Preparation And Characterization Of Stimuli-Responsive Star-Shaped Triblock Copolymers For Gene Delivery, Tianyuan Wu Dec 2015

Preparation And Characterization Of Stimuli-Responsive Star-Shaped Triblock Copolymers For Gene Delivery, Tianyuan Wu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Amphiphilic block copolymers with both a hydrophobic domain and a hydrophilic domain can thermodynamically self-assemble into ordered structures such as spherical micelles, worm-like micelles or vesicles in selective solvents which have great potential for biomedical applications such as drug/gene delivery. Stimuli-responsive amphiphilic block copolymers which can change morphology in response to internal or external stimulus have great potential to achieve controlled release of drugs or genes at specific sites. In this dissertation, two types of stimuli-responsive star-shaped triblock copolymers PEO-S(CKn)-PLA and PEO-(PDEAm)-PLA were synthesized and studied. Amphiphilic cationic star-shaped triblock copolymers with poly(ethylene oxide), poly(D,L-lactide), and poly(L-lysine arms) (PEO-S(CKn)-PLA) were …

Real-Time Virtual Teaching: Lessons Learned From A Case Study In A Rural School, Michael K. Barbour Dec 2015

Real-Time Virtual Teaching: Lessons Learned From A Case Study In A Rural School, Michael K. Barbour

Education Faculty Publications

Due to the challenges facing rural schools, many jurisdictions have resorted to the use of virtual school programs to provide curricular opportunities to their students. While the number of virtual schools that rely on synchronous instruction as a primary or significant method of delivery is quite small, there are some programs that do (and a growing number of virtual schools that use it with small groups or individuals). This case study examined the use of synchronous online instruction by one virtual school with students in a single rural school in Newfoundland and Labrador. The data from a variety of collection …

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Analyzing General-Purpose Computing Performance on GPU

Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) has become one of the most important components in modern computer systems. GPUs have evolved from a single -purpose graphic rendering hardware to a powerful processor that is capable of handling many different kinds of computing tasks. However, GPUs don’t perform well on every application, and it takes a lot of design effort to get good performance on a GPU.

This thesis aims to investigate the relative performance of a GPU vs. CPU. Design effort is held minimum for both CPU implementations and GPU implementations. Matrix multiplication, Advance Encryption …

Quantifying Temperature Sensitivity Of Soil Respiration Across A Range Of Semi-Arid Biomes, Michelle Nuanez Dec 2015

Quantifying Temperature Sensitivity Of Soil Respiration Across A Range Of Semi-Arid Biomes, Michelle Nuanez

Biology ETDs

Soils in semi-arid regions store approximately 10% of earths soil organic carbon, the substrate which microbes oxidize, resulting in the largest source of carbon to the atmosphere from terrestrial ecosystems. Semi-arid regions are expected to experience increased temperatures and altered precipitation regimes over the next 100 years, altering soil temperature and water, the two predominant drivers in soil respiration processes. In this study we quantify the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration in five semi-arid biomes ranging from desert grassland to ponderosa pine forest along an elevational/climate gradient in central New Mexico. We measured statistically similar temperature sensitivities in 4 of …

Feeding A Brown Midrib Corn Silage-Based Diet To Growing Beef Steers Improves Growth Performance And Economic Returns, C. S. Saunders, S. Y. Yang, J.-S. Eun, D. M. Feuz, D. R. Zobell

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

A feedlot experiment was performed to determine growth performance, ruminal fermentation characteristics, and economic returns for growing beef steers when fed a brown midrib corn silage-based total mixed ration (BMRT) compared with a conventional corn silage-based total mixed ration (CCST). Twenty-four Angus crossbred steers (initial body weight=258±23.2 kg) in individual pens were used in a completely randomized design (n=12). Intake of dry matter was not different between the treatments. Steers fed the BMRT tended to have greater average daily gain (1.54 vs. 1.42 kg d−1; P=0.09) and gain-to-feed ratio (0.165 vs. 0.146; P=0.07) compared with those fed the CCST. Feeding …

A Para-Clerical Approach To The Galileo Affair And To Science Vs. Religion, Maurice A. Finocchiaro Dec 2015

A Para-Clerical Approach To The Galileo Affair And To Science Vs. Religion, Maurice A. Finocchiaro

Philosophy Faculty Research

In 1633, the Inquisition condemned Galileo for defending Copernicus’s hypothesis of the earth’s motion and denying the scientific authority of Scripture. This ended the original controversy, but generated a new one that continues today, for example, about whether the condemnation proves the incompatibility between science and religion. Recently the Galileo affair has been studied by several scholars whom I label “Berkeley para-clericals,” chiefly philosopher Paul Feyerabend and historian John Heilbron. Their approach is distinctive: it views controversial topics involving the relationship between science and religion from a perspective that is secular-minded, but appreciative of religion, and yet conducted in the …

