Persons, Houses, And Material Possessions: Second Spanish Period St. Augustine Society, Daniel Velasquez Jan 2015

Persons, Houses, And Material Possessions: Second Spanish Period St. Augustine Society, Daniel Velasquez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

St. Augustine in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was a prosperous, multi-ethnic community that boasted trade connections throughout the Atlantic world. Shipping records demonstrate that St. Augustine had access to a wide variety of goods, giving residents choices in what they purchased, and allowing them to utilize their material possessions to display and reinforce their status. Likewise, their choice of residential design and location allowed them to make statements in regards to their place in the social order. St. Augustine was a unique city in the Spanish Empire; the realities of frontier living meant that inter-ethnic connection were …

A Framework For Interoperability On The United States Electric Grid Infrastructure, Stuart Laval Jan 2015

A Framework For Interoperability On The United States Electric Grid Infrastructure, Stuart Laval

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the United States (US) electric grid has been a stable one-way power delivery infrastructure that supplies centrally-generated electricity to its predictably consuming demand. However, the US electric grid is now undergoing a huge transformation from a simple and static system to a complex and dynamic network, which is starting to interconnect intermittent distributed energy resources (DERs), portable electric vehicles (EVs), and load-altering home automation devices, that create bidirectional power flow or stochastic load behavior. In order for this grid of the future to effectively embrace the high penetration of these disruptive and fast-responding digital technologies without compromising its safety, …

The Effect Of A Metalinguistic Approach To Sentence Combining On Written Expression In Eighth Grade Science For Students Who Struggle With Literacy, Lynne Telesca Jan 2015

The Effect Of A Metalinguistic Approach To Sentence Combining On Written Expression In Eighth Grade Science For Students Who Struggle With Literacy, Lynne Telesca

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent data indicate that less than 50% of American secondary students are able to demonstrate grade-level proficiency in reading, writing, and science (National Center for Educational Statistics [NCES], 2007, 2011, 2012a, 2012b). Secondary students* are expected to develop advanced literacy skills, especially in writing, in order to be ready for college and careers. Students are expected to develop these advanced literacy skills, within all academic subjects. In other words, they are expected to develop disciplinary literacy skills. The statistics are alarming overall, but they are particularly alarming in the area of science. Students need strong literacy skills, including written expression, …

Removing The Binaries Between Humanity And Nature: The Female Perception Through Science Fiction Utopias, Sarah Gail Farrell Jan 2015

Removing The Binaries Between Humanity And Nature: The Female Perception Through Science Fiction Utopias, Sarah Gail Farrell

English Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation examines utopian science fictions by women from the early modern era and the latter half of the 20th century. While the utopian genre shifts in time, the project focuses on comparing two time periods in order to discuss the topic of humanity’s place in nature. By examining these two distinct eras, I am able to argue that ecofeminist debates about ecological concerns often center around the human/nature binary. These ecofeminist views, I argue, rely on analyzing certain texts in order to glean the truth about the human/nature dichotomy and to offer solutions to these problems. Using Margaret Cavendish’s …

Metaphoric Generative Genograms: A Journey To Bring Genograms To Life Through Metaphorical Components, Elisa Garcia

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

The purpose of this dissertation is to offer a greater understanding of the potential of genograms through my clinical work from a Bowen Family Systems lens. I account for how I processed and effectively blended metaphorical components, by examining six cases from my two-year journal entries, of bringing genograms to life in sessions. I also explain how I created a useful tool, the Metaphoric Generative Genogram, that can benefit other clinicians working with children and families in the foster care community.

The Charge Of Being Deluded Interpreters Of Scripture: A Reassessment Of The Importance Of Chiasms In Mark 11–12, Benson Goh Jan 2015

The Charge Of Being Deluded Interpreters Of Scripture: A Reassessment Of The Importance Of Chiasms In Mark 11–12, Benson Goh

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies

Although much attention has been given to the structure and meaning of Mark 11–12, the chiastic structures in that passage have not been sufficiently observed nor appreciated for their contribution to the Markan message. The grave mistake and failure of the Sadducees in 12:18- 27, and of the religious establishment in the larger context of chs. 11–12, was that of being deluded in their interpretation of Scripture. This might not seem clear at first to modern readers , but once the chiasms, ergasia chreia elaboration, and contextual evidences are shown and explained, the purposeful use of these rhetorical structures in …

Factors That Affect Sustainability Of Transitional Homes For Sexually Exploited Women, Ruth E. Deguzman Dalman

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem this thesis project addressed was the factors that prevent the sustainability of transitional homes for sexually exploited women. The goal was to gain understanding as to why some transitional homes fail and what components are necessary for sustainability. Four case studies were carried out between two sustainable and two non-sustainable homes. Three workers from each home were interviewed. Interview queries related to how the home treated organization, management, assessment and training, and resources. Significant data was produced from probing mission alignment, leadership interaction, policy comprehension, merits of assessment, and significance of training. One of the significant findings was …

