Translingual Identity And Art: Marc Chagall's Stride Through The Gate Of Janus, Natasha Lvovich Jan 2015

Translingual Identity And Art: Marc Chagall's Stride Through The Gate Of Janus, Natasha Lvovich

Publications and Research

This hybrid piece, combining scholarly inquiry in several disciplines (from bilingualism and literary theory to visual art, cultural anthropology, and psychoanalysis) with the genre of personal essay, explores the concept of multilingual identity and creativity in visual art. Establishing the parallel with the phenomenon of 'literary translingualism' and exemplifying most salient identity features of several translingual writers, I coin the concept of 'artistic translingualism.' The essay is focused on multilingual life and art of an immigrant artist, Marc Chagall, and analyzes his several paintings within the framework of three translingual constructs: duality, ambivalence, and liminality. The complexity of translingual identity, …

The Effectiveness Of Utilizing Various Memory Cues In The Preaching Event At Sandy Plains Baptist Church In Shelby, North Carolina, Garin Hill Jan 2015

The Effectiveness Of Utilizing Various Memory Cues In The Preaching Event At Sandy Plains Baptist Church In Shelby, North Carolina, Garin Hill

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Every Sunday pastors across the spectrum attempt to preach in memorable ways. So if traditional wisdom is actually true – most churchgoers forget the sermon immediately upon leaving church – then does that qualify as memorable? While realizing no sermon lingers forever, this project explores ways to give the sermon a longer shelf life in the parishioner’s memory. Specifically, by utilizing picture, story, and object lesson in various sermons, this experiment conducted at Sandy Plains Baptist Church in Shelby, North Carolina, examines which memory cues (if any) are most effective in keeping the sermon fixed in the long-term memory of …

John Milton, Joseph Smith, And The Book Of Mormon, Robert A. Rees Jan 2015

John Milton, Joseph Smith, And The Book Of Mormon, Robert A. Rees

BYU Studies

In my Introduction to Mormonism class at Graduate Theological Union in 2013, among other topics we discussed the Book of Mormon and its possible provenances. The assignments for the class included my article “Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, and the American Renaissance,” in which I compare Joseph Smith with his illustrious contemporaries Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Walt Whitman in terms of their respective literary imagination, talent, authorial maturity, education, cultural milieu, knowledge base, and intellectual sophistication. In that article, I attempted to demonstrate that each of these authors enjoyed a much greater …

Richard Sherman, Rhetoric, And Racial Animus In The Rebirth Of The Bogeyman Myth, Nick J. Sciullo Jan 2015

Richard Sherman, Rhetoric, And Racial Animus In The Rebirth Of The Bogeyman Myth, Nick J. Sciullo

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

After the Seattle Seahawks won the NFC Championship game, the postgame interview of Richard Sherman, a defensive back for the Seahawks, became subject to racialized discourse in the media. This article draws upon important concepts of black danger, blackness and the media, and racial animus to explain how media pundits and online commentaries about the interview have created a modem-day version of the bogeyman. In so doing, the article theorizes a new logic to racial animus-the myth of the bogeyman-to expound on the confluence of race, law, and sports. This new approach will help to explain covert racism in the …

Challenges For Bilingual Legal Education: Evidence From A Malaysian Law Faculty, R. Powell, L.H. Chew Jan 2015

Challenges For Bilingual Legal Education: Evidence From A Malaysian Law Faculty, R. Powell, L.H. Chew

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Several common law jurisdictions (e.g. Bangladesh, Hong Kong) and some civil law systems (Macao, Timor Leste) function in two or more languages as a result of retaining laws and legal networks that evolved in a colonial medium while attempting to enhance legal transparency or conform to national language policies by recognizing local languages of wider communication. Unlike systems that mediate language difference through interpreting and translation, bilingual systems place a particular linguistic onus on lawyers, many of whom have to switch languages when switching communication sites (superior court, subordinate court, office etc.), communicative tasks (drafting litigation, commercial documents or submissions), …

The Story Which He Never Stops Telling Himself: Autobiography, Narrative Community, And The Deconstruction Of Selfhood In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Melodie Roschman Jan 2015

The Story Which He Never Stops Telling Himself: Autobiography, Narrative Community, And The Deconstruction Of Selfhood In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Melodie Roschman

Honors Theses

This paper examines narrative, biography, and selfhood in Virginia Woolf's The Waves (1931). The novel, a "play-poem," follows six friends' monologues from childhood to death. I analyze aspiring writer Bernard from his childhood of telling stories about companions to his inability to narrate his autobiography, arguing that he fails because he has no self to narrate. Referencing Jacques Derrida's Of Grammatology's (1974) theory of the deconstructed self identifiable only in conversation, I argue that Bernard destroys his identity by silencing his friends and becoming the sole speaker; Woolf's biographical theory thereby establishes the communal self, prefiguring tenets of postmodern philosophy.

