Hydromagnetic Flow And Heat Transfer Of Eyring-Powell Fluid Over An Oscillatory Stretching Sheet With Thermal Radiation, S. U. Khan, N. Ali Dec 2015

Hydromagnetic Flow And Heat Transfer Of Eyring-Powell Fluid Over An Oscillatory Stretching Sheet With Thermal Radiation, S. U. Khan, N. Ali

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

An analysis is carried out to investigate the magnetohydrodynamic flow and heat transfer in an unsteady flow of Eyring-Powell fluid over an oscillatory stretching surface. The radiation effects are also considered in energy equation. The flow is induced due to infinite elastic sheet which is stretched periodically back and forth in its own plane. Finite difference scheme is used to solve dimensionless partial differential equations. The effects of emerging parameters on both velocity and temperature profiles are illustrated through graphs. The results obtained by means of finite difference scheme are compared with earlier studies and found in excellent agreement.

The Shifted Jacobi Polynomial Integral Operational Matrix For Solving Riccati Differential Equation Of Fractional Order, A. Neamaty, B. Agheli, R. Darzi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, we have applied Jacobi polynomial to solve Riccati differential equation of fractional order. To do so, we have presented a general formula for the Jacobi operational matrix of fractional integral operator. Using the Tau method, the solution of this problem reduces to the solution of a system of algebraic equations. The numerical results for the examples presented in this paper demonstrate the efficiency of the present method.

Thermal Instability In A Horizontal Layer Of Walter’S (Model B') Visco-Elastic Nanofluid- A More Realistic Approach, Ramesh Chand, G. C. Rana

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Thermal instability in a horizontal layer of Walter’s (Model B') visco-elastic nanofluid is investigated for more realistic boundary conditions. The flux of volume fraction of nanoparticles is taken to be zero on the isothermal boundaries. The model used for nanofluid incorporates the effect of Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis. Perturbation method, normal mode technique and Galerkin method are used in the solution of the eigenvalue problem. Oscillatory convection has been ruled out for the problem under consideration. The influences of the Lewis number, modified diffusivity ratio and nanoparticle Rayleigh number on the stationary convection are shown both analytically and graphically.

Extension Formulas Of Lauricella’S Functions By Applications Of Dixon’S Summation Theorem, Ahmed A. Atash

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The aim of this research paper is to obtain two extension formulas for the first and second kind of Lauricella’s functions of three variables with the help of generalized Dixon’s summation theorem, which was obtained by Lavoie et al. In addition to this, two extension formulas for the second and third kind of Appell’s functions are obtained as a consequence of the above mentioned results . Furthermore, some transformation formulas involving Exton’s double hypergeometric series are obtained as an applications of our main results.

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, the local fractional variational iteration method is proposed to solve nonlinear partial differential equations within local fractional derivative operators. To illustrate the ability and reliability of the method, some examples are illustrated. A comparison between local fractional variational iteration method with the other numerical methods is given, revealing that the proposed method is capable of solving effectively a large number of nonlinear differential equations with high accuracy. In addition, we show that local fractional variational iteration method is able to solve a large class of nonlinear problems involving local fractional operators effectively, more easily and accurately, and …

Seir Model Of Seasonal Epidemic Diseases Using Ham, Nirmala P. Ratchagar, S. P. Subramanian

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

SEIR mathematical model of childhood diseases measles, chickenpox, mumps, rubella incorporate seasonal variation in contact rates due to the increased mixing during school terms compared to school holidays. Driven by seasonality these diseases are characterized by annual oscillations with variable contact rate which is a periodic function of time in years. Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) is considered in this paper to obtain a semi analytic approximate solution of non-linear simultaneous differential equations. Mathematica is used to carry out the computations. Results established through graphs show the validity and potential of HAM for amplitude of variation greater than zero. Also, when …

Soft-Sediment Deformation And Dune Collapse In The Navajo Sandstone, Colby Ford Dec 2015

Soft-Sediment Deformation And Dune Collapse In The Navajo Sandstone, Colby Ford

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Canyon Overlook Trail of Zion National Park follows an outcrop of Navajo Sandstone, which displays a uniquely well-exposed assemblage of features associated with failure of the lee face of a large eolian dune, and run-out over an expanse of interdune sediments downwind of that bedform. Exposed features include dramatic folds in the interdune succession and a stacked series of thrust sheets incorporating both interdune and overlying dune deposits. Thrust surfaces display consistent strikes, parallel to those of undeformed foresets, and incorporate zones of brittle failure and fluid deformation, including folds overturned in the direction of foreset dip. These features …

