Lightweight Deployment Mechanism Of Solar Arrays For Use In Cubesats, John Wood Ellis Dec 2015

Lightweight Deployment Mechanism Of Solar Arrays For Use In Cubesats, John Wood Ellis

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Cube satellites, also referred to as CubeSats, were developed in the late twentieth century, and have since served as a cost-effective method of gathering out-of-this-world data. The development of these small-scale satellites have helped universities and small companies worldwide to perform important experiments, as well as gather critical data in order to provide for further space exploration. Cube satellites are designed to be self-sustaining, by using solar cells to capture impinging thermal energy and convert it to power to be consumed by the electronics housed within the satellite itself. In order to function properly, these cells are extended in an …

Syneresis And Rheology Mechanisms Of A Latex-Heur Associative Thickener System, Travis Bruno Smith Dec 2015

Syneresis And Rheology Mechanisms Of A Latex-Heur Associative Thickener System, Travis Bruno Smith

Master's Theses

Rheology modifiers are used in paints and coatings to ease their application to a surface, prevent sagging once applied, and allow the leveling of brushstrokes, among other benefits. The early rheology modifiers were hydroxyethyl celluloses (HECs), a type of non-associative thickener that is relatively inexpensive and synthesized from cellulose, which is abundant. However, coatings that are modified with HECs tend to suffer from poor leveling and syneresis (phase separation). HECs have since been replaced with associative thickeners (ATs). These thickeners, when properly formulated, produce stable dispersions that have improved rheological properties, yet, unlike HECs, are sensitive to changes to the …

Boundary Conditions As Dynamical Fields, V. Parameswaran Nair, Dimitra Karabali Dec 2015

Boundary Conditions As Dynamical Fields, V. Parameswaran Nair, Dimitra Karabali

Publications and Research

The possibility of treating boundary conditions in terms of a bilocal dynamical field is formalized in terms of a boundary action. This allows for a simple path-integral perturbation theory approach to physical effects such as radiation from a time-dependent boundary. The nature of the action which governs the dynamics of the bilocal field is investigated for a limited case (which includes the Robin boundary conditions).

Label Free Analysis Of Native Planktonic P. Aeruginosa Cells And Growth Media By Near Infrared (Nir) Binary Spectronephelometry (Bsn), Steven Ortiz

Dissertations - ALL

Current noninvasive methods are unable to continuously and simultaneously monitor the concentration of cells and chemical components that define the state of native bacterial cultures because of the changing turbidity. We seek to solve this problem without subjecting the growing culture to the risk of contamination afforded by physical sampling. The Binary Spectronephelometry (BSN) algorithm uses laser induced emission to probe mildly turbid media. A training set spanning the linear range of elastic emission (EE) i.e. physical scattering and inelastic emission (IE) i.e. fluorescence and Raman emission was produced with varying concentrations of bacteria and standard media using a modified …

Attrition in online courses is of growing concern in higher education. Many researchers and practitioners are concerned about student persistence (course completion) and performance (completion of a course with a grade of C or better) in online courses. This study investigated the undergraduate student characteristics that predict student persistence and performance in online courses and the face-to-face equivalents at a four-year private northeastern university. The sample consists of undergraduate students (42,280 observations, 25,167 unduplicated student headcount, which is the actual number of individual students in the population) who enrolled in courses, regardless of delivery format, from fall 2002 to spring …

Angular Trapping Of A Mirror Using Radiation Pressure, David Bruce Kelley Dec 2015

Angular Trapping Of A Mirror Using Radiation Pressure, David Bruce Kelley

Dissertations - ALL

Alignment control in gravitational-wave detectors has consistently proven to be a

dicult problem due to the stringent noise contamination requirement for the gravitational

wave readout and the radiation-pressure induced angular instability in Fabry-

Perot cavities (Sidles-Sigg instability). In this thesis, I present optical springs as a

tool to damp the motion of a mirror. I discuss the design and implementation of a single

degree-of-freedom optical spring system and the importance of the photothermal

eect in properly predicting optical spring behavior.

