Atlantic.

The first phase of this dissertation research focused on determining the causes …

Modeling Of Biomass Torrefaction And Pyrolysis And Its Applications, Jordan L. Klinger Jan 2015

Modeling Of Biomass Torrefaction And Pyrolysis And Its Applications, Jordan L. Klinger

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Utilizing biomass provides a possible near-term alternative solution for fossil energy dependence in both electricity generation and transportation. Though thermochemical conversion can produce solid/liquid fuels that are compatible in existing infrastructure, detailed scientific chemical and mechanistic understanding are still being developed. In contribution to these efforts, this work is focused on development of a semiempirical, lumped parameter, chemical kinetic model to describe the degradation of woody biomass.

The initial kinetic model was developed in the torrefaction region to describe the gas-phase evolution of products (water, organic acids, permanent gases, and furfural) through a three consecutive reaction model. In this model, …

Functional Reactive Programming For Games, Peter Adewunmi Salu Jan 2015

Functional Reactive Programming For Games, Peter Adewunmi Salu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We investigate the effectiveness of functional reactive programming for games. To accomplish this, we clone aa, an existing game, in Elm, a purely functional programming language. We find that functional reactive programming offers an excellent alternative to event driven programming in purely functional languages. Elm still needs more work if it aims to compete with JavaScript libraries. Games, which typically need several inputs at the same time, benefit from the first class status of Signals, which allow them to be combined.

Reasoning Over Taxonomic Change: Exploring Alignments For The Perelleschus Use Case, Nico M. Franz, Mingmin Chen, Shizhuo Yu, Parisa Kianmajd, Shaun Bowers, Bertram Ludäscher

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

Classifications and phylogenetic inferences of organismal groups change in light of new insights. Over time these changes can result in an imperfect tracking of taxonomic perspectives through the re-/use of Code-compliant or informal names. To mitigate these limitations, we introduce a novel approach for aligning taxonomies through the interaction of human experts and logic reasoners. We explore the performance of this approach with the Perelleschus use case of Franz & Cardona-Duque (2013). The use case includes six taxonomies published from 1936 to 2013, 54 taxonomic concepts (i.e., circumscriptions of names individuated according to their respective source publications), and 75 expert-asserted …

Background

Mangrove forests are ecologically important but globally threatened intertidal plant communities. Effective mangrove conservation requires the determination of species identity, management units, and genetic structure. Here, we investigate the genetic distinctiveness and genetic structure of an iconic but yet taxonomically confusing species complex Rhizophora mucronata and R. stylosa across their distributional range, by employing a suite of 20 informative nuclear SSR markers.

Results

Our results demonstrated the general genetic distinctiveness of R. mucronata and R. stylosa, and potential hybridization or introgression between them. We investigated the population genetics of each species without the putative hybrids, and found strong …

The Relationship Between English Language Learners And Reading Disabilities Profiles: Language Acquisition Vs. Reading Disabilities, Emily S. Hartz Jan 2015

The Relationship Between English Language Learners And Reading Disabilities Profiles: Language Acquisition Vs. Reading Disabilities, Emily S. Hartz

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

School psychologists are asked to determine whether or not a student’s limited English proficiency affects his or her eligibly for special education services. Scores from language proficiency tests, such as the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs English Language Proficiency Test, are often the only data available that speak to a student’s language proficiency. There is little research that speaks to how scores on these tests relate to performance on diagnostic testing for special education, specifically achievement testing. In this sample of data drawn from a population of English language learners, who also qualify for special education services under the disability of …

Student Motivation: Teacher Perceptions, Beliefs And Practices, Teresa M. D'Elisa Jan 2015

Student Motivation: Teacher Perceptions, Beliefs And Practices, Teresa M. D'Elisa

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' beliefs, perceptions and practices related to student motivation. Two-hundred-and-six teachers from 13 states completed an on-line survey containing the Perception of Student Motivation questionnaire (PSM), Motivating Strategies Questionnaire (MSQ), and researcher-devised questions examining theoretical beliefs and practices. Results reveal that teachers consider motivation to be an important part of their teaching. Teachers' reporting feeling efficacious for diagnosing and intervening for student motivation and believing in the malleability of motivation was found to correlate with motivational strategy use. This finding was consistent with previous research. However, their endorsement of theoretical beliefs and …

Efficacy In Emergency Legal Preparedness Underlying The 2014 Ebola Outbreak, James G. Hodge Jr., Leila Barraza, Kim Weidenaar, Alicia Corbett, Gregory Measer, Asha M. Agrawal

Texas A&M Law Review

From its relative obscurity over the past three decades, Ebola viral disease (“EVD”) emerged as a substantial global biothreat in 2014 and 2015. The current outbreak of varied strains of Ebola, beginning in March 2014 in Guinea, is projected to impact hundreds of thousands of people over months, years, or even indefinitely. As of October 31, 2014, the spread of EVD was concentrated in several Af- rican countries (e.g., Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, and an unrelated outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo), with limited additional cases in Nigeria, Senegal, and Mali. Over 2,700 people are known to have died from …

The Relational Economics Of Commercial Contract, Chapin F. Cimino Jan 2015

The Relational Economics Of Commercial Contract, Chapin F. Cimino

Texas A&M Law Review

Modern contract law scholarship embraces a particularly strange contradiction. On one hand, most legal scholars accept the core insight of what is called relational contract theory: most commercial contracts involve repeat players who seek to maximize wealth while still maintaining cooperative relationships. On the other hand, many of these same contract scholars believe that there is nothing contract law could or should do about it. They contend that contract law and legal theory are better off ignoring this insight, rather than trying to respond to it.

. . . .

This Article brings these disparate lines of contract scholarship together …

Construct Validity Of The Developmental Test Of Visual-Perception Third Edition (Dtvp-3) In Western Australian Primary School Children, Kirsten Clarke Jan 2015

Construct Validity Of The Developmental Test Of Visual-Perception Third Edition (Dtvp-3) In Western Australian Primary School Children, Kirsten Clarke

Theses : Honours

Visual perception is the ability to identify, organise, make meaning of and provide sense to what is seen in the world in which we live. Visual perceptual skills continuously develop in primary school children as seen in academic performance. If visual perceptual difficulties are unaddressed, the cumulative academic result can be detrimental throughout life. Thus, visual perceptual difficulties must be identified using tests that possess sound measurement properties to allow for early intervention. The purpose of the research was to determine the construct validity of the Developmental Test of Visual Perception Third Edition (DTVP-3). The DTVP-3 was designed and standardised …

Neutrosophic Graphs: A New Dimension To Graph Theory, Florentin Smarandache, Wb. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors for the first time have made a through study of neutrosophic graphs. This study reveals that these neutrosophic graphs give a new dimension to graph theory. The important feature of this book is it contains over 200 neutrosophic graphs to provide better understanding of this concepts. Further these graphs happen to behave in a unique way inmost cases, for even the edge colouring problem is different from the classical one. Several directions and dimensions in graph theory are obtained from this study. Finally certainly these new notions of neutrosophic graphs in general and in particular the …
