Review: Teaching Nineteenth Century Russian Literature: Essays In Honor Of Robert L. Belknap, Irwin Weil Jan 2015

Review: Teaching Nineteenth Century Russian Literature: Essays In Honor Of Robert L. Belknap, Irwin Weil

Russian Language Journal

The late Robert L. Belknap was clearly one of the finest individuals and most creative teachers and scholars in the American profession of Slavic studies. His whole professional life encompassed both the academic and administrative sides of a long and outstanding professorial career at Columbia University. It is therefore entirely appropriate that the present volume consists of articles in the field of Russian literary criticism by some of the best and original literary critics, many of them Belknap's former students. Not only do the articles demonstrate a high level of literary insight—they also show the example of Belknap's remarkable creativity …

Falling Short On The Promise To English Learners: A Report On Year One Lcaps, Elvira G. Armas Ed.D, Magaly Lavadenz Ph.D., Laurie Olsen Ph.D.

Reports

California’s Local Control Funding Formula was signed into law in California in 2013 and allowed districts the flexibility to meet their student needs in locally appropriate manners. One year after its implementation, a panel of 26 reviewers, including educators, English Learner (EL) advocates, and legal services staff reviewed the Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs) to understand how districts employ this flexibility to address the needs of ELs. The report uses the English Learner Research-Aligned LCAP Rubrics with 10 focus areas, and reviews sample LCAPs from 29 districts, including districts with the highest numbers/percentages of English Learners in the state, …

Speech-Language Pathologists' Input To Toddlers In Early Intervention: A Pilot Study, Tanya Jean Willey Jan 2015

Speech-Language Pathologists' Input To Toddlers In Early Intervention: A Pilot Study, Tanya Jean Willey

Master's Theses and Capstones

Caregivers interacting with young children in natural settings have been found to provide language input that is in tune with the child's output in terms of mean length of utterance (MLU). Previous research suggests that caregivers provide language input within the child's proximal zone of language development, that is 2.0-3.0 morphemes ahead of their child's MLU. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate whether speech-language pathologists (SLP) working in early intervention tailor their input in the same way.

Communication interactions between six speech-language pathologists and their toddler aged clients between the ages of 28 and 33 months were …

The Russian Prepositions Перед, Против And Напротив: A Cognitive Linguistic Approach, Marika Kalyuga Jan 2015

The Russian Prepositions Перед, Против And Напротив: A Cognitive Linguistic Approach, Marika Kalyuga

Russian Language Journal

There is an assumption in cognitive linguistics that most non-spatial senses of a preposition and a case are derived from a common (usually spatial) sense through metaphoric extensions. The metaphoric extensions involve the understanding of a concept, the so-called “target,” in terms of a more simple, concrete concept called the “source” (Lakoff 1987; Boers 1996; Boers & Demecheleer 1998). For this reason, prepositions and cases with a similar spatial sense frequently develop similar non-spatial senses. For example, the Ancient Greek prepositions πρό ‘before’ and ἀντί ‘opposite’ are associated with nearly the same proto-scenario or idealized mental representation of events linked …

An Approach To Finding Good Anchor Nodes In Ontologies, Zhiqiang Wu Jan 2015

An Approach To Finding Good Anchor Nodes In Ontologies, Zhiqiang Wu

Dissertations

When matching different semantically tagged web service interfaces in the semantic web, it is often necessary to map one ontology to another ontology at runtime, on the fly. In many cases, knowing which nodes are the best nodes to start the matching process before the process begins (which are called anchor nodes) can make the ontology matching much easier. Traditionally, anchor node selection has been performed by humans. However, this is not practical for on-the-fly situations, occurring at runtime. Here we validate a methodology for determining anchor nodes automatically. Our results are shown to be successful, meaning that we were …

Latino Academic Resilience: Stories Of High Achieving Middle School Ells And The Teachers And Families That Help Them Succeed, Marcela Astudillo Jan 2015