High-Resolution Correlation Of A Time-Bounded Unit Of The Pisco Formation, Peru, Daniel J. O'Hare Dec 2015

High-Resolution Correlation Of A Time-Bounded Unit Of The Pisco Formation, Peru, Daniel J. O'Hare

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Correlation of beds in the Pisco Basin across significant distances is problematic and has not yet been effectively achieved. I chose to examine an interval bounded by two time markers, an 40Ar/39Ar-dated white tuff at the base and an 40Ar/39Ar-dated tuff couplet at the top. This interval was chosen because of the continuity and excellent exposure of the tuff beds at six distinct locations in a linear transect 30 km long. Correlation of units was achieved through 40Ar/39Ar dating, lithology, sedimentary structures, and magnetic susceptibility. The vertical and lateral variability in lithology, fossil assemblages, structures, and sequences was examined in …

Period Change And Stellar Evolution Of Β Cephei Stars, Hilding R. Neilson, Richard Ignace Dec 2015

Period Change And Stellar Evolution Of Β Cephei Stars, Hilding R. Neilson, Richard Ignace

ETSU Faculty Works

The β Cephei stars represent an important class of massive star pulsators that probe the evolution of B-type stars and the transition from main sequence to hydrogen-shell burning evolution. By understanding β Cep stars, we gain insights into the detailed physics of massive star evolution, including rotational mixing, convective core overshooting, magnetic fields, and stellar winds, all of which play important roles. Similarly, modeling their pulsation provides additional information into their interior structures. Furthermore, measurements of the rate of change of pulsation period offer a direct measure of β Cephei stellar evolution. In this work, we compute state-of-the-art stellar evolution …

Computational Analysis Of The Sir Mathematical Model For The Dengue Fever, Joseph Phillip Diaz

Theses and Dissertations

Dengue fever is a disease affecting people in more than 100 countries. Here we consider a host and vector model for the transmission of dengue fever. This SIR model consists of three compartments of susceptible, infective and removed for host (human) and two compartments of susceptible and infective for vector (dengue mosquitos). These five compartments yield five coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). After non-dimensionalization, we have a system of three nonlinear ODEs. Reproductive number and two equilibrium points are calculated for various cases. Simulation is carried out for susceptible, infective and removed and the results are presented in graphical …

Design And Control Of A Bidirectional Dual Active Bridge Dc-Dc Converter To Interface Solar, Battery Storage, And Grid-Tied Inverters, Kenny George Dec 2015

Design And Control Of A Bidirectional Dual Active Bridge Dc-Dc Converter To Interface Solar, Battery Storage, And Grid-Tied Inverters, Kenny George

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

In order to further reduce the size of today’s power converters, wide bandgap semiconductor technologies are being explored. These devices, such as silicon carbide (SiC), have been shown to outperform their silicon counterparts when used in high frequency switching, high temperature, and high voltage applications. These properties make them highly desirable in the bidirectional dual active bridge power converter. Being an isolated converter topology, the dual active bridge employs a transformer to provide step-up/step-down functionality and galvanic isolation for the converter. Transformers, as well as other passive components such as inductors and capacitors may be reduced in size when higher …

Evaluation Of Alternative Intersections And Interchanges: Volume I—Roundabout Capacity And Rollover Analysis For Heavy Vehicles, Andrew P. Tarko, Mario Romero, Thomas Hall, Shaikh Ahmad Matin, Cristhian Lizarazo

JTRP Technical Reports

There is a recent trend of building roundabouts on high-speed roads, often with the considerable presence of heavy vehicles. With the increased presence of trucks on roundabouts, the issue of overturning has become a concern. Although some geometric, vehicle, and loading factors have been connected to rollover, the safety performance of roundabouts built on high-speed roads is not well understood due to their relative novelty. In addition, other concerns related to geometry, driver behavior, and environmental considerations may exist at roundabouts. This study examined roundabout circulatory superelevation, aggressive driver behavior, roundabout readability, and nighttime conditions in the context of heavy …

Simulations Of A New Response-Adaptive Biased Coin Design, Aleksandra Stein Dec 2015

Simulations Of A New Response-Adaptive Biased Coin Design, Aleksandra Stein

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Modern medical experiments accrue and treat patients--hence obtain treatment response data--throughout a trial. Designs which prospectively plan to modify patient allocation by leveraging accumulating data are response-adaptive randomization (RAR) designs. Many such designs attempt to balance the desire to bias assignment proportions towards a treatment which is performing better against the need to maintain randomization in the face of continued equipoise.

