Ikamva Youth: Field Research Analysis, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince Nov 2015

Ikamva Youth: Field Research Analysis, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince

Miller Center Fellowship

IkamvaYouth empowers South African students from under-resourced and under-performing secondary schools to achieve academic results competitive with those of the best-funded schools in the country. The organisation is able to offer extensive tutoring services free of charge due to the hard work of its committed volunteer tutors. As more students, called “learners,” flock to join the programme and IkamvaYouth grows, it faces challenges in attracting and maintaining an optimal amount of volunteer tutors.

We conducted a quantitative online survey of tutors’ demographic information, backgrounds, and experiences with the organisation. Of IkamvaYouth’s approximately 300 tutors, 223 responded. We conducted tutor and …

Physics

We report deep optical integral-field spectroscopy with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the Very Large Telescope of the luminous radio-quiet quasi-stellar object (QSO) PG 1307+085 obtained during commissioning. Given the high sensitivity and spatial resolution delivered by MUSE, we are able to resolve the compact (re ∼ 1.3 arcsec) elliptical host galaxy. After spectroscopic deblending of the QSO and host galaxy emission, we infer a stellar velocity dispersion of σ* = 155 ± 19 km s−1. This places PG 1307+085 on the local MBH–σ* relation within its intrinsic scatter but offset …

Optical Communication Using Hybrid Micro Electro Mechanical Structures (Mems) And Commercial Corner Cube Retroreflector (Ccr), Sunny Kedia Nov 2015

Optical Communication Using Hybrid Micro Electro Mechanical Structures (Mems) And Commercial Corner Cube Retroreflector (Ccr), Sunny Kedia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a free-space, long-range, passive optical communication system that uses electrostatically modulated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) structures coupled with a glass total internal reflection (TIR)-type corner cube retroreflector (CCR) as a non-emitting data transmitter. A CCR consists of three mirrors orthogonal to each other, so that the incident beam is reflected back to the incident beam, source. The operational concept is to have a MEMS modulator fusion with TIR CCR, such that the modulators are working periodically to disrupt the evanescent waves at the air interface of one of the three back glass faces of a TIR CCR. The …

Quantum Markov Chains, Sufficiency Of Quantum Channels, And Rényi Information Measures, Nilanjana Datta, Mark M. Wilde Nov 2015

Quantum Markov Chains, Sufficiency Of Quantum Channels, And Rényi Information Measures, Nilanjana Datta, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

A short quantum Markov chain is a tripartite state ρABC such that system A can be recovered perfectly by acting on system C of the reduced state . ρBC Such states have conditional mutual information I (A; B C) equal to zero and are the only states with this property. A quantum channel N is sufficient for two states ρ and σ if there exists a recovery channel using which one can perfectly recover ρ from N(ρ) and σ from N(σ). The relative entropy difference D(ρ∥σ) - D(N(ρ)∥N(σ)) is equal to zero if and only if N is sufficient for …

Tunable Unconventional Kondo Effect On Topological Insulator Surfaces, L. Isaev, G. Ortiz, I. Vekhter Nov 2015

Tunable Unconventional Kondo Effect On Topological Insulator Surfaces, L. Isaev, G. Ortiz, I. Vekhter

Faculty Publications

We study Kondo physics of a spin-12 impurity in electronic matter with strong spin-orbit interaction, which can be realized by depositing magnetic adatoms on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We show that magnetic properties of topological surface states and the very existence of Kondo screening strongly depend on details of the bulk material, and specifics of surface preparation encoded in time-reversal preserving boundary conditions for electronic wavefunctions. When this tunable Kondo effect occurs, the impurity spin is screened by purely orbital motion of surface electrons. This mechanism gives rise to a transverse magnetic response of the surface metal, …

Toward Higher-Order Mass Detection: Influence Of An Adsorbate’S Rotational Inertia And Eccentricity On The Resonant Response Of A Bernoulli-Euler Cantilever Beam, Stephen M. Heinrich, Isabelle Dufour Nov 2015

Toward Higher-Order Mass Detection: Influence Of An Adsorbate’S Rotational Inertia And Eccentricity On The Resonant Response Of A Bernoulli-Euler Cantilever Beam, Stephen M. Heinrich, Isabelle Dufour

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper a new theoretical model is derived, the results of which permit a detailed examination of how the resonant characteristics of a cantilever are influenced by a particle (adsorbate) attached at an arbitrary position along the beam’s length. Unlike most previous work, the particle need not be small in mass or dimension relative to the beam, and the adsorbate’s geometric characteristics are incorporated into the model via its rotational inertia and eccentricity relative to the beam axis. For the special case in which the adsorbate’s (translational) mass is indeed small, an analytical solution is obtained for the particle-induced …

Internet-based map applications have become a widely implemented GIS tool, and by most estimations, will experience continued growth over the coming years. The real estate industry is particularly well positioned to capitalize on the boom of web mapping technologies as real estate is a largely spatial discipline. To fulfill the marketing objectives of a real estate appraisal firm, a web-based mapping application was developed to execute simple spatial analysis tasks. The application is capable of analysis tasks such as heat mapping and includes geolocation services as well as coordinate conversion. All processes are executed within the Google Map API and …

Evaluating English-Learner Inclusion As An Effective Educational Strategy For English-Learner Students, Grace Dreyer Nov 2015

Evaluating English-Learner Inclusion As An Effective Educational Strategy For English-Learner Students, Grace Dreyer