Latino Academic Resilience: Stories Of High Achieving Middle School Ells And The Teachers And Families That Help Them Succeed, Marcela Astudillo

Open Access Dissertations

A general definition of resilience is an ability to thrive and succeed in a variety of areas related to our lives despite adversities we may face. The more specific term referred to as "academic resilience" deals with achieving academic success despite difficulties within an academic setting. Evidence shows that one of the demographic groups that experiences many challenges within academic settings and therefore who often struggle with academic success are English Language Learners. As compared to the regular education population of native speakers of English, ELLs have much higher high school dropout rates and have an overall more difficult time …

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of A Clinical Beliefs Questionnaire For Licensed Psychologists, Joseph F. Meyer Iii Jan 2015

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of A Clinical Beliefs Questionnaire For Licensed Psychologists, Joseph F. Meyer Iii

Open Access Dissertations

In recent decades, a specific class of dubious clinical practices has been labeled pseudoscientific and highlighted as a growing area of concern in psychology. Experts have identified numerous examples of pseudoscientific treatments, which are troubling for various ethical reasons. In light of the absence of research investigating the nature of professional beliefs and knowledge associated with scientifically substantiated and unsubstantiated clinical interventions, the primary objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire (viz., the Clinical Attitudes and Knowledge Questionnaire, or CAKQ) to appraise specific clinical knowledge domains and attitudes toward science among licensed, doctoral-level practitioners of clinical psychology. This …

Evaluation Of A Supplemental Kinesthetic-Based Reading Program For Disabled Students, Kenneth W. Hodges Jan 2015

Evaluation Of A Supplemental Kinesthetic-Based Reading Program For Disabled Students, Kenneth W. Hodges

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This research study addressed the need for an evaluation of the effectiveness of teacher-written supplemental reading lesson plans for elementary students with significant disabilities. The participating elementary school implemented the supplemental kinesthetic-based reading program in the 2010-2011 school year in order to improve the reading test scores of these disabled students. The theories of Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences and Maria Montessori's individualized learning process guided this research. The research question focused on exploring the effectiveness of the lesson plans. Participants included 6 students and their parents, 3 teachers, and 1 principal. Closed- and open-ended survey responses were collected from each …

Brother Bell’S Audience Design: Forms Of Address Mong Latter-Day Saint Young Adults, Joseph A. Stanley Jan 2015

Brother Bell’S Audience Design: Forms Of Address Mong Latter-Day Saint Young Adults, Joseph A. Stanley

Faculty Publications

In this paper, I analyze forms of address between Latter-day Saint (Mormon) young adults. In American English, title + last name (TLN) is typically used for older, superior, or unfamiliar addressees while first name (FN) is directed towards younger, subordinate, or familiar addressees (Brown & Gilman 1960). In the Mormon context, the TLN form is Brother or Sister followed by a surname (Fogg 1990). While many other studies analyze address forms between individuals with varying power or age differences (Brown & Ford 1961; Wood & Ryan 1991; Murray 2002; Dickey 1997), this study focuses those who are of similar age …

What Is A “Good Teacher”? Does “Good” Resonate With The Edtpa?, Dia Gary

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This study is multi-faceted. The research evolves from the perspective of eight individuals involved in educational settings as either parents or educators. These individuals represent cultural diversity with educational backgrounds from seven different countries. Participants responded to two questions based on what constitutes “good” in “good teacher” and a third question focused on the components of teachercandidate training. Primarily, the study foci are on the identifying characteristics of an effective teacher. Second, it establishes the components necessary in training programs to produce the effective teacher. Third, an analysis is conducted on the components of the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), to …

Features For Ranking Tweets Based On Credibility And Newsworthiness, Jacob W. Ross Jan 2015

Features For Ranking Tweets Based On Credibility And Newsworthiness, Jacob W. Ross