Discourse And Narrative: Creating Gender Control In Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Charles Lee Jan 2015

Discourse And Narrative: Creating Gender Control In Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Charles Lee

Honors Theses

Junot Diaz's Pulitzer-Prize-Winning 2007 novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao explores Dominican masculinity through narrator Yunior de Las Casas's portrayal of protagonist Oscar de Leon's family history. Yunior's perceived virility shapes his understanding of masculinity, which he stresses through the novel's plot and structure. This analysis considers how Yunior constructs Dominican masculinity through his narrative by marginalizing and emasculating passive character such as Oscar. I argue that Yunior's narrative closely links definition of masculinity and power as he strives to dominate passive characters in order to assert his virility as the "best" method for being a Dominican man.

Edward Snowden, Criminal Or Patriot: Media Coverage Of National Security Agency Document Leaks, Joyce M. Yoon Jan 2015

Edward Snowden, Criminal Or Patriot: Media Coverage Of National Security Agency Document Leaks, Joyce M. Yoon

Honors Theses

Kenneth Burke's dramatic pentad was used to analyze Edward Snowden's National Security Agency (NSA) document leaks from June 5, 2013 through October 1, 2013 as published in the New York Times (NYT) and the Guardian. The articles were coded by newspaper, headline, reporting journalist, page prominence, word count, publication date, and tone of stories. Content analysis revealed that there was significant difference in coverage of Snowden: the Guardian utilized the word "swhistleblower"s extensively in a positive way while negative words like "leaker" drove NYT coverage of Snowden. Both papers overlap in the identification of Snowden's actions as one of the …

Adventist Eschatological Identity And The Interpretations Of The Time Periods Of Daniel 12:11-12, Abner F. Hernandez Jan 2015

Adventist Eschatological Identity And The Interpretations Of The Time Periods Of Daniel 12:11-12, Abner F. Hernandez

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

In recent years some Seventh-day Adventist scholars began applying the time periods in Dan 12:5-13 to the future. Rejecting the traditional historicist Adventist understanding that places the three and a half times, the 1290 and 1335 days, as prophetic periods already fulfilled in the past, they claim that these time periods should be understood as literal days still to come. Likewise, some Adventist scholars interpret the time periods of Dan 12 as merely a literary device that seems to suggest an apparent “delay” of the time of the end. There are others who think it is not possible to state …

This pilot investigated the promise of positive outcomes in literacy, science, and social behavior on K– 2 English learner (﴾EL)﴿ students after two months of implementation of the Science Inquiry Centered Argumentation Model (﴾ScICAM)﴿—a systematic teaching approach to science learning that integrates literacy instruction and argument-‐based inquiry. The sample included 17 teachers and 31 EL students. Results indicated that teacher practices (﴾proximal outcomes)﴿ aligned well with the ScICAM approach and resulted in increases in EL student learning (﴾distal outcomes)﴿. Teacher increase in the use of inquiry and writing scaffolds and student growth in the ability to express understandings through oral …

Formation And Assessment Of A Tool To Evaluate Stem Literacy In Service-Learning Projects, Barbara Hayford, Sally Blomstrom, Lori A. Mumpower Jan 2015

Formation And Assessment Of A Tool To Evaluate Stem Literacy In Service-Learning Projects, Barbara Hayford, Sally Blomstrom, Lori A. Mumpower

Publications

The purpose of the authors’ research was to create a tool to evaluate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) literacy in service-learning projects. The researchers posited that components of service-learning, which in this case included the deliverable and reflections, are examples of fundamental STEM literacy and thus can be assessed for STEM learning outcomes. The authors review the literature on service-learning and on STEM literacy. Combining components of literacy-based learning objectives and service-learning objectives with the revised Bloom’s taxonomy in a taxonomy table, they created a general STEM literacy evaluation tool. They then applied the tool to a service-learning project …

A Heuristic Text Analytic Approach For Classifying Research Articles, Steven Walczak, Deborah L. Kellogg Jan 2015

A Heuristic Text Analytic Approach For Classifying Research Articles, Steven Walczak, Deborah L. Kellogg

School of Information Faculty Publications

Classification of research articles is fundamental to analyze and understand research literature. Underlying concepts from both text analytics and concept mining form a foundation for the development of a quantitative heuristic methodology, the Scale of Theoretical and Applied Research (STAR), for classifying research. STAR demonstrates how concept mining may be used to classify research with respect to its theoretical and applied emphases. This research reports on evaluating the STAR heuristic classifier using the Business Analytics domain, by classifying 774 Business Analytics articles from 23 journals. The results indicate that STAR effectively evaluates overall article content of journals to be consistent …

A Novel Algorithm For Analyzing Drug-Drug Interactions From Medline Literature, Yin Lu, Dan Shen, Maxwell Pietsch, Chetan Nagar, Zayd Fadli, Hong Huang, Yi-Cheng Tu, Feng Chen

School of Information Faculty Publications

Drug-drug interaction (DDI) is becoming a serious clinical safety issue as the use of multiple medications becomes more common. Searching the MEDLINE database for journal articles related to DDI produces over 330,000 results. It is impossible to read and summarize these references manually. As the volume of biomedical reference in the MEDLINE database continues to expand at a rapid pace, automatic identification of DDIs from literature is becoming increasingly important. In this article, we present a random-sampling-based statistical algorithm to identify possible DDIs and the underlying mechanism from the substances field of MEDLINE records. The substances terms are essentially carriers …