Senior Honors Theses

The United States of America has experienced unprecedented growth in the percentage of English Learners students enrolling in schools across the country. While federal guidelines and policies have been implemented within the past fifty years to hold school systems accountable for effectively education LEP students, there is no mandated model for educating English Language Learners. The massive number of students speaking foreign languages is a relatively recent issue, and government policy allows schools to operate with considerable flexibility; consequently, a variety of self-contained and English-inclusion strategies have emerged. Reducing costs and a number of other factors have led more school …

Predictive Analytics Of Organizational Decisions And The Role Of Rationality, Arash Barfar Nov 2015

Predictive Analytics Of Organizational Decisions And The Role Of Rationality, Arash Barfar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

How can we predict key decisions made by organizations in the presence of big data and on-demand information? In this dissertation we exploit a large repository of B2B real-time transactional data with service quality indicators and present evidence that organizational decision analytics apply both rational and boundedly-rational (i.e. behavioral) economic models. The dissertation’s findings demonstrate that both utility and heuristic models, respectively, play significant roles in predicting organizational decisions on churn, a key decision in this context. In the presence of a large data set the assumed rationality of organizations appears to provide accurate predictions in uncontrolled experiences and selected …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Face-To-Face Orientations, Instructor Verbal Immediacy Behaviors, And Persistence In Online Courses, Donald Painter, Jr. Nov 2015

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Face-To-Face Orientations, Instructor Verbal Immediacy Behaviors, And Persistence In Online Courses, Donald Painter, Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The persistence rate in online classes remains significantly lower than in comparable face-to-face classes. There is a lack of research on strategies to help learners persist in online classes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between face-to-face orientations, instructor verbal immediacy behaviors, and persistence in online classes. It also explored the relationship between verbal immediacy and student satisfaction. Due to the disagreement in the literature, this study also investigated the relationship between student demographic variables, grade point average, and persistence.

This quantitative study combined both causal-comparative and correlational research methods. The study took place at a …

In Vacuo Fabrication And Electronic Structure Characterization Of Atomic Layer Deposition Thin Films, Michael Schaefer Nov 2015

In Vacuo Fabrication And Electronic Structure Characterization Of Atomic Layer Deposition Thin Films, Michael Schaefer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Improvement of novel electronic devices is possible by tailor-designing the electronic structure at device interfaces. Common problems observed at interfaces are related to unwanted band alignment caused by the chemical diversity of interface partners, influencing device performance negatively. One way to address this problem is by introducing ultra-thin interfacial dipole layers, steering the band alignment in a desired direction. The requirements are strict in terms of thickness, conformity and low density of defects, making sophisticated deposition techniques necessary. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) with its Ångstrom-precise thickness control can fulfill those requirements.

The work presented here encompasses the implementation of an …

A Multiscale Systems Model For Advancement Of A New Line Of Therapy For Osteoporosis, Rena J. Eudy

Doctoral Dissertations

The osteocyte is a load-sensing bone cell, which plays a pivotal role in the bone modeling process. This process is highly regulated by feedback control and poorly described by isolated in vivo or in vitro experiments. In silico systems models present a way by which experimental and clinical data can be integrated in a mathematical framework so that physiology, pharmacology and disease progression as it relates to bone health, at the level of cell signaling networks up to the tissue level, can can be better understood. The Multiscale Systems Pharmacology Model presented here began as an endeavor to link biological …

Direct Solutions To Perceptual Organization Problems, Ravi Kumar Panchumarthy Nov 2015

Direct Solutions To Perceptual Organization Problems, Ravi Kumar Panchumarthy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quadratic optimization problems arise in various real world application domains including engineering design, microeconomics, genetic algorithms, integrated circuit chip design, probabilistic graphical models and computer vision. In particular, there are many problems in computer vision that require binary quadratic optimization such as motion segmentation, correspondences, figure-ground segmentation, clustering, grouping, subgraph matching, and digital matting. The objective of an optimization algorithm can be related to the state of a physical system, where the goal is to bring the initial arbitrary state of the system to a state with minimum possible energy. By recognizing that the Hamiltonian of nanomagnets can be expressed …

Determination Of The Frequency Response Of An End Tidal Co2 Analyser, Kabita Shakya, Catherine Deegan, Fran Hegarty Nov 2015

Determination Of The Frequency Response Of An End Tidal Co2 Analyser, Kabita Shakya, Catherine Deegan, Fran Hegarty

The ITB Journal

In a health care environment, mechanical ventilation is used to support patients during acute illness and surgery. Mechanical ventilation is the process by which the patient’s respiratory function is artificially supported using a respirator. During mechanical ventilation, it is necessary to ensure the adequacy of ventilation. The patient is thus monitored for several ventilatory parameters. The end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) is one of the primary monitoring parameters. EtCO2 is the partial pressure or maximal concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) at the end of an exhaled breath, which is expressed as a percentage of CO2 or mmHg . Capnography is the technique …

Multiculturalism In Secondary Schools – A Linguistic, Socio-Political & Pedagogic Perspective, Maria Kenneally

The ITB Journal

As a modern foreign language lecturer I am fascinated by issues of language, culture and identity. To an extent my interest is compounded by the belief that we Irish are bilingual, English and Gaeilge, - a rich language with a strong oral tradition that has been an integral part of Irish identity. In September 1996 I began work as a secondary teacher in an inner city London school with a high proportion of multilingual and multicultural students. My observations and interactions with pupils at Plumstead Manor proved part of a journey of selfanalysis and self-discovery, and fortified my belief that …