I also present the development and implementation of an angular control scheme,

attempting to damp two degrees of freedom with …

Dissertations - ALL

ABSTRACT

By 2003, both the New York State Board of Regents Policy Statement and the new Commissioner’s Regulation 100.4, required all middle level programs to implement a set of policies and practices called the NYS Essential Elements of Standards-Focused Middle-Level Schools and Programs. Early adolescence (ages 10-14) is a time when students experience, the most tumultuous physical and mental changes occur during adolescence, with the exception of a child’s first year of life (Montessori, 2004). Middle grade level philosophy and a description of what middle schools should be like are directly linked to taking a balanced approach to meeting the …

Leading Curricular Change: The Role Of The School Principal In Implementation Of The Common Core State Standards, Tiffany Marie Squires Dec 2015

Leading Curricular Change: The Role Of The School Principal In Implementation Of The Common Core State Standards, Tiffany Marie Squires

Dissertations - ALL

Principals, whose jobs are increasingly being reframed as requiring instructional leadership (Lunenburg, 2013; Hallinger, 2005), serve as a vital link between standards-based reform and its successful implementation at the school level (Fullan, 2011; Hallinger & Heck, 1996; Leithwood & Riehl, 2005; Spillane & Hunt, 2010). Standards-based reform or guidelines for change mandated by state government significantly influence teaching and learning (Beane, 2013). Our nation’s latest iteration of standards-based reform is comprised within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which are currently fully implemented in 42 states. Despite the essential role of the school leader in implementation of standards-based reform, research …

Structure, Dynamics And Rheology Of Polymer Solutions From Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics: Effects Of Polymer Concentration, Solvent Quality And Geometric Confinement, Yutian Yang Dec 2015

Structure, Dynamics And Rheology Of Polymer Solutions From Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics: Effects Of Polymer Concentration, Solvent Quality And Geometric Confinement, Yutian Yang

Dissertations - ALL

Understanding flow-microstructure interactions in macromolecular fluids is of great

importance in the design and optimization of ubiquitous polymer processing operations.

Further, such interactions are routinely encountered in separation of biopolymer mixtures

using gel electrophoresis and microfluidic technologies, manufacturing of polymer-based

functional nanocomposites and polymer-induced reduction in turbulent friction drag. To

date, the vast amount of theoretical/computational modeling efforts on flowmicrostructure

coupling has focused on continuum-level and stochastic descriptions.

Such approaches, while useful in qualitatively predicting polymer dynamics and rheology

in model systems, are incapable of describing the effects of polymer-solvent, polymerpolymer

and polymer-wall interactions. Further, in the context of polymer …

Rewetting Of Artificially Desiccated Soils: Effect Of Gravity On Vapor-Phase Diffusion, Taylor Arland Ball Dec 2015

Rewetting Of Artificially Desiccated Soils: Effect Of Gravity On Vapor-Phase Diffusion, Taylor Arland Ball

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Soil desiccation has been suggested as an economically viable alternative for stabilizing water soluble contaminants in deep vadose zones such as at the Hanford Site. This approach would result in a large volume of the vadose zone being dried out in an effort to eliminate the transport mechanism for aqueous phase contaminants. Protecting the top and sides of the desiccated vadose zone from rewetting is a realistic possibility; however, it would be extremely difficult to restrict the upward migration of water from beneath the desiccated zone. One scenario related to the rewetting of the desiccated soil involves the upward migration …

Simulation Of An Air Cooled Single-Effect Solar Absorption Cooling System With Evacuated Tube Collectors, Mohsen Jahandardoost

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Consistently increasing CO2 emission and ozone depletion from synthetic refrigerants are serious environmental issues challenging the scientific community. Absorption cooling systems give scope of utilizing low grade energy source for generating cooling effect. Solar energy is one of these low grade energy sources and with considering the fact that cooling demand increases with the intensity of solar radiation, solar refrigeration has been considered as a logical solution.

This thesis consists of two different simulation stages, in the first stage, a single effect lithium bromide absorption cooling system with constant cooling capacity is modeled and the effect of ambient and generator …

Learning To Become: An Exploration Of Transformative Faculty Development, Elizabeth Wilkins Dec 2015

Learning To Become: An Exploration Of Transformative Faculty Development, Elizabeth Wilkins

Theses and Dissertations

This multi-article dissertation explores the experience of becoming a professor who effectively facilitates students' identity formation. While the growing body of literature on student transformation suggests that faculty must transform themselves to authentically invite change in others, little research has been done on helping professors become mentors who facilitate students' movement toward their potential for meaningful contribution. To address this gap, this dissertation suggests a framework to facilitate transformative faculty development based on a review of the literature on learning as a process of becoming (Article #1). The major components of this framework are (a) facilitating meaningful engagement in communities …

