Assessment And Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Latino Children, Gesenia S. Sloan-Peña Jan 2015

Assessment And Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Latino Children, Gesenia S. Sloan-Peña

Theses and Dissertations

There is an increase in the number of children who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. However, significant racial and ethnic disparities exist in the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder. Based on the literature, Latino children appear to be under diagnosed or misdiagnosed with other psychological disorders rather than autism spectrum disorder. In addition, Latino children are typically diagnosed at a later age than their White peers. There is almost no research devoted to the assessment of autism spectrum disorder with young Latino children and there is insufficient research related to cultural perceptions of symptoms which can influence parental …

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the Computerized Memory Interference Test (CMIT), a derivative of the Picture Memory Interference Test (PMIT) was assessed for reliability, validity and internal consistency with a primary Spanish-speaking sample. Five hypotheses were formulated and tested. For the first hypothesis correlational studies assessing relationships between the CMIT scores and those of the WMS-III, Visual Reproduction subtests were used to establish convergent validity. Hypotheses two and three, produced correlational studies to assess relationships between the CMIT scores and those of the RAVLT and WAIS-III Block Design, Vocabulary and Matrix Resonating subtests. To test the fourth hypothesis, known-group methods were used …

Redefining Synchronous Learning For The 21st Century: A Descriptive Case Study To Examine Multi-Channel Synchronous Online Communication And Critical Thinking, Mary Wegner Jan 2015

Redefining Synchronous Learning For The 21st Century: A Descriptive Case Study To Examine Multi-Channel Synchronous Online Communication And Critical Thinking, Mary Wegner

Theses and Dissertations

Students in the 21st century seek connection with each other through synchronous online avenues, yet the education community does not embrace the use of synchronous online tools within the formal process of schooling. This creates a disconnect between the way that students learn outside of school and the way that they are schooled. In addition to matching the communication patterns of students, synchronous online tools provide opportunities for participants to communicate using a number of channels (audio, text, and interactive media) within a single communication environment. An important and useful perspective in this regard is to view the multi-channel environment …

The Role Of The Chief Executive Officer: Unlocking The Full Potential Of Women Leaders, Pamela A. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative research study examined the role of the chief executive officer (CEO) in achieving an inclusive environment, specifically reviewing the messaging and actions of the CEO and how they impact executive women. Data were gathered from 15 executive women through interviews with predetermined, semi-structured questions. This study provides evidence that CEOs can create an inclusive environment by instilling an atmosphere of mutual respect, openly listening and valuing diverse perspectives, and encouraging healthy dialogue and debate. Internal competition, an imbalance of power, and perceived bias on the part of the CEO hindered participants from feeling like equal partners in the …

Practices That Promote Parent Engagement In An Urban Elementary School: A Phenomenological Study Of Latino Parents Of English Language Learners, Maria M. Morales-Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

From 2007-2012 at Hubble Elementary School, located in Southern California, there has been a consistent population of approximately 50% English Language Learners (ELLs). Parents of the ELL students present a challenge because schools have a hard time engaging them in school activities and in the decision-making processes. The purpose of this phenomenological study was twofold: (a) to explore the perception of Latino parents of ELLs regarding the concept of parent engagement and (b) to examine the best practices related to parent engagement and major barriers that prevented them from being active participants in school activities and decision making processes at …

The Relationships Among Situational Leadership[Copyright Symbol] Ii, Emotional Intelligence And Disc[Copyright Symbol] Behavior, Margaretta Underhill

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"What makes an effective leader? This question is often asked and while the specific ingredients of effective leadership may be hard to identify, the absence of effective leadership can be painfully clear. Many problems facing professionals, administrators and global leaders, indeed, those who lead in any situation, could be solved through more effective leadership strategies. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationships among the theory of Situational Leadership ® II, the DiSC® theory of behavioral dimensions and the Salovey & Mayer 1990 construct of emotional intelligence (Blanchard, P. EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"In November of 2014, we celebrated the 100th year anniversary of the establishment of the National Communication Association (NCA). It is important to examine the history of the NCA from as many angles and as perspectives as possible to fully appreciate where the NCA is today and how it got here. This thesis is intended to add yet another historical perspective to the NCA, reflecting the importance of the female presidents of the association. The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: to conduct a numeric analysis on the genders of the NCA presidents and to note the contributions and importance …

Privacy policies are verbose, difficult to understand, take too long to read, and may be the least-read items on most websites even as users express growing concerns about information collection practices. For all their faults, though, privacy policies remain the single most important source of information for users to attempt to learn how companies collect, use, and share data. Likewise, these policies form the basis for the self-regulatory notice and choice framework that is designed and promoted as a replacement for regulation. The underlying value and legitimacy of notice and choice depends, however, on the ability of users to understand …