This dissertation consists of simulated investigations into frequentist and ethical properties of an new RAR biased coin design. Chapter 2 proposes a new adaptive design for phase III clinical trials, a modification of the 2001 Bandyopadhyay and Biswas biased …

Analysis Of Neuronal Sequences Using Pairwise Biases, Zachary Roth Dec 2015

Analysis Of Neuronal Sequences Using Pairwise Biases, Zachary Roth

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sequences of neuronal activation have long been implicated in a variety of brain functions. In particular, these sequences have been tied to memory formation and spatial navigation in the hippocampus, a region of mammalian brains. Traditionally, neuronal sequences have been interpreted as noisy manifestations of neuronal templates (i.e., orderings), ignoring much richer structure contained in the sequences. This paper introduces a new tool for understanding neuronal sequences: the bias matrix. The bias matrix captures the probabilistic tendency of each neuron to fire before or after each other neuron. Despite considering only pairs of neurons, the bias matrix captures the best …

The Impact Of Crystal Morphology On The Thermal Responses Of Ultrasonically-Excited Energetic Materials, J. K. Miller, J. O. Mares, I. E. Gunduz, Steven F. Son, Jeff Rhoads

Purdue Energetics Research Center Articles

The ability to detect explosive materials may be significantly enhanced with local increases in vapor pressure caused by an elevation of the materials'temperature. Recently, ultrasonic excitation has been shown to generate heat within plastic-bonded energetic materials. To investigate the impact of crystal morphology on this heating, samples of elastic binder are implanted with single ammonium perchlorate crystals of two distinct shape groups. Contact piezoelectric transducers are then used to excite the samples at ultrasonicfrequencies. The thermal responses of the crystals are recorded using infrared thermography, and the rate of heating is estimated. Surface temperature increases up to 15 °C …

Time Distortion In Bierce's "One Of The Missing" And Uroshevic's "Ракописот Од Китаб-Ан" ("The Manuscript From Kitab-An"), Kalina Maleska

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Time Distortion in Bierce's 'One of the Missing' and Uroshevic's 'Ракописот од Китаб-Ан' ('The Manuscript from Kitab-An')" Kalina Maleska examines the relationship between literature and astronomy in the context of time. The two stories share several common elements: they explore the possible manipulations of time in unexpected and extraordinary ways and come close to certain scientific explorations of time. For "One of the Missing," Albert Einstein's theory of relativity provides an interesting foundation for understanding Bierce's treatment of time. For The Manuscript of Kitab-An, the speculations of time travel starting from the Einstein-Rosen concept of the black …

Evaluation Of Bored Piles Load Capacity In Rock Bearing., M. Tarek, M. Bahr, S. Gad, A. Zaki

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Rock socketed bored piles are particularly advantageous for conditions in which rock is near the ground surface underlying weak layers. This paper aims to predicate the ultimate capacity of bored piles supported in rock using analytical and mathematically based graphical approaches. Data-base of pile load tests from three projects constructed in Abu-Dhabi city in UAE were used, and Finite Element Analysis using 2-D Plaxis axisymmetric model has been developed to simulate the behaviour of such piles. The ultimate load predicted from the FEM method is compared with that estimated from the theoretical approaches. The pile working load with the corresponding …

© 2015, El Barachi et al.; licensee Springer. Network virtualization is considered as a promising way to overcome the limitations and fight the gradual ossification of the current Internet infrastructure. The network virtualization concept consists in the dynamic creation of several co-existing logical network instances (or virtual networks) over a shared physical network infrastructure. We have previously proposed a service-oriented hierarchical business model for virtual networking environments. This model promotes the idea of network as a service, by considering the functionalities offered by different types of network resources as services of different levels – services that can be dynamically discovered, …