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

We create a robust and general feature set for learning to rank algorithms that rank tweets based on credibility and newsworthiness. In previous works, it has been demonstrated that when the training and testing data are from two distinct time periods, the ranker performs poorly. We improve upon previous work by creating a feature set that does not over fit a particular year or set of topics. This is critical given how people utilize social media changes as time progresses, and the topics discussed vary. In addition, we are constantly gaining new tweet data. Thus, it is important to be …

The Inconsistencies Of The Replaceability Argument, Caitlin M. Bauer Jan 2015

The Inconsistencies Of The Replaceability Argument, Caitlin M. Bauer

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, I will argue against Peter Singer's replaceability argument. I start by showing how Singer's ethical theory of preference-utilitarianism leads to his assertion that everyone should be vegetarian, and later his conclusion that some animals are replaceable. To refute Singer, I argue that death deprives sentient beings of pleasure, and any other good they are capable of experiencing, so death is harmful to animals. Next, I discuss one last claim central to Singer's replaceability argument, that merely sentient animals are not the same individual between periods of consciousness because they have no memory or psychological connections. I refute …

Automatic Emotion Identification From Text, Wenbo Wang Jan 2015

Automatic Emotion Identification From Text, Wenbo Wang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

People's emotions can be gleaned from their text using machine learning techniques to build models that exploit large self-labeled emotion data from social media. Further, the self-labeled emotion data can be effectively adapted to train emotion classifiers in different target domains where training data are sparse.

Emotions are both prevalent in and essential to most aspects of our lives. They influence our decision-making, affect our social relationships and shape our daily behavior. With the rapid growth of emotion-rich textual content, such as microblog posts, blog posts, and forum discussions, there is a growing need to develop algorithms and techniques for …

Expectant Fathers, Abortion, And Embryos, Dara Purvis Jan 2015

Expectant Fathers, Abortion, And Embryos, Dara Purvis

Faculty Scholarship

One thread of abortion criticism, arguing that gender equality requires that men be allowed to terminate legal parental status and obligations, has reinforced the stereotype of men as uninterested in fatherhood. As courts facing disputes over stored pre-embryos weigh the equities of allowing implantation of the pre-embryos, this same gender stereotype has been increasingly incorporated into a legal balancing test, leading to troubling implications for ART and family law.

An Analysis Of Undergraduate Creative Writing Students'writing Processes: Gauging The Workshop Models' Effectiveness Through The Lens Of Genre Theories, John Chrisman Jan 2015

An Analysis Of Undergraduate Creative Writing Students'writing Processes: Gauging The Workshop Models' Effectiveness Through The Lens Of Genre Theories, John Chrisman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current approaches to teaching creative writers the ways to success in creative writing courses consist largely of workshop style classes. While workshops often vary from class to class in style, generally a workshop will consist of a group of writers, led by a mentor/instructor, who exchange drafts and provide reader and writer focused feedback to the author. Yet because the workshop approach has not been the subject of close empirical study, it is unclear whether it is an effective pedagogy. This thesis serves two purposes. First, it presents an argument for new research into creative writing pedagogy and creative writers' …

A Quasi-Experimental Study On The Impact Of Explicit Instruction Of Science Text Structures On Eighth-Grade English Learners' And Non-English Learners' Content Learning And Reading Comprehension In Three Inclusive Science Classrooms, Jelitza Rivera Jan 2015

A Quasi-Experimental Study On The Impact Of Explicit Instruction Of Science Text Structures On Eighth-Grade English Learners' And Non-English Learners' Content Learning And Reading Comprehension In Three Inclusive Science Classrooms, Jelitza Rivera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the impact of explicit instruction of science comparison and contrast macro text structures plus micro text structures on the content learning, sentence comprehension, and reading comprehension of eighth-grade English Learners (ELs) and non-English Learners (non-ELs) in three inclusive science classrooms. Although the results of this study did not show significant differences between groups in sentence comprehension, reading comprehension, or science content learning, the treatment group increased and maintained their science content learning scores over time, while the scores of the comparison group declined from post-test to delayed post-test. In addition, the …

Separate Phonemes /Ɔr/ Merging? The Cord-Card Merger In Real-Time, Joseph A. Stanley Jan 2015

Separate Phonemes /Ɔr/ Merging? The Cord-Card Merger In Real-Time, Joseph A. Stanley

Faculty Publications

In sociolinguistics, when analyzing language change across time, studies in apparent time are the norm with the assumption that language does not change in adult speech (Chambers & Trudgill 1998). However, some research has provided evidence that change does occur within the individual during their lifetime (Prince 1987; Harrington, Palethorpe & Watson 2000). This study shows further evidence by analyzing the cord-card merger over 40 years of speech from a Utah native.