Exploring Hierarchical Visualization Designs Using Phylogenetic Trees, Shaomeng Li, R. Jordan Crouser, Garth Griffin, Connor Gramazio, Hans-Jörg Schulz, Hank Childs, Remco Chang

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Ongoing research on information visualization has produced an ever-increasing number of visualization designs. Despite this activity, limited progress has been made in categorizing this large number of information visualizations. This makes understanding their common design features challenging, and obscures the yet unexplored areas of novel designs. With this work, we provide categorization from an evolutionary perspective, leveraging a computational model to represent evolutionary processes, the phylogenetic tree. The result — a phylogenetic tree of a design corpus of hierarchical visualizations — enables better understanding of the various design features of hierarchical information visualizations, and further illuminates the space in which …

The Piegan View Of The Natural World, 1880-1920, Rosalyn R. Lapier Jan 2015

The Piegan View Of The Natural World, 1880-1920, Rosalyn R. Lapier

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This dissertation is a new interpretation of the stories told by the Piegan people (now known as the Blackfeet) from 1880-1920, about their relationship with the natural world. It is a history of the transition to reservation life, the economy of the reservation, individual Piegan who told stories, the ethnographers who recorded the stories and what those stories tell us about Piegan views of the natural world. It is a blend of different methodologies within history: archival research, ethnohistory, oral history and first-person narrative. This new interpretation argues that although the transition to reservation life was difficult, the Piegan worked …

Stages Of Change Theory Applied To Self-Critical Thinking And Fear Of Compassion: A Brief Psycho-Educational Intervention, Meghan Theresa Gill Jan 2015

Stages Of Change Theory Applied To Self-Critical Thinking And Fear Of Compassion: A Brief Psycho-Educational Intervention, Meghan Theresa Gill

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Self-critical thinking has been identified as a trans-diagnostic feature of several forms of psychopathology, including depression, and anxiety (Gilbert & Proctor 2006). Recent research has found that developing self-compassion skills reduces symptoms of distress and correlates with beneficial outcomes (Barnard & Curry, 2011). Unfortunately, it also appears that some who experience high levels of self-criticism also experience a fear of compassion (i.e., a resistance to soothing and care when directed toward the self or when received from others). Fear of compassion has been identified as a barrier to engagement in, and efficacy of psychological treatment (Gilbert, McEwan, Matos, & Rivis, …

IPE: Interprofessional Healthcare Education (IPE) competencies provide the criteria against which to measure the capacity and capability of fully collaborative healthcare teams to learn and work together. Significant work already exists in the determination of IPE competencies across all disciplines. Although there is still a lack of agreement on a single set of shared core competencies, successive competency iterations enhance its development. IPE competencies need to take into account local and cultural contexts as recommended by WHO, (2010). Here we present a collaborative process that builds on existing competency development, assessing additional academic IPE needs. Core competencies: After the development …

School of Psychology

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often characterized as having social engagement and language deficiencies, but a sparing of visuospatial processing and short-term memory (STM), with some evidence of supranormal levels of performance in these domains. The present study expanded on this evidence by investigating the observational learning of visuospatial concepts from patterns of covariation across multiple exemplars. METHOD: Child and adult participants with ASD, and age-matched control participants, viewed multishape arrays composed from a random combination of pairs of shapes that were each positioned in a fixed spatial arrangement. RESULTS: After this passive exposure phase, a posttest …

The Ethics Of Mourning: The Role Of Material Culture And Public Politics In The 'Book Of The Duchess' And The 'Pearl' Poem, Tarren Andrews Jan 2015

The Ethics Of Mourning: The Role Of Material Culture And Public Politics In The 'Book Of The Duchess' And The 'Pearl' Poem, Tarren Andrews

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This project is a socio-historic analysis of two late 14th century dream visions: Chaucer’s Book of the Duchess and the Pearl poem. Utilizing Robert Pogue Harrison’s concept of objectifying grief through ritualized communal mourning, this thesis examines the ways in which mourning literature functioned as consolatory device, and a form of public performance for the powerful patrons who commissioned the pieces. By engaging with pre-existing communities of grief, material culture, and courtly discourse these poems perform the work of mourning while simultaneously enacting modes of public performativity that stress the ethics of grieving, and suggest that, for royal patrons, …

On The Trail Of Student Participants: Identifying Barriers To Hunting And Developing A Hunter Recruitment Profile For College Students In Kentucky, Justin Dean Kurtz

Online Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several decades the number of individuals participating in hunting has decreased dramatically. This issue is important as hunting plays a major role in the US economy, is also the basis for the modern model of wildlife conservation, and can serve as a conduit for individuals to experience nature.

The purpose of this research was to identify barriers to hunting for college students, as well as identify lifestyle factors that can be used to create a profile for college students who are ideal for hunter recruitment efforts. Students at Eastern Kentucky University, Northern Kentucky University, and Western Kentucky …