Lawson On Veblen On Social Ontology, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper discusses Lawson’s use of Veblen’s concept of ‘neoclassical economics’ and argument that the category of neoclassical economics should be jettisoned on the grounds that it obfuscates effective critique of mainstream economics. The paper links Lawson’s critique of closed systems and Veblen’s cumulative causation view by offering a reflexivity, feedback loop formulation of the latter aimed at overcoming the pre-Socratic dichotomy between Heraclitian and Parmenidean ontological thinking. The paper then reviews what this implies for three key social ontology doctrines: social reality as processual and highly transient; emergence and the appearance of novelty; the internal relatedness of social reality. …

The Myth Of A Secular Economy: Capitalism's Unarticulated Theology, Daniel F. Sebastian Dec 2015

The Myth Of A Secular Economy: Capitalism's Unarticulated Theology, Daniel F. Sebastian

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The discipline of modern economics has been categorized as based in mathematics and thus dealing only with facts. Religion, on the other hand, is considered one of the primary institutions in society that engenders different values. The stark separation between these two fields is typical of the modern fact-value distinction. The goal of this project is to provide, relying heavily upon Peter L. Berger, a detailed analysis of the value-laden social functions of religion and consider whether economics, specifically capitalism, also carries out these functions. The thesis blurs the lines between economics and religion by showing that capitalism engages in …

Coteaching In Secondary Schools, Carol A. Willard Dec 2015

Coteaching In Secondary Schools, Carol A. Willard

Dissertations - ALL

The use of coteaching as a means of supporting students with disabilities in the general education classroom is becoming more common. The literature base on the effectiveness of coteaching in elementary grade levels is well established; however, coteaching in secondary school is a less documented topic. Therefore, this study examines coteaching in secondary schools. Coteaching, as defined in this study, is one general and one special education teacher sharing instructional responsibilities for at least one group of students in one classroom for at least one instructional period. The research questions guiding the study focused on the models of coteaching used …

Simulation Of Lateral Migration And Sedimentation Of A Flexible Fiber In A Vertical Weak Shear Flow, Ali Ibrahim Neamah Neamah Dec 2015

Simulation Of Lateral Migration And Sedimentation Of A Flexible Fiber In A Vertical Weak Shear Flow, Ali Ibrahim Neamah Neamah

Masters Theses

This research is a thorough numerical investigation and critical analysis of lateral migration of a deformable particle settling in a vertical weak shear flow. Under the vertical weak shear fluid, the deformable particle may move either to the coagulation area, or the dispersion area, depending on Reynolds numbers, shear Reynolds number, fiber flexibility, and aspect ratio. In this study, a lattice Boltzmann equation is used to solve Navier-Stokes equation and a flexible particle method is employed to attack the problem of motion of a flexible fiber. A bounce-back rule is used to deal with moving boundaries interacting with fluids. Several …

The Seesaw Effect Of Winter Temperature Change On The Recruitment Of Cotton Bollworms Helicoverpa Armigera Through Mismatched Phenology, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Peijian Shi, Cang Hui, Xiaofei Cheng, Fang Ouyang, Feng Ge

Faculty Publications

Knowing how climate change affects the population dynamics of insect pests is critical for the future of integrated pest management. Rising winter temperatures from global warming can drive increases in outbreaks of some agricultural pests. In contrast, here we propose an alternative hypothesis that both extremely cold and warm winters can mismatch the timing between the eclosion of overwintering pests and the flowering of key host plants. As host plants normally need higher effective cumulative temperatures for flowering than insects need for eclosion, changes in flowering time will be less dramatic than changes in eclosion time, leading to a mismatch …

Globally, hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection is responsible for a large proportion of persons with liver disease, including cancer. The infection is highly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. West Africa was identified as a geographic origin of two HCV genotypes. However, little is known about the genetic composition of HCV populations in many countries of the region. Using conventional and next-generation sequencing (NGS), we identified and genetically characterized 65 HCV strains circulating among HCV-positive blood donors in Kumasi, Ghana. Phylogenetic analysis using consensus sequences derived from 3 genomic regions of the HCV genome, 5'-untranslated region, hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) and NS5B …

On The Asymptotic Derivation Of Winkler-Type Energies From 3d Elasticity, Andrés A. León Baldelli, Blaise Bourdin

Faculty Publications

We show how bilateral, linear, elastic foundations (i.e., Winkler foundations) often regarded as heuristic, phenomenological models, emerge asymptotically from standard, linear, three-dimensional elasticity. We study the parametric asymptotics of a non-homogeneous linearly elastic bi-layer attached to a rigid substrate as its thickness vanishes, for varying thickness and stiffness ratios. By using rigorous arguments based on energy estimates, we provide a first rational and constructive justification of reduced foundation models. We establish the variational weak convergence of the three-dimensional elasticity problem to a two-dimensional one, of either a “membrane over in-plane elastic foundation”, or a “plate over transverse elastic foundation”. These …
