Adoption And The Use Of Self-Disclosure : A Qualitative Inquiry Of The Clincial Professional, Heather L. Smith-Jackson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

One of the intentional purposes of this study was to expand upon the limited research that is offered from a clinical perspective regarding self disclosure, but with a concentration on adopted mental health professionals. This study: explored the nature of therapeutic relationship, investigated continued controversial topic of self disclosure and explored specifically adoption identity formation and self disclosure grounded in social constructivism.

Twelve female participants who identified as mental health professionals completed in person interviews. The goal was to recruit 16 participants evenly divided between clinicians who were adopted and non adopted. However because of limitations, the sample consisted of …

Richard Prince, Author Of The Catcher In The Rye: Transforming Fair Use Analysis, Brockenbrough A. Lamb

Law Student Publications

This comment argues that fair use analysis should be reorganized from a disjointed four-factor morass into a straightforward two-part analysis that incorporates and clarifies the purpose of each of the four factors. Such a structure recognizes the role transformative use plays within the fair use doctrine as a whole. The comment then applies this process to a potential fair use defense for Richard Prince's The Catcher in the Rye.

Examining Healthy Food Accessibility In Baton Rouge, Louisiana Using A Huff-Modified 2sfca Method, Xuan Kuai

LSU Master's Theses

Food accessibility refers to people’s ability to access the service of food providers. Disparities in healthy food accessibility have long been a public health concern. This study proposes a new approach modified from the popular 2-Step Floating Catchment Area (2SFCA) method to measure spatial access. By incorporating a self-adaptive kernel density function extracted from the Huff Model, the proposed new method is termed the Huff-modified 2SFCA method. It is then applied to measure the healthy food accessibility in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The research accounts for the economically disadvantaged groups that may walk or depend on public transit for …

The purpose of this study is to compare the computer generated facial averages of Korean adults with Chinese and Houstonian Caucasian faces using a three-dimensional surface imaging system. Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional images of Korean adults (Seoul, Korea) with Class I malocclusion were captured using the 3dMDTMface, which combines structured light and stereo-photogrammetry techniques. The images of 138 Koreans were processed to generate average male and female facial shells using Rapidform 2006 Plus Pack 2 software. The average Korean facial shells were superimposed and compared to the average shells of Chinese adults (Xi’an, China) and Caucasian adults (Houston, Texas) from …

“A Thrice Told Tale”: William Wordsworth’S Chaucer Translations As Works Of Romantic Medievalism, Rachel Lee Landers Jan 2015

“A Thrice Told Tale”: William Wordsworth’S Chaucer Translations As Works Of Romantic Medievalism, Rachel Lee Landers

All ETDs from UAB

Throughout the course of his career William Wordsworth created four translations of Geoffrey Chaucer’s works. Although on the surface these translations appear to be nothing more than Wordsworth trying his hand at translating Chaucer, his compositions are far more complex. Within the body of all four of his Chaucer translations, Wordsworth makes changes to Chaucer’s language choices, spelling, the meter, and the poetic form so that his versions more closely resemble his own poetry. Additionally, he also adds extra content into his translations so that his works will sound more like his own poetry. By changing Chaucer’s texts in the …

Neural Correlates Of Verb Argument Structure Processing, Svetlana Malyutina Jan 2015

Neural Correlates Of Verb Argument Structure Processing, Svetlana Malyutina

Theses and Dissertations

Verb argument structure (VAS) is pivotal to sentence production and comprehension, since it determines participant roles, as well as their grammatical form and syntactic position in a sentence. Neural correlates of VAS processing have mainly been studied in terms of the number of arguments. Data on the neural and behavioral effects of other VAS characteristics are limited, whereas they would have implications for behavioral and brain stimulation treatments of language disorders.

The present research investigated behavioral and neural effects of three understudied VAS characteristics (number of subcategorization options, number of thematic options and number of number-of-argument options) in single-word-level and …

Latino Family Childcare Providers’ Beliefs, Attitudes, And Practices Related To Promotion Of Healthy Behaviors Among Preschool Children: A Qualitative Study, Ana C. Lindsay, Judith A. Salkeld, Mary L. Greaney, Faith D. Sands

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Background. The continuing rise of obesity among Latinos is a public health concern with an immediate need for early prevention. Changes in family structures have increased demand and reliance for child care for young children. Latino children are the fastest-growing segment of the child population in the United States, and research shows that Latino families use preschools and day care centers much less than those of other ethnic groups, apparently because of cultural preferences for family-like care. Objectives. Given that many low income Latino children attend family child care homes (FCCHs), there is a need to explore the …

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Background: Racial and ethnic disparities in physical activity (PA) are evident, with non-Hispanic Black and Mexican American children engaging in less vigorous activity than non-Hispanic White children. Collaborating with public health programs serving at-risk populations, such as the WIC program may be an effective way to promote the development of healthful PA behaviors among low-income preschool children and families. This paper explores WIC staff perceptions, attitudes, barriers, and facilitators related to PA levels and behaviors among low-income Latino preschool children and families, as well as the role the WIC program may play in promoting PA among low-income populations.

