The Application Of The Self Organizing Map To The Vehicle Routing Problem, Meghan Steinhaus Jan 2015

The Application Of The Self Organizing Map To The Vehicle Routing Problem, Meghan Steinhaus

Open Access Dissertations

The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is an P-hard, combinatorial optimization problem. For P-hard problems, there is no known polynomial time algorithm to solve these problems. Therefore, for many moderately sized problems, these problems cannot be reliably solved to optimality. This is the case with the VRP, where problem instances with over 100 cities are not easily solved using exact methods. Therefore, the majority of VRP research focuses on heuristics.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are inspired by the functions in the human brain. Researchers have applied ANNs across a wide range of problems with great success. Since solving the VRP relies …

“The Highest Limit Of Statesmanship” Ritterian Geography And Russian Exploration Of The Amur River Basin, 1849–1853, Sharyl Corrado Jan 2015

“The Highest Limit Of Statesmanship” Ritterian Geography And Russian Exploration Of The Amur River Basin, 1849–1853, Sharyl Corrado

All Faculty Open Access Publications

The lower Amur River basin was annexed by Russia in the mid-nineteenth century following several years of unauthorized exploration by naval officer Gennadii Nevel'skoi. Scholars recognize multiple factors—geopolitical, economic, and nationalist—that prompted Russia's interest in the region. This article adds to this list the budding science of geography, and in particular, the influence of German geographer Karl Ritter. To Ritter, a nation's true borders were set by nature, not by man. His ideas are reflected in both the words and actions of Nevel'skoi regarding the lower Amur basin. The explorer described the territory not as foreign or other, but as …

A Software Patent War: The Effects Of Patent Trolls On Startup Companies, Innovation, And Entrepreneurship, Sonia Karakashian Jan 2015

A Software Patent War: The Effects Of Patent Trolls On Startup Companies, Innovation, And Entrepreneurship, Sonia Karakashian

UC Law Business Journal

This note analyzes the effects of patent trolls on startup companies and the issues that software patentability under 35 U.S.C. § 101 impose on this highly controversial area of intellectual property. This note elaborates on the current patent reforms as well as the common law struggles addressed in Supreme Court decisions. Further, it discusses the software patent war and the controversial issues raised in § 101 of the patent system followed by the issues of patentability and its effects on startup companies. Lastly, this note discusses short-term and long-term progress in the patent system, as well as address the current …

Wage Distribution Impacts Of Higher Education Faculty Unionization, Charles S. Wassell Jr., David W. Hedrick, Steven E. Henson, John M. Krieg Jan 2015

Wage Distribution Impacts Of Higher Education Faculty Unionization, Charles S. Wassell Jr., David W. Hedrick, Steven E. Henson, John M. Krieg

Economics Faculty Scholarship

The literature on the effects of unions on the distribution of wages at the macroeconomic and inter-industry levels has given little attention to the effects at the firm level. At the same time, research on collective bargaining impacts in higher education has focused on the overall wage level rather than on the distribution of salaries. Using panel data on individual faculty members, we find faculty unionization to be associated with a significant flattening of the wage distribution across academic disciplines. This has implications for why faculty might choose to unionize, even in the absence of an overall wage premium.