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

The rise of Islamic State has seen a rise in the threat and incidences of domestic terrorism. Sophisticated strategies are being used to target youth and draw them into the ideology of Islamic state and other terrorist groups. Two common strategies used by Islamic State are the use of propaganda tools as well as Neuro linguistic programming strategies. This paper looks at how these strategies were used through a longitudinal online ethnographic study on the social media site Facebook. Data collected revealed that these two strategies were used in a targeted manner and worked together in a symbiotic fashion to …

Cohesion And Perceived Proficiency In Ita Oral Communication Across Engineering And The Sciences, Jennifer Haan Jan 2015

Cohesion And Perceived Proficiency In Ita Oral Communication Across Engineering And The Sciences, Jennifer Haan

English Faculty Publications

International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) often require additional instruction because their speech is not easily understandable. This lack of perceived proficiency may be attributable to mistakes in sentence level grammar or pronunciation, but may also be affected by discourse level structures including overall organization and coherence of talk. This chapter examines spoken data from an ITA proficiency test to better understand the relationship between cohesion-the linguistic property used to build coherence-and perceived comprehensibility of ITAs.

The study analyzes the use of cohesive ties (such as pronouns and conjunctions), across different proficiency levels in order to characterize and describe how ITAs at …

An Examination Of The Factors That Influence The Strategic Priorities Of Ireland's Public And Private Higher Education Senior Managers, Ruth O'Donnell

PhDs

Globally, higher education is experiencing transformative changes, and higher education institutions now operate in highly competitive and dynamic environments. Funders of higher education, including governments, subsequently, require the strategic spending of funding, and expect higher education institutions to deliver a satisfactory return on investment. In this landscape, and in the context of Ireland’s challenging economic environment in recent years, this research seeks to understand precisely what factors influence the strategic priorities of Ireland’s higher education senior managers. Research on strategic planning in Irish HE is limited, particularly in the context of Ireland’s volatile economic environment, in recent years, and global …

The Effects Of Online Katakana Word Recognition Training Among Novice Learners Of Japanese As A Foreign Language, Yumiko Tashiro Jan 2015

The Effects Of Online Katakana Word Recognition Training Among Novice Learners Of Japanese As A Foreign Language, Yumiko Tashiro

Open Access Dissertations

Because word recognition processes differ depending on orthographic systems, second language learners with different orthographic backgrounds need to acquire new word recognition strategies suitable to the orthography in their second language. Japanese is a multi-script language and one of the scripts, katakana, is mainly used to transcribe Western loanwords. Due to the sound alternations resulting from the process of borrowing, learners of Japanese often experience difficulties in reading and writing katakana loanwords. Thus, this study investigates the effectiveness of online katakana word recognition training among novice learners of Japanese. Thirty-one students from a first-semester Japanese course at a large research …

Smartphones, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2015

Smartphones, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Many of the research approaches to smartphones actually regard them as more or less transparent points of access to other kinds of communication experiences. That is, rather than considering the smartphone as something in itself, the researchers look at how individuals use the smartphone for their communicative purposes, whether these be talking, surfing the web, using on-line data access for off-site data sources, downloading or uploading materials, or any kind of interaction with social media. They focus not so much on the smartphone itself but on the activities that people engage in with their smartphones.

Ingroup Bias And Ingroup Projection In The Furry Fandom, Stephen Reysen, Courtney N. Plante, Sharon E. Roberts, Kathleen C. Gerbasi Jan 2015

Ingroup Bias And Ingroup Projection In The Furry Fandom, Stephen Reysen, Courtney N. Plante, Sharon E. Roberts, Kathleen C. Gerbasi

Faculty Publications

In two studies, we examine ingroup favoritism within the furry community. Furry fans construct personas (“fursonas”) that are often related to a species of animal (e.g., fox, wolf). In Study 1, furries were found to rate their fursona species more favorably than other species. In Study 2, we examined whether the ingroup projection model may aid in understanding this ingroup species bias. Participants’ ratings of prototypicality of their species within the fandom was associated with greater favoritism of one’s species. A serial mediation model showed that identification with the fursona and perceived benefits of one’s fursona mediated the association between …

"Race Is Not A Determinative Factor": Mixed Race Children And Custody Cases In Canada, Susan B. Boyd, Krisha Dhaliwal Jan 2015

"Race Is Not A Determinative Factor": Mixed Race Children And Custody Cases In Canada, Susan B. Boyd, Krisha Dhaliwal

Canadian Journal of Family Law

Statistics suggest that an increase will occur in the number of custody disputes involving mixed race children in Canada. This article considers the extent to which the fact that a child is mixed race factors into child custody determinations, and how courts consider it. It also discusses whether considering a child's mixed race heritage is helpful in the child-custody context. The article first explains the use of "race" and "culture" in the Canadian context, then reviews the literature on mixed race children and the law, before examining legislation on the "best interests of the child." The focus of the paper …

Professional development in science education aims to support teacher learning with the ultimate goal of improving student achievement. A multitude of factors influence teacher change and the effectiveness of professional development. This review of the literature explores these factors and identifies school and district science leaders as a critical factor missing from current professional development models. School and district leaders play a significant role in the planning and implementation of professional development, as well as providing ongoing leadership to support teacher change. Considering this role, school district leaders are not just a contextual factor, but rather an integral part of …