Tapping Into The Social Capital Of African American Alumni Of Urban High Schools, Adrian Derrick Johnson Jan 2015

Tapping Into The Social Capital Of African American Alumni Of Urban High Schools, Adrian Derrick Johnson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify and understand how African American alumni of urban high schools perceived that they could best contribute to their former schools. Despite numerous improvement efforts for several decades, the academic performance of urban high school students has failed to keep pace with that of their suburban counterparts. This research was framed around the premise that the rich legacies and diverse cultural experiences of African American alumni of urban high schools could mitigate the outside factors that negatively impact student performance at urban schools. These funds of knowledge, as Moll and Amanti (2005) described …

Amitav Ghosh’S The Circle Of Reason: A Clash Between Superstition And Scientific Reason, Gyanabati Khuraijam, Yumnam Oken Singh

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In the modern world today, when some people apply logic and reasoning on certain things, other people are still dominated by the age-old practice of superstitious beliefs and it sometimes becomes difficult to accept the principles and works carried out by them. These contradictions often lead to clashes between them. Amitav Ghosh’s Balaramin the Circle of Reason becomes obsessed with scientific reasoning after readingLife of Louis Pasteur and Practical Phrenology. The development of science and technology is taking place at such a fast pace but he starts carrying out all types of irrational activities like campaign for cleanliness of underwear …

Pragmatism Rules, Elizabeth G. Porter Jan 2015

Pragmatism Rules, Elizabeth G. Porter

Articles

The Roberts Court’s decisions interpreting the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure are reshaping the litigation landscape. Yet neither scholars, nor the Court itself, have articulated a coherent theory of interpretation for the Rules. This Article constructs a theory of Rules interpretation by discerning and critically examining the two starkly different methodologies the Roberts Court applies in its Rules cases. It traces the roots of both methodologies, explaining how they arise from — and reinforce — structural, linguistic, and epistemological tensions inherent in the Rules and the rulemaking process. Then, drawing from administrative law, it suggests a theoretical framework that accommodates …

Reforming Copyright Interpretation, Zahr K. Said Jan 2015

Reforming Copyright Interpretation, Zahr K. Said

Articles

This Article describes two dimensions of largely unacknowledged and unconstrained realms of interpretive complexity that judges face. First, judges make decisions about sources of interpretive authority somewhere on an axis, one end of which would vest interpretive authority entirely in the text and the other entirely in the context, around or beyond the text. This Article terms this spectrum of judicial decision-making the Text/Context axis. Second, judges must decide what interpretive mode to use in approaching the text, and here they make decisions somewhere along an axis where one end represents analysis or exegesis of the works and the other …

Creators, Innovators, And Appropriation Mechanisms, Sean M. O'Connor Jan 2015

Creators, Innovators, And Appropriation Mechanisms, Sean M. O'Connor

Articles

Now that Congress’s House Judiciary Committee has undertaken a review of current copyright law, and the Register of Copyrights, Maria Pallante, has called for the “Next Great Copyright Act,” sides are being drawn by various interest groups. Perhaps following the pitting of information technology firms against bio-chem and pharma firms in the patent reform battles leading to the America Invents Act, some interest groups want to divide the copyright reform debates into “innovators” and “creators.” Much of this seems driven by large tech firms such as Google, along with advocacy groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (“EFF”) who are …

The Overlooked French Influence On The Intellectual Property Clause, Sean M. O'Connor Jan 2015

The Overlooked French Influence On The Intellectual Property Clause, Sean M. O'Connor

Articles

The Intellectual Property Clause (“IP Clause”) of the US Constitution has long been a puzzle for courts and commentators. It authorizes Congress to secure exclusive property rights for authors and inventors, but it does not use the terms “patent” or “copyright,” and its objects of “Science” and “useful Arts” do not cleanly map onto the subject matter of current patent and copyright systems.

As the Supreme Court has noted, under popular usage of the terms “arts” and “science,” one would expect patents to promote science and copyrights to promote arts, yet we know from the historical record that exactly the …

New Slaves: Kanye West, Brad Paisley, And Contemporary Confederate-Flag Discourse In Popular Music Iconography, Kenneth Hartvigsen Jan 2015

New Slaves: Kanye West, Brad Paisley, And Contemporary Confederate-Flag Discourse In Popular Music Iconography, Kenneth Hartvigsen

Faculty Publications

One hundred and fifty years after Appomattox, the iconographic remains of America’s Civil War are still contested symbolic artifacts. Case in point: at the writing of this paper a state bill sat on California Governor Jerry Brown’s desk which would ban the sale of the Confederate flag or any merchandise with Confederate flag imagery on state property. Thus California has become the most recent battleground of the war between the states, or to word it in more precise language, California legislators have entered the debate over who controls a flag’s meaning and memory.