Settled Debate Or Second Wave? : Clinical Social Workers' Roles In Treatment With Youth Who Take Adhd Drugs, Rachel B. Reed

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this exploratory study was to gain a deeper understanding of social workers' roles in treating children who take attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drugs. The study used semi-structured in-person and telephone interviews with twelve licensed clinical social workers to gather qualitative data about their experiences with children and families of children diagnosed with ADHD and their reflections on their roles in treatment, in particular those regarding medication prescribed to mitigate the child's ADHD symptoms. The findings suggested that social workers experienced difficulty teasing out ADHD from issues known to commonly co-occur as well as from a history of …

The Role Of Mother Tongue In Therapy For Limited English Proficiency Individuals : Sense Of Self, Emotional Expression And The Therapy Relationship, Maria F. Plazas Jan 2015

The Role Of Mother Tongue In Therapy For Limited English Proficiency Individuals : Sense Of Self, Emotional Expression And The Therapy Relationship, Maria F. Plazas

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Language fundamentally shapes an individual's identity and worldview. It is a principal component in the development of self, identity, and how relate with others. Individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) who immigrate to the U.S and learn English as adults must learn a new language. This process allows the individual to adapt to and survive in their new environment while they simultaneously experience a sense of loss of the original self and mother tongue. When these individuals seek treatment, they may not have a choice in the language used, and internally, may move between languages. Theory suggests that this can …

In The Space Of The Father : Father Images, Emptiness, And Father Mirroring In Father Absent Men, Frank P. Tisano Jan 2015

In The Space Of The Father : Father Images, Emptiness, And Father Mirroring In Father Absent Men, Frank P. Tisano

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This is an empirical, psychoanalytic inquiry designed to uncover what exists in the space for "father" when men grow up father absent. I interviewed 10 father absent men to find out how they conceptualized their personal representations of father and whether the conjured images played a material role in their lives. In light of the interviews, I contend that, regardless of circumstance, intrapsychic space exists for father. Building on Green (2004), I argue that father absent men have a combination of positive and negative space for father. Positive space is filled principally with directly experienced memories, and stories as recounted …

The community of Azerbaijani immigrants in the United States, which is the subject of our proposed study, is a pretty recent phenomenon. Most Azerbaijani-Americans have immigrated to the United States mainly from Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia or Turkey. Azerbaijani immigration and integration in the United States have not been documented and studied thoroughly. There is no population survey that provides information of any kind on the attitudes and opinions of Azerbaijani Americans. Based on the survey conducted among sample of 103 Azerbaijani immigrants, this paper aims to provide the profile of the Azerbaijani community, socio-cultural characteristics, assess the immigrant’s identification with …

Contributions Of The Cognitive, Affective And Linguistic Domains To Strategy Use And Degree Of Strategy Use To Effective Reading Performance, Seyed Hassan Talebi, Behnaz Seifallahpur Jan 2015

Contributions Of The Cognitive, Affective And Linguistic Domains To Strategy Use And Degree Of Strategy Use To Effective Reading Performance, Seyed Hassan Talebi, Behnaz Seifallahpur

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

According to Oxford (1990), different learner variables affect the choice of learning strategy. It was also found that effective L2 readers know how to use strategies to foster reading comprehension and ineffective readers have little awareness of strategies to read effectively (Yang, 2002). This study investigates the contribution of three relatively important variables and their components (namely, the cognitive domain or awareness and use of strategies, the linguistic domain or general English proficiency level, and the affective domain or attitude toward reading in L2), to reading strategy use in English. The second purpose of the study is to find out …

Reconsidering The Influence Of Islam On Yoruba Cultural Heritage, 1930-1987, Akeem Abiodun Oladiti

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Previous studies on the activities of Islam have focused on the contribution of the religion to state building (Last, 1967, p. 4 ), the nineteenth century jihad (Smith, 1961, p. 45) and the phenomenal growth of Islam during the colonial period (Gbadamosi, 1978, p. 77). However, no specific attention has been paid to how Islam affected Yoruba culture negatively with specific focus on the area of religion education and language. This study intends to fill this obvious gap in the historiography of influential cultural invasion of Islam from 1930, when colonial political structures allowed the Muslims to maintain a physical …