Loss Aversion And Perspective Taking In The Sunk-Cost Fallacy, Veronika Rudd Tait Dec 2015

Loss Aversion And Perspective Taking In The Sunk-Cost Fallacy, Veronika Rudd Tait

Theses and Dissertations

The sunk-cost fallacy (SCF) occurs when an individual makes an investment with a low probability of a payoff because an earlier investment has already been made. It is considered an error because a rational decision should not factor in now-irretrievable investments, as they do not affect current outcome likelihoods. Previous research has measured the tendency to commit the SCF by using hypothetical scenarios in which participants must choose to make a future investment or not after making an initial investment. There are many theories as to why people commit the SCF. Loss aversion, which is the preference for uncertain over …

Methodology For Selecting The Column Configuration With Lowest Media Replacement Cost For Small Adsorption Systems, Artem Bausk Dec 2015

Methodology For Selecting The Column Configuration With Lowest Media Replacement Cost For Small Adsorption Systems, Artem Bausk

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The relative performance of three column configurations often used for adsorption systems serving small communities was evaluated in terms of which results in the lowest overall replacement cost. Replacement cost is the cost of fresh media and the transportation, labor, and material costs to replace the media. Both the adsorption capacity and the media replacement costs were modeled. The pore and surface diffusion model was utilized to simulate the fixed-bed adsorption and obtain the breakthrough curves, which were then normalized using the target effluent to influent concentration ratio (C/Co) and the mass transfer zone fraction (%MTZBT). …

Experimental Investigation And Thermal Modeling On Electro Discharge Drilling Of Pcd, Farnaz Nourbakhsh Dec 2015

Experimental Investigation And Thermal Modeling On Electro Discharge Drilling Of Pcd, Farnaz Nourbakhsh

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study presents an experimental investigation and finite element simulation of Electro Discharge Drilling (ED-Drilling) of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD). PCD has many outstanding properties including uniformly high hardness, high wear resistance and strong corrosion which are the main causes of widely using PCD. While PCD has many advantages and an important role in industrial applications, its high level of hardness and wear resistance cause this material to be difficult to form and machine by using traditional machining methods. EDM as a nontraditional machining process is an effective method among other non-traditional methods for PCDs due to its low cost and …

Practical Robust Geotechnical Design- Methodology And Applications, Sara Khoshnevisan Dec 2015

Practical Robust Geotechnical Design- Methodology And Applications, Sara Khoshnevisan

All Dissertations

This dissertation advances the robust geotechnical design methodology by offering improvements, which makes it more efficient and practical for the design of geotechnical systems. Robust geotechnical design (RGD) methodology seeks an optimal design, which is insensitive to, or robust against, the variation in the uncertain input parameters (called “noise factors”) by only adjusting the easy to control parameters (called “design parameters”). The main goal of robust design is to consider safety, cost and robustness simultaneously. Because the cost and the robustness are conflicting objectives, the multi-objective optimization that considers these two objectives while enforcing the safety constraint yields not a …

Iterative Design And Testing Of A Mobile Application To Support Food Consumption Monitoring And Decision Making, Melva James Dec 2015

Iterative Design And Testing Of A Mobile Application To Support Food Consumption Monitoring And Decision Making, Melva James

All Dissertations

Food overconsumption is a major contributor to weight gain leading to obesity. Constant exposure to larger amounts of food and beverage has caused many individuals to experience “portion distortion,” the perception that bigger portion sizes are appropriate for consumption at a single sitting. Independently and accurately changing this perception can be very difficult even if one has a desire to do so. In response to these observations, we developed and tested Picture-Perfect Portions, a mobile application designed to combat overconsumption, at the individual level, by leveraging the power of simple visualizations to help adults understand and adjust their food consumption …

Robust Model Development For Evaluation Of Existing Structures, Saurabh Prabhu Dec 2015

Robust Model Development For Evaluation Of Existing Structures, Saurabh Prabhu

All Dissertations

In the context of scientific computing, validation aims to determine the worthiness of a model in supporting critical decision making. This determination must occur given the imperfections in the mathematical representation resulting from the unavoidable idealizations of physics phenomena. Uncertainty in parameter values furthers the validation problems due to the inevitable lack of information about material properties, boundary conditions, loads, etc. which must be taken into account in making predictions about structural response. The determination of worthiness then becomes assessing whether an unavoidably imperfect mathematical model, subjected to poorly known input parameters, can predict sufficiently well in its intended purpose. …