Two mergers combine what was historically a three-way distinction of /or/, /ɔr/, and /ɑr/ to just two, with /ɔr/ either merging upward in the hoarse-horse merger, or downward …

From Bibles To Biomarkers: The Future Of The Dsm And Forensic Psychiatric Diagnosis, Teneille R. Brown Jan 2015

From Bibles To Biomarkers: The Future Of The Dsm And Forensic Psychiatric Diagnosis, Teneille R. Brown

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Given its importance to the law, it is regrettable that judges and lawyers do not fully understand how the DSM is constructed, and the bedrock of values on which it rests. As evidence of this, lawyers and judges often refer to the DSM as the “psychiatric bible.” This language is both fascinating and perplexing. This Article will attempt to correct the notion that the DSM is a legal “psychiatric bible” by explaining how it is created and used by the medical field. It will also provide a few reasons why the law may have come to view it as a …

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivational Factors That Influence Students’ Interest In Critical Languages Learning, Elena Nikolayevna Atitsogbui Jan 2015

Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivational Factors That Influence Students’ Interest In Critical Languages Learning, Elena Nikolayevna Atitsogbui

Education

The present study compared and analyzed intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors that influence students’ interest to learn critical language. The study was based on comparison of two intrinsic motivational factors, Interest and Choice, and three extrinsic motivational factors, Effort, Travel goals, and Professional goals, between critical language and commonly taught language learners. The study also examined the role of self-efficacy in learning critical and commonly taught languages. There were 573 students enrolled in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, French, German, and Spanish classes in the spring semester in 2013 who participated in this study. The participants attended five public universities and three …

From Homo Stupidus To Homo Sapiens: Changing And Reaffirming The Paradigm Of Human Uniqueness Through Neandertal Descriptions, Megan Lynn Even Jan 2015

From Homo Stupidus To Homo Sapiens: Changing And Reaffirming The Paradigm Of Human Uniqueness Through Neandertal Descriptions, Megan Lynn Even

English

Neandertal interpretation is changing the paradigm of human uniqueness, but exactly how needs to be examined. This paper provides a qualitative analysis of how Neandertal descriptions embed long-held cultural attitudes and how those cultural attitudes are being challenged and, in some ways, reaffirmed through rhetoric. A rhetorical analysis was performed on the second and third editions of a widely used physical anthropology textbook, Clark Spencer Larsen’s Our Origins. Both editions rhetorically favor a view of Neandertals as more similar to than different from us, a view which appears at odds with the disciplinary preference. Larsen appeals to the disciplinary preference …

Implications Of Translation: Examining English Word Patterns In A First-Year Spanish University Textbook, Alyssa Renae Miller Jan 2015

Implications Of Translation: Examining English Word Patterns In A First-Year Spanish University Textbook, Alyssa Renae Miller

English

In this study, I examined Vistas, a first-year Spanish university textbook, for its use of Greco-Latinate and Anglo-Saxon words as English translations. Using David Corson’s work as a starting point, I analyzed a foreign language textbook, expanding upon his list of texts organized by their percentage of Greco-Latinate words. By analyzing this one textbook, I hoped to inspire others to question the language preferences being instilled in students. My results indicated a nearly equal distribution of Greco-Latinate and Anglo-Saxon words, but the textbook authors rarely supplied multiple translations with both Greco-Latinate and Anglo-Saxon options. This initial study suggests a move …