The Proportionality Standard And Constitutional Culture: A Comparative Analysis Of Rights Adjudication In Canada And The French Republic, James Peter Barry Jan 2015

The Proportionality Standard And Constitutional Culture: A Comparative Analysis Of Rights Adjudication In Canada And The French Republic, James Peter Barry

LLM Theses

It has been suggested that the migration of proportionality as a standard of constitutional review is bringing about a degree of convergence in rights norms across common and civil law jurisdictions. While scholars have noted its potential to shape rights norms in legal systems into which it is incorporated, few have analysed the ways in which proportionality is affected by the constitutional culture in which it is received. This thesis is a comparative analysis of the application of proportionality in Canada and the French Republic. It sheds light on the extent to which the operation of that standard is affected …

Early Contexts Of Learning: Family And Community Socialization During Infancy And Toddlerhood, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lixin Ren, Jill Brown Jan 2015

Early Contexts Of Learning: Family And Community Socialization During Infancy And Toddlerhood, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lixin Ren, Jill Brown

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The contexts of early learning and socialization are diverse and complex but not without some predictability. The tension between predictability and variation fascinates researchers interested in childhood and culture and motivates careful exploration of different developmental niches to better understand socialization during infancy, toddlerhood, and early childhood. Contexts of early socialization vary in the people and activities present, and the beliefs and norms of caregivers and daily companions. The chapter utilizes anthropological constructs (household structure and composition, settlement patterns and subsistence level, mothers’ workload, gender division of labor, intimacy levels between husbands and wives, and cultural roles and norms pertaining …

As a result of such mission work, and the replication or expansion of churches from the European countries of origin of Canadian …

Physicians' Perceptions Of Cultural Competence In Health Care, Andrea L. Abercrombie Jan 2015

Physicians' Perceptions Of Cultural Competence In Health Care, Andrea L. Abercrombie

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Health care disparities continue to impact racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. These disparities may become even more predominant as the population of immigrants and racial and ethnic minorities increases in the country. Health care policymakers, administrators, accreditation bodies, and academia support the practice of cultural competence as a strategy to reduce both health and health care disparities among racial and ethnic minority populations. Yet, although cultural competence strategies have been developed and supported, they are often not implemented by physicians. Researchers need to explore physicians' perspectives of cultural competence in order to increase physician engagement and inform …

Energy Access For The "Powerless": The Role Of Relational Connectivity Between Entrepreneurs And Private Capital Investors, Michael E. Desa Jan 2015

Energy Access For The "Powerless": The Role Of Relational Connectivity Between Entrepreneurs And Private Capital Investors, Michael E. Desa

Student Scholarship

Although $1.6 trillion was invested in 2013 in global energy, of which $254 billion was in renewable energy, small power producer (SPP) entrepreneurs that focused their operations on the 1.4 billion powerless populations received a trifling $2.2 billion--less than $2 per person and 1.37% of overall investment. Prevailing research details policy methods, finance mechanisms, and business models intended to attract private capital and enlarge energy access; however, the nominal investment levels signify that private capital remains uninterested. This qualitative study used a grounded theory approach to discover the role of interaction experiences between SPP entrepreneurs and investors and the factors …

Competition Expressed: Marking Places Within Rural And Urban Landscapes, Ralph J. Hartley, Sharon L. Kennedy Jan 2015

Competition Expressed: Marking Places Within Rural And Urban Landscapes, Ralph J. Hartley, Sharon L. Kennedy

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The extent to which marking places with images, symbols and/or script on a landscape reflect the dynamics of a socio-economic environment continues to be a subject of interest in social science. Places become socio-culturally meaningful often because of the content of the markings on non-portable surfaces. In some contexts the information content of the markings reveal a perception of propriety when competition for space or other resources between groups and non-kin related individuals characterizes a social environment. In other contexts the content of markings reflect competition between individuals for resources, status, or prestige. Urban environments, dense with diverse human activities, …

The Lady On Angel Hill: Mary Jane Folsom And Movement In The Nineteenth Century St. Croix River Valley, Taylor M. Yetter

Departmental Honors Projects

Mary Jane Folsom’s life in the St. Croix River Valley demonstrates the previously uninvestigated complexities of life on the American Frontier in the nineteenth century. Previous scholars of the Frontier have all assumed the traditional East to West model of movement, but this model fails to recognize the many directions people took to reach their final destinations or the influences they brought with them. Before further research is conducted on the American Frontier, scholars must answer the question of how people, objects, and ideas actually travelled through the Frontier. This paper uses Mary Jane’s correspondence with her family to investigate …
